National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible.

One example is the annual “Round Up,” when the family joins with a group of wranglers to herd their horses to lower elevations for the winter. This exhaustive three-day ritual could be simplified with modern technology, but the practice endures as a testimony to their way of life. In this short film by Kristopher Rey-Talley, join the Kelsey family in Montana as they embark on their yearly trip with the horses through the land they cherish.

  • National Geographic Documentary - Horses - Amazing Story about this wonderful creature!

The horse (Equus ferus caballus)[2][3] is one of two extant subspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature, Eohippus, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse. There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.

Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited hot bloods with speed and endurance; cold bloods, such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and warmbloods, developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes, particularly in Europe. There are more than 300 breeds of horse in the world today, developed for many different uses.

Horses and humans interact in a wide variety of sport competitions and non-competitive recreational pursuits, as well as in working activities such as police work, agriculture, entertainment, and therapy. Horses were historically used in warfare, from which a wide variety of riding and driving techniques developed, using many different styles of equipment and methods of control. Many products are derived from horses, including meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. Humans provide domesticated horses with food, water and shelter, as well as attention from specialists such as veterinarians and farriers.

  • America’s Wild Horses Are Under Threat | NBC Left Field

A federal law protects tens of thousands of wild horses across millions of acres in America’s West. But with their numbers now skyrocketing, the Trump administration wants to make selling them for slaughter legal again, and the future of these icons of America’s West is hanging in the balance.

NBC Left Field is a new internationally-minded video troupe that makes short, creative documentaries and features specially designed for social media and set-top boxes. While pushing boundaries at home and abroad, NBC Left Field will also be serving as an experimental hub for NBC News style, treatment and audience engagement.

  • The Story of Americas Wild Horses and Burros

Released May 2012 - Produced by the Bureau of Land Management, this video helps us better understand how the BLM came to manage federally protected wild horses and burros on millions of acres of public lands across the West. Current and former BLM employees, historians, horse advocates, and others tell their parts of this continuing story.

    From the DVD Cover:
The public lands of the Western United States are diverse, ruggedly beautiful, and majestic - as are the horses and burros that live there. These animals are born with the colors of the land upon them. The browns, blacks, reds, blues, dapple grays, and snowy whites all reflect nature's paint brush.

Today, America's wild horses and burros are found in 10 western states. It is the BLM's responsibility to preserve and protect healthy herds of wild free-roaming horses and burros as components of the public lands.

The Wild Horse Annie Act of 1959 and the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 gave wild horses and burros a legal right to live on public lands without harassment. The Adopt-A-Horse or Burro Program was initiated in 1973 to meet the challenges of balancing the health of public lands with the health of the wild horses and burros.

  • Sea Horses Trailer - The Battle For Survival, NC Wild Horse

Sea Horses, is an ambitious undertaking that weaves together the incredible story of the wild horses that live upon the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. History, science, and the driving force that connects all life on Earth – the unwavering determination to survive –is set against a stunning visual feast of imagery in this film, that will not soon be forgotten. The film is slated to be finished by 2019 by Executive Producers Jared Lloyd and Doug Gardner.

The story behind the wild horses of the Outer Banks is one of epic proportions. Sand and salt, winds and tides have come together here along these ribbons of sand that we call barrier islands, to shape and mold one of the most unique horses on Earth. Their past is a shadowy one, punctuated by shipwrecks and lost colonies, all dating back to the age of exploration. Through hurricanes and nor’easters, tidal surges and drought, these horses have not so much survived as they have thrived in the face of the very worst of Poseidon’s wrath.

