  • Rick Steves No-Travel Tips

    1:16

Europe has re-opened to travelers...except Americans. It seems that the USA's quarantine skills just aren't up to snuff. And, judging from the new coronavirus cases sweeping our country, we have a lot of room for improvement. If you want to flatten our curve so we can head back to Europe, the recipe is simple: Self-isolate at home as much as possible. If you're out in public, socially distance. And be sure to wear a mask.

In the meantime, it seems that we may be stuck at home for a while longer. If you're like me, more than 100 days of staying close to home is wearing thin (even though it's just as important as ever). Sometime during the haze of quarantine, I started brainstorming ways that travelers can bring a little bit of Europe into our daily lives during this crisis. This video offers a few suggestions.

  • Rick Steves European Christmas Extra: Presepi Manger Scenes - Romes Bethlehem Home Show

    1:07

More info about travel to Rome: These presepi, as manger scenes are called, originated just a little north of Rome in Assisi by Saint Francis. That was 800 years ago. He was a master at teaching Bible lessons with clever props, and a manger scene helped people relate to the Christmas message more vividly. Ever since then, the Baby Jesus has been shown on his humble birthday and in his humble setting, in local scenes that have not a hint of Jerusalem: an Italian setting for Italian viewers (or an Arctic scene for Eskimos) to connect more intimately with the story of the Nativity.

  • Rick Steves European Christmas PREVIEW

    30

From manger scenes and mistletoe to wintry wonderlands, RICK STEVES' EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS celebrates the Christmas season throughout the European continent. In the special, Rick visits friends and families in England, France, Norway, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy to reveal their customs and practices of the holiday season. He begins his travels in England, where the Christmas pudding is the real centerpiece of a traditional English holiday meal. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower heralds the season with its red, twinkling lights. And in the countryside of Tuscany, villagers stack neat pyramids of wood for great bonfires. The lighting of the fires is a signal to villagers - dressed as shepherds - to come and sing old carols. RICK STEVES' EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS offers a colorful, musical celebration of Christmas across Europe where viewers will learn about customs from the old countries, hear local choirs, and discover holiday family traditions.

Airs Wednesday, November 30th at 8 p.m. on PBS 6.
