    Silence & Solitude: Yellowstone's Winter Wilderness (2005)

Winter, Yellowstone's longest season, creates a landscape of majestic beauty, bitter cold and extreme danger, where endurance is the game and survival the prize. This show brings us video and still photographs by Tom Murphy, Livingston's noted photographer and wilderness guide, and an original score by Scott Billadeau, formerly on the University of Montana faculty and now a resident of Missoula. Narrated by William Marcus.

  • Yellowstone In Winter HD

    21:44

Yellowstone gets a lot of snow in the winter, averaging three feet in January and closing most of the roads in the park. Snowmobiles and snow coaches are the only vehicles allowed, There are several hundred elk in the snow-covered meadow, but we will spook them if we try to get closer. However, they are comfortable with horses, so an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh is the best way to get good footage. Coyotes are opportunistic hunters, surviving primarily on small mammals, such as voles, prairie dogs, rabbits, ground squirrels, and mice. Red foxes are omnivores with a highly varied diet, feeding primarily on small rodents.

The bison is truly a majestic animal. An adult bull may measure six feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 2,000 pounds. Females look like the males except that they are smaller and have more slender horns. Bison mate from July through early August, and the calves are born in April and May.

Right on time, Old Faithful is the symbol of Yellowstone National Park. Its unparalleled array of geysers, hot springs, mud pots and steam vents provide evidence of the active volcano below our feet. In Yellowstone, you are standing in one of the world's largest active volcanoes.

    2:54

During the winter of December 2013 and January 2014, I visited Yellowstone National Park, to photograph the park, when its turned into a 'Winterwonderland'. In this video you will find some of my images that I took there, and at the end you will see... sometimes photography is'nt easy. Hiking through deep snow was something we had to do almost every day, but.. it's totally worth it!
We had some awesome encounters with amazing animals. Met some realy nice people, and enjoyed nature for the full 100%!

All the images in this video are taken with a Canon eos 7D, Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 OS and the 17-40mm f/4 L.

SOLITUDE AT THE END OF THE WORLD
Tierra del Fuego . Argentina 2002-05
    35mm/DVCAM Color 52 min.

    Synopsis:

In one of the least populated regions of the world, few men lead lives in total solitude, spending months and months alone. This documentary tells the story of three of these men. Isolated from the world for different reasons. They survive in a suspended time of their own. In one of the most difficult environments of the world.

    Director's Statement:

We were looking for extreme solitude cases, trying to understand what drives men to loneliness, to isolation. We try to understand their stories their reasons, their inner strength, their suffering, we lived with them, in silence, with respect to try to catch up with their rhythms their customs, and then trying to capture their stories, with beauty, dignity and dedication. We were interested in the atmospheric feeling of isolation the relation to it ́s Patagonian landscape. Trying to capture time in this extreme situations. The documentary became an amazing anthropological and physical experience for both the subject and the authors.

  • Starting Yellowstone

    1:11

In 2018, my nephew Matt invited me to join him on a great adventure in Yellowstone National Park: a two week hike in the backcountry of the southern half of the park. We would start at the eastern shore of Yellowstone Lake and end at Old Faithful, covering about 140 miles in between. We first drove to the south entrance of the park, where we would leave our resupply packages. When we arrived, I shot this video of a backpacker crossing the Snake river, something we would need to do in about a week. Later we met this hiker, John Wilson, in the parking lot, where he kindly offered us our first ride as we hitched to the trailhead. My sincere thanks to him, and to Matt for organizing the expedition.

I wanted to go to Yellowstone during the off season and with roads due to close any day now I headed due east.
