Rising inequality and growing political instability are the direct result of decades of bad economic theory, says entrepreneur Nick Hanauer. In a visionary talk, he dismantles the mantra that greed is good -- an idea he describes as not only morally corrosive, but also scientifically wrong -- and lays out a new theory of economics powered by reciprocity and cooperation.

  • Beware, fellow plutocrats, the pitchforks are coming | Nick Hanauer

    20:27

Nick Hanauer is a rich guy, an unrepentant capitalist — and he has something to say to his fellow plutocrats: Wake up! Growing inequality is about to push our societies into conditions resembling pre-revolutionary France. Hear his argument about why a dramatic increase in minimum wage could grow the middle class, deliver economic prosperity ... and prevent a revolution.

  • Nick Hanauer on building a more equitable American economy | Ideas We Should Steal Festival 2020

    19:19

Capitalism can and should lift all boats. That was the gist of plutocrat venture capitalist Nick Hanauer’s conversation with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi at The Philadelphia Citizen’s third annual Ideas We Should Steal Festival™ presented by Comcast NBCUniversal.

Hanauer, the earliest non-family investor in Amazon, is a capitalist—and a successful one at that. But he is disdainful of the way capitalism has enriched a few at the expense of millions of Americans—something that prompted his push for a $15 minimum wage in his hometown of Seattle, and that he explores at length in his podcast, Pitchfork Economics.

“It is ridiculous to believe that capitalism, that markets, are a good economic system and also believe that somehow the system will come tumbling down if companies are required to pay their workers enough to live in dignity and security,” Hanauer told Velshi. “Claiming that when jobs grow, jobs shrink is like saying when plants grow animals shrink. That’s not the way it works.”

Instead, Hanauer encourages a more equitable system of distributing wealth—which, he claims, is a more natural way to be: “Being reciprocal and cooperative is humanity’s economic superpower.”

In the face of three simultaneous crises -- health, the economy and climate -- do we have a chance to do capitalism differently? Economist Mariana Mazzucato explains why we shouldn't try to go back to normal after the pandemic but should instead rethink how governments work together with businesses to solve big problems. Learn more about how governments can play a dynamic, proactive role in shaping markets and sparking innovation -- instead of just responding to broken systems. • Can we Fix Capitalism? Yanis Varoufakis vs Gillian Tett

    1:27:15

Yanis Varoufakis and Gilian Tett came to the Intelligence Squared stage in a conversation chaired by Anne McElvoy, to debate whether capitalism is broken and if it needs to be fixed. Tett and Varoufakis both agree that the current model of capitalism needs to change but they differ radically in the solutions they proffer.

Gillian Tett is the pioneering columnist who has spent the last decade documenting the rise of ‘conscious capitalism’, a movement led by businesses that have concluded they can no longer afford to ignore issues like climate change, income inequality and social justice. Yanis Varoufakis is the former Greek finance minister who oversaw the bailout crisis in 2015 and has spent the last decade calling for a kinder vision for the global economy.

Is capitalism past its sell by date? Or can it be reinvented for the digital age?

  • Corporations dont create jobs, DEMAND creates jobs. Watch Nick Hanauers TED Talk

    6:30

    Common-Sense Economics 101

When working families have more money, they spend more money. When middle-class Americans have more disposable income, they buy more, thus creating more demand and forcing corporations to hire. Those new employees also start spending creating more demand. Tax revenues also increase, providing federal, state and local communities much needed income to build roads, infrastructure, and provide quality education. This is not only good for the middle class, but, more sales from growing demand also benefits the rich. This is known as the multiplier effect.

Giving tax breaks to people who already have everything they want does nothing to spur the economy. Flat tax schemes and trickle down economics are big lies that bankrupt our nation, transfer vast amounts of wealth to the top, and hurt the middle class which is the key to our national security.

In this video, entrepreneur and billionaire venture capitalist, Nick Hanauer, dispels the myths during a TED talk they refused to promote.

