  • A Plane Disappeared And Landed 37 Years Later

What would you do if you went on a vacation to another city and suddenly found yourself in another country altogether? Most of us would be confused. Even the most reckless of adventurers would at least raise an eyebrow if told they’d flown for close to half a century.

On July 2, 1955, Pan American Flight 914 made its way from New York to Miami, Florida. It was a fine sunny day, and 57 passengers on board the plane were looking forward to seeing the warm beaches and palm trees of Florida. The plane took off without trouble, but 3 hours later, when it should’ve already landed at the destination airport, it was nowhere to be seen. When air traffic control contacted the New York tower, they got a perplexing reply: Flight 914 just disappeared from the radars in mid-air.

    Music by Epidemic Sound

    - On July 2, 1955, Pan American Flight 914 made its way from New York to Miami, Florida. It was a fine sunny day, and 57 passengers on board the plane were looking forward to seeing the warm beaches and palm trees of Florida.
    - Everything indicated that the plane was lost: apart from having vanished from the radars, air traffic control couldn’t get through to the pilots with the radio.
    - Eventually, although the case was never really solved, there was an official statement that the plane crashed, taking the lives of everyone on board.
    - Change of scenery. It’s now September 9, 1992, and we’re in Caracas, Venezuela. It’s a perfectly normal day for Juan de la Corte, air traffic controller at the Caracas airport.
    - Seemingly out of nowhere, a new dot appeared on the radar. It was as if an aircraft had just popped up from nothingness, or as if it had been hiding from the radar and now decided to show up.
    - In less than 10 minutes, the culprit showed up in the field of vision. At first it looked to the air traffic control like an ordinary airplane, but as it got closer, they could see that it was, in fact, very oldю
    - The real confusion began when the pilot of the mysterious aircraft contacted the tower and asked in English, “Where are we?”
    - The pilot said his flight was scheduled to land at the Miami airport at 9.55 am on July 2, 1955. Now it was time for the tower to fall into silence.
    - Ground units were immediately called to assist the plane and the passengers, and it landed without trouble. Having relaxed a little bit, Juan finally decided to ask something that bothered him. “Do you know today is May 21, 1992?”
    - Juan heard the flight captain’s panicky voice saying, “No! Stay away! We’re leaving now!” And indeed, he started the engines again and, without waiting for take-off clearance, taxied the plane to the runway.
    - There’s much dispute about the credibility of this event. Back in 1985, a tabloid called Weekly World News was the first to cover this story.
    - However, the legend still lives, and many sources retell it in their own way. Some even go as far as to say that the passengers of the plane eventually returned to their homes.
    - One thing that keeps popping up on the Internet and piquing the interest of paranormal enthusiasts is a small pocket calendar that somehow was left on the Caracas airport runway when the notorious plane took off.

