This happened in the latter stages of the Early Muslim Expansion, as the Rashidun caliphs - Umar, Uthman and Ali were assassinated, which led to the war of succession, killing of Ali's son Husayn in Karbala, and the creation of the Umayyad dynasty under Muawiyah I.

Islam and Christianity are two of the world’s biggest religions. Their histories begin in exactly the same place, in the Garden with Adam and Eve. Also, Islam and Christianity along with Judaism are known as the Abrahamic faiths, meaning that they all believe that the biblical prophet Abraham was one of the original fathers of having these faiths delivered to humanity. However, there are several key differences between the two of them that I’ll be exploring in this episode.

BAKU - With about 1.6 billion adherents, Islam is the second largest religion on Earth. Yet, its followers represent less than one percent of the world’s scientists. Only a handful of people from Muslim-majority countries have won Nobel Prizes in science.

However, up until the Mongol siege of Baghdad in 1258, Islamic science was the most advanced in the world. In comparison with the past, the modern disparity is staggering. Thus, to understand the present-day lack of scientific accomplishments, we must explore the past. In this instalment of a new series, we will go over the rise and decline of Islamic attitudes towards science.

Along with Christianity, the Dark Ages saw the emergence of another religion — Islam. After emerging in the Near East, it spread across North Africa and into Europe in such a short time that there was originally no art. In more settled times, highly decorated mosques began to be built based on the prophet Mohammad's own home. Their architectural and scientific achievements, including the mapping of the stars, dwarfed anything existing in the western world.

Januszczak visits the Dome of the Rock, desert palaces forgotten by modern Islam with their more sensual artwork, the Mosque of Ibn Tulun where it was believed Noah's Ark landed, and the Mosque of Cordoba. He identifies the Nilometer used to measure the flood of the Nile and uses an astrolabe that Muslims used to find the direction of Mecca.

  • The Mysteries Of Islams Most Sacred Site | Absolute History

    1:25:09

The Sacred City presents compelling evidence that suggests the holy city of Mecca is in the wrong location and that the worlds 1.6 billion Muslims are praying in the direction of the wrong city. Compiling evidence from both historic sources and new technologies point to the correct location in this seismic, revelatory new film. In this startling and original documentary, writer and historian, Dan Gibson, shows that descriptions of Mohamed’s original holy city – as detailed in the Qur’an and Islamic histories, do not match that of the Mecca we know today. If true this could shake Islam to it’s roots, because every Muslim is required to pray towards the ‘forbidden gathering place’.

If Dan Gibson is right, Muslims are praying in the wrong direction. In the film ‘The Sacred City’ we set out his evidence from within Islamic and ancient histories – while also using modern technologies - to track down the biggest secret of the last fifteen hundred years. Gibson not only finds the location of the original Mecca but also provides a convincing argument as to how such a great misunderstanding in Islamic history came about.

While clearly controversial, The Sacred City is respectful of Islam’s prophet, and does not dispute the events of the Qur’an; but shows how a deliberate attempt was made to hide from Islam, secrets that impact every Muslim today. The evidence is compelling and fascinating. In a time when the world agenda is being set by Islam, it is more important than ever for the origins and history of this world religion to be examined afresh. This is an important documentary with world-wide appeal for both religious and secular audiences. Beautifully filmed in the ruins and deserts of the middle east, the film is a detective story that investigates the dawn of Islam and will become the most talked about film for years to come.

  • Arabia before Islam | The Birth of Islam Episode 01

    4:21

A hot arid desert, sandwiched between two great rivaling empires. This is Pre-Islamic Arabia.

Welcome to Al Muqaddimah. On this channel, I'll be making videos about Islamic History and other history as well but mostly Islamic. This is a new channel so please subscribe if you liked the video and want more like it, also the bell icon to get notifications but you know that already. Now, let me introduce myself. My name is Syawish A Rehman and I'm from Pakistan. I'm a Sunni Muslim, telling you this because well, you know, so that my faith is clear. On a spectrum with Religion on the Right and Atheism on the left, I'm somewhere left of the Center. I am not very practicing of my faith but as a history enthusiast, I really love Islamic History and Culture.

I realized that there aren't many videos that go much into detail about Islamic History online. Even Crash Course has like three videos in total on Islamic Civilization. Most Muslims even don't know Islamic History like What happened to the Abbasids? Who were the Seljuqs? Where did House of Wisdom go? All these questions will slowly be answered.

These videos aren't from a religious point of view, these will be from a very Liberal point of view. I'm a Muslim but I don't let my faith interfere with my work so if you're easily offended by learning the truth, I think you shouldn't watch these videos.

The additional facts in my video (the ones that appear on those scrolls and are too fast to read) will also be in the description so you can check them here .

    1) The word, Allah, is a deformed way of saying Al-Illah, which means THE God, with a capital G.

    2) Allah was considered the higher God and couldn’t be reached directly. You had to ask lower gods to forward your requests.

