Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare...

A disaster is looming. A fabulous city, rich in culture, and technological advances, is about to be destroyed. Buildings, people, an entire civilisation, swept away by an overwhelming natural disaster. The legend has entranced scientists and scholars for centuries.

In this episode Naked Science goes in search of the most enduring myth of all - The City of Atlantis - lost beneath the waves to a massive natural cataclysm some 11,000 years ago. We know very little of Atlantis, in fact were it not for the writings of the Greek philosopher Plato we might not have encountered it at all. Plato, recounting a story he heard as a child, described a huge metropolis, rich in fine art, architecture and culture. The city was destroyed in the space of a day and a night, sunk beneath the waves for eternity by a massive natural cataclysm. For thousands of years the tale remained an obscure yet tantalising fable until an American by the name of Ignatius Donnelly reignited the idea, bringing it to worldwide attention and sending archaeologists and trophy hunters alike across the globe in its wake.

    Subscribe to Naked Science -

The story of Atlantis is one of the greatest mysteries ever told. It is a tale of a powerful civilisation destroyed by the gods more than 11,000 years ago. For centuries explorers have travelled the world in search of this lost city, but have found little. Did Atlantis really exist, or is it the work of one man’s vivid imagination?

The search for Atlantis has been the inspiration behind some of mankind’s greatest achievements. It is the story of a great and powerful empire that became depraved and was sunk to the bottom of the sea by Zeus, the god of gods. Man has scoured the Earth in search for Atlantis, yet we still have no exact location for this lost continent.

There are three islands that shed light on this mystery. The Greek island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea is a popular vacation spot unparalleled in its beauty, but with a violent past. Crete, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, whose history has contributed to the shaping of our world today. And Tenerife in the Atlantic Ocean, which many believe is the last remnant of the lost city.

“Lost City of Atlantis” is a documentary from the “World of Mysteries” series.

The earth has gone through countless changes in its history. Antarctica at one time was not covered with ice, and could have been home to ancient humans. As we develop new methods for uncovering the ice, we are beginning to see the possibilities that lay below. Mainstream ideology puts forward the Out of Africa theory, which tracks humans originating in Africa and spreading out by land across the world. However, genetic research is finding evidence that makes our story far more complex. One of these findings is the discovery of the Denisovan people of Siberia, which reveals an entirely new, intelligent human subspecies (first discovered in 2008). It is findings like this, that cause us to have to rewrite human history.

  • The Meteorite That Vanished | Fer de Dieu of Chinguetti | Spark

In 1916 Captain Gaston Ripert claimed to have discovered a huge iron meteorite, 40 metres high and 100 metres long, in the desert of North Africa. He said that the iron mass was located in sand dunes about 45 km to the south-east of the town of Chinguetti in Mauritania. He collected a 4 kg fragment lying close to the giant metal mass, which a number of years later ended up in Paris, where it was identified as a relatively rare type of stony-iron meteorite, known as a mesosiderite.

It was hailed as a great discovery, but a series of expeditions failed to trace the meteorite.

  • Why Bending is Better In Korra Than in The Last Airbender

    Airbender or Korra?
    Subscribe to CBR:

Well Avatar fans, it’s finally time for the entire franchise to be located in one convenient place for us to watch over and over again. That’s right, The Legend of Korra is dropping on Netflix and I couldn’t be more excited to have a reason to rewatch the legendary sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

If there was any denying it before, there’s certainly no denying it now that Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the greatest American animated series of all time! It is a property that seems to only get better with age and each subsequent rewatch. A lot of this has to do with the complex magic/martial arts system that it puts into place called bending. The original series utilizes this system extraordinarily well, but I’d say that its sequel series builds on these ideas and even improves upon many of them.

During Avatar: The Last Airbender, many skills and techniques were created and perfected. Arts like metalbending, energybending and the wickedly disturbing bloodblending were all revolutionized during this time in the Avatar universe. All of these skills are very much in play during Korra’s timeline.

The series also shows what kind of technological advances can come with new bending skills and unity amongst the world’s people. We get all sorts of cool new concepts like motorized vehicles, mecha suits and even a really cool sport!

So let’s not waste any time! Here are all the reasons why the bending in Korra is even stronger than in the original series!

