The illusion of time : past, present and future all exist together

  • The illusion of time : past, present and future all exist together

This is a nonprofit & educational excerpt from the documentary The Fabric of The Cosmos .
Please don't be misled by some comments below. This video does not say we can see future. It says Einstein's mathematical theory -which we later tested by clock experiment- also tells us that future and past always exist like the present! However, this does not necessitate pre-destination. Now is not deterministic as we know from Quantum Mechanics, so neither future nor past! Click to understand Quantum Mechanics. Wave functions evolve as time goes by. However, time does not collapse wave functions; observation collapses wave functions. Your wave function (which represents you) corresponding to your future has not collapsed yet. It will collapse in the future. As things in your life are probabilistic right now, they are probabilistic in the future too. Your past wave function has collapsed though. But your future one exists as a probability cloud in a sense. Here is a discussion I had with Avicenna10 about the topic (copy-paste the link)

    Accuracy of atomic clocks:
A comment from my exchange with axypolyas on why illusion of time does not require predestination:

+axypolyas Not sure why you are bothered by all these; perhaps it is because of your choices in life. Let me tell you something which will bother you more. You might know already, however, anyone who is reading this exchange will highly likely not.

The scientific description of you, me and everything is energy. We don't know what energy is. We can quantify it, however, in essence what is it? we have no idea. And energy takes different forms, like elementary particles, which in turn become atoms, molecules and part of the end result is us. We know energy is governed by laws and constants which naturally takes us to the inevitable conclusion: we are governed by those constants and laws. Before discovery of quantum physics, this would mean we are completely deterministic objects. Quantum physics showed us that we are not 100% deterministic. We are limited by laws but still we are unpredictable (we can calculate probabilities of what we might do next, but we don't know what we will do next until we do it). What do all these mean for us? Who are we? or what are we? Why do atoms and molecules pile up and make us? to live longer? All the atoms in our bodies are almost 15 billions of years old. What we call life is just another state in which they continue existing; nothing more; nothing special about it. How can we make sense of all these? Can we make sense of all these? If we are only, and only, condensed energy, there is no such a thing as making sense of things. There is only energy going through one state to another state mindlessly. Pretty scary and dark explanation of our existence, is the pure scientific one.

Science is only a tool; only a methodology we use to make sense of the universe. It does not tell us why things are the way they are. It tells us how we can construct theories and how we can use methods to test them, so that, we can do all these in an objective way. Science is an extremely limited way of looking into existence. Are my feelings objective? No. Are they scientific? No. Or, should I greet my neighbour every morning? Should I have an extra spoon of ice cream today? Or why do we do science? Do we have to do science? Say for our survival? Our survival has no meaning given particles making up our physical bodies existed for billions of years and they will continue to exist, perhaps longer.

I will jump to my personal understanding, rather than destroying ourselves using science. To me, existence of The Creator makes more sense than anything else, including my own existence. The Creator, who logically must (and interestingly described as such in Islam which I have chosen as a path to follow) be All-Knowing, All-Powerful, capable of creating a free agent (my soul for example) with life, creating a universe in which those free agents can grow up, examine, study, learn, make sense of it... freely... is the only logical answer I can think of. We don't see the Creator, or souls, or anything which would force us to believe and accept. Creator made us free and as part of making that choice freely, we will always be bothered by our existence, but we will never find an answer. That will remain as a matter of choice and it has always been like that.

The knowledge of truth as such is wonderful, but it is so little capable of acting as a guide that it cannot prove even the justification and the value of the aspiration toward that very knowledge of truth. Here we face, therefore, the limits of the purely rational conception of our existence. -- Albert Einstein

  • Time is an illusion - Past Present and Future Exist at the Same Time - Max Tegmark - Block Universe

According to physicists time is not real, It is just an illusion. There is no past, present or future, they all exist together. It means everything happens at the same time.
Actually the concept of time is simply an illusion made up of human memories.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist Max Tegmark, told we can portray our reality as eiher a three dimensional place where stuff happens over time, or as a four dimensional place where nothing happens i.e. a block universe- and if it really is the second picture, then change really is an illusion, because there is nothing that is changing; it's all just there - past, present, future.
“we have the illusion, at any given moment, that the past already happened and the future doesn't yet exist, and that things are changing.
But all I am ever aware of is my brain state right now. The only reason I feel like I have a past is that my brain contains memories.

