    The PAC JF-17 Thunder, or CAC FC-1 Xiaolong, is a lightweight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China. It was designed to replace the A-5C, F-7P/PG, Mirage III, and Mirage V combat aircraft in the Pakistan Air Force. The JF-17 can be used for multiple roles, including interception, ground attack, anti-ship, and aerial reconnaissance.

    How is the Tejas MK1 in comparison to the FA-50?
    Well Tejas MK1 and MK1A are still in progress and IAF has already issued RFP process to induct 83 more units of Tejas MK1A standards. Now coming back to your question. I guess here you are talking about FA - 50 Light Combat Aircraft. The FA-50 is a new light combat aircraft manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). It is a light combat version of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft.

    South Korea being a US ally since long do have American support when it comes to TOT (Transfer of Tech) on RADARS, ENGINE and stealth. I believe the RCS of KAI LCA would be better than HAL LCA comparatively and no doubt when it comes to RADAR and ENGINE KAI LCA will always have an upper hand.

    ► JF-17 Thunder (Pakistan):

    JF-17 Thunder is a single-engine, lightweight, multipurpose combat aircraft that was developed jointly by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC) of China and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) of Pakistan.

    The medium-sized aircraft is built mainly to meet the needs of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and will replace its current aging fleet of Nanchang A-5, Chengdu F-7P / PG, and Dassault Mirage III / V fighter aircraft.

    JF-17’s maiden flight was completed in August 2003 and entered service in March 2007. The aircraft is designated as Joint Fighter-17 (JF-17 by Pakistan and as Fighter China-1 (FC-1) by China. The JF-17 / FC-1 is expected to cost $15m-20m.

    The No.26 Squadron Black Spiders is the first JF-17 Squadron of the PAF, introduced in February 2010. It has been launched with 14 JF-17 aircraft.

    JF-17 was showcased at the Farnborough Air Show 2010. Two aircraft of the No.26 Black Spiders Squadron were also displayed at the show.


    ► HAL Tejas (India)

    The HAL Tejas is an Indian single-engine, fourth-generation, multirole light fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with the Aircraft Research and Design Centre (ARDC) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program, which began in the 1980s to replace India's aging MiG-21 fighters. In 2003, the LCA was officially named Tejas.

    Tejas has a tail-less compound delta-wing configuration with a single vertical stabilizer. This provides better high-alpha performance characteristics than conventional wing designs. Its wing root leading edge has a sweep of 50 degrees, the outer wing leading edge has a sweep of 62.5 degrees, and the trailing edge has a forward sweep of four degrees. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, and composite material structures. It is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary supersonic combat aircraft.

    The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by HAL after the HAL HF-24 Marut. Production of the Tejas Mark 1 for the Indian Air Force (IAF) began in 2016. The IAF plans to procure 324 aircraft in all three variants - MK1, MK1A, and MK2. The first Tejas IAF unit, No. 45 Squadron IAF Flying Daggers was formed on 1 July 2016 with two aircraft. As of 2016 indigenous content in the Tejas was 59.7% by value and 75.5% by a number of line replaceable units.

    Back in the 1980s, when Indian Air Force put forward its ‘Long Term Re-Equipment Plan 1981’, a big revelation came that almost all of the Mig-21 in Indian Service will be reaching the end of their service life which by estimation was almost 40% of the Combat Strength of Indian Air Force by 1995. Henceforth, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Programme was launched to replace the Mig-21 in Indian Service and develop an aviation ecosystem in India. With the first prototype of LCA named as “Tejas” by former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2001 with the Final Operational Clearance being received in 2019, the LCA Programme has come to a full cycle even when the Mig-21 has persisted in Indian Service albeit with all the upgrades. Here I will discuss how the Tejas is better than the Mig-21 and can it replace the venerable Mig-21 in Indian Service.

    In a major decision aimed at boosting the domestic aerospace industry, India on Wednesday approved a much-awaited deal worth Rs 48,000 crore to procure 83 indigenously-developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas for the Indian Air Force.

    The procurement of 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircrafts and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircrafts at the cost of Rs. 45,696 crore along with Design and Development of Infrastructure sanctions worth Rs.1,202 crore has been approved by the Cabinet under the PM Modi.

    The decision to procure the fleet was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by PM Modi.

