  • Stop Doing It Wrong: How to Kill Your CPU Cooler

    26:16

A lot of PC builds online (including manufacturer photos & NR200P builds) incorrectly mount AIO liquid coolers, leading to pump noise/whine and early cooler failure.

Learn how liquid coolers are made in our factory tour:
Watch our most recent CPU cooler review video for updated thermal data on the best CPU coolers for PC builds:

We've wanted to do this video idea for a long time now, but finally got around to it after seeing an increase in manufacturers incorrectly picturing liquid coolers installed in their cases. Bitfenix and Cooler Master have both shown installation procedures that can actually kill the cooler, while pretty much everyone else has shown some form of sub-optimal installation that will minimally hurt the acoustic performance of coolers. In instances of mini-ITX cases like the Cooler Master NR200P, we've noticed a lot of build photos on forums online (and in YouTube media, but we don't blame the YTers or builders for overlooking this) installing coolers bottom-mounted. This, we think, isn't an issue with the reviewers or the PC building enthusiasts, but with the educational materials provided with the cases. The fact that there is an explicitly mentioned bottom-mount for radiators in a case where it's very likely to be used is a problem, and any case with such a mount should include warnings against installing closed-loop liquid coolers with block-mounted pumps in these positions. Installing a custom loop bypasses this issue, since the pump is almost never going to be in the block, and therefore should never be at the top of the loop (it's more likely to be in the middle of the loop). But AIO CPU coolers should not ever be bottom-mounted with the pump at the top of the loop. Manufacturer websites (shown in this video) also commonly show front-mounted radiators with tubes at the top, which will become noisy as permeation increases, and sometimes can be noisy immediately. This video is a PSA to try and help reduce pump whine, pump noise, and prevent liquid coolers from dying early or overheating.

  • Front vs. Top AIO Liquid CPU Cooler Install - feat. Deepcool Castle 280EX and be quiet 500DX

    16:09

In this video, I'll show you how to install the Deepcool Castle 280EX AIO liquid CPU cooler either in the front or the top of the be quiet! Pure Base 500DX mid-tower chassis, using the AMD AM4 platform. Then I'll run the benchmarks to show you which setup you should actually choose. I'm going to bust some myths about the best way to mount, and in fact to test, an AIO liquid CPU cooler. Yup, everyone else is wrong, especially with regard to delta from ambient results so many reviewers have been fooling you with! Want to understand the physics? Here you go:

    Newton's Law of Cooling: T(t) = Ts +(T0 - Ts)e^-kt
    See a demo:

The further the initial temperature is from ambient, the faster a cooler will work and the more effective it becomes. The cooling rate asymptotically approaches zero as the temperature of the object approaches ambient. No matter how many coolers you have to test, or how many years of data you want to represent on the same graph, there's no excuse for blatantly ignoring the laws of physics.

Here's the gear I used in this test:

The EK AIO has a massive motor, but is also running significantly more surface area for its microfins in the coldplate than immediate competitors (like the Arctic Liquid Freezer II or NZXT Kraken series). The internals start to paint a better picture as to why EK had the leading performance it had for its CLC, although still has Arctic to tee-off against once we get the 360mm variant of the LFII in.

Some of the new questions were great! Really cool to see so many people interested in this topic, and even cooler to hear from so many of you about how our first video helped you reduce pump and radiator noise with your closed loops. That's what we were really after, alongside increasing longevity when mounted with the pump in the wrong location.

We're trying to answer a round of new questions that weren't answered in the original video, like those regarding cavitation and if it matters where the pumps attach to the block, but also attempting to re-emphasize and state again several key points. The video went a bit too mainstream, and with the viewer retention numbers we see, it's unlikely most the people posting TLDRs really fully understood what they were posting. Thus, to make sure everyone is back on earth regarding the severity of the two primary sub-optimal or incorrect radiator orientations, we're re-addressing some points in the video. Hitting a mainstream audience often has a downside of diluting of the message, so we're here to just answer a few lingering questions from the audience. Hope this helps!

