    When NASA began 60 years ago, we had questions about the universe humans had been asking since we first looked up into the night sky. In the six decades since, NASA, along with its international partners and thousands of researchers, have expanded our knowledge of the Universe by using a full fleet of telescopes and satellites. From the early probes of the 1950s and 1960s to the great telescopes of the 1990s and 21st century, NASA scientists have been exploring the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present.

    The Great Observatories
    NASA astronomers use several kinds of telescopes in space and on the ground. Each observes targets like stars, planets, and galaxies, but captures different wavelengths of light using various techniques to add to our understanding of these cosmic phenomenon.
    Dark Matter
    NASA telescopes have helped us better understand this mysterious, invisible matter that is five times the mass of regular matter. The first direct detection of dark matter was made in 2007 through observations of the Bullet Cluster of galaxies by the Chandra x-ray telescope.

    Black Holes
    Although we can’t “see” black holes, scientists have been able to study them by observing how they interact with the environment around them with telescopes like Swift, Chandra, and Hubble. In 2017, NASA's Swift telescope has mapped the death spiral of a star as it is consumed by a black hole. This year, astronomers using Chandra have discovered evidence for thousands of black holes located near the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
    Galaxies
    A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, held together by gravity. Some are spiral-shaped like our Milky Way Galaxy; others are smooth and oval shaped. NASA telescopes are helping us learn about how galaxies formed and evolved over time.
    Exoplanets
    Just 30 years ago, scientists didn’t know if there were planets orbiting other stars besides our own Sun. Now, scientists believe every star likely has at least one exoplanet. They come in a wide variety of sizes, from gas giants larger than Jupiter to small, rocky planets about as big as Earth or Mars. They can be hot enough to boil metal or locked in deep freeze. They can orbit their stars so tightly that a “year” lasts only a few days; they can even orbit two stars at once. Some exoplanets don’t orbit around a star, but wander through the galaxy in permanent darkness. NASA’s Kepler spacecraft and newly-launched Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite are helping us find more distant worlds

    The planets around our star, the sun, are not the only ones out there. For years, people have wondered what exists beyond the one star, eight planets, and 710,000 minor planets (including dwarf planets, asteroids, etc.) in our Solar System. In 600 BC, exoplanets were discussed as we would discuss the idea of alternative universes today – once Aristotle landed on the idea of Earth being unique, that was that and all speculation was shut down. It wasn’t until the Renaissance that the idea was revisited by Giordano Bruno. He claimed that there are ‘countless suns and countless Earths rotating around their suns in exactly the same way’, and that we only see their suns rather than the planets themselves. His teachings led him to be executed for blasphemy and heresy, and his idea was rejected.

    In the 20th century, ideas moved more rapidly. Isaac Newton also hypothesised that exoplanets exist, but had no means of testing his hypothesis. In 1952, Otto Struve claimed that we only know of our star and our Solar System but that there is more beyond. In 1992, Wolszczan and Frail found other stars at the end of their lives (pulsars), and three years later Mayor and Queloz observed a Jupiter-sized planet (now termed a “hot Jupiter”) that orbit around their stars. The idea that exoplanets exist had sunk in.

    Number 10: Kepler-10b
    We're kicking off our countdown with Kepler-10b. Kepler-10B is the first confirmed terrestrial planet to be discovered outside the Solar System by the Kepler Space Telescope.

    Number 9: Trappist 1-B
    In the ninth spot of our list, we have TRAPPIST 1-b, a planet that has beaten most of our planets in the moon department.

    Number 8: J1407B
    Also known as Super-Saturn, this planet is extremely intriguing due to how it looks.

    Number 7: CoRot-7 b
    In the seventh spot of our list, we have CoRot-7 B, a planet with such a short orbital period that it revolves around its host star in around 20 hours.

    Number 6: GJ 436 b
    This planet is a physical contradiction. Its temperature is about 822 degrees F, certainly hot enough to evaporate water.

    Number 5: Wasp 12B
    In the fifth spot of our list, we have Wasp 12B, a planet that's notorious for being elongated in a really strange shape due to the gravity of its parent star and its effect on it.

    Number 4: HD 106906 b
    It was originally suggested that the planet known as HD 106906 b shouldn’t exist due to it’s size and distance from its star.

    Number 3: 55 Cancri E
    In the third spot of our list, we have 55 Cancri E, a planet almost everyone on Earth would love if they could just traverse 40 light years to it.

    Number 2: Kepler 70 b
    We’ve seen blistering hot planets in this list, but none are as absolutely scorching as Kepler 70b, the hottest planet in the Universe.

    Number 1: Kepler-16b
    This is one of the few known circumbinary planets, which means that it circles around two stars, similar to Luke Skywalker's home planet in Star Wars.

    I cannot imagine any single discovery that would have more impact on humanity than the discovery of life outside of our solar system. There is a human-centric, Earth-centric view of life that permeates most cultural and societal thinking. Finding that there are multiple, perhaps millions of origins of life and that life is ubiquitous throughout the universe will profoundly affect every human.