    Air Chief RKS Bhadauria on Thursday said the 83 indigenous fighter jets to be inducted into the force would also be equipped with homegrown weapons such as the Astra beyond visual range air to air missiles and other standoff weapons, news agency ANI reported.

    “Indian aircraft Tejas is far better and advanced than the Chinese and Pakistan joint venture JF-17 fighter,” Bhadauria said when asked to compare the Indian fighter with the JF-17.
    On whether the Tejas would be able to carry out Balakot-type airstrikes, the Air Chief said, “In terms of strike capability, it will have the capability of a standoff weapon which will be even beyond the capability we used that time.”

    Air Chief Bhadauria said that the deal — the largest indigenous defence procurement deal — is a huge step for IAF capability building, adding that the current strength of the two squadron plan of LCA will now increase to six.

    The LCA and the J-10 are dawn of the aerospace industry of the two countries, China and India. Some people claim that the Chinese J-10 is better and some claim that the Indian LCA is better. This is an analysis of their capabilities from a technical point of view. Aircraft technical characteristics, its flight performance and tactical capabilities are primarily determined by a design concept which develops from specified aircraft roles, tasks and mission environment.

    One can see the similarity between the LCA and the J-10 here. The LCA evolved out of a requirement to replace India's large fleet of MiG-21 and MiG-27. It is a light fighter that primary mission is Air Defense with information delivered from ground based command and control centers. It also features the ability for Close Air Support and Air Interdiction, which was mission that the MiG-27 performed.The J-10 evolved out of the Lavi fighter of Israel.

    Israel needed a light fighter to replace its F-4 and Mirage III/V fleets (contemporaries of the MiG-21). This airplane's primary requirement was that of Air Interdiction and CAS. However, China's requirement was somewhat more akin to that of India's. It had to replace its enormous fleets of J-7s and Q-5s. Hence, it would require an emphasis on Air Defense as well as Strike. Both the LCA and the J-10 were designed as theater aircraft, meaning that they are of the same class.

    The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is in the lookout for procurement of LCF (Light Combat Fighter) with an option of 1 or 2 squadrons Between 18 to 24 LCF which will supplement F/A-18C/D Hornet and Su-30MKM Top Tier fighter jets which are already in the service with the air force.     The HAL Tejas is an Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multi-role light fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force and Navy. The aircraft has a tail-less compound delta-wing configuration, which gives it high maneuverability. It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s to replace India's ageing MiG-21 fighters. LCA was officially named Tejas in 2003, meaning Radiant in Sanskrit by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
    Tejas has a pure double delta wing configuration (wing root leading edge sweep 50°, outer wing leading edge sweep 62.5° and trailing edge forward sweep 4°), with no tailplanes or canard, and a single dorsal fin. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, composite material structures, and a flat rated engine. It is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary supersonic combat aircraft.
    The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after the HAL HF-24 Marut. As of 2016 the Tejas MK1 was in production for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the naval version was undergoing flight tests for Indian Navy (IN). The projected requirement for IAF is 200 single-seat fighters and 20 twin-seat trainers, while the IN expects to operate 40 single-seat fighters. The first Tejas IAF unit, No. 45 Squadron IAF Flying Daggers was formed on 1 July 2016 with two aircraft. Initially being stationed at Bangalore, the first squadron will be placed at its home base at Sulur, Tamil Nadu.

    The PAC JF-17 Thunder (Urdu: جے ایف-١٧ گرج‎), or CAC FC-1 Xiaolong (Fierce Dragon; Chinese: 枭龙; pinyin: Xiāo Lóng), is a lightweight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China. The JF-17 can be used for aerial reconnaissance, ground attack and aircraft interception. Its designation JF-17 by Pakistan is short for Joint Fighter-17, while the designation and name FC-1 Xiaolong by China means Fighter China-1 Fierce Dragon.
    The JF-17 can deploy diverse ordnance, including air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, and a 23 mm GSh-23-2 twin-barrel autocannon. Powered by a Guizhou WS-13 or Klimov RD-93 afterburning turbofan it has a top speed of Mach 1.6. The JF-17 is to become the backbone of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), complementing the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon whose performance it roughly matches, at half the cost. The PAF inducted its first JF-17 squadron in February 2010 and as of December 2015, 49 JF-17 Thunder Aircraft were in service with 50 additional airframes ordered, of which 17 have been delivered.