  • Plato Crete Atlantis and Holy Mountain - Dr. M.Tsikritsis

All the time researchers, archaeologists and scientists deal with Atlántida, trying to investigate if it is a myth or a reality and if it was ever existed where was it.
This video presents an investigation about the time and place where Plato first learned about Atlantida. The evidence that is presented in this paper correlates the initiation of Plato into the myth of Atlántida with Crete.
In short, a possible scenario is that during Plato’s third travel in Sicily, he finished his introduction to Pythagorean theory as it is described in Timaio. For fulfilling the requirements of his initiation into Pythagorean theory, he came to Crete, in order to see the sanctuary of Zeus in the Holy mountain. In his tracing Pythagoras’ path to Zeus Sanctuary, Klinias, who was an important person of Knosian society and a descendant of the wise man Epimenides, walks together with Plato and describes to him the Atlantida as his father had described to him. Epimenides was the wise man who had initiated Pythagora into mysteries. It seems that a basic element to someone’s introduction to mysteries was his introduction Atlantida’s myth.

  • 58 Years Of Mars Exploration In 14 Minutes

    Hello, welcome to NeoScribe.
As far back as the 2nd millennium BC, Ancient astronomers identified 5 celestial objects moving differently than the backdrop of stars.
The Greeks called them “planetes” meaning wanderers and many ancient civilizations would go on to worship them as deities.
With its abundant iron oxide dispersed on its surface, giving it a reddish appearance, the Romans worshiped Mars as the God of War.
Over time, mystical worship shifted to fantastical speculation, of intelligent life on Mars.
In 1877, Italian Astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli observed a network of linear structures on the surface of Mars leading to a surge of speculation of the possibility of intelligent life on the Planet.
The idea of an Advanced Martian civilization was widely covered by newspapers and magazine along with many science fiction novels, capturing the imagination of the public, right up to the Space Age and the first missions to Mars.

Between October 1960 and November 1962, the Soviet Union launched 5 missions to Mars.
    Each one failed.
NASA continued the streak of misfortune in 1964, with the failure of Mariner 3.
Three weeks later, NASA launched the Mariner 4 spacecraft, becoming the first successful mission to Mars.
Mariner 4 was a flyby mission, and reached Mars on July 14th and 15th 1965, marking an incredible and historic moment.
Equipped with a Telescope, Mariner 4 took 22 close-up images of Mars.
These were the first images ever captured and returned to Earth from deep space.
Mariner 4 transmitted measurements of Mars’s atmosphere which turned out to be much thinner than expected.
Additionally, it did not detect a magnetic field, radiation belts or surface water.
These findings dashed hopes of discovering intelligent life on Mars.
Just two days after Mariner 4 was launched, the Soviet Union Launched the Zond 2 spacecraft but they lost communications with it, making it 6 failed Mars missions in a row for the country.
Then NASA went back to Mars with Mariner 6 & 7, launched in February and March 1969.
6 &7 were both sent on flyby missions and were both successful.
The spacecraft uncovered that the Mars atmosphere is comprised of mostly carbon dioxide.
They also were able to transmit 201 images back to Earth, covering around 20% of the surface.
The images did not reveal any of the canals mistakenly observed by late 19th century astronomers, another letdown for Intelligent Life hopefuls.
However, Mariner 6 & 7 detected trace amounts water on the surface of Mars, providing some hope to finding life on Mars.
Back to the Soviet Union, it launched The Mars 2M No. 522 in 1969 and the Kosmos 419 in 1971.
Both missions failed, extending their streak 9 unsuccessful mission.
And then FINALLY, in May 1971, the Soviet Union launched the twin space probes Mars 2 and 3.
The Probes were identical, each consisting of an orbiter and a lander.
Both orbiters were successful, transmitting a total of 60 images, discovering mountains as high 22 km and revealing surface temperatures between -110 and 13° C.
And the orbiters likely remain in Mars Orbit to this day…
The Mars 2 & 3 landers are the other hand did not fare so well.
The Mars 2 Lander’s descent system malfunctioned and the parachute did not deploy causing it to crash.
And then Mars 3 lander successfully landed, however communications failed after 14 seconds.
Meanwhile, back at NASA, they launched two orbiters, Mariner 8 & 9 also in May 1971.
Mariner 8 failed, but Mariner 9 was highly successful.
Despite launching 11 days after the Soviet’s Mars 2 & 3, Mariner 9 beat the others to Mars becoming the first spacecraft to orbit another planet.
When Mariner 9 arrived at Mars it found the surface completely covered by a planet-wide dust storm and scientist had to delay imaging for months until the storm settled.
Mariner 9 was able to transmit over 7,000 images, covering 85% of Mars' surface.
The images revealed river beds, vast canyon systems over 4,000 km long, along with massive extinct volcanoes including Olympus Mons, the largest known volcano in the Solar System.
    1973 was a busy year for the Soviet Union, which launched Mars 4, 5, 6 & 7.
All four missions failed for the most part, except Mars 5 manage to transmit 180 images before it was disabled likely from a micrometeoroid.
At this point, the Soviet Union had only 2 successful missions out of 18, and it wouldn’t attempt another mission to Mars for 15 years…