Make sure you subscribe to my channel - I interact with my audience and will answer all your questions ( if they are within reason!) Big thanks to all of you who have subbed and stay safe out there in these crazy times! I hope you can gather some sort of insight from this video.

How many fans do you need on your AIO w/ a high end CPU to get great cooling? In this video we look at the amount of fans you need before you see diminishing returns on cooling. Which will do better?

    1:47

Closed loop CPU liquid coolers are often the most efficient way to manage thermals and noise in your PC. During shipping and handling, air bubbles can get trapped in a cooler, causing some pump noise which should naturally disappear over time. In this video, we’ve put together some helpful methods to move the process along more quickly.

In this day and age, we very rarely see a bad product being brought to the market. Most brands have been around for so long, that they know what works, and know what doesn't. Today sadly isn't one of those days. Gigabyte AORUS have decided to dip their toes into the AIO realm of cooling, and frankly, we really wish they hadn't because Gigabyte screwed up....BADLY! Today James takes a look at the latest cooler from be quiet! - the new Pure Loop 360 which ships with 100ml of coolant with be quiet! advising the user to refill it every 2 years for maximum performance. Our Wireframe Desk-Sized Mouse Mats are on back-order and will be shipping soon!

Our review of the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X CPU is already live, and now we're moving on to the 12C/24T AMD R9 5900X. This follows the AMD R9 3900X launch and somewhat displaces the 3950X, despite the latter having a 4-core/8-thread advantage. The AMD R9 5900X most directly competes with Intel's i9-10900K in price, or AMD's own previous R9 3900X. The 5950X is mostly reserved or sensible for workstation PC builds, while the 5900X splits the middle between a true workstation-class CPU and a high-end gaming-class CPU. Today, we'll be testing gaming performance, overclocking performance, showing the best CPUs for gaming in 2020 (so far, again), the best workstation CPUs for Photoshop, 3D art, compression, and more, and testing power consumption. Our AMD R5 5600X review and benchmarks are coming soon, as are our AMD R7 5800X review and benchmarks.

  • An Air Cooling SURPRISE - Cooler Master MA620M CPU Air Cooler Review

    12:37

The Cooler Master Master Air MA620M might be the most overlooked CPU heatsink we've seen so far. It might not be as popular as the Noctua NH-U12S or U14S or be quiet Dark Rock series but the focus on being the quietest air CPU cooler makes for some pretty unique temperature testing. The MA620M heatsink is based on the amazing Wraith Ripper design but there are a lot of other things that might make it one of the best CPU air coolers of 2020.

  • Why silent computing and AIO watercooling dont seem to go together.

    4:41

    Gamers Nexus thorough test:
My gut feeling that the pump will be the noisiest component in a ultra quiet computer seems to be right. I spent 130 euro to find this out, so the 4 other hardcore silent computing people out there who happen to be curious about this don't have to.

  • Corsair 4000D Airflow Case Review vs. Solid Panel: Thermals, Noise, & Quality

    26:59

Corsair sent us the 4000D, 4000D Airflow, and 4000X for review. This review looks at the Corsair 4000D and 4000D Airflow thermals, case build quality, noise, and more vs. other PC cases.

    Review article:

The sub-$100 case market is starting to populate with quality airflow-oriented cases (after years of us pushing), and the Corsair 4000D Airflow is another to join those ranks. It'll be competing most directly with the Lian Li Lancool 215, Cooler Master TD500, Phanteks P400A, be quiet! Pure Base 500DX, and similar airflow cases. The new Corsair 4000D non-Airflow is also in for review, but unsurprisingly, it's not much of a performer. The 4000X is in for review at another time, assuming there's interest, but we're starting with both the 4000D and 4000D Airflow in this one. Some of the best cases for gaming PC builds right now are in this price class, so it's a good time for the case market.