  • Horse of a Lifetime | 4 Years w/my Wild Mustang

On April 15th 2016 I picked up a wild untouched 2-year-old mustang for an mustang makeover competition. Within 3 days, I knew there was something special about this horse. Tag #9817, eventually named Lynx aka Wild Card. My third wild mustang.
Throughout those 4 years, we've been on so many adventures and have traveled cross-country multiple times together. Just us on the road. I don't know what I did to deserve such an amazing horse from a random draw. I didn't pick this horse, but he was the horse I needed. He's helped me through some really horrible times, but has also been the main factor in all of my good times as well. I have my team of my three heart horses.... it was only going to be two, my sweet PMU foal mares Calliope and Calypso. I didn't want a third, I was fine with my two, but I can't picture my life without this goofy mustang in it. I've gentled about 12-13 mustangs straight from the wild and loved them all but had to let them go so I could continue to gentle them. I just couldn't let Lynx go though. Okay, I'll stop rambling LOL. Here's some highlights of the past 4 years :) I don't have many videos from early on but I did find a few I didn't know I had. He was before I photographed/videoed everything.

Apollo's Rescue Story: Wild Horse Learns How to Trust Humans Again

  • Wild Horses ... Mustangs of Oregon

About the video: I wanted to do a whole year in review, but realized that would be a bit long, so creating segments of the year, and here are a few moments on the mustang ranges- video clips spliced together in August and September. On these trips, we got to continue to follow along the journeys of our longtime mustang friends we've been watching and learning about for nearly ten years. We also got to meet new faces and learn about them. Looking forward to seeing them all on their journeys this coming year, as well as meet new wild faces!
Now, as a disclaimer- I am a photographer and by no means do I claim to be a videographer. My videos are rough, and dont even use a tripod when I flip the video switch on. While photographing after I get the shots I want, will then suddenly toggle to video- and my big foot-long telephoto lens in the slightest of breezes is very unsteady... now add coffee and mustang excitement, and it makes me all too aware I need to slow down and some and use proper video equipment in the future LOL ... But for now this is what you guys get- since I can't take you all out there with me, I figure you may still like my sudden video-thought moments showing our amazing wild horses in motion through my glass- sort of like bringing you all out there with me.

Enjoy. And if you have little ones, sit them with you and tell them- YES, we do still have wild untouched mustangs roaming on vast and wild ranges out west where eagles glade and sunsets set the skies ablaze as far as the eyes can see.

Keep the WILD in our WEST and our WEST WILD~

  • Nature: Wild horses

This week's moment in nature takes you to the Pine Nut Mountains of western Nevada, where wild horses roam free.

  • Nevada Wild Horses: Mating Challenge Between Wild Stallions

Horses are majestic creatures, but watching them in the wild is truly exhilarating. The Nevada wild horses are one of the highlights of our travels we have been privileged to experience several times. This spring as we were camped in the Nevada desert, Debra spotted wild horses running back and forth in the same area about a mile or two away. We went to investigate immediately, and what we found was definitely different that we expected.

We discovered two wild stallions challenging each other for dominance and mating rights within the herd. These wild stallions had already been squaring off for some time when we arrived, and they continued for the time we were there. Robert was able to walk very close to the herd and the stallions to record this video. Since we had not planned a video shoot, this is true “run and gun” raw footage shot with an iPhone using only a pro video app - no microphone or stabilizer for any of this footage.

This video is dedicated to Robert’s father, Jay, in honor of his 69th birthday this week. Jay is a true “cowboy at heart” who taught Robert to appreciate horses at a young age. Dad, you would have loved being there for this experience!

  • Americans will soon have a $5 billion wild horse problem

In September’s roundup of the Onaqui wild horses in Tooele County’s west desert, the BLM removed 46 animals from Dugway Proving Ground at the request of the military. Other horses were removed from the fringes of the herd management boundaries.

The Deseret News spent eight months interviewing wildlife experts, rangeland ecologists, ranchers, cowboys, rural politicians, scientists and reviewing records with the Bureau of Land Management, which has oversight of the range, and lawsuits to understand this costly problem and what can be done about it.

  • AZ Salt River Wild Horses Stallion foal mare

Bachelor stallions battle this Band Stallion for his mare and foal. I taped this while out painting.

