  • 10 Scientifically Impossible Places That Actually Exist

    11:00

The Seven Wonders of the Natural World may have been named too quickly. Wonders like The Grand Canyon and Victoria Falls are certainly big, and anyone who sees them will surely be impressed—but sheer size isn’t enough to truly leave a person in awe.
There are other places in this world, though, that are far stranger. Places that seem almost alien, as if they could only exist on a planet that evolved separately from our own. These are places that scientists have had to struggle just to understand how they ever could have been formed. Places that will truly make you wonder—not just because they’re beautiful, but because they seem to follow scientific laws that don’t exist anywhere else on earth. Here are 10 Scientifically Impossible Places That Actually Exist

  • Worlds biggest dam: Chinas engineering masterpiece or environment disaster? | 60 Minutes Australia

Subscribe here: Full Episodes: | The other great wall (2008)

This is China's most spectacular extravaganza. A hundred years in the making, costing $25 billion, one of the biggest engineering feats the world has ever seen. And, according to its critics, an environmental disaster on a monumental scale. The Three Gorges Dam is certainly a sight to behold, a massive wall of concrete spanning the mighty Yangtze River. The Chinese say it's all about flood control and clean hydro electric power. The environmentalists say true, it is about power. Power and national pride and the arrogance of man trying to tame forces of nature.

  • Why city flags may be the worst-designed thing youve never noticed | Roman Mars

    18:19

Roman Mars is obsessed with flags — and after you watch this talk, you might be, too. These ubiquitous symbols of civic pride are often designed, well, pretty terribly. But they don't have to be. In this surprising and hilarious talk about vexillology — the study of flags — Mars reveals the five basic principles of flag design and shows why he believes they can be applied to just about anything.

  • Coronas consequences – how the pandemic is changing globalization | DW Documentary

    42:27

Around the world, pandemic-related lockdowns have hit our globalized economy hard. Supply chains have been disrupted, industries crippled. The coronavirus has laid bare the risks of global interconnectedness. Is the crisis the beginning of the end of globalization?

In early 2020, when much Asian production and manufacturing was shut down, the effects were quickly felt in supply chains. The flow of raw materials and other products that drives global trade dried up. Hamburg port operator HHLA reported losses of up to 40 percent, with supply shortfalls bringing production at German factories to a temporary halt. Coronavirus-related lockdowns in Europe led to garment workers in Bangladesh losing their livelihoods. This documentary shows how such global dependencies function during a pandemic. Is it time to bring back local production, to ensure populations are provided for even in times of crisis?

This film shows that many are thinking hard about the issue. Companies are diversifying their supply chains, or stepping up digitalization efforts. In Germany, public funds are being used to encourage home-grown production of protective equipment in order to secure supplies in the future. But for the majority of German companies such measures would make production drastically more expensive. Globalization is in many ways the cause of exploitation and social injustice, yet if developing countries were to lose huge orders without compensation, the result would likely be dire. Many more people will die from hunger than from the pandemic, fears globalization expert Ian Goldin of Oxford University. But could the coronavirus crisis also bring positive changes, like a fairer division of labor, more conscientious consumption, less pollution, and more social responsibility?

Today we are looking at the St Francis (Near LA) dam disaster, it is considered to be one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century and remains the second-greatest loss of life in California's history.

The dam was designed and built between 1924 and 1926 as part of the Los Angeles water project, headed up by the famous William Mulholland, but his career would end the same night as the disaster.

The event took place at 11:57 p.m. on 12 March, 1928, the dam failure, and resulting flood killed at least 431 people

  • If You See This Fish, Find Shelter Fast

    8:37

Can animals sense earthquakes? Nobody can reliably predict when and where an earthquake will occur. But there are animals that can be used to predict earthquakes! For example, oarfish can feel the electromagnetic changes happening when underwater earthquakes shake the bottom of the ocean. Plus, oarfish, the longest bony fish in the world, are really bad swimmers and can't withstand strong currents. That's why they drift to the shore before tsunamis.

But this isn't the only way to predict earthquakes. Have you ever heard of earthquake lights? They don't come out before every earthquake and take different colors and shapes. From short blue sparks to huge forks of light, they look as though some interstellar visitors decided to see how things are down on Earth. They can look like ball lightning that stays up from tens of seconds to minutes. Quake lights have been spotted all across the world over the centuries, from Italy to San Francisco and Japan. Powerful earthquakes followed them... What natural disasters can people predict? And how do we do it?

Inhabited as early as 5000 BCE, the ancient city of Pella prospered during the Greco-Roman period. Placed at the crossroads of numerous trading routes that linked Europe to the near East and Asia, the city flourished with trade and was influenced by the diverse cultures who visited there.

    1. Skara Brae, Scotland
Known as one of Orkney's most visited ancient sites, the village of Skara Brae is considered one of the most remarkable prehistoric monuments in Europe. Discovered in the late 1800s after exceptionally high tides during a storm unearthed its ruins, the village was saved from obscurity.

  • 6 Mega Natural Disasters Just Waiting to Happen

    9:04

Our planet is full of scary events, phenomena, and natural disasters that change the face of Earth every day. Tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, fires... And then, just when you think you've seen it all, nature presents you with another startling phenomenon. Rocks rolling down the slopes of a rumbling volcano, pushing other, bigger rocks on their way, and eventually tumbling down into the ocean in a humongous cascade, causing a wave the height of which the world’s never seen before. This is what might happen if the Hilina Slump of the Hawaiian Big Island falls off into the water.

