    Kings of Lions Documentary:

In encounters with the king of beasts, an unarmed person is “one of the most helpless creatures,” notes Charles Guggisberg in Simba: the Life of the Lion. “Man cannot run as fast as a zebra or a gazelle, he has not the horns of the sable antelope or the tusks of the warthog, and he cannot deal terrific blows like the giraffe.” People are, in other words, easy pickings. Even though Africa’s lion populations have been drastically reduced in the past decades, lions still regularly eat people; it’s not uncommon for them to kill more than 100 people a year in Tanzania alone.

Many man-eaters are wounded or old; some have been deprived of natural prey sources; others may simply have developed a fondness for human flesh. Most are nameless, but a few of the most notorious have been rather colorfully christened: Namvelieza, or The Cunning One, killed 43 people near Kasawa, Zambia. Tanzania’s Paper Lion got his name because he seemed to drift from victim to victim randomly, like a scrap of paper floating in the breeze.

This list of the most famous man-eaters includes mostly males, but females are actually responsible for more killings, according to University of Minnesota lion expert Craig Packer. However, lionesses tend to eat people in isolated instances, then return to their normal diet, while males “are more likely to become recidivists,” Packer says. The worst-case scenario, he says, is when a whole pride of males and females starts feeding on people: these lions are the most “persistent” threat to their human neighbors.

The lion (Panthera leo) has a number of characteristics that differentiate it from the other wild predatory cats of the world. One of the key differences is its social behavior. While some lions are nomadic and prefer to travel and hunt individually or in pairs, most lions live in a social organization known as a pride. It's a trait that's quite unique among the world's large cat species, most of which are lone hunters throughout their adult lives.

It is sexually dimorphic adult male lions have a prominent mane. A typical head-to-body length of 184–208 cm (72–82 in) is larger than females at 160–184 cm (63–72 in). It is a social species, forming groups called pride. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females, and cubs. • BIRMINGHAM BOYS - Knighthood From Djuma | LIONS OF AFRICA Episode 23

    15:15

Lions of Africa: Birmingham Boys (Gowrie) Lions - 5 males (2010 - 2021)*

...Little is known locally of their origin but there were six of them in the beginning and they came from a property known as Birmingham in the Timbavati; a conglomerate of privately owned concessions bordering the Kruger National Park’s western boundary. By the time they were first seen in the North-eastern corner of the Sabi Sand Reserve they were down to five. Apparently one had been killed in a dispute with older, more experienced lions and they were on the run.
The 3 old Birmingham males dominated Ngala for a number of years and they have fathered numerous cubs in and around Ngala, including the 5 Birmingham males of Sabi Sands. Back in October 2013, these males were reported by Tintswalo Safari Lodge as being part of a large pride of lions, called Birmingham or Orpen pride. They consisted of 22 Lions, of which were several young males, and are related to the Koppies and Mbiri females. Born around 2010/11 they originally came into the Sabi Sands in 2014, where they proceeded to send the Matimba males packing to the south and Jr. of the Nkuhuma Pride was forced to move out on his own.
In October 2016 WildEarth along with the reserve decided to name these five brothers:
BBoy #1: Nsuku (Formerly known as Blondie) Meaning: ‘gold’ – due to his blonde and golden mane. He died October 2019 after a long battle to recover from injuries to his back hip.
BBoy #2: Nhenha (Formerly known as #2) Meaning: ‘ Warrior’ – he was one of the front runners when Birminghams came in for takeover.
BBoy #3: Tinyo (Formerly known as Mo) Meaning: ‘Tooth’ – His canine is visible through his split lip scar.
BBoy #4: Mfumo (Formerly known as Samson) Meaning: “authority” / “to rule” – he is the biggest and the one we see most regularly. He disappeared around May 2018 in the Londolozi/Kruger area.
BBoy #5: Tokoloshe (Formerly known as Scrapper) Meaning that he was said to be like a boogyman. Tokoloshe was found dead on Buffelshoek property on April 24, 2016. He had been separated from the rest of the coalition for a few days and was not looking in the best of condition. It is presumed that he died from injuries of a punctured lung from a run in with a buffalo.
Territory had become a priority for the Birmingham males and – like the Majingilane and Mapogo coalitions before them – they made an entrance. The catalyst, sadly, was a new killed white rhino bull that had died of his wounds in a territorial fight: Driving into a Combretum thicket peppered with vultures and full bellied hyaena, hot on the trail of lion tracks, is usually as exciting as it gets on an early morning drive but on that particular day, it was a bleak and desperate scene. Those who were there saw two full grown male lions, one with a particularly dark and fulsome mane, casually gnawing on the two ton carcass. Not five minutes in, two other male lions of roughly the same size and age, charged in, almost catching them off guard. With a thumping battery of incessant growling, a fight ensued. The bush exploded as white-backed vultures erupted into the overcast sky and spotted hyaenas bolted for cover. Neither coalition backed down as they roared at each other from close quarters, all the while, marauding hyenas whooped for reinforcements. Suddenly, five other males appeared out of the long green grass some fifty meters away. They were equally spaced apart from each other, but all had their eyes wide open and fixed on the scene before them. Not a moment later, the cacophonous confusion was shattered as the Birmingham males, a volley of ferocious tooth and claw, rushed in on the scene. The original four males, self-preservation foremost in their minds, were in full retreat. As the drama shifted elsewhere, the dying echo of roaring lions reverberated through the surrounding bush. Eventually the Birmingham males returned to the carcass one by one, alert, looking wildly about them as though still searching for the one responsible for the death of their sibling. Unhurriedly, they began to feed.
In 2017 the four brothers (Mfumo, Nsuku, Nhenha, & Tinyo, headed south where they again let the Matimbas know it was time to move. As far as we know it was not a violent overthrow. They settled into Londolozi and parts of MalaMala where they continue to reign as of June 2021. They are aging and it is not known when or who will unseat these wonderful males. The same message that was once carried by the Majingilane and the Mapogo before them, one that proclaimed absolute dominance over everything and all.

