Swift and deadly, the Vikings dominated the seas of northern Europe from the late eighth century to the 11th. Their ships—technological feats used for exploration, trade, warfare, and even burials—were integral to the lives of the formidable raiders. Attacking in small groups at first, fleets in the later Viking age could number 250 ships or more.

In this history documentary we explore one of the most famous units of Viking History, the berserkers. We begin by describing the main traits of a Viking berserker. The first is their animalistic qualities. This is actually tied to the broad trend of animal-human hybrids which appear in civilizations across the world. The Berserkers appear to have emerged from the norse version of this tradition with their sagas being filled with many instances of norse gods, legendary figures, and mortals transforming into all kinds of animals. The berserkers were just a subset of this group.

One of the next qualities of a Berserker was their rage, known as the berserkergang. This involved the viking warrior devolving into a rage filled state which might see them begin to bite their teeth and howl. The norse saga tradition has many tales of how this berserker rage led to much bloodletting of friend and foe. This leads us to the next quality of the berserker, their rejection by the community. This is a result of the way their violence threatened cultural taboos of loyalty and honor.

With this established we then talk about the viking weapons and armor which would have been used by the berserkers. Berserker armor is usually described as consisting of nothing but a shield however we speculate that they likely wore better gear, especially if they served in a noble's retinue. We then talk about training, initiation rights, and battle tactics. Finally we conclude by looking at their service history in viking warfare across the years.

Stay tuned for more content on the vikings and check out our videos on Assassin's Creed Valhalla where we will be exploring the world of ancient Scandinavia. Also keep an eye out for the portrayal of Berserkers in For Honor and other games to see if you can spot where legend and reality begin.

The ferocious seafaring vikings were a feared Scandinavian invader from the late 700’s AD. Over three centuries their ships carried the ruthless warriors to nearby and distant lands, which included the British Isles and northern Europe. They ranged as far as Northern Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and present day Turkey and Canada. Doing battle as pirates, raiders and traders, the Viking voyagers formed settlements and governments in many parts of the world, establishing themselves and their descendents as rulers and nobility.

  • Amazing Viking Facts for Kids - Vikings History for Kids - Viking Facts for Kids - Vikings for Kids

    4:09

Facts about the vikings that kids should know about but in order not to make the information seem boring, the story being told to them should be exciting and this happens through the way it is presented to them.

There are some facts related to the life of the vikings which would sound interesting when the kids know about them but in order to succeed at such a thing, you as a parent should tell them the story in a different kind of way or else depend on any of the educational resources and videos that would let them listen to the story and be waiting for the rest of it.

In this video, Aaron is being the storyteller who is telling the facts of the vikings regarding their origins, what they used to wear, the swords they used, etc. One important thing to pay attention to when you are choosing the voice of the kid who will do the voice over for you which is to make him sound interesting while telling the story.

The vikings originally came from Sweden, Denmark and Norway and then they sailed with their ships to reach other parts of the world. They sailed through the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, they reached the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and they even reached North America.

The vikings had their specific clothes, the ships which they designed themselves and which differ in the design and the size ( The vikings wear specific clothes especially when they are preparing for a battle, it is about the cloak, the knife belt, the leather shoes and the helmet. You will always realize that the vikings treated their swords as part of their families, they always walked around with their axes, the knives and their shields.

When it comes to the long viking ship, there are some facts which the kids are supposed to be informed with. The long viking ships are huge, they measure 30 metres, they can travel 18 miles per hour, they can carry on up to 60 men and they can even sail in shallow waters so that they could travel up rivers. The vikings longships are built from the finest oak and they always have this dragon head that is situated at the front of the ship which is believed to scare any enemies away.

Since the vikings come from the Scandinavian part of the world, they used to have cooler temperatures and thus traveled to England to have a better land of farm.

Sharing some facts with the kids and informing them with some new information should come in the form of a story to make it easier for them to absorb it all. On our LearningMole channel, we have other educational videos and resources which you could let your kids watch and receive new information.