  • Malaysian leader: Debris found on island is from Flight 370

YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- A piece of a wing found washed up on Reunion Island last week is from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that vanished last year, Malaysia's prime minister announced early Thursday, saying he hoped the news would end the unspeakable uncertainty of the passengers' families. The disappearance of the Boeing 777 jetliner 515 days ago while on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, has been one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history. Officials believed it crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, killing all 239 people aboard, but it is still unknown why the plane went down. It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts has conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed MH370, Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters. The French territory is thousands of miles from the area being searched for wreckage from the flight. U.S. and French officials involved in the investigation were more cautious, stopping short of full confirmation but saying it made sense that the metal piece of the wing, known as the flaperon, came from Flight 370. Intact and encrusted with barnacles, the flaperon was found on a beach and sent to France for scrutiny by the French civil aviation investigation department known by its acronym BEA, and members from its Malaysian and Australian counterparts. We now have physical evidence that, as I announced on 24th March last year, flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean, Najib said. The burden and uncertainty faced by the families during this time has been unspeakable. It is my hope that this confirmation, however tragic and painful, will at least bring certainty to the families and loved ones of the 239 people onboard MH370. They have our deepest sympathy and prayers, he said. At a news conference in Paris, Deputy Prosecutor Serge Mackowiak didn't outright confirm that the debris belonged to Flight 370 but said there were strong indications that it was the case. The very strong conjectures are to be confirmed by complementary analysis that will begin tomorrow morning, Mackowiak said. The experts are conducting their work as fast as they can in order to give complete and reliable information as quickly as possible. A U.S. official familiar with the investigation said the flaperon clearly is from a Boeing 777. However, a team of experts in France examining the part hadn't yet been able to find anything linking it specifically to the missing plane, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because there was no authorization to talk publicly about the case. With no other 777s or flaperons known to be missing, it makes sense that the part comes from Flight 370, but the U.S. and Boeing team members are merely trying to be precise, the official said. Analysts say the investigators will examine the metal with high-powered microscopes to gain insight into what caused the plane to go down. It is also not known why Flight 370 - less than an hour into the journey - turned back from its original flight path and headed in an opposite direction before turning left and flying south over the Indian Ocean for hours. Malaysia Airlines said in a statement that relatives of the passengers and crew have already been informed and we extend our deepest sympathies to those affected. The statement said the finding was indeed a major breakthrough for us in resolving the disappearance of MH370. We expect and hope that there would be more objects to be found which would be able to help resolve this mystery. Jacquita Gomes, the wife of crew member Patrick Gomes, said she was informed by the airline of the news about a half-hour before Najib's announcement. Now that they have confirmed it as MH370, I know my husband is no longer of this world but they just can't leave it with this one flaperon. We urge them to continue searching until they find the plane and bring it back, she said. We still need to know what happened. They still need to find the plane. They still need to find the black box to get the truth out, she said. It brings some sort of closure but not a complete closure. We don't know what happened and where the plane went down. It's not over yet. Gomes said she hopes to get her husband's body back so that the family can give him a proper burial and say goodbye. She said she watched the announcement on TV with one of her daughters, while her youngest child, a 15-year-old son, was asleep. My son doesn't know yet that his dad is really gone, that he won't be back, she said, in tears. I will have to tell him tomorrow before he goes to school. Highly technical efforts to extrapolate the jet's final hours before it would have run out of fuel gave force to the theory that it went down somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. No one is certain why the plane deviated so f

  • Algonquin College Speaker Series - Larry Vance

Author and professional aircraft accident investigator, Larry Vance, shares the details on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, with 239 people on board, and how it disappeared into the dark of the night, never to be heard from again. The disappearance of MH370 has been described as the “greatest mystery in the history of aviation“. Despite the efforts of an international investigation team, and millions of dollars spent searching the ocean bottom for the wreckage site, no one has been able to determine what really happened.

In his new book, veteran Canadian aviation investigator and first-time author, Larry Vance, pieces together what he believes happened to flight 370. For this book, three professional accident investigators, each with decades of real-world experience in crash dynamics, examined the available evidence. Their conclusions form the basis of Vance’s book, entitled, “MH370: Mystery Solved.”

Larry Vance is a professional aircraft accident investigator, and a member of the HVS Aviation Consultancy Group, based in Ottawa, Canada. His background includes 34 years in aircraft accident investigation; 24 of those years with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), and 10 years with HVS Aviation.

While with the TSB, he was assigned as investigator-in-charge (IIC) of more than 200 aviation accidents. He was also named as Canadian Accredited Representative for numerous high-profile international investigations. Along with IIC duties, he also participated as a specialist investigator in hundreds of other investigations involving a wide range of aircraft types from small single-engine aircraft to large airline-type aircraft.

With HVS Aviation, and its predecessor Accident Investigation & Research (AIR), Larry works both domestic and international cases. He is responsible for conducting independent investigations to be used in conflict resolution and litigation.

Larry’s pilot experience involves more than 40 years as an Airline Transport Rated professional pilot, with over 12,000 flight hours on various aircraft types.

