The Way into Space - From Planet Earth to Infinity | SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW

  • The Way into Space - From Planet Earth to Infinity | SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW

    47:56

Even today, a rocket is still the only suitable means of transporting loads and people into orbit and beyond. Only with the help of a rocket can astronauts and supplies reach the International Space Station. Today satellites determine our lives. But it is only with the power of rockets that they can be launched - or probes advance into space to explore asteroids and the planets in our solar system.
Man’s curiosity drives him on and on. He wants to penetrate even deeper into the universe - to the boundaries of our solar system and beyond - but this calls for totally new propulsion systems: new technologies engineers and scientists are already working on.

  • Departure to Mars - Conquest of a Planet | SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW

    50:16

SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW: August the 2nd, 2048. A space craft has just reached Mars. The crew has landed on the Red Planet: One giant leap for mankind. Seventy-nine years after the first moon landing man has set foot on another planet. This is a fictional scenario. But men on Mars will become a reality. We have known ever since the 1960s what it looks like on Mars. Dozens of probes have visited the Red Planet and sent back photographs and data. There have been reports of storms and barren deserts. In the end we are left with more questions than answers - especially the burning question of life, past or present, on our neighbour planet.
Only a manned mission to Mars will solve the riddle once and for all, when scientists and engineers research the Red Planet on the spot.

  • Journey to a Black Hole - Uncovering a Mystery | SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW

    47:29

We are surrounded by an intangible infinity: a universe in which the Earth is merely a grain of sand on the shore of an ocean. But we are unravelling more and more of the secrets of the universe which surrounds us. And that includes black holes, bottomless pits like the jaws of hell which devour all material that comes too close to them. Even light has no chance of escaping from them. But how does a Black Hole form? Are there any near us? And can they pose a threat to us? A look at the universe presents us with pictures of fascinating and confusing beauty: landscapes of light and gas and stardust, formed by cosmic wind and radiation. Our telescopes are discovering more and more wonders of the universe. They are looking far out into space and thus far back into the past. The centre of our galaxy is marked by a super-heavy Black Hole: an astronomical object with an inconceivable gravitational pull. Nothing can escape from it. The black hole at the centre of our galaxy is known as Sagittarius A-star. Of enormous size, it devours everything while remaining totally invisible.

    48:59

Space Science Episode 4: Planets - the search for a new world
Not until 2015 was this promising exoplanet tracked down by NASA telescopes. The geophysical characteristics indicate Earth-like temperatures and even water in liquid form is likely. Meanwhile, astrophysicists suspect a solar system similar to ours around each star; discovering more and more Earth-like celestial bodies. Physicist Prof. Dr. Ulrich Walter explains in this episode of Spacetime, the dynamics involved in the search for extraterrestrial life today.

With the global pandemic of Covid 19 still encompassing the word, we are generally not big fans of viruses right now. But we sure are thinking about them a lot. That’s right, even astrophysicists are pondering these bizarre little critters. In fact, astrovirology, although very new, is actually an emerging subfield of astrobiology. And that’s because it turns out viruses don’t just influence organisms - they’re incredibly important on a planetary scale. Perhaps an interplanetary scale.

When Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 launched into space in 1977, their mission was to explore the outer solar system, and over the following decade, they did so admirably.

With an 8-track tape memory system and onboard computers that are thousands of times weaker than the phone in your pocket, the two spacecraft sent back an immense amount of imagery and information about the four gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

But NASA knew that after the planetary tour was complete, the Voyagers would remain on a trajectory toward interstellar space, having gained enough velocity from Jupiter's gravity to eventually escape the grasp of the sun. Since they will orbit the Milky Way for the foreseeable future, the Voyagers should carry a message from their maker, NASA scientists decided.

The Voyager team tapped famous astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan to compose that message. Sagan's committee chose a copper phonograph LP as their medium, and over the course of six weeks they produced the Golden Record: a collection of sounds and images that will probably outlast all human artifacts on Earth.

  • Outer Space: Time to Shine, The Moon Song by StoryBots | Netflix Jr

    1:59

The moon is bright and its rap's all right! When the sun goes down, it's definitely the moon's time to shine.

The StoryBots are curious little creatures who live beneath our screens, offering a world of learning and fun for kids. The Emmy Award-winning “Ask the StoryBots” is now streaming on Netflix!

    Lyrics:

    Time to Shine

    (Looking at some controls)
Preparing to land our spacecraft on the Moon.

    Houston, we have a song.

