  • Inside NASAs Last Moon Mission

    20:19

On December 7, 1972, NASA launched Apollo 17, a lunar mission crewed by Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans, and Harrison Schmitt. It would be the last time humans traveled beyond low Earth orbit, the last time man landed on another celestial body, and the last time man went to the moon. The Last Steps uses rare, heart-pounding footage and audio to retrace the record-setting mission. A film by Todd Douglas Miller.

This is a Great Big Film -- one of our tales of pioneers, dreamers, and innovators so extraordinary, we had to go deeper to connect to the full scope of the story. Come with us to the cutting edge of achievement.

  • Apollo 17: The Untold Story of the Last Men on the Moon

    4:07

    1 x 55'

On the 25th May 1961, President John F. Kennedy of the United States of America committed the resources of his nation and launched PROJECT APOLLO - the greatest technological undertaking in the history of mankind. But in 1972, only two years after Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, public and political interest in Apollo had dwindled. NASA was forced to cancel their last three missions, making Apollo 17 man's final mission to the moon.

Astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans were the three brave men chosen to fly NASA's final mission. They have been written up in history books and acknowledged by the space and scientific communities, but have never received the public recognition they truly deserved. Apollo 17's voyage to the moon was the crowning glory of man's lunar exploration.

This documentary features spectacular NASA footage and exclusive interviews with space scientists who worked on the Apollo programme during the 60's and 70's. This is the remarkable story of the determination and courage of a generation. A tribute to three brave astronauts and the thousands of men and women behind them during the final days of NASA's Apollo program.

  • Apollo 11’s ‘third astronaut’ reveals secrets from dark side of the moon | 60 Minutes Australia

    13:11

This year marks the 50th anniversary of that remarkable feat of technology and daring. And while the moonwalkers, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, dominate our memories of the moon landing, there’s a third astronaut who deserves his place in history. Michael Collins piloted the Apollo 11 command module spacecraft in lunar orbit while his two colleagues collected moon rocks. In a rare interview he tells Sarah Abo if it wasn’t for him, one of our greatest successes would have been a monumental failure.

  • True Stories about the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

    8:29

Fifty years ago, Apollo 11 began its voyage into American history. And if you've ever had questions about it - we have 5 answers for you! (and they're really weird).

The Saturn V rocket carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:32 a.m. on July 16, 1969 — and just four days later, man first set foot on the moon. The moon mission was a milestone in human history. But it was also a groundbreaking moment in broadcast television, as CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite brought the frontier of space to living rooms across America.

  • NASA Reflects on Legacy of Gene Cernan, Last Man to Walk on Moon

    7:21

Former NASA astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, died Monday, Jan. 16, following ongoing health issues, according to a statement from his family.

It is with very deep sadness that we share the loss of our beloved husband and father,” said Cernan’s family. “Our family is heartbroken, of course, and we truly appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. Gene, as he was known by so many, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.”
“Even at the age of 82, Gene was passionate about sharing his desire to see the continued human exploration of space and encouraged our nation's leaders and young people to not let him remain the last man to walk on the Moon, the family continued.

Cernan, a Captain in the U.S. Navy, left his mark on the history of exploration by flying three times in space, twice to the moon. He also holds the distinction of being the second American to walk in space and the last human to leave his footprints on the lunar surface.

The following is a statement from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on the passing of the Gemini and Apollo astronaut:

“Gene Cernan, Apollo astronaut and the last man to walk on the moon, has passed from our sphere, and we mourn his loss. Leaving the moon in 1972, Cernan said, ‘As I take these last steps from the surface for some time into the future to come, I’d just like to record that America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow.’ Truly, America has lost a patriot and pioneer who helped shape our country's bold ambitions to do things that humankind had never before achieved.”

According to the family, details regarding services will be announced in the coming days.

Note: package may include some silent video.

  • Restored Apollo 11 Moonwalk - Original NASA EVA Mission Video - Walking on the Moon

    3:2:31

Original Mission Video as aired in July 1969 depicting the Apollo 11 astronauts conducting several tasks during extravehicular activity (EVA) operations on the surface of the moon. The EVA lasted approximately 2.5 hours with all scientific activities being completed satisfactorily. The Apollo 11 (EVA) began at 10:39:33 p.m. EDT on July 20, 1969 when Astronaut Neil Armstrong emerged from the spacecraft first. While descending, he released the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly on the Lunar Module's descent stage. A camera on this module provided live television coverage of man's first step on the Moon. On this, their one and only EVA, the astronauts had a great deal to do in a short time. During this first visit to the Moon, the astronauts remained within about 100 meters of the lunar module, collected about 47 pounds of samples, and deployed four experiments. After spending approximately 2 hours and 31 minutes on the surface, the astronauts ended the EVA at 1:11:13 a.m. EDT on July 21.

  • Hear Buzz Aldrin tell the story of the first Moon landing

    10:11

Buzz Aldrin was the second man to set foot on the Moon. In February 2016 Aldrin came to the Science Museum in London to tell the story of the historic mission in his own words.