similar to renaming killer whales to orca, many conservationists prefer using the name painted wolf derived from its binomial name Lycaon pictus

Africa once had over 500,000 painted wolves, packs of 100 were common, humans and lions are the main threats to painted wolves

A 20-Year Review of the Status and Distribution of African Painted Wolves (Lycaon pictus) in South Africa

February 2020 African Journal of Wildlife Research 50(1):8

    DOI:10.3957/056.050.0008

South Africa is one of only seven countries with a viable population of African painted wolves (Lycaon pictus).
The national population in 2017 was 372 adults and yearlings and comprised three subpopulations:
    1) Kruger National Park (Kruger),
    2) an intensively managed metapopulation established through reintroductions into isolated, fenced reserves, and
    3) a free-roaming population that occurs naturally outside protected areas.

We assessed the long-term (four painted wolves generations, ∼20 years) trends in population size and growth rate within each of these three subpopulations.
We found that Kruger supports a substantial population, which has declined over time.
The meta-population is the only subpopulation that has increased significantly over time (both in population size and number of packs), likely due to intensive conservation efforts and the reintroduction of painted wolves into 15 additional reserves since 1998.

The free-roaming subpopulation has remained small but stable, even though the number of packs has declined due to threats from humans.
The overall national population has remained stable even though the number of packs has increased. Kruger has consistently supported the highest proportion of the national population over the last two decades.
However, the contribution of the metapopulation has increased significantly over time.

It is clear that despite differences in survey effort among the three subpopulations, South Africa has a small (∼500) but stable population of painted wolves, with the metapopulation contribution becoming increasingly important.
The circumstances in the country necessitate, and demonstrate the benefit of, intensive, adaptive management for the national population of painted wolves.

While this assessment provides baseline information for the three subpopulations, painted wolf conservation in South Africa would benefit greatly from equal survey effort and standardized methods to accurately assess long-term population trends.