From its takeoff, to the mysteries behind it, and more, join me as we explore the vanishing of Flight 370 and its mystery.
This particular flight was in route to Beijing, China and was going over the Indian Ocean when it suddenly and inexplicably altered course from its targeted path. Not long after, it vanished from all radars with no word or reason as to why. The plane had 239 passengers on it, plus the crew.
Springing into action, a search for the missing plane began based on the last known coordinates of the craft. But no matter how far they searched, whether it was above the water or below, they couldn't find anything. It was the most costly search in aviation history. This was mainly because the information about the plane and its whereabouts couldn't be fully trusted. So the search parameters continued to grow.
Despite multiple searches, and debris of the ship washing up on shores of various nearby landmasses, the plane itself in its entirety, or fragments, have not been found. Even with the searches going well into 2018. The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 remains a major mystery in aviation.
But let's dive deeper into this, shall we? Let's look into what really happened, and all the true mysteries that continue to surround it.
One of the biggest things that needs to be noted about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is that this was a very basic and routine flight. One that had been done many times before. It was a night flight, and was set to take passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China. The flight on average would've taken around 6 hours.
And yet, as we obviously noted, it didn't land there. And to this day in 2020 we still don't know where the plane is, what exactly happened to it, and more. There is so little information that it's become one of the greatest mysteries in history, and especially in the last 10 years. What happened to Flight 370? And just as important, how could something like this happen in the technologically advanced age that we live in right now?
The flight as noted was a routine flight no matter what way you choose to look at it. In fact, Malaysia Airlines ran this particular flight twice a day. Which means that the people flying these craft were not only certified, they knew what to expect, and would've known if something was very wrong.
The plane itself was a Boeing 777, and was a very competent craft. It had 11 years of experience and this was the craft that made the trips to Beijing and back on the regular. There had been no previous incidents with the craft at all, and it had no history of issues. In short, this was a craft and airline that knew how to take care of its planes, and thus something like this happening to them is beyond odd.
In terms of fuel, the craft had nearly 8 hours worth of fuel for a flight that wouldn't even take six. While this may seem like overkill, the intention was that SHOULD something go wrong, they could make a key diversion and go to whatever land mass was closest to them in order to land and obviously protect all the people on board. But again...that didn't happen.
Could it have been the fault of the crew? That's very unlikely. The crew of Flight 370 was all Malaysian and veterans of their positions. Just in terms of the pilot, he had been a part of Malaysia Airlines since the 1980's and had over 18,000 logged flight time in the air. Making him not just a veteran, but one of the most experienced pilots you're likely to find.
Even if something had gone wrong with him, his co-pilot was experienced as well. He had been with the airline for 7 years and had over 2000 hours of flight time on his own. So combined, these two had decades of experiences and over 25000 hours of flight experience.
Now let's head to the flight and break it down step by step for a while. The flight itself was a bit late to takeoff. Instead of its usual time, it had a slight delay that made it launch at 12:42 am. As was standard procedure, after the liftoff the plane went and got confirmation from air traffic control to climb to 18,000 feet. It's also important to note that at this point in time both pilot and the co-pilot had radioed in and talked with air traffic control to prove that everything was going ok.
And for the first bit of the flight, that since of being ok was maintained, which was to be expected as again, this was a very basic flight.
Then, at 1:06 AM, things started to go wrong, but not in the overt way. When planes like these takeoff, they have systems that alert radar towers and air traffic control...

  • Missing Flight MH370: Piloted Trajectory

MH370 disappeared on March 8th, 2014. If the search for its wreck is unsuccessful, an alternative search area based on a plausible piloted trajectory deduced from the available Inmarsat data: Please find below the Video guidelines:
The 60 pages document on a MH370 plausible trajectory ( was not targeting mass medias, nor was the video illustrating the document. In its 5 minutes duration, there is so much information packed in this video that it deserves several replays. It is recommended to play it in real time first followed by several replays with freezes at the significant points.
The trajectory is divided in 3 parts. This is indicated on the upper left part of the screen.
    • Part 1 from ATC, Pilot and ACARS data
    • Part 2 from reconstructed radar data
    • Part 3 from Inmarsat satellite data

Part 3, as well as the last leg of the flight, have been deduced and flown with a flight simulator software using the aircraft LNAV capability i.e. by selecting pre-defined waypoints and altitudes in the aircraft navigation database then letting the navigation system optimise the speed vector along the trajectory

The borders of the seven FIR (Flight Information Regions with their names in black) are in orange.
Airways N571, P574, P627 and P756 are in violet, large enough to draw the attention and to show that the aircraft safely crossed them in between their authorized flight level in order to avoid collision with any potential traffic. Airway B466 is displayed in yellow, which was safely crossed above its maximum authorized level.
The 5 letters names of the waypoints are in bold white and since they are officially registered navigation points, their precise location is thus not displayed.

