  • Gigantic Overseas Autoliner | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A transport to the other side of the globe. The “Höegh Trapper” is the largest automobile transporter in the world. Two hundred meters long, thirty-six meters wide. But the major attraction is actually behind the steel hull: A gigantic cargo area: In total over seventy-one thousand square meters. Enough room for eight-thousand-five-hundred cars. And hundreds of the so-called “High- and Heavies”: Gigantic machines of any kind.
Her journey takes the fully loaded “Trapper” on a journey covering
28,000 kilometers. The starting point: Antwerp in Belgium. Here, Port Captain Per Henningsen has to load 1,000 cars in record time – only 16 hours. Next stop: Bremerhaven, in Germany. Besides 2,000 cars here,
Per has to load 200 high and heavy units – one of which has him
worrying more than usual. He doesn’t know the exact measurements of the mysterious cargo – will it fit into the Trapper? From Bremerhaven, the journey continues to England, France, and Spain, and then out onto the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. From there across the pond to ports in the US and Jamaica, through the Panama Canal onto the Pacific and all the way to New Zealand and Australia…All that in just fifty days! The Panama Canal is the bottleneck of the journey. The canal is over a hundred years old and was designed for the largest ships at that time. Maximum width: 32.3 meters. For behemoths like The Trapper, that’s not enough. Canal authorities began construction on newer, larger lock systems in 2007. Since its opening in 2016, ships belonging to the so-called Neopanamax class can now transit the canal and that includes the Trapper. But even though the new lock chambers are fifty-five meters wide: For the Trapper this means not even ten meters clearance on either side - a special challenge for Captain She and his crew…

  • Gigantic Wind Park Relocation | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A wind park needs to get from Europe to Asia. Over two thousand tons of highly sensitive and valuable cargo. On one of the world’s largest heavy lift vessels.
The team has only 37 days for loading in two ports and travelling once around half of the globe. To be able to transport the entire cargo, the crew even has to build another level altogether – in the middle of the deck.

It’ll be an ongoing battle for five straight weeks. Against time. And against weather.

The load: Five gigantic nacelles, each as heavy as a Boeing 747 and nine 75-meter-long blades. All these wind park components have been specially designed to fit together – and can only be replaced with a huge effort. Any damage to the cladding or the electronics could delay construction of the whole wind park project by months.

The loading process is extremely complicate and has been developed especially for this transport! So no one has any experience with it. The crew has to trust the plans of the engineers. And they don’t have ANY margin of error. Just a couple centimeters too far to the left or right would mean: everything out again.
A project never before undertaken – anywhere in the world. And no one knows if the risky plan will prove successful in the end.
A mega transport in the superlative. Over two thousand two hundred tons of cargo on three levels. Below deck, on deck, and above deck.

  • Huge Drilling Rig Transport | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

An drilling rig is towed around the world by a single tug.

A brand-new drilling rig, worth 500 million dollar, has to go from South Korea to Europe. The problem: It is too gigantic for a heavy transport vessel. The solution: it’s being towed. By one single tug. It’s a true Mega Transport, halfway around the globe – all that in just 90 days.

The Mega Transport starts in Ulsan, South Korea. West Bollsta was built here for 6 years – and is now ready to get to its operation site. But how should this beast be delivered? It’s 123 meters long and 76 meters wide. Its maximum drilling depth: incredible 12 kilometers! Way to bulky to be transported in a common way. Surprisingly, a rather small kind of boat is best for the job: the ALP Striker – one of the strongest ocean tugs in the world.

The ALP Striker will pull the drilling rig across the oceans on arm-thick steel cables. They are so heavy that only the ship's own crane can move them. Connecting tug and rig alone takes a whole day.
Once the drilling rig is towed to the tug, they’re embarking on a journey never before seen: around the cape of good hope. Navigation, pirates, wind and waves – there are many unpredictable challenges along the way. Once they have managed them all, the destination is in sight: the Canary islands.

By two thousand and eight, Norway will be connected to the United Kingdom via a 1200 km super pipeline—the longest subsea pipeline in the world. But this connection is only a part of an enormous plan to tap into Norway’s second largest gas deposit, capable of providing 20% of the UK’s gas needs for decades to come. Located 3 km below the ocean’s surface and 120 km offshore, the deposit is beyond the reach of humans and all of the construction has to be completed by robots working against strong underwater currents, sub-zero temperatures and extreme wind and wave conditions. When tapped, the gas will be transported to one of the largest automated gas processing plants to prepare it for shipment to U.K. Each phase will put ingenuity and engineering to the ultimate test.

