    Breakthrough Solid State Battery - 900 Wh/L Samsung [2020]

    Samsung research was led by Yong-Gun Lee for an All-Solid-State-Battery (ASSBs). Their goal was to eliminate dendrites formation and increase coulombic efficiency.
    To do that they sandwiched layers of Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Oxide (NMC for short) mixed with a Sulfide Solid Electrolytes (SSE, show formula on screen), on top of nanocomposite-layer of Silver-Carbon.
    All of this is located in between a foil of Aluminum and Stainless steel as the current collectors.
    The idea behind this was to remove lithium foil from the mix and have all lithium atoms part of the NMC and SSE. This approach diminishes the costs of the overall battery manufacturing since handling lithium usually needs an oxygen free environment due to its high reactivity.
    This is important for a few reasons, in conventional lithium batteries, the anode comprised of lithium moves freely towards the positive electrode during discharge.
    Dendrites are formed during the charging process when lithium moves back to its initial location thanks to the free movement enabled by liquid or gel electrolyte.
    This is the main limiting factor of how much energy can be store in these batteries since to control this, the amount of lithium available in the system has to be caped, limiting the energy density.

    Is it really a breakthrough? When will we get it? In this video I do a deep dive into Samsung's 'Breakthrough' 900wh/l Solid State Battery that delivers a cycle life of 1000 cycles. Samsung's researchers have claimed that their battery reduces dendrite formation. They plate a smooth layer of lithium metal by introducting a silver-carbon layer to reduce nucleation energy and increase conductivity of the lithium ions. This is kind of like adding water to pancake batter and increasing gravity to make smooth flat pancakes.

    Ever since Sony released the first commercial Lithium Ion Battery in 1991, the technology has been great, powering our mobile computers, cordless power tools, and electric vehicles.
    But we will need even better battery technology in order to power the innovations of the future!
    A future filled with robots, electric VTOLs, and electric vehicles with ranges comparable to their petrol counterparts.
    There are many researchers around the world developing cutting-edge battery technology, and the technology I am most excited about is Solid State Battery Technology.
    Research for Solid State Battery Technology has exploded recently and there is a global race to develop and commercialize it.
    But before we get into all of that, since Solid State Batteries are similar to Lithium Ion batteries, let’s quickly cover how a lithium-ion battery works.
    First, solid state batteries will be safer.
    You see, the liquid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries are flammable, and the batteries creates a lot of heat.
    On top of being safer, solid-state batteries will perform better than batteries today.

    So before I can explain how super capacitors will fix this, let’s back up and explain how batteries work in the first place.

    To make it simple, batteries work by moving electrons from a negatively charged material called an anode to a positively charged material called the cathode, and the device siphons off those electrons to power the device.

    For instance, nickel cadmium batteries use a nickel oxide cathode and a cadmium anode. Hence the name.

    This is a chemical process called oxidation that involves an electrolyte layer sandwiched between the electrodes.

    In the case of the nickel cadmium batteries, they use potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte.

    But this is a one-shot deal. The chemical reaction releases the electrons, but there’s no way to re-introduce electrons into the equation.

    So they’re not rechargeable. And for a world increasingly reliant on portable devices, that’s just not good enough.

    Enter Lithium-Ion batteries, which were developed in the 1970’s by John B. Goodenough. That’s his real name. That’s not a joke.

    Lithium ion batteries have a cathode made of lithium, duh, and an anode made of carbon, again with an electrolyte between the layers to facilitate the reaction.

    The difference is lithium will absorb more electrons, so it can be recharged. But it is still a chemical reaction, so it can only reintroduce those electrons at a certain charge rate.

    Super capacitors work differently. Instead of using a chemical reaction to make electrons flow, also called and electrochemical process, they use static electricity, or an electrostatic process.

    Now, capacitors have been in our computers for decades, and they work by holding opposite charges between two metallic plates separated by a dielectric material.

    Super capacitors, as you may have already figured out, are larger versions of capacitors that use a double layer to hold more energy. In fact they’re sometimes called double-layer capacitors.

    And the cool thing about them is that since the electricity is static and not chemical, there’s far less resistance to the charge. In fact, it’s almost instantaneous.

    The problem is, they don’t hold that much energy. You need a vast amount of surface area to hold enough energy to make them really useful.

    So Lithium Ion batteries are very energy dense, meaning they hold a lot more stored energy, but super capacitors are very power dense, meaning the transfer the energy much faster.

    If, theoretically, you could create super capacitors that could hold as much as a lithium ion battery, you’d have cell phones that could recharge in seconds and it would be good for the rest of the day.