The limit of the Penang radar coverage is a light blue arc and the last known radar spot is at the intersection of this arc and airway N571. The aircraft flew at much as possible away from radar coverage.
The shadow of the aircraft, even if it was local nighttime, provides a sense of altitude.
The timeline at the bottom helps to understand the main events or provided data.
ACARS and IAS (Indicated Air Speed) acronyms understanding needs a minimum of technical knowledge as well as INMARSAT handshakes.
When the main electrical power was voluntarily switched off at 01h21, the aircraft became “invisible” to the controller and the Satellite Communications System was subsequently disabled. When the power was switched back on around 02h23, the Satellite Communications System reconnected by itself and received periodic connection status verifications every hour or so illustrated by the traveling white and green waves. These so-called handshakes provide information thanks to two sets of Satellite Communications mandatory recorded measurements: BTO (Burst Time Offset on Time) and BFO (Burst Frequency Offset on Frequency). At the time stamp of each of the 7 handshakes along the piloted trajectory, BTO and BFO were estimated. They match the corresponding original INMARSAT published values. This is why our trajectory is plausible

Cherry on the cake, on the upper right hand side, the fuel pump indicates the remaining air-fuel left in the aircraft tanks based on recognized-models’ computation. When the fuel is exhausted, the fumes behind the aircraft stop.

The end of the flight was most certainly an attempted ditching with an unsuccessful sea landing leading to a crash at relatively low speed.

  • Possible reasons behind Malaysian flight 370 disappearance

Originally published on March 10, 2014

The sudden disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 on March 7 has led to speculation on the cause of the accident. Aviations experts however have agreed that whatever happened, was quick and left the pilots no time to issue a distress call.

The main indicator of what happened will be the size of the plane's debris field. If it is large and spread out over tens of miles, the plane likely broke apart at a high elevation.

This would indicate the break up was the result of a bomb or massive airframe failure.

The fact that we are unable to find any debris so far appears to indicate that the aircraft is likely to have disintegrated at around 35,000 feet, a senior source involved in preliminary investigations was quoted by the South China Morning Post as saying.

US and European security officials have said there is no proof yet of foul play, but two passengers, and possibly more, were traveling with stolen passports, which raises questions about the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Whilst it is too soon to speculate about any connection between these stolen passports and the missing plane, it is clearly of great concern that any passenger was able to board an international flight using a stolen passport listed in Interpol's databases, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said in a statement.

However, no group has claimed responsibility for a possible attack, and other explanations could be given for the use of stolen passports.

A massive airframe failure also has been considered unlikely. Malaysia Airlines has a good safety record and Boeing 777-200ER is said to be one of the safest, the BBC reported.

The plane could also have broken up on contact with the water, which would indicate either engine failure, an attempted hijacking or even pilot suicide.

Is it too early however to know the exact cause of the accident.

In addition to the examination of debris, the recovery of the flight data and voice recorders could help investigators understand what really happened to flight 370.

  • Four years on, MH370 remains an unsolved mystery

The full investigation report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will be released after the latest search efforts are completed. Malaysia agreed in January to pay U.S. firm Ocean Infinity up to US$70mil if it found the plane during an offshore search effort that is underway and expected to end in June.

  • The Search for the MH370

After Flight MH370 disappeared in the Southern Ocean, Fugro was invited to help find the lost plane in a remote area covering 120,000 square kilometres in very challenging conditions.

Deploying specialist vessels, a multinational specialist crew and state-of-the-art technology, Fugro produced 3D terrain and texture maps and used deep tow sonar vehicles and AUVs to search for the wreckage.

The seafloor across the entire search area was mapped to a high level of accuracy and it became clear that flight MH370 had gone down elsewhere.

As the crew arrived back from their last trip back to port they were welcomed and thanked by government ministers from Malaysia, China and Australia

Fugro stands ready, if asked, to continue the search in new areas to finally bring closure for the families of the lost crew and passengers.
