  • What SpaceXs all-civilian launch to orbit means for investors

    4:24

Space Capital's Chad Anderson and Ark Invest's Sam Korus discuss the first all-civilian space travel with CNBC's Morgan Brennan. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to make history with a launch of four civilians in what would be the first full crew of nonprofessional astronauts to fly to space.

The mission, known as Inspiration4, is scheduled to lift off Wednesday night, with a five-hour window that opens at 8:02 p.m. ET.

The mission is the creation of SpaceX and billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, 38-year-old founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments. Isaacman purchased the multiday flight from SpaceX for an undisclosed fee, with the goal of raising awareness and funding for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“This is significant and historic because it’s going to be the highest that any humans have gone into orbit since the Hubble [Space Telescope] servicing missions,” SpaceX senior director of human spaceflight Benji Reed told reporters Tuesday. The last Hubble servicing mission was in May 2009. “Another historic part for SpaceX is that this will be the first time that we have three [Dragon capsules] in orbit.”

Isaacman and the Inspiration4 team have worked with SpaceX to train since announcing the flight in February. He noted that the crew on Tuesday met with company leadership — including Musk, who “gave us his assurances again that the entire leadership team is solely focused on this mission.”

Asked how he felt with less than 24 hours to liftoff, Isaacman said he had “no jitters, excited to get going.”

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule was developed with heavy investment from NASA, which has flown 10 of its professional astronauts on the spacecraft. While the space agency has comparatively minimal involvement in the Inspiration4 launch, NASA director of commercial spaceflight Phil McAlister told CNBC that private missions were one of the goals set when contributing government funds to SpaceX’s vehicle.

“We are seeing a sort of renaissance in commercial orbital human space transportation,” McAlister said. “For the first time in human history, you can go to a private company and purchase a ticket to orbit. You’ve never been able to do that; historically, you had to go to a government agency.”

The first all-civilian mission to orbit is launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Jared Isaacman, founder and CEO of the payments processing company Shift4 Payments (FOUR), paid for the mission, called Inspiration4.

Four people, none of whom are professional astronauts, will spend three days orbiting Earth on the Dragon spacecraft developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Besides going on the trip of a lifetime, the crew will have time to conduct experiments related to human physiology in microgravity.

Space is a unique environment and there are opportunities to use the microgravity environment to find and develop new treatments and cures for various diseases and ailments, founder of Space Advisors and author of Space is Open for Business, Robert Jacobson told Yahoo Finance.

Props to Elon Musk for being open to flying Inspiration4. His approval of this mission means that he is confident in the safety and reliability of the vehicle, his teams, and the rest of the necessary infrastructure, he added.

The capsule will travel approximately 350 miles above Earth, orbiting higher than the International Space Station.

  • All-civilian SpaceX flight returns to Earth

    1:58

CNBC's Morgan Brennan takes a look the historic SpaceX all-civilian space flight with the Inspiration4 crew and its return to Earth. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

After SpaceX completed a historic, private spaceflight on Saturday, CEO Elon Musk took a pot shot at President Joe Biden who had yet to remark on the company’s and the civilian flight crew’s accomplishments.

One of Musk’s 60 million followers on the social networking platform Twitter asked him, “The President of the United States has refused to even acknowledge the 4 newest American astronauts who helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars for St. Jude. What’s your theory on why that is?”

    Musk replied, “He’s still sleeping.”

As CNBC previously reported, SpaceX safely returned its Crew Dragon spacecraft from orbit yesterday. The capsule carried the four members of the Inspiration4 mission back to Earth after three days in space.

One major goal of the Inspiration4 mission was to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It had raised $160.2 million by Saturday. Celebrating after Inspiration4 splashed down, Musk pledged to contribute $50 million personally — pushing the campaign’s total raised to $210 million.

The White House and SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Top NASA officials have congratulated Musk and SpaceX on the Inspiration4 mission. SpaceX competitors acknowledged it too, with accolades from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Blue Origin and Musk’s peer and rival Jeff Bezos shared on social media.