  • SEKEKAMA - Colossal King Of Savage Kingdom | LIONS OF AFRICA Episode 33

    18:06

Lions of Africa: Sekekama (2007) 1 male*
Note: The Lion War in Savute
In 2006 Savute was dominated by 2 males. The Mababe males, they entered Savute or Savuti in 2006 Killing a dominant male and expelling another.
In 2010/2011 the 5 Selinda males arrived, at that time Sekekama was the youngest of all. Sekekama arrived from the reserve Selinda, with his 4 brothers, their local name is Segxhagxhama. Sekekama and Stained Nose (or Torn nose) were born in (2007), the other 3 Males in (2005/2006).
Before the Arrival of Sekekama and his Brothers, Savute Marsh pride was dominated by 4 Adult Brothers. A great fight was unleashed in Savute, there was a winner, the 5 Selinda males including Sekekama took the power.
The male Sekekama against the older brothers: Now that they were dominant over the Marsh pride, a power struggle broke out within the coalition. Just as it happened with the famous Mapogos, when the two youngest (Mr. T & Kinky Tail) rebelled against the older ones, the two brothers Sekekama and Stained Nose wanted to be the dominant males but after so many months they had to discuss who would be the dominant male. The Selinda Lion Coalition splitted up in order to control more territory and have more offsprings, the fights are only about who will control the place. The two youngest brothers have to move south. The older 3 took over the North.
Sekekama and the Marsh pride became famous through the BBC documentaries Africa's Giant Killers (2014) and Return of the Giant Killers: Africa's Lion Kings (2015). Africa's largest herd of elephants face a fearless pride of lions in a fight for survival. The Marsh pride of lions has rewritten the rules - by learning to take down elephants. In these documentaries, we join the Marsh pride at the start of the rainy season. As the elephants depart, a catalogue of dramatic events unfolds. The 5 pride males (Selinda coalition) turn against each other, an inexperienced mum puts her new born cubs in mortal danger, a rival group of lions challenge the pride for its territory and, when lightning strikes, fires burn day and night. When the dust eventually settles, the pride is left with only one choice - to face their old foe the elephants or risk starvation. The final showdown awaits.
Sekekama's greatest fame came from the National Geographic TV series Savage Kingdom (2016 - 2020). Embattled places of Lion kings and scheming princes vie for the savage throne. The drama continues as sons plot to overthrow fathers and clans seek revenge on their enemies.
The bloodline of the mighty king lives on through his great sons: the so-called traitors Tsekedi, Blondie and Pretty boy but also the lesser known Snip tail and Sekoti.
Now 14 years old (Oct 2021), the ruler of Marsh has reached the end of his exciting life. We hope that he will stay with us for a while longer. SEKEKAMA...already a legend.

In the wild, predators the world over are successful hunters. They're honed by evolution and fueled by a need to survive; but in some places, the predators have learned to use the lie of the land to their advantage. Their tactics specifically fit the terrain they're hunting in. Get a close up look at the killer skills of two of Africa's most iconic predators. In northern Botswana is a piece of prime territory: Savuti. Here we see the extraordinary lengths that a pride of lions and a young leopard will go to, to secure a meal.

    1) Kruger National Park (Kruger),
    2) an intensively metapopulation established through reintroductions into isolated, fenced reserves, and
    3) a free-roaming population that occurs naturally outside protected areas.

    Lion Documentary - LIONS ON THE EDGE ( Hungry & Desperate Lions ) | Wild Planet #wildplanet #lion #liondocumentary -----------------------
Lions are a universal emblem of courage – the super-charged hunting beasts admired for centuries for their strength and prowess. More than any other animal, lions symbolise Africa. The roar of a lion fills the night – the world’s most chilling, spine-tingling sound - as powerful as the noise of a small plane taking off. It has a huge appetite: at one sitting, a hungry lion can eat the equivalent of a whole person. Its eyes are keen: this big tawny hunter has night vision six times better than ours. It’s a big killing machine: it weighs at least twice as much as a grown man, has claws like sharp switchblades, a rasping tongue much rougher than sandpaper. It can overpower animals far bigger than itself. Yet it can be gentle, caring and affectionate. Mothers even suckle each other’s cubs. The secret of the lion’s success is that it lives in a group – Africa’s most powerful land carnivore is the only truly social cat in the world. The mighty male’s life is fraught with danger, the sleek female’s with the cares of child-minding, warring with neighbours, and risking all in the hunt. So do lions have it made? We find out The Whole Story of life in the pride.
