  • 5 Strangest Planets Ever Discovered In Space!

    10:25

With constantly improving technology, and an increased number of telescopes looking out into the Universe, we’re now able to detect the presence of planets in far away solar systems, and the data that’s collected tells us a lot about what conditions there are like. Up until October of 2019, at least 4,118 exoplanets planets have been confirmed in systems other than our own, and while a number of these appear to be boring, lifeless lumps of rock, there are some that have exceeded expectations. Here are 5 of the strangest planets to have ever been discovered in Space!

Something massive, with roughly 1,000 times the area of Earth, is blocking the light coming from a distant star known as KIC 8462852, and nobody is quite sure what it is. As astronomer Tabetha Boyajian investigated this perplexing celestial object, a colleague suggested something unusual: Could it be an alien-built megastructure? Such an extraordinary idea would require extraordinary evidence. In this talk, Boyajian gives us a look at how scientists search for and test hypotheses when faced with the unknown.

  • Exoplanets: The Search for New Worlds

    1:24:28

A few decades ago, we knew of no other planets beyond those in our solar system. Today, astronomers have confirmed over 700 planets circling other suns and believe billions more lay undiscovered. These new worlds have smashed conventional assumptions, revealing planets orbiting multiple stars, planets that don’t orbit stars at all, and at least one as airy as Styrofoam. The incredible boom in planetary diversity raises tantalizing prospects for an Earth analog that could harbor life—as we know it, and as we never imagined it.

    9 . Gliese 581 C
One of our greatest human desires is to explore beyond our solar system and explore the stars and planets beyond. It's this desire that is the basis of shows and movies like Star Trek and Star Wars, Babylon 5, The Expanse, and Battlestar Galactica (for those of you that are fans!). But here in reality, though we aren't a spacefaring race, we are looking at habitable planets to see if it would be possible to live there.

    8. Uranus
Let's head to our own solar system for a bit and talk about without a doubt the weirdest of our own nine planets (yes, I'm calling Pluto a planet, sue me.) Uranus is a bit of an oddball in numerous respects, not the least of which is because of its name, which has been the butt of many jokes...ok, had to get it out of the way! I'll move on.

    7. 55 Cancri E
Not all planets have simple names, especially the farther they are from Earth, and through that logic I give you 55 Cancri E. What sets this planet apart from the others in the universe? Well, it is a planet that is mostly diamond. But, it wasn't born that way.

    6. J1407b
When I say the word Saturn, what do you picture? More than likely, you think about our 6th planet, and just as likely, you think about the rings that surround the planet. So what if I told you, that out there in the universe was a planet called Super Saturn, one that had rings that were much, MUCH bigger than our own Saturn. What would you picture then?

    5. KELT-9b
In our universe, there are hot planets, cold planets, really hot planets, really cold planets, and then, there's KELT-9b. Why does KELT-9b stand out? Because it's literally the HOTTEST exoplanet to every be discovered within our universe, and that's saying something. But while it is something that is helping it stand out, it's also a big detriment to the planet.

    4. TrES-2b
The composition of planets is one of the things that make them the most interesting. So imagine finding a planet that has such a dense and unique composition that it doesn't reflect any light...at all. This is the planet known as TrES-2b. TrES-2b is so dark, and is so non-reflective that it is documented as the darkest planet ever observed. How dark does that mean?

    3. WASP-17b
WASP-17b is a planet of contradictions, which makes it strange in its own outright way, but when you delve into what makes it so contradictory, the strangeness amplifies. First and foremost, the way the planet orbits the sun is opposite than the direction that pretty much all planets go in when orbiting their parent stars. Seriously, no other planet (at this time) has been observed going opposite like this.

    2. Kepler-16b
In Star Wars: A New Hope, one of the most iconic scenes of the film (and arguably the franchise) is the shot of Luke Skywalker looking out across the planet Tatooine and seeing two suns' in the sky. This Binary Sunset scene helped set the tone for the film. And it left many fans wondering, Is there such a planet in the universe? The answer is yes, and it's called Kepler-16b.

    1. HD 189733b
There are many dangers in the universe, and some are dangerous in ways that are odd even to those who watch sci-fi films and shows. A perfect example of this is HD 189733b. For this is a planet that rains glass...sideways. Oh yeah. How is this all possible? Well, the glass itself comes from the atmosphere, which has a high concentrate of silica.