Or imagine an eruption spewing tons of huge rocks and rivers of hot lava, pumping out clouds of ash that make countries stop air travel for weeks. And now multiply all this by a thousand. This is what a Yellowstone eruption would look like. Yes, Yellowstone is, first and foremost, an enormous caldera — basically, a slumbering supervolcano! And if dinosaurs could talk (and were at least still alive, for that matter), they’d tell you that asteroid threat is as real as it gets... Let's find out what naural disasters could happen any moment and affect millions.

  • Will the Cascadia Earthquake be the Worst Disaster North America’s Ever Seen? | Weathered

    ↓ More info below ↓
The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a sleeping monster lurking just off the Northwest coast of the United States. It extends 600 miles between Northern California and Vancouver B.C. and experiences a massive megathrust earthquake every 250 years on average. The last one happened 321 years ago and scientists say there is a 30% chance we’ll see another in the next 50 years. It’s expected to rival the 9.0 quake that shook Japan for 6 minutes, which was the most destructive natural disaster in human history. It unleashed a tsunami that reached 100 feet in some areas, caused an estimated $360 billion in damages and claimed some 16,000 lives.

If this sounds ominous, that’s because it is. As catastrophic as the Tohoku quake was, Japan is light years ahead of the United States when it comes to earthquake preparedness. This grim reality has many experts very worried. And in this episode of Weathered we spoke with some of them about what we can expect when the “Big One” does hit, the kinds of work that need to be done to make our communities more resilient, and what you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Weathered is a show hosted by meteorologist Maiya May and produced by Balance Media that helps explain the most common natural disasters, what causes them, how they’re changing, and what we can do to prepare.

  • Worst Natural Disasters in Human History

    8:59

What are the worst disasters that ever happened!?!
Our planet is a living planet, and the only known celestial body to have both a fully functioning climate system and active plate tectonics. But all that moving and shaking makes the Earth a potentially dangerous place to call home, and natural disasters are an unfortunate but inevitable part of life for any species that calls our blue marble home.
Evolving about 100,000 years ago, modern man has barely been around for but a blink of an eye of the earth's history, and while we've been spared some of the greatest catastrophes to ever rock the planet, we've faced our share of natural disasters.
Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're taking a look a the worst natural disasters in human history.

In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we travel to Nacogdoches, Texas from Oregon in search of any remnants of the Space Shuttle Columbia which crashes over Texas upon reentry in Feb 2003.

Parts of the space shuttle have been found on the family farm and it's been rumored that after seeing a 20-foot section of lily pads uprooted and turned over with a new mud island being pushed up in the pond, that there may just be a few more pieces of the space shuttle not yet recovered.

Mapping Mortality: The ways people die.

A Conversation with Deepak Chopra and Richard Saul Wurman on the book, Mortality by Richard Saul Wurman and Nigel Holmes.

Described by Fortune magazine as an “intellectual hedonist” with a “hummingbird mind,” Richard Saul Wurman has always sought ways to make the complex clear. He has written, designed and published 83 books on topics ranging from football and healthcare to city guides, as well as two books on Louis I Kahn (including the first to be published on him in 1962), his mentor, but he likes to say that they all spring from the same place – his ignorance.

Wurman also created and chaired the TED conference from 1984 thru 2003, the TEDMED conference from 1995 to 2010 as well as the eg, WWW and Intellectual Jazz conferences. He is currently developing the 555 conference, consisting of 5 experts, 5 predictions of future game changing patterns for 5 years in the future…FINDING THE FUTURE FIRST™.

This all sounds like he knows a lot about a lot of things.

    The complete opposite is true.

His long suite is that he has continued to embrace his ignorance more deeply than others.

  • A Conversation on Art & Healing: US Exhibition Premiere of Memento Mori

    53:51

Join us for an exclusive virtual preview of Yuri Shimojo's Memento Mori, a monumental painting series premiering in the US on the tenth anniversary of the Japanese Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear crisis. Meet Yng-Ru Chen '01, owner of the Boston-based Praise Shadows Art Gallery; Yuri Shimojo, the artist; and Gennifer Weisenfeld, professor of art, art history & visual studies at Duke University, as they discuss Shimojo's exhibition, and Chen's journey from Duke University to the international art world, including Sotheby's and MoMA.

Dedicated to the memory of the lives lost in the disaster and considered Shimojo's most significant work to date, Memento Mori has only been shown in the Japanese cities Kyoto (2013) and Tokyo (2014)—until now. This event will also feature a preview of the artist's new mixed media installation dedicated to the victims of Tōhoku, as well as the millions of lives lost around the world to COVID‑19. The panel's exploration of the artist's response to the 21st-century universal human condition will illuminate how empathy and resilience are born out of crisis.

This event is presented in conjunction with Duke Boston, Duke Entertainment, Media & Arts Network (DEMAN), Duke Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies (AAHVS), Duke Asian Alumni Alliance (DAAA), Duke Student Wellness Center (DuWell), Duke Arts, DukeCreate and Duke Asian/Pacific Studies Institute Undergraduate East Asian Studies Certificate.