According to the block Universe theory, the universe is a giant block of all the things that ever happen at any time and at any place. On the basis of this block Universe model, past, present and future are not separate, they all are present at the same time.

According to this model, every moment of our life is out there, somewhere in space-time.
Our birth and death moments both coexist at the same time, somewhere in space time coordinates.
So according to the block Universe theory, it is possible to time travel. But it says that passing of time is just an illusion. Nothing is changing in our universe. Every event that has happened from the beginning of the universe, any event that we are observing right now and any event that will happen in the future, is already present at certain coordinates in the block Universe. So passing of time is not real, it is an illusion that we observe because of our memory of the past. Nothing is passing, everything is already there somewhere in space time.

To make this idea easy to understand, let me give you a simple example.
When we watch a recorded video on our mobile phone, then we see, things are happening in a sequence as the time passes in the video. Let me ask you... whatever you are seeing in the video is happening in real time? You will Say, no...
Because you are just watching events that have already happened. You are just seeing the recorded events in the past.
The whole story told in the video, has already been told. You can go to any point in the video by reversing and forwarding it. The whole story is already present in the recorded form in the memory of mobile. But whenever anyone watches this video from starting to end, he or she feels like events are taking place in the real time and they enjoy it. But nothing is happening at that time. Everything has already happened.
In the same way, according to the block Universe model, everything that has happened, is happening and will happen, is already present at the same time in the universe at some point in space time. We are moving from past to present and from present to future with time, is just an illusion of our brains. So time is an illusion!!!

So friends, if you enjoyed this video then please click on the like button and share it with others. You can share your ideas and questions regarding, what is time, in the comment section. Do you Agree with the block Universe theory? Do you really think that time is an illusion. Share with others your point of view about the time.

  • Does past, present and future exist simultaneously? Is Time an Illusion?

Is time an illusion? If not, what is time? Why does time flow forward? You are watching this video. Your brain cells are firing in anticipation. A story is unfolding. Time is moving forward. Or is it? What if I told you that nothing is happening. There is no story unfolding. The story has already been told. The video has already been uploaded and seen by others. You are just watching it one second at a time, so there is a story unfolding for you only.

What if your entire life was like this video upload, like a DVD. The story of your life is already on that DVD. The only difference is that you don’t have a forward and reverse button. You are forced to experience your DVD one moment at a time.

There is some strong scientific evidence that this may be the true nature of reality. If so, that could mean that everything you think you know is utterly an illusion. Einstein’s theory of relativity supports something called the block universe, which is really a four dimensional space time structure. This means that every event has its own coordinates not only in space but in time. So for example, wherever you are right now corresponds to a location in 3 dimensions, like London, England - and a location in time, 2PM on Feb 2, 2019.

But just like the space 10 feet ahead of you is as real as the space 10 feet behind you, so too is the moment 10 minutes into the future and 10 minutes into the past. In other words, the past and future exist just as much as the present.

MIT physicist Max Tegmark says we can view the universe as a three dimensional space where stuff happens, or four dimensional block universe where nothing happens. If it is the latter, he says, then change is really an illusion, because nothing is changing. It’s all there – past, present and future – like a DVD. A drama maybe unfolding in the movie recorded on the dvd, but nothing about the DVD is changing in any way.

We may have the illusion, at any given moment, that the past already happened and the future doesn't yet exist, and that things are changing. But the only reason we may have a past is that our brain contains memories of the past. If we did not have any memories, would we have any sense of the past, or of a sense of time at all?

Is it possible that time doesn’t actually exist except through our perception of it?
Physics doesn’t help us when it comes to the arrow of time – it is time-agnostic. If time was running backwards, all the equations would still be valid. So mathematically, physics does not say that time goes forward or backward. It just says that time Time can not be zero, but it can run either forward or backward without violating any laws. Time is symmetric.

