Scarface is the Queen of the Beasts in Nakuru National Park, but she has a chequered past. Subscribe to Our World:

In her youth she was one of Kenya's Big Bad Cats - a killer of sheep and cattle. She could have been shot but she had luck on her side. Ten years previously, Nakuru was turned into a rhino sanctuary where prey animals were abundant and stock killing lions could be relocated instead of being the target of a bullet.

The lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family and a member of genus Panthera. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996, as populations in African range countries declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes of concern. The West African lion population is listed as Critically Endangered since 2016.

The lion (Panthera leo) has a number of characteristics that differentiate it from the other wild predatory cats of the world. One of the key differences is its social behavior. While some lions are nomadic and prefer to travel and hunt individually or in pairs, most lions live in a social organization known as a pride. It's a trait that's quite unique among the world's large cat species, most of which are lone hunters throughout their adult lives.

    ---------------
Lions are a universal emblem of courage – the super-charged hunting beasts admired for centuries for their strength and prowess. More than any other animal, lions symbolise Africa.

The roar of a lion fills the night – the world’s most chilling, spine-tingling sound - as powerful as the noise of a small plane taking off. It has a huge appetite: at one sitting, a hungry lion can eat the equivalent of a whole person. Its eyes are keen: this big tawny hunter has night vision six times better than ours. It’s a big killing machine: it weighs at least twice as much as a grown man, has claws like sharp switchblades, a rasping tongue much rougher than sandpaper. It can overpower animals far bigger than itself. Yet it can be gentle, caring and affectionate. Mothers even suckle each other’s cubs. The secret of the lion’s success is that it lives in a group – Africa’s most powerful land carnivore is the only truly social cat in the world.

The mighty male’s life is fraught with danger, the sleek female’s with the cares of child-minding, warring with neighbours, and risking all in the hunt. So do lions have it made?

We find out The Whole Story of life in the pride.

  • The Dark Side Of Dubai They Dont Want You To See Is Shocking

    10:41

Dubai is always synonymous with incredible wealth. It has come a long way from being a sleepy fishing port at the edge of the desert. Oil wealth has allowed Dubai to build skyscrapers that would put Manhattan to shame and roads in this part of the world are fit for any supercar. Gold once used to be a stronghold of Dubai. Unlike this precious metal, though, not everything glitters in this part of the world. The dark side of Dubai has been exposed very little to the outside world, but growth in technology is slowly.

Unlike tourist destinations that rely on visitors bringing in the wealth, Dubai is about using its extravagant wealth into creating a tourist spot out of a desert. But why is Dubai so rich? The immense wealth comes from oil reserves that were found in the 1960s. This transformed with the sleepy little town into a place where almost anything is possible. Unlike other oil-rich countries that have struggled to deal with the excess funds, Dubai has been able to invest wisely – under the guidance of King Sheikh Mohammed.

Dubai temperature has always been on the higher side with summers easily capable of scorching those without sunscreen protection. Yet, this region is easily one of the first names that come to mind when thinking of an extravagant holiday. This is partly down to the global brands that fight for a presence in a place where almost everyone is uber-rich. This is a place where the regular crop of luxury cars just do not cut the mustard. To put things into perspective, the police are handed out luxury sports cars like Lamborghini. There is an unseen side behind all the glitz and glamour. The latter is something that does not come to mind when it comes to the normal population, who are sadly forced to watch the entertainment from the sidelines.
    Modern Slavery
The biggest of problems never spoken about in this part of the world is the slavery that goes on unchecked. All the Dubai hotels and skyscrapers have been a massive factor behind fuelling a construction boom that has partly been responsible for making this one of the sought-after destinations in the world, according to this website. There are more than 100 different hotel projects that are taking place almost every year in this place, which has been marketed as the Las Vegas of the Middle East. It is immensely challenging to find the labor in an area that already has a small number of local people, while most residents happen to be incredibly wealthy.

A whopping 89% of the people living in Dubai are workers from other countries. A large contingent of individuals from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh often end up in the construction work. These South Asian migrants alone constitute around 40% of the workforce in the UAE, producing everything from construction materials, paper, foods and drinks to items such as a fleshlight sleeve. Most individuals belong to rural communities, and very few happen to have any form of education. These impoverished individuals often end up in deplorable working conditions at construction sites. Rather than meet their wage standards, most Dubai companies view these workers as cheap labor and offer them as little as $300 per month. This is in comparison to a per capita income of around $2000 per month.

