  • Trumps defense team arguments in Trump impeachment trial

    8:29:29

Trump's legal team will begin laying out its case in depth, turning to several high-profile attorneys to argue against impeachment.

The lawyers revealed the broad outlines of their defense in a rare but truncated Saturday session, where they accused House Democrats of using the impeachment case to try to undo the results of the last presidential election and drive Trump from office.

The legal team is expected to pick up on that theme and also dive into areas that received negligible attention during the Democrats' presentation, including the now-concluded investigation into ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign.

  • The many faces of modern China with Jue Wang, Stephan Petermann & Valérie Hoeks

    1:18:07

Over the past decades, China’s economy has been characterised by rapid growth, which has lifted more than 850 million people out of poverty since 1978. At the same time, the country’s income inequality significantly increased. Together with academics and creative minds we discuss the driving forces behind economic growth in China and how its society transforms as a result of it, creating unprecedented prosperity for many, but not for all. What is the key to understanding China’s economy?

It is safe to say that the economic reforms and opening up of the Chinese market to international investors has brought unprecedented prosperity and completely transformed China’s society. Notwithstanding this impressive achievement, China’s economic development has resulted in diverging realities. While China overtook the U.S. last year to become the country with the most people among the world’s richest 10%, some regions and social groups have stayed behind, as inequality increased significantly over the last decades as well. And at a time when the Chinese government is investing heavily in the economy of the future, an ageing population, overheated property markets, and more recently, the Corona Virus, are only some of the economic challenges that need to be overcome. This evening we plunge into the Chinese economy and discuss rapid urbanisation, trends in rural areas and the fate of those who have stayed behind.

    Speakers
Jue Wang has a wide range of research interests in international economic organizations, international cooperation and the development of emerging economies with a special focus on China. Dr Wang is also an associate fellow in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House. She regularly comments on Chinese and international affairs for media outlets including the BBC, CGTN, Al Jazeera, the New York Times, and The Times.

In February 2020 Stephan Petermann presented Chinese Villages: A new Era as part of the Countryside, The Future exhibition by Rem Koolhaas/AMO at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Sinologist Valérie Hoeks gives advice to Dutch and Chinese companies. She will highlight how Chinese businesses are hit by the Coronavirus outbreak.

The many faces of modern China
The LeidenAsiaCentre and De Balie present “The many faces of modern China”, a programme series containing diverging views on China’s multifaceted development. Spread out over three sessions, experts, politicians and artists offer a much needed reality check of China’s economy, its political system and its rise on the international stage. How can we better understand the political, social and economic reality of this country with its 1.3 billion inhabitants? And what can we learn from China?

  • Watch: US President Joe Biden talks tough on Russia & China

    3:22

US President Joe Biden talked tough against China and Russia. He said that the US stands with its allies and will also engage its adversaries. Biden said that he conveyed to Russian President Putin that the international community was concerned about the arrest of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and called for his immediate release. Biden also had some tough words for China and said that he will confront the economic abuses & aggressive stance of China directly. ‘We will confront China's economic abuses; counter its aggressive, coercive action to push back on China's attack on human rights, intellectual property and global governance. But we are ready to work with Beijing when it is in America's interest to do so. We will compete from a position of strength by building back better at home, working with our allies and partners, renewing our role in international institutions, and reclaiming our credibility and moral authority, much of which has been lost’ Biden said. • A reincarnated battlefront with China shouldnt be blindly embraced : Ex-FS Nirupama Rao

    1:24:31

    #ICSConversation
Nirupama Rao, former foreign secretary and former ambassador to China & the US, talks about the manner in which China’s foreign policy has undergone a major shift over the past few years. In such a situation, she said, India needs to not only join other powers to come up with a countervailing coalition against China, but also conduct calibrated and well-studied diplomacy. Ambassador Rao pointed out that after Galwan, the commentary in Chinese-language media suggested that China does not see India as a friend or partner but more as a strategic adversary. India, she added, needs to formulate a pragmatic foreign policy with respect to China and make its strategic relations with the US more visible. Ambassador Rao was speaking at a webinar organised by the Institute of Chinese Studies called, ‘End of a Chapter?’, in association with ThePrint as media partner.

  • Farmers’ protest: Govt ‘ready to discuss proposal’ reiterates MSP, APMC points

    10:34

The government on Thursday asked farmer groups to consider its proposals for amending the Acts to address their concerns and said it is open to discussing its offer further whenever the unions want, but protesters remained defiant and threatened to block railway tracks too in addition to highways. A day after protesting farmers rejected the government's offer for a written assurance on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and amend few provisions in the new farm laws, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said at a press conference that union leaders must consider the proposals and said he is ready for further discussions with them, but left it to the farmer groups to propose a date for the next round of talks. The government is keen and ready for further discussions with protesting farmers...To clear their apprehensions, we have sent our proposal to farmer unions. I want to urge them to fix a date for discussion as early as possible. If they have any issue, the government is ready for discussion, the agriculture minister said. 1:19:42

The coronavirus pandemic has overturned life as we know it, and the global economy is bound to be one of the major victims. After the 2008-09 global financial crisis, the extraordinary measures put forward by China and the United States had contributed to lifting the global economy. Nowadays, the animosity between the two countries and President Donald Trump’s “protectionist tendencies” run the risk to jeopardize the success of any strategy implemented to dampen the effects of the post-coronavirus crisis. What can we expect from China-US relations after the coronavirus crisis? Which scenarios for the upcoming US presidential elections? Will coronavirus prove to be an “electoral game changer”?