But this is counterintuitive. Reality seems to be telling us that time does exist, and that its arrow points in only one direction - forward.

Why doesn’t the arrow of time flow backward, if physics says it is equally likely.

It would have been possible if it were not for one aspect of physics, and that is the law of entropy.

Entropy is a measure of the disorderliness of the universe. Things always get more disorderly. You can scramble and egg, but you can’t unscramble it. This is entropy increasing. Entropy appears to be the only reason the arrow of time is what it is.

But why is Entropy always becoming higher? Why doesn’t it become lower?

There doesn’t appear to be any fundamental reason for that.

Alan Guth, professor at MIT, who pioneered the idea of cosmic inflation, may have solved this riddle. He argues that information and entropy are almost the same thing. In order to know your past, you have to form memories. Adding memories means adding information. Adding information increases entropy. Therefore a conscious system can only be conscious in one direction – when entropy increases, which allows information to increase.

This implies that we are conscious because we live in a universe of increasing entropy. Consciousness cannot exist in a universe where entropy decreases.

So if entropy has been increasing since the beginning of time, it means that the universe must have started at the lowest possible state of entropy at the beginning…at the big bang.

Why then did the universe start off this way, resulting in forward time?

Alan Guth says that if the universe is infinitely large, then the total potential entropy of the universe is infinite. If that is the case, then any entropy you start with is low entropy.

The entropy will increase from any given starting point he says. This means that it doesn’t matter what the entropy of the big bang was, it would always be the lowest entropy, because there will always be a larger entropy number that the universe can flow to.

And seemingly, we exist because time has flowed in a favorable direction for causality to occur, namely, it has flowed forward in our universe.

But what about the block universe, are we living inside a DVD? the video for the answer.

  • Why TIME is an Illusion. Past, Present and Future All Exist At Once.

Time explained. Time is an illusion and so is death. Past present and future all exist now. People always say that time is an illusion...okay but why is that so? In our energetic reality (the program of life fed into our consciousness), time is one of those rules or conditions of our experience. This video should help you see through the illusion of time better on the way to discovering your true (energetic, infinite, loving) self.

  • Is Time an Illusion? - The Science of Time Explained

Is time an illusion is a question asked even by ancient philosophers. But only physicists of the 20th century began to take the possibility of time being an illusion seriously. Albert Einstein with his general theory of relativity has shown us that time is fluid and is effected by gravity and velocity. Einstein is also known for his quote The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion. • Einstein Time and the Illusion of Free Will

Our modern understanding of physics has shown us that two people can disagree about the passage or flow of time. To complicate things, time may be a constant and static thing. Future, present, and past, all equally real. If this is the case, that our futures are existing realities, we may not have freedom of action after all.

  • Your Brain Is an Illusion Factory: Time, Color, Causality | Dean Buonomano

    New videos DAILY:

Join Big Think Edge for exclusive video lessons from top thinkers and doers:

Are you sitting down? We've got some news: your brain is playing tricks on you. It must be hard to hear that, y'know, since you've known your brain for so long. But your brain is perceiving time, color, and a whole array of other things in a fully different way that you think you are. It might sound a big freshman dorm conversation after midnight initially, but Dean Buonomano explains perfectly that color (for instance) is little more than wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, and that time is a totally human construct in that it doesn't exactly exist because it is entirely subjective. Dean's new book is appropriately called Your Brain Is A Time Machine.

Dean Buonomano was among the first neuroscientists to begin to ask how the human brain encodes time. It’s not an easy concept to grasp, Buonomano says, and for that reason many researchers overlook it. “The first field of modern science was probably geometry, which was formalized by Euclid around 300 B.C.,” says the researcher, “What’s amazing about geometry is that there is absolutely no time involved; it’s the study of things that never change. And there’s a reason why it is one of the first science fields. Science is much easier if you can ignore time.”