What is the biggest planet in our solar system? You could know more about that from this link ( What is the smallest planet in the solar system? ( Heart information for the kids ( bones information for the kids as well ( and you could find other educational videos related to science on our channel that your kids could enjoy watching as well.

The main goal behind LearningMole channel is to educate kids through using methods and tools that would keep them interested and motivated to know more ( To succeed in that goal, we have brought different videos for the kids that would inform them with facts related to the world they are living in, such as knowing about the history of the Egyptian pyramids but in a simplified way ( getting more informed about finance but in a small scale ( knowing about tornadoes and tsunami ( and even understanding what recycling is and why it is important (

There are lots of things for the kids to know about through our channel which is helping parents who are homeschooling their children.

Viking berserkers rush into a town and villagers scatter. Many are cut down with axes, spears, and arrows. From Lindisfarne to Seville, these lightning raids are unpredictable, brutal, and strategically aimed at vulnerable targets. For many coastal regions, Vikings raids bring an inevitable massacre. Today, we look at how best to survive a Viking raid.

Whether fighting for mere earthly plunder or glory in Valhalla, the #Vikings were situated in a Scandinavian society that offered unique conditions and motivations for raiding. We use as a case study the Viking attack on Moorish Spain and Portugal as an illustration of the drivers and vulnerabilities of Viking raiders. We lastly ask what happened to the Vikings? Were they mere assassins? Did the fearsome Norse raiders disappear in one final, Ragnarok-esque battle? And yes, we produced this history documentary in anticipation of the release of Assassin's Creed Valhalla!

  • What Drugs were like in the Viking Era

    9:44

Medieval Europeans believed in and feared many monsters. Basilisk, Demons, Dragons, also smart, independent women, who they misbranded as witches. But unlike these made-up monsters, there was one nightmare that was very real and could actually hurt them. A Viking Berserker!
These raging Norse warriors were known to enter raids and battles with bloodthirsty anger, with madness like a dog and the strength of a bear or bull. Their crazy tranced eyes, full of lust for blood were enough to make their enemies lose all hope long before the first strike.
However, their penchant for violence, gore, and killing wasn’t just something inherent. Their blood dance looked like a trance-like state because they were actually high!

Welcome to Nutty History and let’s talk about what drugs were used recreationally during the Age of Vikings.

  • Viking Origins | The Genetic History of Northern Europe

    30:39

In this episode we are joined by Geneticist Razib Khan who takes us through the Genetic DNA history of Northern Europe.

We begin in prehistoric Scandinavia as we see the arrivals of the first peoples from various places and we see various migrations some of which are coming from Southern Europe that eventually replace the original Hunter Gatherers. We talk about historiography and archaeology and how their views have changed on the subject of Northern Europeans and their origins.

We eventually leave the prehistoric culture after discussing the Battle Axe culture and the controversy surrounding them and we approach the Nordic Bronze and Iron Age period in Northern Europe and we discuss various migrations and cultures that migrate in, supplant and absorb these preexisting peoples and cultures.

What role did Anatolian migrations have in early Northern Europe? Who were the original hunter gatherers? What impact did the arrival of Indo Europeans have on the original inhabitants?

Eventually we approach the Medieval world and we talk about the medieval populations of Northern Europe and then the Vikings and whether or not these travels and ventures surrounding piracy have an impact on DNA in Northern Europe and in the places they settled such as Ireland, Scotland, England and etc.

  • Amazing Viking Turf House Tour - Stunning Green Building!

    4:04

Thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video :) You can visit to get 10% off your first purchase!

In this video, we're excited to share the re-created 1000-year-old Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. We visited the site last fall and had we really enjoyed learning more about the settlement, but also about the traditional construction techniques they used for the turf dwellings and workshops.

The turf houses are built with timber frames that are load-bearing, and walls that are built with peat bricks that have been cut and dried from a nearby bog. Each wall actually has two layers of the bricks, with a layer of gravel sandwiched in the middle to help drain any moisture before it infiltrates to the interior of the structure.

It's incredible that the Vikings were able to build such beautiful and functional structures with limited building materials, and in such a harsh environment.