Watch: Promise Vs Delivery | Budget Debate With Arnab Goswami

    -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Watch: Hawa Baazi Vs Haath Ki Safai | Full Debate ►

In a stinging attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday (September 8) said most of his poll promises were all hawabaazi (empty talk) and that his government has failed abysmally to match words with deeds and media events with actual accomplishments. The offensive unleashed by Sonia against Modi came even as the 68-year-old Congress leader's term as party presidentwas extended by another year through a resolution adopted by the Congress Working Committee(CWC), the party's highest policy making body, at its meeting in New Delhi. Sonia also said that from aggressively mocking his predecessor Manmohan Singh and his policy during the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign Modi has been reduced to unedifying flip-flops, casting doubts on what he really stood for. Giving credit to the campaign by Congress workers against land bill under active guidance of party Vice President Rahul Gandhi for the government climbdown, Sonia spoke of launching similar action against the assault on issues like labour reforms, women and child development, RTI and MGNREGA. In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami panelists -- Nalin Kohli, National Spokesperson, BJP and Advocate; Sunil Alagh, Chairman, SKA Advisors; Pavan Verma, MP, Rajya Sabha, JD (U) and Tom Vadakkan, National Spokesperson, Congress -- discuss whether -- hawa baazi versus haath ki safai - will both parties not go beyond jibes?

Announcing this in a press conference here, party senior leader and former mp Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra said SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had formed a three member committee including himself and mps Balwinder Singh Bhundur and Naresh Gujral to take up the issue at the appropriate levels. He said the party core committee had also resolved to ensure justice to the affected Sikh families of Uttar Pradesh.

Giving details of the cases, Prof Chandumajra party Uttar Pradesh Kisan wing President Jasbir Singh Virk had brought it to the notice of the party that Sikh families were being displaced at Bijnore, Lakhimpur Kheri, Rampur and Nanakmata and that coercive action was being taken to displace them. “The SAD expresses solidarity with the affected farmers most of whom have settled in Uttar Pradesh after being displaced during partition in 1947 and will do its utmost to ensure they are not uprooted from their lands again”.

He said the police administration has started displacement of farmers from Champatpur in Bijnour and Rananpur in Lakhimpur Khiri. He said in both cases the farmers had uprooted jungle and cultivated barren land to make it fertile but now when it was time for them to enjoy the fruits of their labour they were being ousted from their lands.

Prof Chandumajra also disclosed that Sikh farmers from 15 villages in district Rampur of Tarai belt had purchased land from one Bikkar Shah. They got their lands registered but failed to get mutation done due to which Bikkar Shah remained owner of the land in government records. He said that in year 1966 land ceiling act was implemented by the government which allotted this land to forest department which was strongly opposed by the farmers at that time. He said that later in 1980 during consolidation of land, names of these farmers was registered. Later the state government challenged this in High Court which sent this case for consideration to revenue department. The former mp said the Sikhs farmers had constructed houses on the land, installed tubewell connections and even availed benefit of government schemes but were now being told to vacate it to make way for an Armoury centre.

Talking about injustice meted out with Sikhs and displacement done with them, Prof. Chanumajra said that in 1964 three thousand acre land was acquired at Gurudwara Nanak Mata near Nepal border for construction of Nanak Sagar dam and Sikh families were displaced from there. He said that at that time these families were assured that land of the forest department will be allotted and registered in their names. He said that during 1988 floods these families shifted to higher altitudes to save their families and after the floods, the government didn’t permit them to re-shift to their lands. He said that these families are struggling to get justice since then. EOM

  • Manpower Reforms, Tour of Duty & the Indian Army | Major Navdeep Singh

    27:02

The Indian Ministry of Defense is making efforts towards reducing the wage expenditures and the pension bill to free money for capital and modernization. What are the key challenges that the armed forces are facing in balancing manpower reduction and operational effectiveness? Is the ‘Tour of Duty’ a practical solution to some of these issues with regard to training and service periods? Is inverse induction to incentivize officers to opt for the Short Service Commission (SSC) viable? Is the recommendation to decrease manpower by increasing the size of the territorial army practical? Is there a practical solution for curtailing the current pension expenses in the coming years?

Pushan Das, Head of Forums at ORF, in conversation with Major Navdeep Singh, High Court Lawyer, Author & Founding President of the Armed Forces Tribunal Bar Association, discusses the Indian army's decision to make concrete reforms in manpower, expenditures and the pension bill, and the challenges that ensue.

  • East Meets South: Strengthening South Korea-India Relations for the 21st century | 9/5/19

    1:56:09

Though hesitant to officially join the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy, South Korea is seeking to promote many of the same values through the Moon administration’s “New Southern Policy.” Key to this agenda towards South and Southeast Asia is strengthening South Korea’s relations with India. With a strategic partnership and a free trade agreement between the two countries, the foundations of the relationship are already strong. However, both capitals must rise to meet evolving regional security challenges and capitalize on new economic opportunities. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Act East” policy is complementary to Moon’s “New Southern Policy,” but both must work to synchronize the two agendas to upgrade bilateral economic ties and expand security cooperation.

Please join KEI for presentations by Drs. Ahn Choong-yong and Jagannath Panda on strengthening South Korea-India security and economic cooperation with a discussion to follow led by Ambassador (ret.) Kathleen Stephens.

According to a UN report, 1/3rd of the world's extremely poor population lives in India. Election slogans over the years,'Garibi Hatao' and 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas', have focused on poverty. When will we actually see action? For more on that I am joined by the Minister of State for Finance, Mr Jayant Sinha; Sachin Pilot, former Corporate Affairs Minister and currently the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee; Professor Yogendra Yadav an independent expert and analyst; and Infosys founder NR Narayan Murthy.