Buonomano was in grad school when he became enamored of the question of how we navigate through time. As a graduate student at the University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center at Houston, Buonomano collaborated with Michael Mauk after he heard Mauk’s lecture on his studies of the neural circuits in the cerebellum. Mauk and Buonomano modeled the way the cerebellum’s circuits could respond to stimuli and showed that this type of neuronal network can differentiate between time intervals that differ by just tens of milliseconds. Such networks also have the ability to tune the timing of their responses, the two found. “My collaboration with him was absolutely formative for me,” says Buonomano. “Mauk had this very influential notion that time is encoded in the changing patterns of neuronal activity.”

Today, Buonomano’s laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles, uses computational modeling, in vitro electrophysiology, and human psychophysics experiments to explore how neurons and the brain as a whole perceive and respond to time. Here, Buonomano describes how he performed his first experiments on his little sister, bathed mice with antidandruff shampoo, and hypothesized that timing is so integral to brain function that all of our brain’s circuits keep tabs on the clock.

In his new book, Your Brain Is a Time Machine, brain researcher and best-selling author Dean Buonomano draws on evolutionary biology, physics, and philosophy to present his influential theory of how we tell, and perceive, time. The human brain, he argues, is a complex system that not only tells time but creates it; it constructs our sense of chronological flow and enables “mental time travel”—simulations of future and past events. These functions are essential not only to our daily lives but to the evolution of the human race: without the ability to anticipate the future, mankind would never have crafted tools or invented agriculture. The brain was designed to navigate our continuously changing world by predicting what will happen and when.

Dean Buonomano: Time is complicated, I think more so than space. If you think about our mammalian ancestors, our mammalian cousins, all animals have a fairly good understanding of space in the sense that they know where a predator is located behind a tree; or if my dog loses its treat it knows to go behind the couch or beside the couch or over the couch.

But time—we navigate space, right. We take left turns, we have a map of space within our heads and we know that if somebody goes around the corner where we can go after them.

But time we don’t navigate time, right. Time is this one way street. And I think in part because of that time is something that we never involved to manipulate to map out because we have very little options. Time doesn’t have any branches or right turns or exits or 180 degree wraparounds. So I think the brain of most mammals didn’t involve to manipulate, to think about time as much as in space.

Although I think humans are unique in the sense that we and perhaps we alone have this notion of past, present...

  • Does Time Really Pass?

We are all familiar with the notion that time passes, but what does this mean? In this talk, Dr Simon Prosser argues that time does not pass. He begins by outlining some philosophical theories of temporal passage (the A-theory of time - including presentism and the growing block), along with a class of theories according to which time does not objectively pass (the B-theory of time - eternalism or the block universe). He then goes over traditional problems for the notion of passage, including McTaggart's argument, the issue of the rate of passage, and the argument that passage is incompatible with modern physics (in particular, with Einstein's special theory of relativity). He then goes on to argue that, despite appearances to the contrary, it's not actually possible to experience time passing. But because the best reason for thinking that time passes is our experience of it, we no longer have any good reason for thinking that time actually passes. If this is right, then it is an important project for philosophers and psychologists to explain why it seems to us that time passes.

This was given at Durham University in 2012.

  • The Order of Time: Carlo Rovelli explains that time doesnt really exist

The bestselling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics introduces the mysteries of time, further explored in his new book, The Order of Time.

Time is a mystery that does not cease to puzzle us. Philosophers, artists and poets have long explored its meaning while scientists have found that its structure is different from the simple idea we have of it. From Einstein to quantum theory and beyond, our understanding of time has been undergoing radical transformations. Time flows at a different speed in different places, the past and the future differ far less than we might think, and the very notion of the present evaporates in the vast universe.

  • Does Time Really Exist? Is Time An Illusion?

Does time really exist? Is time an illusion? This is the story of a timeless reality, where the past, present and the future coexist in harmony.

Theoretical physicist Julian Barbour has been studying the nature of time for over four decades. This extensive study made him question the passing of time, the very fabric that’s holding our reality together. According to him, yes, time is an illusion.

