  • Replay of Mission 9 Webcast

    50:42

New Shepard flew for the ninth time on July 18, 2018. During this mission, known as Mission 9 (M9), the escape motor was fired shortly after booster separation. The Crew Capsule was pushed hard by the escape test and we stressed the rocket to test that astronauts can get away from an anomaly at any time during flight. The mission was a success for both the booster and capsule. Most importantly, astronauts would have had an exhilarating ride and safe landing.

This isn’t the first time we’ve done this type of extreme testing on New Shepard. In October of 2012, we simulated a booster failure on the launch pad and had a successful escape. Then in October of 2016, we simulated a booster failure in-flight at Max Q, which is the most physically strenuous point in the flight for the rocket, and had a completely successful escape of the capsule.

This test on M9 allowed us to finally characterize escape motor performance in the near-vacuum of space and guarantee that we can safely return our astronauts in any phase of flight.

Also on M9, New Shepard carried science and research payloads from commercial companies, universities and space agencies. Learn more about the payloads on board here:

  • REPLAY: Blue Origin New Shepard NS-17 suborbital launch

This is a replay of the live stream.
Launch site: Corn Ranch (Blue Origin Suborbital Launch Facility) near Van Horn, TX
Destination: Suborbital (straight up, straight down)
New Shepard will fly a NASA lunar landing technology demonstration a second time on the exterior of the booster, 18 commercial payloads inside the crew capsule, 11 of which are NASA-supported, and an art installation on the exterior of the capsule. Delayed from Aug 25 to “verify a fix on a payload integration issue and taking an extra look before we fly.”

    - Mounted to the exterior of the booster will be a NASA lunar landing tech demo which first flew on a previous New Shepard flight.
    - Outside the unmanned crew capsule, painted on top of the parachute covers will be an art installation by Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo called Suborbital Tryptych, consisting of portraits of the artist, his mother, and his friend’s mother. It’s part of Uplift Aerospace’s “Uplift Art Program”, to inspire new ideas and generate dialog.
    - Inside the capsule will be 18 commercial payloads, including:
    - The Modal Propellant Gauging experiment from Carthage College, demonstrating a novel approach to measuring propellant levels in spacecraft propellant tanks in a microgravity environment.
    - The Orbital Syngas / Commodity Augmentation Reactor (a.k.a. OSCAR) from NASA Kennedy Space Center, which aims to reuse and repurpose common spaceflight waste products by using heat, and an oxygen supply stage to transform the trash into useful resources such as water and propellant. This will be the OSCAR’s 2nd flight on New Shepard.
    - Liquid Acquisition Device or LAD-3 from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, their 3rd flight on New Shepard in a series of demonstrations of how liquid/vapor interfaces behave and how bubbles move in microgravity.
    - The Biological Imaging in Support of Suborbital Science from the University of Florida, their 3rd experiment in which the FLEX fluorescence imaging system will enable increasingly precise and dynamic biological research on suborbital missions.

New Shepard will fly 12 commercial payloads to space and back on this mission, including the Deorbit, Descent, and Landing Sensor Demonstration with NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate under a Tipping Point partnership. This is the first payload to fly mounted on the exterior of a New Shepard booster rather than inside the capsule, opening the door to a wide range of future high-altitude sensing, sampling, and exposure payloads.

Also on board are tens of thousands of postcards from students around the world from Blue Origin’s nonprofit, Club for the Future, some of which will include a special NASA Artemis stamp.

NASA has partnered with Blue Origin and will put their new technology on the booster stage in order to test it in hopes that it will be suitable enough to be used a quarter of a million miles away on the Moon. This will be another short, suborbital flight out of Blue Origin’s private facility on Corn Ranch located in West Texas, United States of America.

Watch as a Blue Origin New Shepard rocket launches to suborbital space carrying NASA technology payloads. Liftoff is targeted at 11 a.m. EDT. The rocket booster will descend back to Earth and touch down in a test of sensor systems that could allow spacecraft to navigate and make precise, soft landings on the Moon and other worlds.

Another test flight of the New Shepard rocket, NS-13 will also host 12 payloads from various universities, private investors, and NASA.

The capsule only barely makes up above the Karman line and lands several kilometers downrange. This makes the flight suborbital as it never makes one full revolution around the Earth. As for the New Shepard booster, it lands on a landing pad with the Blue Origin feather 3.34 km (2.07 mi) downrange to the north.

With a unique NASA payload onboard, New Shepard will use the brand new instruments designed by NASA to help the booster hover and land just as it would on the Moon.

NASA has developed the Safe and Precise Landing – Integrated Capabilities Evolution of SPLICE system which will be positioned on the outside of the New Shepard Booster. Some of its key capabilities and features include the 4 main subsystems: the hazard detection radar, terrain relative navigation, navigation Doppler lidar, and descent and landing computer. The last three of these will be on the New Shepard booster and will function the same there as they will on the Moon.

New Shepard is named after the pioneering astronaut Alan Shepard. Alan Shepard was the first American to go into space on a suborbital flight. The unique part of this launch vehicle is its reusability. They entire system can be reused, from the capsule to the booster which can propulsively land itself back on land. The only other launch provider with this capability is SpaceX.

Another major goal of Blue Origin and their new Shepard rocket is space tourism. After conducting many more flights, some of the more wealthy adventurers or private citizens can have the chance to go no a flight and experience a few minutes of zero gravity.