    CHORUS
    It's my time to shine
    It's my time to shine
    The day's over now
So it's my time to shine

    MOON:
    Good evening, it's the Moon
Here to regale you with a tune
I'm so bright up in the sky at night
But the truth is I'm just reflecting light
See lemme help you break it down
The Earth and I are spinning around
And I orbit the Earth in a loop

EARTH: You see, the moon is kinda like my hula hoop

    MOON:
We both orbit the sun; he's the big shot

THE SUN: I'm the center of the solar system, I'm so hot

    MOON:
The sun's like a lightbulb and I'm like a mirror
Light bounces off me and then it appears
To the Earth below for a lovely view
For animals like wolves who go Awhooooooo!
Sometimes I'm full, sometimes half on
Sometimes I'm crescent, or it looks like I'm gone
But I'm here in the dark, just a lonely moon
Hoping that somebody will visit me soon
I'm covered in dust and I'm made of rock
So come see me soon and go on a moonwalk

MOON: It's my time to shine
    It's my time to shine

    Both at day

    And at night

We can see the moon shine

MOON: It's my time to shine
    It's my time to shine

I'm planting this flag on the mountain I climbed. One small step for a StoryBot

    One giant leap for Storybotkind

This video gives an impression of how common planets are around the stars in the Milky Way. The planets, their orbits and their host stars are all vastly magnified compared to their real separations. A six-year search that surveyed millions of stars using the microlensing technique concluded that planets around stars are the rule rather than the exception. The average number of planets per star is greater than one. This means that there is likely to be a minimum of 1,500 planets within just 50 light-years of Earth.

  • The Beginning of Everything -- The Big Bang

    5:55

    How did everything get started?

Has the universe a beginning or was it here since forever? Well, evidence suggests that there was indeed a starting point to this universe we are part of right now. But how can this be? How can something come from nothing? And what about time? We don't have all the answers yet so let's talk about what we know.

Also, we try to make this one not depressing. Tell us if we succeeded.

BY THE WAY. We have a website now. We'll try to blog from time to time, show you guys how we make the videos and give more insight to our process. Also we sell stuff. We really don't know where this whole kurzgesagt stuff leads us. But we are really thankful for all the attention and positive feedback and yeah, maybe we can make this our jobs -- it would be pretty nice and we could do more content each month. But we'll see. For now, thank you very much everybody for making this little adventure possible.

  • Outer Space: We are the Planets, The Solar System Song by StoryBots | Netflix Jr

    1:59

Let the StoryBots DJ revolve it with sweet beats as the rapping sun and planets give you their spin on the whole solar system.

The StoryBots are curious little creatures who live beneath our screens, offering a world of learning and fun for kids. The Emmy Award-winning “Ask the StoryBots” is now streaming on Netflix!

    Lyrics:
We can see the whole solar system from here.

I think we can hear it from here, too.

    ALL PLANETS (CHORUS)
We are the planets of the solar system
    Different sizes for every one
    The music never ends
    We are such good friends
And we all orbit the sun

    SUN
Here comes the Sun rapping first on this track, from the beginning
I'm the center of the solar system, planets be spinning
Around me, so hot, I'm roasting, ya see?
Now I pass the mic to the planet closest to me

    MERCURY
Mercury! The smallest planet, small as Earth's Moon
I get super hot and cold and I spin very slow

    VENUS
I'm Venus! I've got mountains and volcanoes that spray
I'm the same size as Earth but spin the opposite way

    EARTH
Yeah, I'm Earth, I'm the home to every boy and girl
(Sung by Stars) Such a beautiful, beautiful world

    MARS
I'm Mars, the red planet, I've got deserts and ice
And I've got two moons - nice - that's like one moon, twice!

    JUPITER
I'm Jupiter! The biggest planet, I'm humungous, gargantuan
I spin the fastest, rap the fastest, plus I'm handsome, BAM SON!

    SATURN
Oh please, I'm Saturn, check out my beautiful rings
Made up of billions of rocks, dust, and other things

    URANUS
I'm Uranus, I say that with pride, okay, I lied
I'm embarrassed 'cause I'm the only planet lying on its side

    NEPTUNE
I'm Neptune, I'm cold, dark, windy and mysterious
I'm very stormy, so bring an umbrella - I'm serious

    ALL PLANETS (CHORUS)
We're the planets in the solar system
    Different sizes for every one
    The music never ends
    We are such good friends
And we all orbit the sun

Well, we are done exploring the solar system.

I am thirsty. Let's explore the rest of the Milky Way galaxy.

    SETI – The Early Years

Perhaps life on Earth was the most impossible fluke, never to be repeated in the infinity of space. But on the balance of evidence one conclusion emerges. Conditions could’ve been the same on other planets billions of years before the birth of the Earth, which is a relative latecomer to the cosmic scene, and the Universe could be teaming with life far more advanced than our own.

So what if we ever do receive a message? Whether this becomes the day the Earth stands still, or the day it goes into a flat spin, will depend on how well we are prepared to deal with it. And what about “them”, they’re certainly smart, but are they peaceful or aggressive – should we take the risk and answer back?