Another thing that we found really neat that didn't have anything to do with the structures was the fact that the bog not only provided peat for building but bog iron they could use to create nails and other hardware they needed to repair their ships.

If you're interested, here's a link to our longer, more in-depth video about an Icelandic turf house:

In the year 1066, 7,000 Norman infantry and knights sailed in warships across the English Channel. Their target: England, home to more than a million people. Around the same period of time, other groups of Normans were setting forth all across Europe. Who were these warriors, and how did they leave their mark so far and wide? Mark Robinson shares a brief history of the Normans.

Delve into the Byzantine Army and discover the Varangian Guard! Claim your SPECIAL OFFER for MagellanTV here: Start your free trial TODAY so you can watch Vikings: Merchants and Explorers about the life of Medieval Scandinavians, and the rest of MagellanTV’s documentary collection:

In this animated history documentary we explore one the most famous units of history: the Varangian Guard. The video begins with a brief history on the Rise of the Byzantine Empire which followed the fall of Rome. We focus specifically on the dynamics of the eastern Roman Empire which interacted quite heavily with the lands of Scandinavia and the Kievan Rus by way of the river routes which linked the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea. The documentary discusses the history of the Byzantine conflicts with the Kievan Rus which gave rise to the eventual mercenary service of Varangians in the Byzantine army.

We then lay the ground work for this discussion by looking at the organization of the Byzantine Army and its mercenary corps known as the Hetairai. Starting around the end of the 9th century, the first warbands of Varangians would make their way into its ranks. However it would be in 989 AD when they came in full force, 6,000 Varangians sailing south to assist Emperor Basil II.

We discuss how future Varangians would make their way into Byzantine Service and the sorts of ways they would be used by the Emperors. This covers both civil and military service. Next we cover what the equipment of the Varangian Guard as well as the tactics of the Varangians in battle. Finally we conclude with a service history of the Varangian Guard over the Rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire. They fought many foes such as the Seljuks, the Bulgars, the Normans, the Pechenegs, and more. This includes key battles such as the Battle of Manzikert and the Siege of Constantinople during the 4th Crusade.

Viking ship is the name given to the ship types that were mainly used in Northern Europe during the Viking Age (800–1100). The Drakkar was still being built by the peoples of Northern Europe after the Viking Age. The Drakkar and its Viking occupation was mentioned in numerous chronicles of the invaded nation of the early Middle Ages, messengers of hell.

The first archaeological finds of the Viking ships were ship graves with grave goods for high-ranking people. The gifts were supposed to help the deceased on their journey to the afterlife.

  • Vikings: 7 INSANE Rules The Cast Had To Follow |⭐ OSSA

    9:48

There is no doubt that Vikings is one of the greatest series! Amazing setting, intriguing plot with great characters, and talented actors make us love this show and rewatch its seasons again and again.

However, we already know that there are always a lot of strict, and sometimes even crazy, rules that every crew and cast member has to follow in order to make such a great show, and the Vikings series is not an exception to this principle.

So today OSSA is going to spill some tea with you on shocking and strict rules that the Vikings cast have to follow. So by watching this video you are going to find out why John Kavanagh (The Seer) honestly deserves the title of the most patient actor, how Alexander Ludwig and Alex Høgh Andersen prepared for some scenes where their characters Bjorn and Ivar the Boneless have to do incredible stunts, why it was sometimes hard for Gustaf Skarsgard to motivate himself to wash his makeup of Floki away at the end of the day, why it can be considered that Clive Standen (Rollo) is lucky to have a thick beard by nature, how Torvi's age helped Georgia Hirst to fulfill his role, how Katherine Winnick's previous career helped her to play the role of Lagertha so amazingly that fans have literally fallen in love with her, after which scene Kieran O'Reilly (White Hair) could hardly stand on his feet, and why Travis Fimmel (Ragnar) is no longer afraid of snakes after filming Vikings.

So watch this OSSA’m video to find out every shocking and strict rule that the Vikings actors had to follow in order to make this series so fantastic!