    Does Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder have a better prospect of sales over Indian LCA Tejas? After its failure to procure the South Korean F/A-50 fighter jets, the Argentine Air Force is considering buying the Pakistani JF-17 Thunder. While the aircraft has already secured export orders from Nigeria and Myanmar, India’s LCA Tejas has miles to go on that front.

    Meanwhile, new reports are emerging that the country is now shifting its interest to other cheaper alternatives, like the Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Thunder.

    Brigadier Xavier Isaac, the Argentine Air Force chief, reportedly confirmed these speculations in an interview given to Pucara Defense. He mentioned that the country would reconsider the JF-17, especially for the new Block-III variant.

    This also marks a significant development for the fighter, which is co-produced by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation of China.

    It has appeared as an effective, low-cost, single-engine fighter option for developing countries in the global market – much like the T-50 and IAI Kfir. Its block-III version is in the final stages of development and features an AESA radar.

    Compared to its arch-rival HAL Tejas Mk-1A made by India, the Pakistani aircraft has been successful in getting multiple global customers. Also being a low-cost and advanced multirole fighter jet, the new in-development Tejas Mk-1A variant, has, however, attracted the attention of countries like Malaysia and the UAE.

    Countries choosing the JF-17 over Tejas is mainly attributed to the low rate of production by HAL, which is about half of their Pakistani counterparts.

    Pakistan’s JF-17 Fighter:

    Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, a senior fellow at the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, New Delhi, said there were many reasons why foreign countries were preferring JF-17s to India’s Tejas.

    According to him, there are 10 main reasons why Tejas failed to impress even the Indian Air Force in its combat performance.

    (1) Tejas has a very small set of weapons integrated with it, mostly Indian and some Western. So, on one hand, you force countries to buy Indian weapons that don’t work for them – or if you get western, they’ll ask, what’s the benefit of buying Indian?

    (2) With Pakistan – the JF17 essentially slots into the Chinese supply chain – which has a HUGE variety of proven and demonstrable weapons. So, people buying the JF-17 already have Chinese weapons to mate or are comfortable with buying Chinese weapons that anyway have a proven track record. In fact, countries with bad human rights records would prefer the Chinese as they don’t impose sanctions.

    (3) China has a Security Council Veto and any country buying weapons from China can have significant influence over any Security Council decisions (same with US or French or Russian weapon sales). India has no such Veto.

    (4) The JF-17 is just a better-slotted plane – if you’re looking to replace MiG 21-27 and Chinese J6 J7 type fighters or older American fighters like the F4 F5 & F104 or upgrade from armed trainers, then the JF-17 offers the right capability and the right price point.

    (5) Tejas is just a very confused aircraft – -it doesn’t fit any known market segment.

    (6) JF-17 is a modest fighter but whatever advancements it brings are solid and proven.

    (7) Tejas is a nightmare – nothing about it is proven – there’s been too much mixing and matching and it inspires zero purchaser confidence.

    (8) Finally, the question of re-export. JF-17 uses mostly Chinese but some Italian (avionics and radar) and Russian (engine) equipment – all of which are cleared for re-export to 3rd countries.

    (9) Tejas uses American engines, Israeli radar, and a mishmash of avionics from countries that will never authorize re-export.

    Shahid Raza, a defense expert from Pakistan, shared similar reasons for JF-17 dominating its Indian counterpart in international export potential. According to Raza,

In such an adverse condition, indigenization is going to be tough but not impossible, the development of LCA Tejas has proved this.

Its designation JF-17 by Pakistan is short for Joint Fighter-17, while the designation and name FC-1 Xiaolong by China means Fighter China-1 Fierce Dragon.

    LCA-AFMk2 in scale model has been seen with a fixed probe like seen in the FOC configuration of the Tejas Mk1 fleet, but in LCA-AFMk2 that will be limited to the initial 3 pre-production units that will take to air from 2023 and will be used extensively as flight test and developmental platforms, as HAL and Cobham will be jointly working on the development of retractable Actuated probe for the production version of the aircraft that is expected to roll out from 2028.
    Cobham will be in charge of full design, qualification, and certification of the probe that they will jointly develop with HAL that includes MA-2 nozzle providing an improved interface.