    $10 Per Day
For around $10 per day, these employees end up spending most of the day at construction sites with little rest. Even though food and accommodation are provided on paper, this is often substandard and does not even come close to the standards that some workers enjoy in glitzy and expansive malls located here. Dubai weather may appear pleasant inside the air-conditioned spaces, but the reality is entirely different for these workers. They are often forced to work for six days a week in temperatures that can hit 50°C.

The living conditions of these workers can only be described as horrific, as many as ten individuals can be put into one room. Many sites often have just one bathroom for 50 persons. To prevent workers from escaping such conditions and reporting them to the outside world, most companies confiscate passports as soon as workers arrive on their doorstep.
If companies are trying to take advantage of these workers by offering them low wages, recruitment agencies do their part by charging exorbitant visa and flight fees. Many naïve individuals end up being more than $3000 in fees to these agencies, and this figure is often taken as a loan.

Construction demand is mainly responsible for fuelling the need for more construction workers. Dubai is aware that its oil reserves will not last for long, and they are building towards a more sustainable future, which is through tourism and entertainment activities. Construction activities have been progressing at breakneck speed for these achievements. The demand for new hotels in Dubai has once again picked up after the 2008 recession. Skyscrapers are becoming taller than ever before, malls are becoming larger.

African Journal of Wildlife Research 2020 - Kruger area averages 163 adult and yearling painted wolves (3 year lifespan), the KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga provinces average 79 total

similar to renaming killer whales to orca, many conservationists prefer using the name painted wolf derived from its binomial name Lycaon pictus

Africa once had over 500,000 painted wolves, packs of 100 were common, humans and lions are the main threats to painted wolves

painted wolves are not 'vicious, brutal, savage' they are only trying to survive, painted wolves (Lycaon pictus) are not feral dogs (Canis familiaris) or hyenas

there are no records of painted wolves attacking humans in the wild

painted wolves do not fight over food, and will help feed their injured pack members

the regional 'wild dog' name contributes to the common misconception that painted wolves (Lycaon pictus) are feral dogs (Canis familiaris)

A 20-Year Review of the Status and Distribution of African Painted Wolves (Lycaon pictus) in South Africa

February 2020 African Journal of Wildlife Research 50(1):8

    DOI:10.3957/056.050.0008

South Africa is one of only seven countries with a viable population of African painted wolves (Lycaon pictus).
The national population in 2017 was 372 adults and yearlings and comprised three subpopulations:
    1) Kruger National Park (Kruger),
    2) an intensively metapopulation established through reintroductions into isolated, fenced reserves, and
    3) a free-roaming population that occurs naturally outside protected areas.

We assessed the long-term (four painted wolves generations, ∼20 years) trends in population size and growth rate within each of these three subpopulations.
We found that Kruger supports a substantial population, which has declined over time.
The meta-population is the only subpopulation that has increased significantly over time (both in population size and number of packs), likely due to intensive conservation efforts and the reintroduction of painted wolves into 15 additional reserves since 1998.

The free-roaming subpopulation has remained small but stable, even though the number of packs has declined due to threats from humans.
The overall national population has remained stable even though the number of packs has increased. Kruger has consistently supported the highest proportion of the national population over the last two decades.
However, the contribution of the metapopulation has increased significantly over time.

It is clear that despite differences in survey effort among the three subpopulations, South Africa has a small (∼500) but stable population of painted wolves, with the metapopulation contribution becoming increasingly important.
The circumstances in the country necessitate, and demonstrate the benefit of, intensive, adaptive management for the national population of painted wolves.

While this assessment provides baseline information for the three subpopulations, painted wolf conservation in South Africa would benefit greatly from equal survey effort and standardized methods to accurately assess long-term population trends.

  • NYAMAKUNZE - The Killer Of Londolozi Named Big Black | LIONS OF AFRICA Episode 27

