  • LIVE: SpaceX Attempts Falcon 9 Rocket Launch of Dragon 2 With NASA Astronauts

    3:20:43

(May 30) Elon Musk’s SpaceX will try again Saturday to launch astronauts into orbit after a NASA mission on May 27 was scrubbed because of bad weather.

The voyage to the International Space Station -- scheduled for 3:22 p.m. -- will be the first launch of American astronauts from U.S. soil since 2011. It’s also the first orbital journey in a commercially developed spacecraft. But the weather is again a threat at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

There’s a 50% chance the launch will go ahead, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a tweet Saturday morning.

The groundbreaking mission is the final major test of Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s human flight system before it can be certified to fly working crews to and from the space station. Boeing Co. is also preparing to carry people to the orbiting lab as part of the same “Commercial Crew” program at NASA.

If the SpaceX launch attempt of its Falcon 9 rocket gets scrubbed again, Sunday will serve as a backup. In the mission, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will ride the company’s Dragon capsule to the space station.

Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp. in 2002 with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been a key partner and customer every step of the way for the Hawthorne, California-based company. A cargo-only version of SpaceX’s Dragon capsule already makes regular runs to the space station.

President Donald Trump, who flew in on Air Force One shortly before the launch time on May 27, indicated he would return for the next attempt. The White House’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, later told reporters that Trump would return if a launch takes place this weekend.

  • Starlink Mission

    31:52

SpaceX is targeting Wednesday June 3 at 9:25 p.m. EDT, 1:25 UTC on June 4, for its eighth launch of Starlink satellites. Falcon 9 will lift off from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. A backup opportunity is available on Thursday, June 4 at 9:03 p.m. EDT, 1:03 UTC on June 5.

Falcon 9’s first stage previously supported the Telstar 18 VANTAGE mission in September 2018, the Iridium-8 mission in January 2019, and two separate Starlink missions in May 2019 and in January 2020. Following stage separation, SpaceX will land Falcon 9’s first stage on the “Just Read the Instructions” droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Starlink satellites will deploy in an elliptical orbit approximately 15 minutes after liftoff. Prior to orbit raise, SpaceX engineers will conduct data reviews to ensure all Starlink satellites are operating as intended. Once the checkouts are complete, the satellites will then use their onboard ion thrusters to move into their intended orbits and operational altitude of 550 km.

The flight, known as Crew Dragon Demo-2, bridges the gap left behind by the space shuttle program's final flight in July 2011. It's the first time a private company has sent humans into orbit — and the first time in nearly a decade that the United States has launched astronauts into orbit from U.S. soil. Ever since the space shuttle was retired in 2011, NASA has relied on Russian spaceships launched from Kazakhstan to take U.S. astronauts to and from the space station.

SpaceX has sent Nasa astronauts into space in a historic mission.

It is the first time that humans have been shot into space from US soil since the Space Shuttle programme ended in 2011. And it is the first time that humans have been sent into space by a private company, a feat only previous achieved by the space agencies of the US, Russia and China.

SpaceX and Nasa hailed the achievement as the beginning of a plan that should make it far cheaper to head into space, and which could lead to humans being sent back to the Moon and Mars.

A new astronaut capsule, which launched on Saturday from Florida on a Falcon rocket, has successfully guided itself into the International Space Station using computers and sensors.

Astronauts on board ISS have now been inside the capsule.
The Dragon SpaceX demonstration flight vehicle will stay docked until 8 March when it will detach and drop to Earth.

It will have to come through its descent unscathed so that Nasa can approve its readiness to carry people, which could happen as early as July.

  • NASA resumes human spaceflight with successful SpaceX launch

    2:08

미국 SpaceX의 우주선, 우주인들 궤도 진입

The American aerospace company Space X has made history with the successful launch of two astronauts into orbit on the Falcon 9, its reusable rocket.
The automated capsule, Dragon Crew, is on its way to the International Space Station.
    Kim Do-yeon has this story.
Falcon 9 lifted off on Saturday, local time, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Attached was the Dragon capsule, carrying two astronauts from NASA, and the capsule successfully separated from the rocket and reached orbit.
This is the first time the U.S. has sent astronauts into space from its own soil in nearly a decade.
During that time, the U.S. had to rely on Russia to reach space... at a cost of up to 90 million U.S. dollars a seat.
The two astronauts, Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken, are experienced, having each been into space twice, but this trip is different.
The capsule's interior has touch screens like those on Tesla cars, and it has auto-pilot.
When needed, though, the astronauts can take over.
President Trump praised the launch and looked forward to more developments.

We have created the envy of the world, and will soon be landing on Mars and will soon have the greatest weapons ever imagined in history -- I've already seen designs, and even I can't believe it. The United States has regained our place of prestige as the world leader. As has often been stated, you can't be number one on Earth if you are number two in space

Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 with the dream of reaching Mars.
The company, along with Boeing in 2014, was awarded a contract to carry humans into space, which at the time was a mission doubted by many.
Now, it has become the first private company to achieve that.
After the Dragon capsule separated, Falcon 9 successfully returned to earth and landed on its launch pad, and the astronauts are expected to reach the International Space Station by 11 PM Sunday, Korea time.