Spending time with wild horses changed me. I want to express the beauty, power and bonds that I see manifest in wild horses. The freedom, risk and challenge that are inherent in living wild in nature is reflected in my process of painting from life. My work is not solely a painting of a horse, but a reflected communication of their experience and our journey.

In addition to the experience of painting the landscape from life, I find painting horses from life to be not only challenging but vital to the life that I put into studio paintings. When painting a landscape from life, we don't need to worry about the landscape moving, (only the sun moving), when painting a human from life, we can pose the model, when painting a domestic horse from life, we can tie them to a hitching post, but painting a wild horse from life has none of those constraints. Somehow, the lack of those constraints symbolizes the freedom of wild horses. That energy, freedom and life is part of what I put into those studies.

Freedom is the essence of wild horses. There is something fundamentally pure and powerful in that. The feeling of being renewed, the sense of adventure and peaceful unity is what I want to pass on.

  • Saving the Mustang: North Americas Horse Nearly Extinct | Timeline

Wild mustangs have long been an icon of native peoples and early settlers of North America. Yet their fate today is uncertain. Traded, stolen, and wild for 400 years, an estimated 2-3 million roamed North America in 1890 until they became almost extinct. The US Government has attempted to control the number of Wild Mustangs populated and in their view over grazed on vast tracks of public land. Over 41 thousand are now held in captivity. Saving The Mustang explores the state of wild horses today through the efforts of three individuals. Canadian horseman Randy Bird who adopted eight mustangs from a crowded facility in Wyoming and brought them 3000 miles to their new home in Ontario. Endurance rider and song-writer Jean Albert Renaud, who works with horses and at-risk teens on his Maryland ranch. And Roger William, past chief of the First Nation Xeni Gwetin, who has created a 200,000 hectare wild horse preserve in the rugged wilderness of the Nemiah Valley in British Columbia. All three stories interweave a compelling tale of perseverance and determination - one that offers hope for these amazing animals.

    About This Episode:

Fighting for a life in freedom

The Wild Horses of the Namib hold a powerful fascination. For centuries their origin was shrouded in mystery.
Their habitat, the barren plains around Garub on the eastern fringe of the Namib Desert (part of the Namib-Naukluft Park),
is no paradise. Nevertheless, they have managed to adapt to the harsh conditions and the arid land which fulfills all their needs.

  • Australias wild desert horses: This environment tests them to their limits | 7.30

The number of wild horses, known as brumbies, roaming free in Australia's red centre is growing by about 20 per cent every year.
That means there's a risk that nature won't keep producing enough food to feed all of them.
At the same time, though, that there are questions over the wild horses' sustainability, they're becoming a drawcard for tourists from around the country and overseas.
Regional reporter Leonie Mellor has the story.

  • Wild MUSTANGS, Chasing Wild Horses and Comets

    2020 July The Comet Trip
Out in SE Oregon to see the mustangs during the comet NeoWise which this time would be visible in the NW skies after the sun set and the western sky was dark enough, we watched the weather closely and knew it to be a doozy with temps in the mid 90's. There was no moon so the stars and the comet were very visible and in our camp chairs it felt like we had the best seat in the house. But boy, I don't think I've ever seen the stars, Milky Way, and planets so bright. Alice and I as we were sitting in our chairs enjoying the night sky and planning the next day, decided then and there that the next new foal we find and hasn't been seen before would be named Comet to celebrate this amazing celestial even coming around every approx 7,000 years. So we set out on our mission the following day... having two vehicles parked each on opposite ends of our cross-country trek starting at one and ending at another. Her fit bit logged 14-15 miles, which included much zigging and zagging, crossing river canyons going from bands spread out by miles in this region. Read the full journal on my page Mustang Meg/July 2020.
I am not a videographer, so my apologies for the unpolished footage, as much of the camera work is handheld, and quickly toggled from stills to vids, often dealing with winds which cause a shake or wobble.