    8:04

Lions of Africa: Nyamakunze the Big Black male (1970´s - 1980´s)*

Note: Great tales of Big Black´s antics (a very aggressive and darkly-maned lion) are still told around the fires to this day. He remains a true Legend.
    Elmon Mhlongo, a tracker here for the past 45 years, remembers a particularly hair-raising encounter he shared with Lex Hes;
Lex first arrived at Londolozi in 1976 with a craving for adventure and a great love of the natural environment. Using battered old Land Rovers, Lex and the other rangers would take their guests out to view game that included lion, buffalo and hyena. To find these animals, rangers would make use of the skills of local Shangaan trackers (a vital part of game drive that continues to this day), whose skill in tracking animals is beyond belief.
Whilst driving a group of guests who wanted to see lions, Elmon Mhlongo raised his hand from a customised seat on the bonnet of the Land Rover, signalling that he had seen lion tracks in the road. The tracks were made by a large male lion referred to as Big Black, who roamed Londolozi during the late seventies and early eighties, and who was notoriously aggressive. With this in mind, Lex and Elmon instructed their guests to remain seated in the Land Rover whilst they tracked cautiously on foot.
Elmon recalls a cold bead of sweat running down his nose as he followed the lion’s tracks, which headed into a thicket. As Lex and Elmon rounded the thicket, Big Black, who had been watching them the entire time from the depths of the thicket, had now stood up and walked behind Lex and Elmon, essentially tracking them. Watching in horror from the Land Rover, one of the guests shouted out to get Elmon’s attention. As Elmon and Lex turned around, Big Black charged at them, producing growls that made the earth tremble. Lex and Elmon stood their ground and Big Black stopped a few meters from their feet, growling and lashing his tail from side to side. Not well known for their Olympic high jumping skills, Elmon and Lex had no way to get back to the Land Rover and called out to their guests to drive the vehicle toward them. Their calls were not answered as at this point the guests had buried themselves under the seats in panic. Knowing that they had no other choice, Lex and Elmon stood their ground for some very dragged-out minutes (which must have felt like a lifetime), before the lion moved off. Upon returning to the Land Rover Lex asked the guests why they had not driven towards them. Their only response was that they thought that once the lion had finished Lex and Elmon, he would return to the vehicle and finish off the six of them.

Lion Documentary - Lion's Kingdom Three Lion Prides Fighting For Food And Territory | Wild Planet
    #wildplanet #lion #animals
    ------------------
The saga of three lion families linked together by a strange, charming place. A beautiful oasis on the Mwagusi River in Tanzania where there is always water. It is called the Glade.
The continent of Africa is home to a vast number of different species, but of all the animals and birds it is the Lion that is most revered. These 3 one hour programs cover the different landscapes that make up the Lion s Kingdom and examine the role that the King of Beasts plays in each of these. The most stimulating and timeless trilogy for the whole family.

    Part 1: Pride and Punishment
In Tanzania's Ruaha National Park, it is the dry season, and thousands of animals converge on the last source of water, the Glade.

    Part 2: Hunter of Giants
The Glade is a paradise where there is always water, a place where strange things happen. As the dry continues in Ruaha, herds of elephants arrive in the Glade. They dig deep into the sand with their trunks to tap the cleanest waters. The Glade pride copy the elephants - unusual behavior, but not in the Glade.

    Part 3: Blood Rivals
Change comes to the Glade. An adult male arrives to resume his positions as leader, and father. The cubs grow quickly - there is one male amongst them. When the cub reaches adolescence he begins to play dangerous games, trying to mate with female members of the pride.

  • Top 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa

    9:08

Number 10: Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania
Kilimanjaro National Park spans an astounding 75,575 hectares, and Mount Kilimanjaro towers over it all. At nearly 5000 meters, the peak is the highest in Africa. Kilimanjaro also has three volcanoes, two of which are extinct, making it the largest volcano in the world. The park is home to many endangered species, but the landscape is the biggest draw as countless people make attempts at reaching the peak. Annually, 25,000 people hike Mt. Kilimanjaro, with two-thirds being successful.
Number 9: Maloti-Drakensberg Park, South Africa and Lesotho
One of the rare UNESCO sites that is transnational, Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area encompasses the Drakensberg Mountain Range in South Africa and also Selabathebe National Park in the Kingdom of Lesotho. Featuring mountains, valleys, and sub-alpine ecosystems, the entire area is home to an amazing array of plant and animal life, some of which exist nowhere else in the world. In fact, the flora of the region has its own category in the plant kingdom.
Number 8: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda
Stretching across 331 square kilometres of jungle, mountain and lowland forest, this national park in Uganda is an extraordinary section of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The national park is most famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas – with half of the world’s mountain gorilla population – but the area has an abundance of other species and is recognised as one of the richest ecosystems in Africa.
As many as 120 mammal species, 348 types of birds and 220 butterflies are among the fauna of more than 1000 flowering plant species, 163 tree species and over 100 different ferns.

