  • 10 Years of Intel CPUs Benchmarked: i7-930, 2600K, 4790K, & Everything Since

    29:56

Intel's last decade started off with the launch of one of the best CPUs Intel has made, but stagnated in the middle and ended tempestuously. Here's a decade of Intel CPUs benchmarked.

    Intel i9-9900K on Amazon:
    AMD R7 3700X on Amazon:
    AMD R5 3600 on Amazon:

This is the last time we are using this testing methodology, most likely. It's about to be retired and replaced with a fully new set of tests and methods, so we wanted to send it out on a high note.

Benchmarking a decade of Intel CPU launches was an exhaustive task, but we've got most of the major i5 and i7 launches (a few skipped ones, like the 3770K) and a couple of key AMD parts. This is 10 years of Intel, so we focused on plotting Intel component scaling generationally, price creep generationally, and price-to-price gains in performance. AMD isn't the focus of the piece since we really want to narrow-in on Intel's story for the last 10 years, including its triumphant start to the decade, its asymptotic curve in the middle, and its tumultuous final years in the 2010s. AMD gets appearances for perspective of what Intel must battle today, so that'd be relegated to the 3000 series, including the AMD R5 3600, AMD R7 3700X, and occasionally the AMD R9 3950X.

This benchmarking revisits most of the CPUs from Intels last ten years, but heavily features the following:

    Intel Core i5-2500K & Core i7-2600K in 2020
    Intel Core i5-3570K
    Intel Core i5-4690K, Core i7-4790K in 2020
    Intel Core i7-5775C, Core i5-6600K, Core i7-6700K
    Intel Core i5-7600K, i7-7700K
    Intel Core i5-8400, i7-8700K
    Intel Core i5-9600K, i7-9700K, i9-9900K

We also occasionally feature the earlier mentioned AMD parts, but they're not the focus of this one.

  • Best CPUs of 2020 So Far

    24:10

We're recapping the best CPUs of 2020 so far. With half the year over, and with ever more CPUs on the horizon, it's time to look at the best gaming CPUs, best budget CPUs, best production, & more.
Back-order a GN Mouse Mat here:

    All CPUs linked below.
    Article and additional links:

This CPU round-up recaps all our testing and benchmark data from the most recent CPU launches, including the Intel 10th Gen CPUs and AMD Ryzen 3 3300X & 3100 launch. Our goals are to look for the best CPUs for gaming, the best CPUs for video editing (rendering) & programming (code compile), for 3D modeling and animation, for Photoshop, the most fun overclocking CPUs, the best budget CPUs, and the best overall CPU. Some of these categories consider price, some don't -- it just depends on what's being discussed. The Intel vs. AMD Ryzen benchmarks have heated up lately, and so the results have shuffled from our previous Best Of round-up. For more depth on any given CPU, please check the corresponding reviews by searching the channel. We won't be going in as much excruciating detail in this one as in the reviews, as it's meant to be more of a buyer's guide.

A lot has changed in the tech world since last year, so we wanted to provide an update to our recommendations for what to consider when building or buying a PC. When it comes to video editing and animation, it is crucial that it is as snappy and responsive as possible. AMD has come in strong this generation and shaken things up tremendously. Instead of providing broad strokes ideas, this time we really wanted to drill into the Price and Performance of the major available processors and see how they all stack up. We hope you enjoy!

  • Why Most Cooler Tests Are Flawed: CPU Cooler Testing Methodology

    33:54

This video defines our benchmarking methodology for the next several years of CPU cooler testing, highlighting common errors made that we've solved for.
Sponsor: Support our testing overhauls on Patreon ( - this is a great way to help us fund staying true to our content style and focus on depth, but to also get some behind-the-scenes videos in return.

    Article/notes:

CPU cooler testing is always flawed, in every execution, almost no matter what you do. You can solve for the many flaws created by the test bench by using dummy heaters, but then new issues of realism are introduced, and resolution of real-world impact can be lost. We've worked for 6 months to narrow-down the list of issues on test benches and, over that time, we briefly crippled ourselves with the knowledge of how inherently flawed most cooler tests on real platforms are. Our new testing approach resolves much of this, but also introduces custom-built dummy heaters that we've collaborated with an engineering firm to create. Between the refined 'real' computer test bench and the dummy heaters, we now have enough to create what we believe to be among the most accurate cooler reviews we can do. There will always be flaws in CPU cooler testing, it's just a matter of mitigating them to a point where testing becomes accurate.

  • 2020 vs. 2014 CPUs: Intel i7-4790K, 4770K, & i5-4690K vs. 10600K, 10900K, 3700X, 3900X

    29:59

    A lot has happened since our last Intel i7-4790K, i5-4690K, & i7-4770K benchmarks. The Intel i5-10600K, i7-10700K, i9-10900K, and AMD's 3700X, 3600, & 3900X deserve fresh comparisons.
Sponsor: Arctic's Liquid Freezer II 280 on Amazon ( or the P12 fans on Amazon (

Find our CPU testing methodology for 2020 over here:
Article version of CPU testing methodology:

In this revisit of the Intel i7-4790K (incl. 4.8GHz overclock), i7-4770K, and i5-4690K, we're considering the new landscape in mid-2020. Our revisit back in December didn't have the context of AMD's new Ryzen 3000 pricing, which has fallen dramatically since (the 3700X is now much cheaper, thanks to the 3800XT, 3600XT, and 3900XT), and the Intel 10-series CPUs weren't out last time. Further still, we completely overhauled our testing methodology after the last revisit, all linked above, and that includes the addition of several more core- and thread-intensive games, like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Total War: Three Kingdoms, among other changes. The Intel i7-4790K Devil's Canyon CPU was a serious overclocker, so we pushed ours to an impressively high (for the chip) 4.8GHz, allowing us to compare vs. new AMD Ryzen CPUs and Intel i5-10600K, 10700K, and 10900K CPUs. Anyone looking to upgrade from their Intel 4790K and 4690K in 2020 is likely looking for the new best CPU out now, and our benchmarks will help identify the best CPUs for gaming, video editing and rendering (Adobe Premiere), overclocking, and production.

  • Operating Systems: Crash Course Computer Science #18

So as you may have noticed from last episode, computers keep getting faster and faster, and by the start of the 1950s they had gotten so fast that it often took longer to manually load programs via punch cards than to actually run them! The solution was the operating system (or OS), which is just a program with special privileges that allows it to run and manage other programs. So today, we’re going to trace the development of operating systems from the Multics and Atlas Supervisor to Unix and MS-DOS, and take at look at how these systems heavily influenced popular OSes like Linux, Windows, MacOS, and Android that we use today.

    ______________

MacOS has had a long history, stretching back to 1984 with the original classic operating system. It set a new standard for computing by popularizing the graphical user interface and mouse. Since that initial release, macOS has gone through many iterations, but this video isn’t about the operating system’s history, that’ll be for another time. Today, I’m going to explain the significance of the most recent macOS version called Big Sur, to be released sometime this fall. It marks a completely new era for the Mac, and lays the groundwork for future models featuring Apple’s custom-designed ARM processors that could completely change the way Macs are used.