    We live on a microbial planet. There are one million microbial cells per cubic centimeter of water in our oceans, lakes, and rivers; deep within the Earth's crust and throughout our atmosphere. We have more than 100 trillion microbes on and in each of us. The Earth's diversity of life would have seemed like science fiction to our ancestors. We have microbes that can withstand millions of Rads of ionizing radiation; such strong acid or base that it would dissolve our skin; microbes that grow in ice and microbes that grow and thrive at temperatures exceeding 100 degrees C. We have a life that lives on carbon dioxide, on methane, on sulfur, or on sugar. We have sent trillions of bacteria into space over the last few billion years and we have exchanged material with Mars on a constant basis, so it would be very surprised if we do not find evidence of microbial life in our solar system, particularly on Mars.

    The recent discoveries by Dimitar Sasselov and colleagues of numerous Earth and super-Earth-like planets outside our solar system, including water worlds, greatly increases the probability of finding life. Sasselov estimates approximately 100,000 Earth and super-Earths within our own galaxy. The universe is young so wherever we find microbial life there will be intelligent life in the future.

    Expanding our scientific reach further into the skies will change us forever.

  • Stephen Hawking’s 7 Predictions of Earth’s Demise in the Next 200 Years

    What will happen to our planet in the next 200 years? The most famous scientist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, who has made profound and inspiring discoveries, predicted an extremely dark and pessimistic future to the Earth and its inhabitants. Here are some of Hawking’s most terrifying predictions on how and when our world will meet its demise.
    Since scientists started toying with genetically engineered viruses to treat human illnesses, they’ve also discovered other possible uses for them. Nowadays, pharmacists are even combining several deadly viruses into a single shot and doing some weird stuff with DNA mixing.
    Hawking was a firm believer in extraterrestrial life, and he was convinced that they will eventually invade our planet. And no, unfortunately, they probably won’t come in peace. In his final work, A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation, completed just two weeks before he died, Hawking predicted that our universe will eventually fade into darkness as all the stars run out of energy.
    Although Hawking's life basically depended on artificial intelligence, he didn't trust it at all. He once said that it might just be “the worst invention in the history of our civilization” because it’ll probably replace humans altogether.
    Hawking added that global warming will make the conditions on Earth similar to those on Venus. To save ourselves from problems like overpopulation (and the scarcity of resources that comes with it), pandemics, and pollution, we have to discover new worlds and become a multi-planetary species.

    -Hawking predicted that our universe will eventually fade into darkness as all the stars run out of energy.
    -The scientist believed that artificial intelligence could eventually outsmart and outperform humans or, worse, decide to get rid of us.
    -The development of militarized technology and weapons of mass destruction could lead us to disastrous consequences, which would mean the end of our world.
    -According to Hawking, we have to find another planet to live on within the next 100 years. Otherwise, we’ll die out as a species because Earth has already reached “the point of no return”.
    -Global warming will make the conditions on Earth similar to those on Venus. The average temperature will be about 480°F. Our planet will burst into flames in less than 600 years.

  • Most Earth-Like Worlds Not Born Yet

    According to a new theoretical study, when our solar system was born 4.6 billion years ago only eight percent of the potentially habitable planets that will ever form in the universe existed. And, the party won't be over when the sun burns out in another 6 billion years. The bulk of those planets — 92 percent — have yet to be born.

    This conclusion is based on an assessment of data collected by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and the prolific planet-hunting Kepler space observatory.

    Are there exoplanets like Earth? We live in one of a hundred billion of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars. And now, thanks to modern astronomy, we know that the Milky Way is home to perhaps a hundred billion planets! In the past two decades, these exoplanet discoveries have spawned new questions about our universe, and if there might be another Earth, or other life, somewhere out there.

    In part 1 of our two-part series on exoplanets, we'll look at how astronomers find exoplanets, and what it means to call them Earth-like. We'll trace the history of planetary science back three thousand years and examine Earth's changing status in the cosmos. We were once the center of the universe, and now Earth is just another rock in the sky. What does that mean for us?

    The Current Achievement winner, the team responsible for the Kepler spacecraft, has revolutionized humanity’s view of Earth’s place in the universe by discovering that planets are common throughout the Milky Way galaxy. As a result of Kepler’s discoveries, scientists are confident that Earth’s galaxy hosts tens of billions of Earth-sized planets that could reside in the temperate “habitable zone” of their parent star. Since its launch in 2009, Kepler has continued to make important scientific discoveries that will forever change humanity’s perception of its place in the cosmos. It also is establishing a foundation for future studies of exoplanet atmospheres that could eventually answer the question of whether or not humans are alone in the universe.

  • Finding Another Earth Within Reach

    From EsoCast. Planet hunters unveil the tricks of the trade for finding planets around nearby stars and scanning them for signs of life.

    Are we alone? It's the biggest question ever. And the answer is almost within reach. With so many galaxies, and each with so many stars, how could the Earth be unique?

    In 1995, Swiss astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz were the first to discover an exoplanet orbiting a normal star. Since then, planet hunters have found many hundreds of alien worlds. Large and small, hot and cold, and in a wide variety of orbits. Now, we're on the brink of discovering Earth's twin sisters. And in the future: a planet with life -- the Holy Grail of astrobiologists.