    And dare we dream it? An EV car that fully charges faster than it takes to pump gas.

    There is one material that could make this dream a reality. It’s called graphene.

    Graphene is basically a one-atom thick lattice of carbon atoms that has some ridiculous properties. It’s 200 times stronger than steel, but incredibly light, biodegradable, biocompatible, meaning it can be used in the human body.

    They say it can be used to desalinate sea water, make space elevators, and form the basis for supercomputers, but for our purposes, it also happens to be one of the most electrically capacitive substances known to man.

    It has the same energy density as lithium ion batteries with the power density of super capacitors. And since it’s only one atom thick, you can pack a ton of surface area into a small space.

    With any luck, in the next 10-15 years, we’ll have super capacitor batteries that can handle energy densities at industrial scales giving us quick, plentiful electricity whenever we need it.

    Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Introduces Fast-Charging, Noncombustible Batteries

    A team of engineers led by 94-year-old John Goodenough, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, has developed the first all-solid-state battery cells that could lead to safer, faster-charging, longer-lasting rechargeable batteries for handheld mobile devices, electric cars and stationary energy storage.

    BU-204: How do Lithium Batteries Work?

    Lithium is the lightest of all metals, has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the largest specific energy per weight. Rechargeable batteries with lithium metal on the anode could provide extraordinarily high energy densities; however, it was discovered in the mid-1980s that cycling produced unwanted dendrites on the anode. These growth particles penetrate the separator and cause an electrical short. The cell temperature would rise quickly and approach the melting point of lithium, causing thermal runaway, also known as 'venting with flame.'

    Researchers have struggled for decades to safely use powerful-but flammable-lithium metal in a battery. Now John Goodenough, the 94-year-old father of the lithium-ion battery, is claiming a novel solution as a blockbuster advance. If it proves out, the invention could allow electric cars to compete with conventional vehicles on sticker price. The improbable solution, described in a new paper from Goodenough and three co-authors, has drawn intense interest from leading science and technology publications.

    Formation and aging costs, coupled with limitations in construction due to lamination, physical limits of transport and mechanics and limited ability to integrate new materials into the existing manufacturing approach, will severely limit gains in performance and safety in this generation of technology. The incumbent technology further requires massive downstream costs to assure the safety of these liquid-based systems, in the form of safety and containment systems. Examination of a mapping of the available materials against their probable effect on cell properties yields a simple conclusion: the incumbent technology benefits have essentially reached their limit, as established holistically by laboratory developments, optimization simulations, and recent commercially reported properties.

    Solid state battery technology, though offering a very different development path enabling breakthrough performance and safety, has been relegated to the realm of R&D due to intrinsically high cost, unscalable manufacturing processes that result in high cell cost. Recently, however, Sakti3, a university spinout founded by researchers and engineers with decades of experience in battery research and thin film and other manufacturing, developed an approach for production of cells which offers all of the benefits of the theoretically highest energy density materials available. These massively replicable, cheap and reliable production methods enable cell manufacturing in a single, unified line and produce product that is ready to ship.

    Integration of new, environmentally benign energy generation technologies will require improved energy storage both for regulation of load, and for storage of solar and wind power. Non emissive automobiles and use of existing electrical power grids to power them, require safe, onboard traction storage systems. And finally, the democratization of information and the use of mobile devices as the primary, and often the only, connectivity to the internet and commerce, requires safe, high energy density storage technology be available to the consumer. We discuss our vision for technology deployment and future product development using solid state processing of energy storage technology and integration into existing and new infrastructures.

    Ann Marie Sastry brings over 25 years’ leadership and technical experience to her role at Sakti3, building a management team with experience in finance, manufacturing and technology. She personally trained the core technical team. Sastry has co-authored over 70 awarded and filed patents, over 100 scientific publications, and delivered over 100 invited lectures at research, government and private institutions globally.

    Prior to leading Sakti3, Sastry was the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Tenured and promoted early, she founded and led two research centers in batteries and bioscience, and a global graduate program. Her laboratory originated the technical work that underpins Sakti3 technology, and was continuously funded by the DOE for over 17 years. She also led work sponsored by NSF, NIH, Army, ONR, DARPA, General Motors, Ford, LBNL, and ORNL. She has received several of the highest technical honors in her field, including the 2011 ASME Frank Kreith Energy Award, 2007 ASME Gustus Larson Award and the NSF's PECASE (1997). She holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University, and a BS from the University of Delaware, in Mechanical Engineering.