Australia's Lost Gold - The Search for Sunken Treasure | History Documentary

Much of the west coast of Australia was discovered by accident, when Dutch treasure galleons ploughed into its fringing coral reefs and left chests of gold and silver on the coral floor. Ben Cropp has discovered hundreds of shipwrecks, including the famous Pandora of Bounty fame but there are thousands more still hidden in a watery grave. For example it’s believed the Japanese pirate Yamada Nagamasa buried his enormous loot on Magnetic Island. It is rumored to be worth $100 million, and has never been found. Ben finds a strange symbol carved in a prominent rock on Magnetic Island, opposite the only bay a ship could safely anchor in. Is this symbol the proverbial ‘x’ marking the spot? So what became of all the gold and silver that fate often cruelly snatched from its rightful owners? Some was recovered, some lost forever, but much still remains for the intrepid treasure hunter who is prepared to research the facts, sift through the legends, and give it a try. Ben’s film will take us around Australia to where these sunken treasures lie

In February 2008, a team of the world’s leading marine scientists set out onboard the RV Tangaroa on a voyage like no other across the Great Southern Ocean to Antarctica. In the footsteps of Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition, their mission is to discover more about marine life in Antarctic waters. This is unchartered territory – as many scientists say… ‘less is known about the Antarctic seabed than the surface of Mars!’ Cooped up on a research vessel for 50 days they battle ferocious storms, some of the worst ice conditions ever encountered and personal tragedy. The stakes are high but this is science at the edge. If successful their findings could profoundly affect all our lives as the intrepid crew seek out clues about the future fate of our planet beneath the icy waters of one of the world’s most perilous yet most important oceans.

Hunt for U-479 - Episode 1: The Lost Boat | History Documentary

Two Finnish filmmakers and a team of international divers go in search of a WWII German U-boat and attempt to uncover the facts of a 60-year mystery. The U-479 went missing in November 1944, in the Gulf of Finland. Soviet sources claimed that their submarine, the Lembit sunk the boat, but the official story has never been considered a satisfactory explanation so the filmmakers decide to do some digging of their own.

The first episode introduces the filmmakers as they go in search of a technical diving and underwater camera team in Sweden. The team set out for Estonia, where they find the submarine Lembit, a vital part of the mystery of U-479. Maritime archeologists in Finland fill us in on the story of the Russian warship Russalka, while the Swedes go diving in Narvik. The team find the perfect boat for their quest, the Perlargonia and head to Germany to visit the U-boat archive in search of answers.

Antarctica Ready for Winter | Geology Documentary

Antarctica is key to understanding our world because it is so deeply interconnected with the Earth’s climate and oceans. Geological samples from this frozen continent provide insight into changes in climate over the past million years, allowing scientists to study global warming in a historical context.
Russia has been at the forefront of Antarctic exploration for almost two centuries. Since the First Russian Antarctic Expedition in 1820, led by F. F. Bellingshausen and M.P. Lazarev, its scientists have made significant contributions to investigating and especially mapping the Antarctic. From that time on, extensive research has been carried out, first by several Soviet and then Russian institutions, and the country now maintains five permanent southern polar stations.

The trouble is that, despite advances in modern transport, the only reliable means of reaching the world’s southernmost continent is by sea. The diesel-electric research vessel Akademik Fyodorov was almost made for the job. This time, the flagship of Russia’s polar research fleet is on a mission to visit two year-round Antarctic stations, Progress and Novolazarevskaya.

The Fyodorov, the only research ship able to reach Antarctica without an ice-breaker convoy, has been through thick and thin over the years and so has its crew! The most established member is 86-year-old Arnold Budretsky, a polar exploration pioneer. There was nothing but ice and stone before he and his fellow explorers first landed on that frozen desert. Arnold himself has been in charge of opening 10 Antarctic stations, and has accumulated an impressive reserve of knowledge and experience to pass on to the next generation of explorers.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Liberia in 2012

Torrential rain, flooded villages, crossings turned into rivers, overflowing sewage systems, people drowning in their own homes; the rainy season in Liberia is one of the most destructive in the world. For pennies, Fofana battles the conditions to take passengers through the jungles that occupy much of the country. His brave but hellish exploits reveal the country’s plights and desperation. Priests in a baptist church turn Mass into a lucrative tombola, exposing the church to corruption. Children as young as five are breaking stones to sell as gravel for next to nothing, instead of being at school. Workers of a multinational palm oil manufacturer are transported to the work sites in overcrowded animal containers to slave away under the sun. The difficulties of a country ravaged by civil war are exacerbated as transport routes are destroyed by avalanches of water and villages are cut off.

Underwater Volcanoes - Oases of the Sea | Free Documentary Nature

Countless marine animals frolic on the steep slopes of underwater volcanoes. In many cases, several are rare species not found elsewhere. This is in part due to the fact that plankton clings to the wall and provides the fish with food in abundance. This documentary shows several of these oases and also examines the impact dive tourism has and whether preventive measures can help to maintain them.
Nature and underwater filmmaker Rolf Möltgen undertakes dives into the mysterious underwater mountain landscapes with marine scientists from all corners of the globe. This journey takes us to Mexico, to snappers, white-tip reef sharks, Galapagos sharks and giant mantas. We visit the Maldives, Colombia and Costa Rica, where the team documents rare species such as deep sea burbots, small tooth sand tiger and dogfish sharks, in depths of more than 300 metres.
The eerie underwater mountain world proves: everyone plays a part in the network of life. Thanks to consistent protective regulations, it has been possible to retain the underwater diversity - especially in the unique oases of the high seas.