    3) On a mosaic in a Greek Orthodox monastery located in Saidnaya, Syria, Mary can be seen holding a tablet with Arabic written on it.

Don't forget to like, comment, share and subscribe.

Disclaimer: The maps and flags in the video are not 100% accurate. Some maps and flags are difficult to find and so, are estimations.

  • Islam and Politics: Crash Course World History 216

    13:28

In which John Green teaches you about how Islam has interacted with politics during it's history, and how it continues to do so today. Islamist movements are in the news a lot lately, but how did that happen. John will point out that Islam has alway been tied to political movements. Mohammed was not only a religious leader, he led an empire. So how did this lead to modern movements like ISIS? Islam has traditionally been a pretty egalitarian religion, and its scriptures value peace, so it is surprising in a lot of ways that such a violent fundamentalist movement would come out of it. What is a caliphate? What is a Caliph? John will teach you all about it. Take it easy in the comments, y'all. Be kind and respectful to each other.

  • Is Egypt failing to protect its Coptic Christians? | DW Documentary

    28:31

Egypt's government has been accused of failing to protect its minority of Coptic Christians, after a successful string of attacks by Muslim Egyptians.

For centuries, Christians and Muslims in Egypt have lived alongside each other. Discrimination did occur but generally this coexistence was peaceful. The Christian community today makes up just ten percent of the population. Since the 1980’s however, Christians belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church have increasingly been the target of violence and attacks by Muslim extremists. Guirguis Fawzy is typical of the Christian community in Egypt. Middle class, successful and well networked. Guirguis lives with his family in Suhag in the Nile Valley north of Luxor where he deals in wood. He has relatives in major cities such as Cairo and Alexandria. Like most Copts he considers himself first and foremost an Egyptian, his Christian faith playing only a secondary role in how he sees his own identity. But this relaxed view of his own place in Egyptian society is both rejected and challenged by militant Islamists.
Keen to exploit growing polarization since the 2013 military coup that removed the Muslim Brotherhood from power, Islamic critics of current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s strong-arm tactics have been quick to portray this as evidence of a pro-Christian agenda. It doesn’t take much these days to provoke communal violence. Worse still, a wave of terrorist shootings and bombings targeting Copts has shocked the community leading many to question whether the government is doing enough to protect them.

  • The hidden treasures of Timbuktu - Elizabeth Cox

    5:35

Dig into the ancient manuscripts, scrolls, and books of Timbuktu— and find out why they’ve been hidden for centuries.

    --

On the edge of the vast Sahara desert, citizens snuck out of the city of Timbuktu and took to the wilderness. They buried chests in the desert sand, hid them in caves, and sealed them in secret rooms. Inside these chests was a treasure more valuable than gold: the city’s ancient books. Why were they hiding these priceless manuscripts? Elizabeth Cox digs into the literary tradition of Timbuktu.

  • Richard Eaton – Islam in India

    1:8:23

Richard Eaton is Professor of History at the University of Arizona. His research interests focus on the social and cultural history of medieval and early modern India (1000-1800), and especially on the range of interactions between Islamic and Indian cultures that took place at that time. He is also active in the growing subfield of world history, as well as comparative history. He has published monographs on the social roles of Sufis (Muslim mystics) in the Indian sultanate of Bijapur (1300-1700), on the growth of Islam in Bengal (1204-1760), and on the social history of the Deccan from 1300 to 1761. Most recently, he co-authored a monograph entitled Power, Memory, Architecture: Contested Sites on India's Deccan Plateau, 1300-1600. These four historical monographs employ as analytical tools, respectively, Weberian social thought, Annales School methodology, biography, and architecture.
He is also the recipient of multiple book awards including the Albert Hourani Book Award for the best book in Middle Eastern Studies and the A. K. Coomaraswamy Book Award for the best book in South Asian Studies, as well as three film awards for his 2002 film on European contact with Asia entitled, “Through the Looking Glass.”

  • Islams Diverse History of Ideas

    1:10:21

Join us for a virtual discussion with Mustafa Akyol, who takes us on a fascinating journey into Islam's diverse history of ideas, and argues that the next Islamic Enlightenment may be on the horizon.

Akyol diagnoses “the crisis of Islam” in the modern world and offers a way forward. Diving deeply into Islamic theology, and also sharing lessons from his own life story, he says Muslims lost the universalism that made them a great civilization in their earlier centuries. He demonstrates how values often associated with the Western Enlightenment―freedom, reason, tolerance and an appreciation of science―had Islamic ancestors that were cast aside, for political reasons, in favor of more dogmatic views. Akyol borrows lost visions from medieval Muslim thinkers, such as Ibn Rushd (aka Averroes), to show how they shared a strikingly modern worldview on a range of sensitive issues: human rights, equality for women, freedom of religion, or freedom from religion.

While frankly acknowledging the problems in the world of Islam today, Akyol offers a clear and hopeful vision for its future.