  • Capitalism will eat democracy -- unless we speak up | Yanis Varoufakis

    19:52

Have you wondered why politicians aren't what they used to be, why governments seem unable to solve real problems? Economist Yanis Varoufakis, the former Minister of Finance for Greece, says that it's because you can be in politics today but not be in power — because real power now belongs to those who control the economy. He believes that the mega-rich and corporations are cannibalizing the political sphere, causing financial crisis. In this talk, hear his dream for a world in which capital and labor no longer struggle against each other, one that is simultaneously libertarian, Marxist and Keynesian.

  • The Myth of Capitalism: Denise Hearn, Jonathan Tepper, John Perkins, Rachel Lauter, and Nick Hanauer

    1:20:08

Many Americans envision capitalism as a driving ideal of our country, but some economists contend that a few digital monopolies have risen to restrict our nation’s capitalist ideals and act as gatekeepers to the free market. Economist author Jonathan Tepper and Business Development manager Denise Hearn take Town Hall’s stage to tackle issues of growing economic inequality. They present perspectives from their book The Myth of Capitalism: Monopolies and the Death of Competition, asserting that the U.S. has gone from an open, competitive marketplace to an economy where a few very powerful companies dominate key industries that affect our daily lives. Tepper and Hearn are joined by panelists: Nick Hanauer, co-founder and partner in venture capital firm Second Avenue Partners; John Perkins, Chief Economist as a major international consulting firm and adviser to World Bank, the United Nations, the U.S. Treasury Department; and Rachel Lauter, executive director of Working Washington and the Fair Work Center.

Together they discuss solutions, suggesting vigorous anti-trust enforcement to return America to a period where competition created higher economic growth, more jobs, higher wages and a level playing field for all. Sit in for an essential conversation on all things capitalism in America—from anemic economic growth to declining start-up success rates—and why workers are losing out.

  • See why billionaire entrepreneur Nick Hanauer says economic inequality is a bad deal for everyone

    2:26

Super-successful tech investor/entrepreneur Nick Hanauer doesn’t see fair pay as charity. A passionate, early advocate for the $15/hour minimum wage, his 2013 essay explained, In a capitalist system, rising inequality creates a death spiral of falling demand that ultimately takes everyone down.”

Nick is known to state, “Trickle-down economics is a lie,” “GDP is a horrible measure of prosperity and growth,” and other disruptive, accurate ideas. In studying IRS tax tables and finding that, since 1980, the wealthiest Americans had nearly tripled their share of national income while the poorest 50 percent had lost about a third of their share, he told Forbes, If you…assume that trend continues for another 30 years, democracy and capitalism would just collapse.”

A fan of “middle-out economics,” tax and other policies that induce middle class market demand, Nick insists you can move people who care about others but are trying to make ends meet by reaching them through their own self-interest.

Blaine's study of Nature as an economic model has led him to the conclusion that Nature is the only truly free market system and that it can teach us how to heal the pervasive divisions that plague the world today. This informative and inspirational talk is a call to action to diminish divisiveness through the use of nature's secret sauce - the scientific fact that we're all connected - and leveraging this fact by acting as centers of distribution not as centers of accumulation. Blaine Bartlett coaches and consults worldwide with leaders, executives, companies, and governments. He has personally delivered programs to more than 300,00 individuals and has directly impacted more than one million people worldwide. As a member of the Transformational Leadership Council, a Board member of the World Business Academy and an ordained Knight of the world's oldest humanitarian organization Blaine is uniquely positioned to speak about healing divisions in the world.

The primary focus of what he does is built upon a foundation that focuses on a way of doing business he describes as Compassionate Capitalism. This is an economic model for ensuring that the workplace of today and tomorrow allows individuals, organizations, society and the planet the opportunity to thrive in a generative and sustainable manner. Because business is the most pervasive force on the planet today, business has a unique and primary responsibility for uplifting the quality of all life on the planet. • How Capitalism Killed Personal Responsibility

    6:42

Many claim that capitalism is about personal responsibility, but the truth is the exact opposite. When capitalism was founded it was designed in such a way to prevent individuals from readily being held accountable for their role in extreme exploitation. The complex system between government, investors, shareholders, managers, and employees, masks the responsibility for the harm caused by the capitalist system.

Capitalism fails in every country. That is why it has never existed in its pure form in any country long term. Russia experienced pure capitalism and it was a total disaster.