The Underwater Wonderland of Australia | Ocean Documentary

Australia stands for tourism icons like the Ayers Rock, the Pinnacles and the Kakadu National Park. Crocodiles, Koalas and Kangaroos are possibly the most popular animals of the world. Venomous snakes, and spiders are in focus of the media as well as the famous great Barrier Reef and the Ningaloo Reef - the reef of the whale sharks. This under-water documentary concentrates on the two big coral reefs. The Australian Paul Waghorn is one of the underwater specialists of the Mountain Pictures team. He possibly spends more hours underwater than on land. He describes the biodiversity off the two reefs at the east and west coast of Australia as a symphony of the ocean. It teaches us to understand not only the animals but also our own humans variety of species as a miracle. Nature does not know man made rules and religions and it is anything but a happy wonderland. The species have developed her own methods of surviving. Pauls cinematic concert is asking the spectator to think about wrong or right, good and bad, stupidity and cleverness in the world of plants and creatures of the ocean.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Bolivia in 2007 (The very first episode of the series)
Criss-crossing the valleys of Bolivia, hundreds of metres above the ground, is a network of makeshift cables. Clinging onto these cables, coca growers whizz across the mountains, transporting their harvest. Should they slip or the aged cables snap, they face certain death. Once they’ve reached the other side of the mountain, the danger doesn’t end. The coca then has to be transported along the ’Camino de la Muerte’, or Highway of Death’. It’s the only route connecting La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital, with the Amazon Basin. And it’s officially the most dangerous road in the world.

    Deadliest Roads - Myanmar:

Situated in the extreme north-west of Afghanistan, the Wakhan corridor is bordered by the Hindou Kouch mountains and peaks at almost 5000 metres high.

This forgotten region of Afghanistan is the only one to have been spared by the war that has raged through the country for years. No soldier, neither American nor from the Taliban, has ever entered it. Its inhabitants live as if in the middle ages, without water or electricity, and make a living by bartering. The only road that cuts through the corridor is almost inaccessible, crossing the mountainside, often buried by metres of snow. A handful of adventurers, travelling in rickety lorries, have dared to brave the isolated corridor, battling against the extreme elements. And, of course, the odd sheep and yak…

  • Most Dangerous Ways To School | ETHIOPIA | Free Documentary

    48:01

When the schoolchildren wake up to the first rays of sunshine, the temperature is already over 30 degrees Celsius. They live in the Danakil desert in northeast Ethiopia, near an active volcano, in a region that is the world’s hottest on average. Amongst these children are 6-year-old Looita and his sister Khadiga.

Their route to school, which is many kilometres long, takes these children of the Afar tribe over jagged earth, over seemingly endless lengths, and every day they are confronted with much more than just the astounding heat. Not one shadow offers coolness; water is a rare and expensive commodity. Even if a breath of wind blows through the desert it most often quickly evolves into a sandstorm, the grains of which temporarily blind the children and whip at their skin. The very young schoolchildren deal with this until they finally reach their destination: school. But it isn’t over yet. There is still plenty of danger to come.

After school they have to head home in unbelievable temperatures, beyond 50 degrees Celsius. Even the youngest schoolchildren have to help dig wells, while the older children – like 14 year Mohammed – work in the salt mines, to aid their family’s survival. The children as well as the adults do not give up hope that school will help them one day - not just to survive, but also to live well off the barren and inhospitable desert.

  • Miami Resort | Building Demolition | BlowDown | S01 E03| Free Documentary

    50:27

Miami Resort Demolition: Blowdown is an explosive four part series profiling some of the most challenging projects of Controlled Demolition Inc of Phoenix, Maryland.
Each of the structures, some notable, others notorious is unique and present the team with challenges ranging from the structural, to the explosive and to the bureaucratic.

In this episode, the team from CDI travels to Bal Harbour, in Miami Beach Florida to take down an old resort complex set in the middle of some of Florida’s most expensive real estate. The Sheraton Bal Harbour Beach Resort played host to Frank Sinatra and John F Kennedy, just days before his assassination. Designed during the post World War II boom the Sheraton was one of North America’s first luxury resorts. Over the years the shine on the resort’s crown tarnished and developers purchased the property to make way for a billion dollar condominium/hotel development.

The stars of the film are the two major structures that make up the core of the resort’s property: a 17 storey hotel tower, and a 12 storey parking complex with hotel rooms on the top floors. The demolition team struggles with the proximity of the neighbors – one set are just 18 feet away – and the difficulty of undermining a structure built to withstand hurricane forces.

To bring the two towers down the team will use both dynamite and shaped charges - over 500 pounds of blasting power. The shaped charges are high velocity explosives – the same technology they employ is used in armor piercing shells and warheads. The team uses the charges to cut structural steel found inside the towers.

The team comes in to work the Miami job strait from another demolition: the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. They have just ten days to prepare, load and implode the resort complex. Major concerns are the proximity of the neighbors, undermining the structural steel in the resort towers, and the dust cloud created by the implosion.
