  • Waterotor: A New Renewable Energy Source


    Waterotor: A New Renewable Energy Source

    Waterrotor is a rotating turbine device that is installed in slow-moving water to harness moving water power to generate electricity. Though, it can operate in water speeds as low as two miles an hour, the “sweet spot” is the water speed of around four miles per hour.

    Waterotor Energy Solutions, created this product, keeping accessible and affordable electricity in mind. Globally, around 1.3 billion people are affected with this issue, as on date. Even those, who have electricity, depend on expensive, polluting fossil fuel generators for their power.
    Fortunately, over 71 percent of earth’s surface, is covered in slow-moving water and, waterrotor is ideal for these. The Waterotor uses a rolling drum-like system, to generate power, by capturing the push of water. Mechanical energy from the rotating drum, is converted into electrical energy, through onboard generators. It can be placed virtually anywhere, that has a water speed of greater than two miles per hour. It is submerged within ocean currents, rivers and canals.
    The Waterotor design achieves maximum torque, resulting in a high coefficient of power. This design works better than propeller or wing-like blades, which require higher water speeds, in order to match the same coefficient of power.
    In May 2016, Waterotor Energy Solutions revealed plans to manufacture Waterotors in Indonesia. If this plan succeeds, it will supply electricity to fishing villages, on the more than 17,000 Indonesian islands. Another interested nation is the Philippines. A government group in the Philippines is venturing to build up to 2,000 Waterotors, to bring the technology to the Philippines. Waterotor Energy Solutions also has agreements with the Federated States of Micronesia and, many other Pacific Ocean jurisdictions.

    The main advantages of the Waterotor is its ability to use slow-moving water. The abundance of slow-moving water, makes locations for the product seemingly endless. As it is a mobile device, it does not require bottom fixtures or foundations. It only need a simple anchoring. It can be designed as buoyant secured by anchors or, designed to be heavier than water, so that it can be lowered from a bridge, barge, boat or buoy. It has structural integrity and, a very high coefficient of power in output versus size.

    The Waterotor is environmentally friendly, because it has no high-spinning blades and, it doesn’t not disrupt the fish. Last, but not the least, it is cost effective, simple to build, and is a fully scalar device. The invention has the potential, to provide a green solution, by using the renewable resource of flowing water.

  • World Environment Day: Africa Sustainable Energy


    n Africa, UNDP, as an implementing partner of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is getting people in remote areas onto the electrical grid by harnessing green sources of energy like hydropower and solar energy. In the Embu district of central Kenya, a high rate of rainfall combined with a large amount of runoff water from the snows of Mount Kenya made hydropower the obvious choice. Through GEFs Small Grants Programme, which is managed by UNDP, the community there has established a hydro-powered turbine. Today it provides power to hundreds of people with the potential to reach thousands more.

    Namibia, meanwhile, is unable to receive all the energy it needs from its coal and hydropower plants to feed its rapidly growing tourism, fishing and mining industries. A UNDP/GEF initiative there is working with the Ministry of Mining and Energy to provide financing for people so they can install solar energy systems in both private homes and public buildings like schools and health clinics.

    In both initiatives, the introduction of alternative sources of energy has cut down on the collection and use of biomass fuels, which cause an estimated 1.4 million people around the world to die from respiratory disease every year. The collection of firewood also leads to the destruction of vital forest lands.

    In Embu, for example, people are collecting and burning firewood less and less. Instead, they are relying on the hydropower turbines output for all of their electricity needs, from simple things like cooking, television and house lights to the powering up of small businesses like a mobile phone charging shop.

  • Storing energy in concrete blocks


    A concrete “battery” could be the future of energy storage. Energy Vault, a Swiss startup, has created a way to store electricity in concrete blocks. The technology helps use solar power when sun doesn't shine and wind power when the wind doesn't blow. It's a low-tech alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

    There’s been a lot of progress in renewable energy with solar and wind power, but renewable energy storage remains a challenge. Energy Vault’s idea is similar to hydroelectric power, but instead of using water and dams, it uses concrete blocks and cranes. The low-cost, low-tech solution is proof that some of the answers to our energy-storage problems may be hiding in plain sight.

  • Innovating for the clean energy economy


    Which clean energy solutions are effective, and which need more work? Through explorations of household, city, and regional clean energy innovations and implementation efforts, Professor Daniel Kammen both analyzes successful innovation processes and identifies the areas that need urgent action and targeted programs. A mixture of analytic and empirical studies are used to explore what steps have worked and where dramatic new approaches are needed.

    Daniel Kammen is a professor of energy at the University of California, Berkeley, with parallel appointments in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory and former director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center. His research focuses on energy supply; transmission; the smart grid and low-carbon energy systems; the life-cycle impacts of transportation options; and energy for community development in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He has published extensively on these topics and testified numerous times in U.S. state and federal congressional briefings. In 2010, Kammen was appointed the first energy fellow of the Environment and Climate Partnership for the Americas; he has also served the state of California and the U.S. federal government in several other expert and advisory capacities.

    The Mortlake South Wind Farm project in Victoria will generate substantial additional economic focus in the Moyne Shire, independent of, but complimentary to ongoing dairying, grazing, cropping, tourism and associated service activities. During construction, the wind farm will generate 80-100 jobs and provide 10 ongoing jobs in the operations and maintenance team. This also provides a substantial increase in Moyne shire’s rates base. ACCIONA has partnered with Connect Jobs to assist us in attracting local people to work on the project. On this occasion we had 92 – 93% of local people on the project as well as boosting the economy and jobs through local businesses benefiting from the increased traffic in the area. In addition to the local jobs and benefits, we are shaping a sustainable future and providing clean energy equivalent to the consumption of around 115,000 homes annually.

  • Forming an sustainable energy brick for traditional coal fired power plants


    Technology developed at the University of Newcastle uses renewable energy to create bricks that can be used to power coal-fired power plants with zero emissions.

    The novel material, called miscibility gap alloy (MGA), stores energy in the form of heat. MGA is housed in small blocks of blended metals, which receive energy generated by renewables such as solar and wind.