  • Traces of Lost Ancient High Technology in Greece

This is from a Swedish documentary made in 1992 called Drömmen om Atlantis (The dream of Atlantis).
The clip shows an interview with Constantinos Cissis (a.k.a. Konstantinos Zissis) who calls himself an amateur archaeologist. He was born and raised in Greece but later moved to Sweden. He has studied history, archeology, theology and parapsychology. In this clip he talks about his theory of high tech drills being used in pre-historic time in an ancient quarry near Mount Olympus in Greece where he was born.

Since I am a huge fan of the videos uploaded by Brien Foerster, Jan Peter de Jong, newearth ( and Лаборатория Альтернативной Истории at (even though I don't understand a single word in Russian) I thought it would be nice to share this clip with those of you who are interested in these kinds of ancient mysteries.

I think the tracks in the bedrock shown in this clip, bare a striking resemblance to the ones you can find in the quarry on the Giza Plateau. See for yourself here:

There are also similar tracks at Petra in Jordan. But neither the ones at the Pyramids or in Petra, turns in corners. The ones shown here are unique in that aspect.

I apologize for any linguistic errors in the subtitles. If you find any, please let me know so that I can correct them.

  • Mapungubwe - Secrets of a Sacred Hill | Timeline

Between the years 950 AD to 1290 AD, on the Northern border of South Africa, traversing the conference of the Shashi – Limpopo Valley, which today divides Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, existed an ancient African Kingdom, called Mapungubwe. From the Iron Age to present day this unique one-hour film explores the history and tells the story of this remarkable city.

Governed from an impenetrable hilltop, Mapungubwe became the business centre for all of Africa’s trade which, by this period, had become well integrated into the world economy and thrived on trade with the East Indian Trade Route attracting traders from as far afield as Persia, Arabia, India and China.

Mapungubwe was inhabited by successive groups of people for this 300 year period until it was mysteriously evacuated. No one knows for sure why, but in 1290 Mapungubwes’ inhabitants left taking with them the memories and stories of Mapungubwes' early history. In this film archaeologists and historians take us on a journey through a thousand years of untold African history revealing the controversial discovery of this ancient site and its golden artifacts.

  • Atlantis and Godzilla Kingdom Explained

The Atlantic Ocean is (for somewhat obvious reasons) depicted as the resting place of Atlantis, so it does seem reasonable that the city in King of the Monsters is the Monster Verse's take on Atlantis. A connection between Godzilla and an underwater civilization - whether it be Atlantis or a completely original kingdom - is particularly interesting because of what it could mean for Legendary's cinematic universe.

  • World Building | Edgar Grunewald | TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde

Edgar shows us what world building is and why it matters. Why it influences modern popular culture and why it ultimately helps us understand our own planet and our place within it.

Edgar Grunewald a.k.a ‘The World builder’ is a YouTuber, who considers worldbuilding to be an academic endeavour in its own right: a tool to focus and drive life-learning. He worldbuilds to understand more about our universe and his greatest joy in life is passing knowledge onto others.

Edgar Grunewald is an internet content creator based in Dublin.

In the spring of 2014, he set up the youtube channel, Artifexian. The aim of which channel is to be a valuable worldbuilding resource for creators of sci-fi/fantasy fiction. The Artifexian Podcast, launched in the following year and co-hosted by Bill McGrath, carries on these ideals but in a longer conversational format.

He considers worldbuilding to be an academic endeavour in its own right: a tool to focus and drive life-learning. He worldbuilds to understand more about our universe and his greatest joy in life is passing knowledge onto others.
The success of Artifexian in all its form brought him to the attention of his alma mater, The Royal Irish Academy of Music. In September 2016, he began working for the university creating educational music theory videos for them.

Outside of video creation, he enjoys recreational mathematics, watching Star Trek, and eating liquorice.
His favourite fictional character is Captain Jean-Luc Picard and favourite recording artist is Lauryn Hill and despite being on this planet for the best part of three decades, he has yet to devise an effective way to finish off a biog.