This marked the first private SpaceX spaceflight, with a non-professional crew. Additionally, the mission involved the first Black woman to serve as a spacecraft pilot, the youngest American to become an astronaut to date, and the first person to fly in space with a prosthesis.

Although Musk recently stated that he “would prefer to stay out of politics,” his quip on Sunday indicated a willingness to needle the Democratic president and repeat a right-wing taunt about Biden.

During his 2020 campaign, former President Donald Trump frequently insulted then-candidate Biden by calling him “Sleepy Joe.”

More recently, Trump sent Biden sarcastic well-wishes ahead of a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in June. He said in an e-mailed statement at the time, “Good luck to Biden in dealing with President Putin— don’t fall asleep during the meeting, and please give him my warmest regards!”

SpaceX generally enjoys a good relationship with the federal government. For example, it won a $2.89 billion contract to build NASA’s next crewed lunar lander, beating out Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Leidos subsidiary Dynetics, and SpaceX has flown 10 astronauts to the ISS for NASA to date.

However, SpaceX is also under investigation by the Department of Justice after accusations that it discriminated against job applicants based on citizenship status — a probe that began during the Trump administration.

In addition to his responsibilities at SpaceX, Musk is concurrently the CEO of electric vehicle makers Tesla. (Tesla is also a supplier to SpaceX.)

In that capacity, he recently bemoaned a Biden administration proposal that would allocate an extra $4,500 in incentives to buyers of certain, new electric light-duty passenger vehicles. One stipulation of the proposal is that electric vehicles should be union-made, domestically.

While the company operates a battery factory in Nevada, and a vehicle assembly plant in California already, with another under construction outside of Austin, Texas, Tesla is the only major U.S. automaker whose production is not unionized here.

  • SpaceX all-civilain crew set to launch into orbit, heres what you need to know

    2:04

The first all-civilian mission to orbit is expected to launch this evening via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

    Who's going
Isaacman, who is also an accomplished pilot, will be commanding the mission. He donated the other crew seats to raise money for St. Jude's Hospital. Each of the voyagers was selected differently. All went through commercial astronaut training in preparation for the mission.

Hayley Arceneaux, a 29-year-old physicians' assistant at St. Jude's Hospital will be going. She is also a bone cancer survivor and had been treated at the facility when she was younger. Arceneaux will become the youngest American and the first person with a prosthesis to travel to space.

Dr. Sian Proctor is a 51-year-old geoscientist and STEM educator selected for the mission via an online contest. She will be the fourth Black woman in the United States to go to orbit.

The fourth seat was won via a raffle for St. Jude's Hospital. The winner gifted the seat to Christopher Sembroski, a 42-year-old Lockheed Martin (LMT) employee.

How this launch differs from Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson's voyages
Isaacman is the third billionaire to pay for a space-related voyage this year, and the first to fund a private voyage to orbit on a SpaceX vehicle.

Comparing this trip to Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin mission on July 20th, or Virgin Galactic (SPCE) founder Richard Branson's recent voyage is apples to oranges, says Jacobson.

Sub-orbital flights, which is what Branson and Bezos have successfully completed is difficult, but not nearly as difficult as orbital flights said Jacobson.

Orbital flights takes more technical complexity, more fuel, everything, recourses — It's a big deal, he added.

Musk's SpaceX has been focused on orbital travel from the start, while Bezos' Blue Origin is working toward orbital voyages. Both have been around for almost the same amount of time.

'Eventually, it will be more of a regular occurrence'
Expect to see more missions like these in the future, says Robertson. Axiom Space has contracted SpaceX for several commercial missions. The first one is scheduled for later this year.

Eventually, it will be more of a regular occurrence that private individuals and/or organizations will purchase seats or entire missions for these orbital and longer duration flights on vehicles that were designed, developed and manufactured by private businesses, added Jacobson.

Liftoff is expected to happen sometime on Wednesday night, no earlier than 8:02 p.m. EDT from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Upon completion of the three-day journey, Dragon will reenter Earth’s atmosphere for a soft water landing off the coast of Florida.