  • The most detailed map of galaxies, black holes and stars ever made | Juna Kollmeier

    14:14

Humans have been studying the stars for thousands of years, but astrophysicist Juna Kollmeier is on a special mission: creating the most detailed 3-D maps of the universe ever made. Journey across the cosmos as she shares her team's work on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, imaging millions of stars, black holes and galaxies in unprecedented detail. If we maintain our pace, she says, we can map every large galaxy in the observable universe by 2060. We've gone from arranging clamshells to general relativity in a few thousand years, she says. If we hang on 40 more, we can map all the galaxies.

  • 2018 Reines Lecture: Exploring the Universe with Gravitational Waves by Kip Thorne

    1:20:58

The 2018 Reines Lecture was presented by Kip Thorne, winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for the detection of gravitational waves. The discovery, part of the LIGO experiment, validated Albert Einstein’s longstanding prediction that during cataclysmic events the fabric of spacetime can be stretched, sending gravitational tremors across the universe. Thorne is a graduate of Caltech and Princeton University. His research has focused on Einstein’s general theory of relativity and on astrophysics, and he is co-founder of the LIGO Project. Among his many distinctions, Thorne has been awarded the Albert Einstein Medal, the UNESCO Niels Bohr Gold Medal, the Common Wealth Award for Science, and was named California Scientists of the Year. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. In addition to his renowned scientific research in theoretical physics, he is involved in writing and movie production. Most notably, he worked on Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar.

Exploring the Universe with Gravitational Waves: From the Big Bang to Black Holes

There are two types of waves that can propagate across the universe: electromagnetic waves and gravitational waves. Galileo initiated electromagnetic astronomy 400 years ago by pointing a telescope at the sky and discovering the moons of Jupiter. LIGO recently initiated gravitational astronomy by observing gravitational waves from colliding black holes. Thorne will describe this discovery, the 50 year effort that led to it, and the rich explorations that lie ahead.

The Reines Lecture Series honors Frederick Reines, UCI’s Founding Dean of Physical Sciences and co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize for discovering the neutrino.

Astronomers have discovered a large Jupiter sized planet orbiting around a small red dwarf star. It’s the first time such a large planet has been seen orbiting such a low mass host star.

*Possible ancient ocean remnants found on Ceres
Scientists have detected widespread reserves of minerals containing water on the dwarf planet Ceres.
The discovery by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft suggests that the 945 kilometre wide world may have once had a global ocean and may still have liquid today.

    *The Rochechouart Astrobleme
Geologists have begun an intense core drilling campaign at Rochechouart in central France to study an astrobleme. The Rochechouart Astrobleme is thought to be the remains of a 20 to 30 kilometre wide 207 million year old impact crater.

*New clues to the origin of life on Earth
Chemists at The Scripps Research Institute have found a compound that may have been a crucial factor in the origins of life on Earth. Origins-of-life researchers have hypothesized that a chemical reaction called phosphorylation may have been crucial for the assembly of three key ingredients in early life forms:

  • A Journey to the Centre of the Sun - with Lucie Green

    54:50

Lucie Green takes us on a journey from the centre of the sun to planet earth in a run-down of the latest solar physics research.
    Watch the Q&A here:

Lucie's book 15 Million Degrees: A Journey to the Centre of the Sun is available to buy now -

110 times wider than Earth; 15 million degrees at its core; an atmosphere so huge that Earth is actually within it: come and meet the star of our solar system.

Light takes eight minutes to reach Earth from the surface of the Sun. But its journey within the Sun takes hundreds of thousands of years. What is going on in there? What are light and heat? How does the Sun produce them and how on earth did scientists discover this? Since the Royal Institution was founded in 1799 our knowledge of the Sun has changed dramatically and much of the work was carried out at the Ri.

Join Lucie Green for an enlightening talk, taking you from inside the Sun to its surface and to Earth, to discover how the Sun works, how a solar storm can threaten the modern technology that society relies on and more of the latest research in solar physics.

Lucie Green is a Professor of Physics based at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL’s Department of Space and Climate Physics. She studies activity in the atmosphere of our nearest star, the Sun. In particular, she looks at immense magnetic fields in the Sun’s atmosphere which sporadically erupt into the Solar System.

Lucie is very active in public engagement with science, regularly giving public talks and appearing on TV shows like Sky at Night.

  • Planet X: The new planet in our solar system?

    1:51

Two scientists claim they have the best evidence yet showing there’s a ninth planet at the outer edge of our Solar System. Called Planet X, it would be about 10 times the mass of Earth and orbit around the Sun once every 10,000 to 20,000 years. The only problem with the theory? We haven’t actually seen this planet yet.