  • The Strangest Exoplanets Ever Found in the Universe

    5:59

Exoplanets are planets that lie beyond our own solar system and revolve around other stars many light years away. In the past two decades, thousands have been discovered, most of them with NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope. Many of these planets take the namesake of this telescope – the Kepler-10b was one of the first confirmed terrestrial planets to be discovered outside of our solar system. It is incredibly close to its star the Kepler 10. The discovery of this planet excited scientists as it was the first confirmation of an exoplanet.

  • The Strangest Exoplanets In The Universe

    12:48

The search for extra-terrestrial life or SETI is an organisation devoted to find evidences of life on other planets. To do so scientists study other planets or sometimes called exoplanets. Exoplanets are hard to detect but we have discovered quite a few of them in the recent years. The discovery of exoplanets has intensified interest in the search for extraterrestrial life.

There is special interest in planets that orbit in a star's habitable zone, where it is possible for liquid water, a prerequisite for life on Earth, to exist on the surface.
Today we are going to talk about two such planets that seem to defy the laws of physics and even change our perspective of planets by telling us something new. These are Gliese 436b and Tres-2b.

Space is full of wonders whose discoveries have always left us wondering. It never fails to bring out the exceptionally weird yet amazing discovery to our knowledge. In all these explorations and discoveries the vivid interest of astronomers led to the discovery of a weird yet astonishing exoplanet which is approximately 31.8 light-years away and is called GLIESE436b otherwise known as GJ436b.

It is a Neptune-sized exoplanet towards the constellation Leo, discovered in August 2004 by R Paul Buttler and Geoffrey Marcy. Transit observations led to the determination of its exact mass and radius, both of which are very similar to that of Neptune, making Gliese 436b the smallest known transiting extra solar planet. They used a method called the Radial Velocity Method which locates an extraterrestrial body by observing how its gravitational pull makes the parent star appear to shift and bend. Even though the planet is huge, it is too compact and is considered as warm-Neptune as it's similar in size but closer to its star than Neptune is to the Sun. This planet resides very close to gliese436, just about 4 million kilometres away and is at least 6 billion years old which the astronomers do not guarantee. They may or may not be older than this. Lately, the astronomers and scientists have discovered some weird and wild stuffs which is why it won't be surprising or shocking to know in the near future that there's a planet where the rain drops are of diamonds or some other amusing facts such as the day is brighter than the sun and nights are darker than the coal.

Nevertheless, one such amazing fact about this planet is that this planet consists of a ginormous layer of water which is in its solid form. To put it in simple words, we can say that it is made of excruciatingly hot ice. The kind of ice which is hotter than the fire itself. However, the ice on the surface of Gliese436b is not normal ice like we have on Earth. The temperature on this planet is almost up to 440 °C which is equal to the temperature of normal fire comparatively. Under this temperature, it is impossible for water to turn into ice or freeze. But this is where our knowledge takes a sleek twist, as far as we know, any liquid takes the shape of an ice when the molecules within that liquid come together to form a strong bond and molecules come together only when the temperature is less else forcefully by implementing pressure and bringing them close. The same happens on this planet too. On Gliese 436 B hydrogen, carbon monoxide, helium and methane are found in abundance. The atmospheric pressure on this planet is so much that oxygen breaks from carbon monoxide and gets separated then combines with 2 hydrogen atoms and forms H2O molecules which in simple words is termed as WATER which is found in abundance on our planet Earth.

  • A Strange Exoplanet Similar to the Long-Sought Planet Nine has been detected.

    3:04

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has discovered an 11-Jupiter-mass exoplanet called HD106906 b that occupies an unlikely orbit around a double star 336 light-years away. This planet may be offering clues to something that might be much closer to home: a hypothesized distant member of our Solar System dubbed “Planet Nine.” This is the first time that astronomers have been able to measure the motion of a massive Jupiter-like planet that is orbiting very far away from its host stars and visible debris disc.

Space is unbelievably strange. The Universe is filled with strange planets and systems that we can barely dream of. Since the early days of exoplanet discoveries, astronomers have confirmed more than 4000 exoplanets so far. These are just small fraction of hundreds of billions of planets in the Milky Way Galaxy.

There are planets with rings bigger than Saturn's, planets literally being torn apart and planets with burning ice! In this video we take a look at five of the strangest exoplanets discovered so far.

*NOTE* This video contains an error. At 0:54 an animation representing the radial velocity method for finding exoplanets is incorrect. Here is a link to a correct representation

Astronomers have discovered evidence of a small, rocky planet orbiting our nearest star – and it may even be a bit like Earth. Nobody knows whether the planet, called Proxima b, could ever sustain life. The little planet orbits our sun’s nearest neighbouring star, Proxima Centauri, making it the closest exoplanet ever found.
