  • NASAs Perseverance rover successfully lands on the surface of Mars | FULL

    2:5:00

NASA's rover, Perseverance, successfully landed on the surface of Mars on Thursday after seven months of travel through space. Perseverance landed in the Jezero Crater on the Red Planet and sent back its first image of Mars shortly after landing.

1:39:00 Ground controllers at the space agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, cheered and exchanged fist bumps and high-fives in triumph — and relief — on receiving confirmation that the six-wheeled Perseverance had touched down on the Red Planet.

It took a tension-filled 11 1/2 minutes for the signal to reach Earth.

“Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance safely on the surface of Mars,” flight controller Swati Mohan announced.

The biggest, most sophisticated Mars rover ever built — a car-size vehicle bristling with cameras, microphones, drills and lasers, is a long-range project to bring the first Martian rock samples back to Earth to be analyzed for evidence of ancient life.

The landing marks the third visit to Mars in just over a week. Two spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates and China swung into orbit around Mars on successive days last week.

All three missions were taking advantage of the close alignment of Earth and Mars, travelling some 300 million miles in nearly seven months.

Perseverance, the biggest, most advanced rover ever sent by NASA, became the ninth spacecraft to successfully land on Mars, every one of them from the U.S.

  • NASAs Perseverance Rover Lands Successfully on Mars

    1:05

After a seven-month-long journey, NASA’s Perseverance Rover successfully touched down on the Red Planet on Feb. 18, 2021. Mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California celebrate landing NASA's fifth -- and most ambitious -- rover on Mars.

A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

Also flying with Perseverance is NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which will attempt to show controlled, powered flight is possible in the very thin Martian atmosphere.

  • NASA Shows Perseverance Rovers First Successful Drive on Mars

    1:03

NASA on Friday said its Mars 2020 Perseverance rover successfully conducted the first drive on Martian surface on Thursday.

The space agency showed a still photo of rover's wheel tracks on Mars.

So, where the tires made contact or the wheel, I should say or the wheels made contact with the ground when we landed. You can see the wheel tracks that we left on Mars. I don't think I've ever been happier to see wheel tracks and I've seen a lot of them. And this is just a huge milestone for the mission and the mobility team, Anais Zarifian, Perseverance mobility test bed engineer at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said during the virtual press conference.

Perseverance landed on Mars on Feb. 18, accomplishing the riskiest step yet in an epic quest to bring back rocks that could answer whether life ever existed on Mars.

Perseverance, the biggest, most advanced rover ever sent by NASA, became the ninth spacecraft since the 1970s to successfully land on Mars, every one of them from the U.S.

The car-size, plutonium-powered vehicle arrived at Jezero Crater, hitting NASA's smallest and trickiest target yet: a 5-by-4-mile strip on an ancient river delta full of pits, cliffs and rocks.

NASA has named the landing site of the agency's Perseverance rover after the science fiction author Octavia E. Butler.

Scientists believe that if life ever flourished on Mars, it would have happened 3 billion to 4 billion years ago, when water still flowed on the planet.

  • Perseverance Rover’s Descent and Touchdown on Mars

    3:26

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance mission captured thrilling footage of its rover landing in Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The real footage in this video was captured by several cameras that are part of the rover's entry, descent, and landing suite. The views include a camera looking down from the spacecraft's descent stage (a kind of rocket-powered jet pack that helps fly the rover to its landing site), a camera on the rover looking up at the descent stage, a camera on the top of the aeroshell (a capsule protecting the rover) looking up at that parachute, and a camera on the bottom of the rover looking down at the Martian surface.

The audio embedded in the video comes from the mission control call-outs during entry, descent, and landing.

NASA on Monday released first-of-its-kind video of a spacecraft landing on another planet, as multiple cameras captured its Perseverance rover touching down on the surface of Mars.

The U.S. space agency landed Perseverance on the red planet last week after a more than six-month voyage from Earth.

The Perseverance rover was built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and is the most technologically advanced robot ever sent to Mars. The agency plans to spend nearly two years using the plutonium-powered Perseverance to explore the surface. NASA spent about $2.4 billion to build and launch the Perseverance mission, with another $300 million in costs for landing and operating the rover on the Mars surface.

Perseverance is also carrying a small helicopter named Ingenuity, which NASA plans to use to attempt the first flight on another planet.

The rover, about the size of a small car, weighs about one ton and is 10 feet long by 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall. It has a robotic arm that reaches about seven feet, the end of which has a robotic “hand” that has a camera, a chemical analyzer and a rock drill. Perseverance is nuclear powered, with a plutonium generator provided by the U.S. Department of Energy to generate electricity for its pair of lithium-ion batteries.

Perseverance traveled 293 million miles to reach Mars after it launched from Florida on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on July 30.

This is the first time we've been able to actually capture an event like the landing of a spacecraft on Mars, Michael Watkins, the director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), said in a news conference Monday, adding that he hopes the video will bring viewers along on the journey.

Join mission experts for update about the rover – the biggest, heaviest, cleanest, and most sophisticated six-wheeled robot ever launched into space – including imagery it captured and its mission to explore Mars.