Tune in Tuesday, July 20 at 4:30 a.m. PT to watch Jeff Bezos become one of the first astronauts launched into space by Blue Origin on its New Shepard rocket.

  • LIVE Hosting Blue Origin New Shepard NS-3 Launch

    2:52:58

Launch is scheduled for 10:15 CDT (15:15 UTC) on Sunday, April 29th.

This is the 8th launch of Blue Origin's suborbital space tourism booster and capsule called the New Shepard. This is first launch for Blue Origin in 2018 and they'll be launching and landing at their Van Horn site in West Texas. This is the second flight of this particular booster, NS-3, which is the third one they've manufactured.

The whole mission is pretty short. Around only 10 minutes, but the booster and capsule will kiss the edge of space, 100 kms or 62 miles, where they'll separate and then land independently. The capsule which will someday carry tourists to the edge of space on quick suborbital hops land by parachutes (and mild touch down retro thrusters) while the booster lands itself propulsively.

  • What Happened To Blue Origin

    10:54

Jeff Bezos started Blue Origin over 20 years ago in the hopes of accelerating space exploration; however, despite this long time period, their progress is not so clear. So, what is Blue Origin even working on? Well, Blue Origin is currently working on making their New Shepard rocket crew ready. They hope to eventually break into the space tourism market using the New Shepard rocket. Aside from this, they have been developing their New Glenn rocket which will allow Blue Origin to not only reach the International Space Station but also the Moon. Along with this, they have also been developing their Blue Moon lunar landing that is supposed to help them set up a lunar base. This video explains the various projects Blue Origin is currently working on, how much progress they have made thus far, and the future of Blue Origin.

  • Mission 9: Safe Escape In Any Phase Of Flight

    1:00

The wealthiest man on earth Jeff Bezos spent a few minutes in space on July 20 on Blue Origin's first human mission. It was a key moment for the industry seeking to make the final frontier accessible to elite tourists. A very happy group of people in this capsule, said Bezos after the spaceship touched down in the west Texas desert following a 10-minute hop to the Karman line and back. The four-member crew exchanged high-fives and hugged family members who came to meet them at the landing site.

Earlier, the New Shepard capsule reached at an altitude of 66.5 miles (107 kilometers). It allowed the passengers to experience weightlessness while admiring the curve of the Earth. It's dark up here, said barrier-breaking female aviator Wally Funk, who joined Bezos, his brother and 18-year-old Dutchman Oliver Daemen, who became the youngest ever astronaut.

Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson made the journey on July 11, narrowly beating the Amazon magnate in their battle of the billionaires. Watch the video to know more.

    2:20:31

Liftoff is currently targeted for 8:00 am CDT / 9:00 am EDT / 13:00 UTC / 15:00 CEST.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-16 flight is targeting liftoff on Tuesday, July 20, from Launch Site One in West Texas. The launch window opens at 8:00 AM CDT / 13:00 UTC. Building on the incremental and consecutive mission successes for the vehicle over the course of the program’s flight history, NS-15 is a verification step for the vehicle and operations prior to flying astronauts.

Fulfilling a lifelong mission to become an astronaut, Wally Funk will fly to space on New Shepard’s first human flight on July 20 as an honoured guest. She will join Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark Bezos, and now after resigning the flight opportunity by the auction winner who spent $28m, 18-year-old Oliver Daemen. His father also attended the bidding and the bid was now chosen. Oliver Daemen and Wally Funk represent the youngest (18 years old) and oldest (82 years old) astronauts to travel to space.

Wally’s journey to space began in the 1960s when she was the youngest graduate of the Woman in Space Program, a privately-funded project which tested female pilots for astronaut fitness. Later known as the “Mercury 13” – thirteen American women successfully underwent the same physiological and psychological screening tests as the astronauts selected by NASA for Project Mercury, but they never flew to space. Wally was the youngest graduate of this program.

She was the first female FAA inspector and first female NTSB air safety investigator. The 82-year-old pilot will now be part of the first crew on New Shepard, and the oldest person ever to fly to space.

  • BLUE ORIGIN: Inside Look at Jeff Bezos Space Company

    9:18

What is Blue Origin? Let's take an inside look at Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, what its mission is, what drives it to excel, and what its plans are for space exploration.

Originally founded in 2000, Jeff Bezos has slowly created a space exploration and transportation company to rival SpaceX. While Blue Origin doesn't have as much fanfare as Elon Musk's SpaceX, Blue Origin is quietly building spaceships to take both cargo and people to space. Blue Origin, which is funded entirely by Bezos, will soon get much more of Bezos' attention once he steps down as CEO of Amazon. Do you think Blue Origin is a real space competitor to SpaceX?

NS-15 Mission to Conduct Astronaut Rehearsal for Future Customer Flights
Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-15 flight is targeting liftoff on Wednesday, April 14, from Launch Site One in West Texas. The launch window opens at 8:00 AM CDT / 13:00 UTC. Building on the incremental and consecutive mission successes for the vehicle over the course of the program’s flight history, NS-15 is a verification step for the vehicle and operations prior to flying astronauts.

During the mission, astronaut operational exercises will be conducted in preparation for human space flight. The primary operations will entail Blue Origin personnel standing in as astronauts entering into the capsule prior to launch. These astronauts will climb the launch tower, get into their seats, buckle their harnesses, and conduct a communications check from their seat with CAPCOM, the Capsule Communicator. The tower operations team will prepare the capsule cabin for launch and then briefly close the capsule hatch. The astronauts will then exit the capsule prior to launch.