In this episode of Journal of Things (s2 e8), we are going to discuss the nature of time and even question its very existence, its spiritual, philosophical and scientific implications.

Andrew Zimmerman Jones contemplates whether time is something that physically exists or is just in our heads.

  • Time Illusion I Full Documentary 2016

Is time real, or is change just a kind of optical illusion resting on a deeper unchanging reality?

As finite creatures, with death hovering just out of our sight, the true nature of time haunts all our endeavors. Tomorrow, physicist Brian Greene tackles time's illusion in his Fabric of Reality PBS series. Science, however, is just one way we ask about the reality of time.

In the domains of spirituality, humans have also asked if there is more, or less, to time than ticking clocks or the march from birth to death. It is often the now which takes precedence in spiritual endeavor.

Buddhists, with their emphasis on meditation, have long seen the unspooling of time as an artifact of the mind. In Zen Mind, Beginners Mind, Shunryu Suzuki tells us:

You may say, 'I must do something this afternoon' but actually there is no 'this afternoon' ... At one o'clock you will eat your lunch. To eat your lunch is, itself, one o'clock.
Christian writers such as Meister Eckhart have taken a similar stance:

There exists only the present instant ... There is no yesterday nor any tomorrow, but only Now ...
Science however has its own take on time's illusion.

For decades physics inverted the problem, holding the now to be something less than real. In relativity theory the past, present and future already exist in the four-dimensional continuum of space-time. You think next Tuesday hasn't occurred yet. But in relativity, every event in your life defines a single 4-D object called your world-line and it's all there already.

Physicists, however, are sure this block universe of relativity is not the whole story.

Space-time must, at the smallest scales, become quantized, like sand on the beach. Hunting for quantum versions of space-time, scientists are now in remarkable territory. It's a place where time as a fundamental actor in physics may fade away. Time might be emergent — a derived aspect of a more fundamental and timeless reality.

More radical ideas reject the notion of time altogether, taking each moment as separate and eternal.

Perhaps the now is all that exists, the past and future merely illusions. Or, perhaps, it is the now that's an illusion and below the appearance of change is a timeless substrate that is perfect in its eternal repose.

One thing is, however, certain. Looking across the broad field of human endeavor — science, art and religion — time and the question of its illusion remains essential, and essentially unresolved.

Our days certainly seem numbered. We long to know if this countdown to darkness is real, or simply the trick of a more limited perspective

  • The Illusion of Time | The Future Already Exists

The Illusion of Time | The Future Already Exists

We live in a river of time in which the source of the river (our past) and its final destination ahead of us (our future) already exist.
― Fred Alan Wolf, Dr. Quantum's Little Book of Big Ideas, Where Science Meets Spirit

Since the tapestry of all time has already been woven, everything I could ever want to happen in my life already exists in that infinite, nonphysical plane. My only task is to expand my earthly self enough to let it into this realm.
―Anita Moorjani, Dying To Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing

...for us physicists believe the separation between past, present, and future
is only an illusion, although a convincing one.
    ―Albert Einstein

If you try to get your hands on time, it's always slipping through your fingers. People are sure time is there, but they can't get hold of it. My feeling is that they can't get hold of it because it isn't there at all.
    ―Julian Barbour, Physicist

  • Is the Passage of Time Just an Illusion?

The flow of time is central to human experience. The past drifts away and the future relentlessly approaches. But does time really flow? Or, as Einstein suggested, might the distinction between past, present and future be an illusion? Paul Davies explains why the passage of time is an illusion with a metaphor.

The Illusion of Time and Space
    by Jeff Street

Like a lot of things about this reality we experience, linear time is simply a very convincing illusion. It is an illusion created by consciousness. In fact, so is space. Closely related to the idea of time is the notion of linear causality — A causes B causes C. This notion is also just a very convincing illusion. The reality that we are experiencing is by no means an objective reality as most people presume. It is more like what we would conceive of as a virtual reality, but one with some very interesting rules.

Let's briefly review the basics about what you and the universe really are and then we'll dive into how and why time and space are illusions.