    Rover Name: Perseverance
Main Job: Seek signs of ancient life and collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) for possible return to Earth.
    Launch: July 30, 2020
    Landing: Feb. 18, 2021
    Landing Site: Jezero Crater, Mars

The agency will share the video captured by cameras on the rover, which will show the perspective of a spacecraft landing on Mars for the first time.
The press conference will air live on NASA's website at 2 p.m. ET.
While previous spacecraft have sent back movies, which are really just images stitched together in GIF-form, Perseverance has cameras with video capability. Altogether, the rover has 23 cameras, which include zooming and color capabilities as well.
It's possible that the video could include audio captured by one of the rover's two microphones, which was switched on to hear the sounds of entry, descent and landing.

The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith, paving the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.

Once it landed, Perseverance took the above picture of its own front right wheel. “We have now actually seen what it looks like right under the wheels,” said Hallie Abarca at JPL, also a member of the Perseverance team, in the press conference.

NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover safely touched down on the Red Planet on Feb. 18. So what will the robotic scientist see on her descent and what will she do next? Join mission experts for update about the rover – the biggest, heaviest, cleanest, and most sophisticated six-wheeled robot ever launched into space – including imagery it captured and its mission to explore Mars.

The rover landed in Jezero crater, which may have once been a lake bed. The rocks underneath its wheels, which are probably between 3.6 and 3.8 billion years old, may be ancient lake sediments. NASA scientists’ first impressions from the image are that they may be volcanic rocks, which will require further investigation.

Ingenuity, the Mars Helicopter I carry, is working as expected. I’m currently charging it, but once I set it down, it’ll rely solely on its solar panels. If it survives the brutally cold Martian nights, the team will attempt flight

The technology demonstration has phoned home from where it is attached to the belly of NASA’s Perseverance rover.

Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California have received the first status report from the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, which landed Feb. 18, 2021, at Jezero Crater attached to the belly of the agency’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. The downlink, which arrived at 3:30 p.m. PST (6:30 p.m. EST) via a connection through the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, indicates that both the helicopter, which will remain attached to the rover for 30 to 60 days, and its base station (an electrical box on the rover that stores and routes communications between the rotorcraft and Earth) are operating as expected.

“There are two big-ticket items we are looking for in the data: the state of charge of Ingenuity’s batteries as well as confirmation the base station is operating as designed, commanding heaters to turn off and on to keep the helicopter’s electronics within an expected range,” said Tim Canham, Ingenuity Mars Helicopter operations lead at JPL. “Both appear to be working great. With this positive report, we will move forward with tomorrow’s charge of the helicopter’s batteries.”

Having stuck its nail-biting landing, the Perseverance rover will now collect rocks to return to Earth and record Mars sounds for the first time

NASA has sent its Perseverance rover to collect samples, search for signs of past microbial life and even unleash an experimental helicopter.
    Rover Name: Perseverance
Main Job: Seek signs of ancient life and collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) for possible return to Earth.
    Launch: July 30, 2020
    Landing: Feb. 18, 2021
    Landing Site: Jezero Crater, Mars
Perseverance launched on July 30, 2020, kicking off a months-long journey through space. It is scheduled to arrive at the red planet early in 2021. Landing is a tense process, but if all goes well, Perseverance will join Curiosity as NASA's only functioning rovers on Mars.

    Jezero Crater
NASA's Perseverance rover will touch down in a previously unexplored part of Mars called Jezero Crater. The space agency announced the winning landing site in late 2018.

This Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image shows the Jezero Crater delta region. The landing site in Jezero Crater offers geologically rich terrain, with landforms reaching as far back as 3.6 billion years old, that could potentially answer important questions in planetary evolution and astrobiology, said NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen.

'NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover Sends Back First Images From Red Planet'

A one-tonne spacecraft has become the second NASA rover to touch down on Mars after a perilous six-month journey through space.

In the first pictures transmitted from its landing site in the Jezero crater, the rover - named Perseverance - appeared to be in great shape and will now begin its mission, collecting rock samples to be analysed for signs of ancient microscopic life.

The crater, thought to have held a giant lake billions of years ago, could provide key evidence of extra-terrestrial life.

Mars has long been a death trap for incoming craft, though Perseverance managed to hurtle through the Red Planet's thin atmosphere and land safely on the Martian surface.

  • Nasas Perseverance Rover Makes Historic Mars Landing, Sends First Image | India Today

    2:03

National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (Nasa) Mars rover Perseverance streaked through the orange Martian sky and landed on the red planet around 2:30 am on Friday, accomplishing the most dangerous step yet in an epic quest to bring back rocks that could answer whether life ever existed on Mars.
Nearly seven months after its takeoff to Mars, Nasa's Perseverance rove made a historic landing on the red planet, becoming the fifth Nasa rover ever to touch down on Mars after Sojourner -- twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity and Curiosity, the US space agency said.
Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance safely on the surface of Mars, flight controller Swati Mohan announced.
After, what is termed as the toughest touchdown, Perseverance will spend the coming years scouring for signs of ancient microbial life in a historic mission that will bring back samples from Mars to Earth and prepare the way for future human visitors, Nasa said.
Meanwhile, Nasa scientists describe Perseverance as the most ambitious of nearly 20 US missions to Mars dating back to a 1965 Mariner fly-by.
The landing marks the third visit to Mars in just over a week. Two spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates and China swung into orbit around Mars on successive days last week.
All three missions lifted off in July to take advantage of the close alignment of Earth and Mars, traveling some 300 million miles in nearly seven months. Watch full bulletin.