On 16 July 1969, Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on its way to becoming the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon. Aboard were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin - the three brave men who made the historic journey. On 20 July, Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon and Aldrin joined him on the lunar surface soon after. The Moon walk lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours while the pair collected lunar samples and conducted experiments.

  • Apollo 11: Landing on the Moon

    2:37

On July 20, 1969, humans walked on another world for the first time in history, achieving the goal that President John F. Kennedy had set in 1961, before Americans had even orbited the Earth. After a landing that included dodging a lunar crater and boulder field just before touchdown, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the area around their lunar landing site for more than two hours.

When the lunar module landed at 4:17 p.m EDT, only 30 seconds of fuel remained. Armstrong radioed Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed. Mission control erupted in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again.

  • The Mind Bending Story Of Quantum Physics | Spark

    58:56

Professor Jim Al-Khalili traces the story of arguably the most important, accurate and yet perplexing scientific theory ever: quantum physics.

The story of quantum physics starts at the beginning of the 20th century with scientists trying to better understand how light bulbs work. This simple question soon led scientists deep into the hidden workings of matter, into the sub-atomic building blocks of the world around us. Here they discovered phenomena unlike any encountered before - a realm where things can be in many places at once, where chance and probability call the shots and where reality appears to only truly exist when we observe it.

Albert Einstein hated the idea that nature, at its most fundamental level, is governed by chance. Jim reveals how in the 1930's, Einstein thought he'd found a fatal flaw in quantum physics. This was not taken seriously until it was tested in the 1960s. Professor Al-Khalili repeats this critical experiment, posing the question does reality really exist, or do we conjure it into existence by the act of observation?

Elsewhere, we explore how the most famous law of quantum physics – The Uncertainty Principle – is obeyed by plants and trees as they capture sunlight during the vital process of photosynthesis. Could quantum mechanics explain the greatest mystery in biology - evolution?

    Lyrics:

You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold.
    All the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.

You say you'll give me a highway with no-one on it
Treasure, just to look upon it
All the riches in the night.

You say you'll give me eyes in the moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
    A harbour in the tempest.
All the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave
When all I need is you.

You say you want your love to work out right
To last with me through the night.

You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
    Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold.
All the promises we break, from the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you.

  • Apollo 17: The Untold Story of the Last Men on the Moon - Trailer

    4:09

On the 25th May 1961, President John F. Kennedy of the United States of America committed the resources of his nation and launched PROJECT APOLLO - the greatest technological undertaking in the history of mankind. But in 1972, only two years after Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, public and political interest in Apollo had dwindled. NASA was forced to cancel their last three missions, making Apollo 17 man’s final mission to the moon.

Astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans were the three brave men chosen to fly NASA’s final mission. They have been written up in history books and acknowledged by the space and scientific communities, but have never received the public recognition they truly deserved. Apollo 17's voyage to the moon was the crowning glory of man’s lunar exploration.

This documentary features spectacular NASA footage and exclusive interviews with space scientists who worked on the Apollo programme during the 60’s and 70’s. This is the remarkable story of the determination and courage of a generation. A tribute to three brave astronauts and the thousands of men and women behind them during the final days of NASA’s Apollo program.

When you watch the new documentary film, Apollo 11, you see a lot of shots we’ve all seen before. But different. The footage looks so crisp, vibrant, and distinct. But why? How did this happen, and why did it take 50 years for us to get this footage and be able to enjoy it in this quality? Well, the short answer is a mixture of luck, lack of technology, and just good timing. In this video, we’re going to explore how this footage came about, why it went away, and who is responsible for it.

  • CHM Live | Silicon Valley: The Untold Story

    1:20:01

    [Recorded January 17, 2018]

Around the world, people want to know what it is about Silicon Valley that has made it a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship for decades. Silicon Valley: The Untold Story, a new three-part documentary airing in March on the Science Channel, will uncover the story. The Computer History Museum is hosting a premiere event with a panel discussion featuring participants in the film, including WhatsApp cofounder Jan Koum, technology entrepreneur Kim Polese, DFJ venture capitalist Heidi Roizen, and award-winning director Michael Schwarz. They will provide their own unique takes on the Valley, discuss brief clips from film segments, and answer questions from the audience. A screening of the first segment in the series, Secret Sauce, will follow the panel.

The series provides television's first comprehensive look at the century-and-a-half history of this fascinating region. It includes interviews with such key Valley figures as Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum, and Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt, as well as with leading historians. The first hour explores the unique mix of ingredients-the secret sauce-that fueled the Valley's rise to becoming the world's technological and economic powerhouse. The second hour examines the forces-including government and military funding-that have made the Valley a magnet for innovators from all over the world. And the third hour charts the circuitous paths and lucky accidents that lie behind some of the Valley's greatest success stories, and reveals that even in a place celebrated for inventing the future, no one can really predict it. The series is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Computer History Museum is the community and educational outreach partner for the project.