Number 7: Okavango Delta – Botswana
On the other side of things, the Okavango Delta was named the 1000th site to be recognized by UNESCO in 2014, and it is a true testament to the adaptability of nature. As a permanent marshland, the delta experiences seasonal flooding from the River Okavango. The funny thing is that the river floods during the dry season, which would usually mess with the vegetation in a rather negative way, but the native flora and fauna have adapted their natural cycles to accommodate that fact.
Since the surrounding parts of Botswana adhere to those dry month standards and verge on becoming desert, animals flock to the marshlands to drink the crystal clear waters. As a result, the Okavango Delta becomes a densely populated menagerie, unlike anything else in the world. It’s no wonder that it was named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013.
Number 6: Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae – Egypt
Comprised of The Great Temple and The Small Temple, The Nubian Monuments are an example of breathtaking human creativity than has spanned the test of 3,000 years. Ramses II had the temples built over twenty years to celebrate the gods, his favorite wife Nefertari, and his victory over the Hittites. From hand-hewn colossi that greet you at the entrance to wall carvings that have painted the backdrops of Egyptologists’ dreams for decades, this place is a history buff’s gold mine.
Carved between 1264-1244 BCE, according to the Ancient History Encyclopedia, the Nubian Monuments were some of the first sites to gain the protection of the United Nations. In 1959, when a new dam was going to flood the valley where these monuments to the pharaoh Ramses II rested, UNESCO collected donations from around 50 countries and provided the $80 million to dismantle and move the monuments to safe ground. That was the beginning of UNESCO’s commitment to saving the world’s important sites.
Number 5: Kenya Lake System In The Great Rift Valley, Kenya
The Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley is a natural landscape consisting of three lake basins that are located at a valley floor. This site is noted for its rich population of migratory birds, great white pelicans, and lesser flamingo. But they are also a nesting and breeding site for great white pelicans, and mammals like black rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe and lions roam the land.
The three lakes that are encompassed in this lake system are as follows: Lake Elementaita, Lake Nakuru, and Lake Bogoria. These lakes are hydro-geologically connected to each other via subsurface seepage of water. The alkaline from these lakes supports the algae formation that serves as food for the flamingos.

Number 4: VICTORIA FALLS, ZAMBIA & ZIMBABWE
It is also known as Mosi oa Tunya or ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, this incredible site is located on the Zambezi River and marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Although the Falls are neither the highest nor the widest, it is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. At this point, the Zambezi River is more than 2km wide. This might be one of our best known World Heritage Sites.

  • The Downfall of the Selati western Kingdom by the Majingilane Lions | BATTLE OF SABI SANDS

    16:41

Episode No 39 - Lion warfare in Africa: Selati vs Majingilane*
    Rangers report:
The Selati were initially five and the Majingilane killed one of them in 2011. Then in March 2012 the four Selati conquered the Mapogo territory and killed the infamous Mr. T. During this time, the Majingilanes had little interest in attacking them because they already had an immense territory and they were same in number. One year later, in October 2013 Selati #2 also known as HANK, died some time after being injured by a buffalo and they were down to three. Now the Majingilane took their chance and started to expaned their territory into the western sector. In 2014 this results in number of clashes between these two coalitions. 3 separate fights followed where 4 Majingilane caught one Selati male each time. Selati #4 got caught in first, then Selati #1, then Selati #3 died after the 3rd encounter. The Selati were outnumbered in all the fights.
The two remaining Selatis left Sabi Sand into the north and entered into Manyeleti. Meanwhile their last son, the Selati/Othawa sub-adult male, was taking a fight that it couldn´t win. After its sibblings being killed by Hyenas, the brave little lion tried to survived in the Othawa pride. But...one day the killers of its fathers decided to end its short life. The Selati story took an abrupt end after 2 years of reign. r.i.p.

Travel video about nature park Etosha.
Year after year, Namibia’s Etosha National Park attracts thousands of visitors. Approximately 22,000 square kilometres in size, Etosha is a special wildlife experience and its magnificent flora is unique among all the other wildlife parks in Africa. It also has the reputation of being one of the major wildlife sanctuaries for a wide variety of Africa’s animal species, such as antelope, zebra, springbok, giraffe, lions, gnu, hyenas, gembok, elands and kudus.Apart from the desert-like area of the Etosha Salt Pan, the park consists of Mopani Woodland and Savannah Grassland and also a large number of acacia trees. The few precious water holes are an important and vital meeting place for many kinds of animals and ideal for observing wildlife in its natural habitat. The history of the impressive Namutoni Fort dates back as far as 1851 when explorers set up camp next to the Namutoni Spring. The fort was completely renovated in 1983 and today it is one of the national park’s three camps that offer overnight accommodation. Although most Namibia’s major roads are covered with asphalt, the roads inside the national park often consist of loose gravel, or even sand, and are called, ‘Pads’. The desert-like Etosha Pan is a place of timeless tranquillity, a flat saline desert, 130 kilometres long by 50 kilometres at its widest point. Close to Namutoni, Fischer's Pan is well known for its excellent variety of different bird species, among them Namibia's national bird, the crimson-breasted Shrike. In other words, the Etosha National Park is a nature lovers’ paradise!
