  • 7 Cruise Ships Leaving Port at Fort Lauderdale

    4:51

Our cruise ship, the Holland America Eurodam, was sailing away from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, but amazingly 7 other cruise ships were leaving at around the same time as well. We saw the Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas right behind us, Carnival Conquest sailing away first, then the Regal Princess, Crown Princess, Celebrity Silhouette, Holland America Zuiderdam right next to it, and finally the Allure of the Seas. Kudos to the captains of the vessels and the port authority work /US Coast Guard for making all the sail aways go seemingly so smoothly, because several were sailing literally right behind another. There was a helicopter & coast guard boats to escort many of the cruise ships. This was a busy Sunday for sure.

There were some beautiful views of Port Everglades and its surroundings, and of Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center campus. We also heard the cruise ship horn of our ship as well. Enjoy!

This was from our December 2017 Caribbean cruise aboard the MS Eurodam.

If you own a car you will be bound to stop by at least once a week at a gas station! An average car has around 16 gallons of fuel (60 liters).

So if you are in Germany to fill up the tank of your car will cost around 60 Euros, in the US would be 36 Euros And in Venezuela would be 16 cents, that's kind of crazy!

Have you ever thought how accurate is the measurement done when you fill up your car? What about the temperature influence in the volume of gasoline.

In the United States, the National Institute of Standards and Technology states that the accuracy of the flow meters installed in fuel dispenser needs to be around 0.3% and temperature gradients of 30 degrees Celcius affect its volume up to 3%.

Ok, so but what if I don't use a car to go to work, But I use something like this! The OOCL Hong Kong, the largest container ship in the world.

This little boat consumes around 21,200 gallons per day or the equivalent of 1300 cars.

How do you pump fuel into this huge ship? Is there a fuel dispenser in the middle of the ocean?

To answer this we have to go to Singapore one o the biggest bunkering ports in the world.

In the past dipping sticks were used to measure the level of fuel tanks and by mass was indirectly calculated using density and temperature compensation.

Now with mass flow meters, you have a device that can measure directly the transferred fuel mass, additionally, Coriolis mass flow meters are able to measure temperature and density of the fluid.

If you want to learn more on how does Coriolis flowmeters work check out this video.

So what are the benefits of bunker fuel metering systems?

The accuracy of bunkering systems can be up to on 0.05% and with this system save up to 3 hours for each transfer operation.summing up to 2000 euros in savings.

Bunkering systems are completed with control cabinets that register all the transferring transactions. These cabinets comply local and international laws making the bunkering process trustworthy and transparent.

This is an example how precise instrumentation allows an operation as fuel be more transfer efficient and convenient!

Go and check the last thing you bought and leave in the comment section below where did it come from! And think how many kilometers it had to travel to get to you and about the crucial role instrumentation!

Thank you for watching See you next week!

  • Tug Boats in Action - How Large Ships enter Dublin Port!

    2:22

Have you ever wondered how some of the larger ships enter Dublin Port?

“Primarily, ships that enter the port, particularly the bigger vessels, they’re very restricted in their ability to manoeuvre within the confines of the port.” The tugboats play a very important role in bringing in these larger ships. It is no small feat, but is achieved with much smaller boats and a whole team effort. Meet Paul Dorgan, Tug Master, and watch as he provides a unique insight into tug boat operations at Dublin Port!

A tugboat (tug) is a boat that manoeuvres vessels by pushing or towing them. Tugs move vessels that either should not move themselves, such as ships in a crowded harbour or a narrow canal, or those that cannot move by themselves, such as barges, disabled ships, log rafts, or oil platforms. Tugboats are powerful for their size and strongly built, and some are ocean-going. Some tugboats serve as icebreakers or salvage boats. Early tugboats had steam engines, but today most have diesel engines. Many tugboats have firefighting monitors, allowing them to assist in firefighting, especially in harbours.

Tug Boats Beaufort and Shackleton form a very important part of Dublin Port’s fleet. Beaufort & Shackleton were built in 2010 (the year this ad was released by the Irish National Lottery: and each of their gross tonnage is 284.

Star Citizen is an Open Development Alpha Project by Cloud Imperium. It is 2 Games really though, the Persistent Universe that aims to build a First Person MMO Space Sim that encompasses gameplay in ship & on ground, economy and pretty much anything else you can think of. It's built in the StarEngine (a modified Lumberyard Engine). You'll see massive Space Ships that you can fly with friends, land on planets, explore or whatever your way to whatever goal you choose. It's available to try in it's current Alpha State now, you can give feedback & influence the direction of the game BUT it is VERY ALPHA.
Squadron 42 is the Single Player Campaign of Star Citizen & the Spiritual Successor of Wing Commander. The Idea is the game is immersive, cinematic, beautiful & seamless... NO LOADING SCREENS once in game.
Both Games are currently in the Alpha of their development with the hope that SQ42 Episode 1 will have a Feature Complete Beta by Q3 2020.
I am suspecting to see something more like a Star Citizen PU Beta by the end of 2022 with permanent progression, though it could be a while after that before the game is considered feature complete.

    Disclosure:
I am an independent Content Creator & Star Citizen Fan. I am not paid by CIG/RSI in anyway.

  • Sounding the Sumburgh Foghorn

    2:23

The Sumburgh foghorn was used as part of the foghorn sound for Robert Eggers The Lighthouse. Read more here -

A foghorn or fog signal is a device that uses sound to warn vehicles of navigational hazards like rocky coastlines, or boats of the presence of other vessels, in foggy conditions.

Out of use since 1987, the foghorn was painstakingly restored by Brian Johnson. Shown in the video is the annual Foghorn sounding at Sumburgh Lighthouse, Shetland, Scotland.
Brian starts up the 1951Kelvin K-Series Diesel 44hp Engines. The engines power the Alley and MacLellan compressors, which in turn, power the foghorn.

Just so's you know, the horn was originally much louder at the end, but YouTube's audio algorithm turned the volume down. I tried several versions but it wasn't having it.

    Chief MAKOi Seaman VLOG 032

All Work and No Play : No Shore Leave at Paldiski

Our vessel arrived at our second loading port: Paldiski, Estonia. We only had three days of port stay. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go ashore due to a lot of maintenance jobs. Plus there's nowhere nearby to go. The only place worth visiting was Talinn City but to get there, I would have had to walk about 2 km to the train station and ride the train for 1.5 hours. That's just too far for so little time so I decided just to stay onboard and chill.