    Michel Mayor's team found hundreds of them from Cerro La Silla, ESO's first Chilean foothold. Here's the CORALIE spectrograph, mounted on the Swiss Leonhard Euler Telescope. It measures the tiny wobbles of stars, caused by the gravity of orbiting planets.

    ESO's venerable 3.6-metre telescope is also hunting for exoplanets. The HARPS spectrograph is the most accurate in the world. So far, it has discovered more than 150 planets. Its biggest trophy: a rich system containing at least five and maybe as many as seven alien worlds. But there are other ways to find exoplanets. In 2006, the 1.5-metre Danish telescope helped to discover a distant planet that is just five times more massive than the Earth.

    The trick? Gravitational microlensing.?The planet and its parent star passed in front of a brighter star in the background, magnifying its image. And in some cases, you can even capture exoplanets on camera.

    In 2004 NACO, the adaptive optics camera on the Very Large Telescope took the first image ever of an exoplanet. The red dot in this image is a giant planet orbiting a brown dwarf star. In 2010, NACO went one step further. This star is 130 light-years away from Earth.? It is younger and brighter than the Sun, and four planets circle around it in wide orbits.

    NACO's eagle-eyed vision made it possible to measure the light of planet c — a gas giant ten times more massive than Jupiter. Despite the glare of the parent star, the feeble light of the planet could be stretched out into a spectrum, revealing details about the atmosphere.

    Today, many exoplanets are discovered when they transit across their parent stars. If we happen to see the planet's orbit edge-on, it will pass in front of its star every cycle. Thus, tiny, regular brightness dips in the light of a star betray the existence of an orbiting planet. The TRAPPIST telescope at La Silla will help search for these elusive transits.

    Meanwhile, the Very Large Telescope has studied a transiting planet in exquisite detail. Meet GJ1214b, a super-Earth 2.6 times larger than our home planet.

    During transits, the planet's atmosphere partly absorbs the light of the parent star. ESO's sensitive FORS spectrograph revealed that GJ1214b might well be a hot and steamy sauna world.

    Gas giants and sauna worlds are inhospitable to life. But the hunt is not over yet. Soon, the new SPHERE instrument will be installed at the VLT. SPHERE will be able to spot faint planets in the glare of their host stars. In 2016, the ESPRESSO spectrograph will arrive at the VLT and greatly surpass the current HARPS instrument.

    And ESO's Extremely Large Telescope, once completed, may well find evidence for alien biospheres. On Earth, life is abundant. Northern Chile offers its share of condors, vicuñas, vizcachas and giant cacti. Even the arid soil of the Atacama desert teems with hardy microbes.

    We've found the building blocks of life in interstellar space. We've learnt that planets are abundant. Billions of years ago, comets brought water and organic molecules to Earth. Wouldn't we expect the same thing to happen elsewhere?

    Astronomers from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand have discovered a new super-Earth orbiting a star located near the Milky Way's galactic bulge, a dense region of stars in the center of our galaxy, according to a press release published by the university on May 11.


    This rare super-Earth is 25,000 light-years away. It is one of only a handful among the 4,000 exoplanets to have been detected that is similar to Earth in both size and orbit.


    According to their research, which was published on May 7 in The Astronomical Journal, the world is four times the mass of Earth.


    It orbits a dim dwarf star that is only 10 percent the mass of our Sun. This star is so small that the researchers could not determine if it is a low-mass star or a kind of failed star called a brown dwarf.


    The newly discovered orbits at a distance between Venus and Earth from its parent star. But because its star's mass is so small, a year on this world lasts 617 days.


    To find the planet, the researchers used a method called gravitational microlensing.


    The combined gravity of the planet and its host star caused the light from a more distant background star to be magnified in a particular way. We used telescopes distributed around the world to measure the light-bending effect, University of Canterbury astronomer Antonio Herrera Martin, said in the news release.


    These experiments detect around 3,000 microlensing events each year, the majority of which are due to lensing by single stars, the paper's co-author Michael Albrow was quoted as saying in the news release.


    Dr Herrera Martin first noticed that there was an unusual shape to the light output from this event, and undertook months of computational analysis that resulted in the conclusion that this event was due to a star with a low-mass planet.

    Nearly every star in the night sky is a Sun, host to its own system of planets. Exoplanet hunters are keen on detecting Earth-like planets around other stars, but currently our best observations are limited to only the most basic geophysical parameters.

    Fortunately, we can say a lot about these alien worlds by first examining the nature and evolution of terrestrial planets found in our own solar system. As our Sun has evolved in time, so too have Venus, Earth, and Mars. All have evidence of liquid water early in their histories, but only Earth remains habitable today. In this LASP public lecture from April 6, 2016, atmospheric scientist Eric Wolf discusses the evolution of terrestrial planet atmospheres in relation to the host star, touching upon topics of the Faint Young Sun Paradox, snowball Earth episodes, moist and runaway greenhouses, and the search for a second Earth.
