  • Intels ATX12VO Spec Explained & What Manufacturers Think

    23:59

The ATX12VO (12 Volt-Only) power supply spec has gotten a lot of attention for its assumed potential to change PSUs forever. This video explains ATX12VO's real intentions.
Sponsor: Visit for 15% off your order!

    Article:

In this video, we'll be talking about the Intel ATX12VO spec and ATX12V spec (which Intel also wrote). These changes are mostly coming into effect to assist manufacturers in abiding by CEC (California Energy Commission) requirements for PSU efficiency, but they've also been under scrutiny by the PC enthusiast and DIY community due to concerns of driving a wedge into existing compatibility. Fortunately, these changes primarily affect the DIY/system integrator (SI) markets, and they're sort of already in effect for some major OEMs. In this video, we'll break-down ATX12VO and Intel's spec, along with some discussion of what manufacturers think. We spoke with a PSU manufacturer, a PSU factory that actually makes power supplies, and with Jon Gerow of Corsair (formerly JonnyGuru) to get some thoughts.

  • Preparing for the forced Windows 11 upgrade disaster

    27:14

    #Microsoft #Windows11 #ForcedUpgrade #UpgradeDisaster

As you know, Microsoft announced Windows 11 on June 24, 2021. With the plans to forceable installed it on your Windows 10 computer starting in October 2021, with free upgrades available until June 2022. Now, we remember the disaster that was the forced Windows 10 upgrade. We had 100's of ticked-off clients cause they did not want or ask for the Windows 10 upgrade (heck, I still have clients who refuse to upgrade to Windows 10 even though I have explained the security risk). Please, Microsoft, do not force Windows 11 onto people. If they want it, have them download the ISO/installer like how Windows 10 is now. If you force people to take Windows 11, all you are going to be doing is making us money reversing or reinstalling Windows 10 onto computers. Let the people decided if they want it or not.

  • Secrets Of The Motherboard - Graham Sutherland at 44CON 2017

    41:53

Secrets Of The Motherboard (Shit My Chipset Says) - Presented by: Graham Sutherland at 44CON 2017

Modern motherboards are fairly daunting pieces of hardware. They’re full of closed-source firmware, undocumented and obscure parts, incredibly complex components, and are developed by people with vast domain-specific knowledge. They’re also full of exciting security-impacting technologies like IME, AMT, SMM, TPM, and UEFI. But, despite the apparent difficulty, what if we took a stab at trying to understand these devices and what security looks like at the bare-metal level? The real secret is that it’s not as hard as it looks.

This talk runs through a list of weird and wonderful things I found while reading datasheets for Intel chipsets and other motherboard parts. Along the way we’ll explore unusual functionality not intended for production use, features we can exploit to build more open platforms, potential security pitfalls in motherboard design, and the challenges faced by certain industries in attempting to secure hardware for reuse.

  • Reliable-Fast-Upgradable Computer build $370

    27:41

This video is for anyone that's looking to buy a computer in the local store or on line!

And you are looking to spend $300 or $2000 I'm going to show you the difference between a fast, reliable and fully upgradable computer for whatever your budget is!

And show you computers that has none of those benefits of being fast reliable or upgradable nor worth the money you paid for it.

Show you the simple things to look out for, when buying a computer.

So that you can be confident that you are getting a computer that is fast, reliable and fully upgradable!

Or at the very least know that what you are paying for is a pile of useless electronic parts that could fail at any time!

I am not affiliated with any company I'm not bias towards any brand of computer.

I'm simply giving you my knowledge and experience as a computer tech.

Where I come across all types of computers branded and custom built computers! And fix them! upgrade them! or whatever the case maybe!

But the one thing I always tell anyone that comes to me with a computer that's over 2 years old and needs some work done on it!

It's not worth fixing! Or it's not worth upgrading because the computer was not built with quality parts or the tech has moved on and you can't get those parts any more!

whether they are desktops, laptops, tablets or smartphones

So computer users that are not in the know! not savvy about what's good and what's bad!

Unsure of the difference between a computer that is fast reliable and fully upgradable at a reasonable price!

Compared to computers that are reasonably priced

Fast for the first few months, at best!

Not reliable in any way shape or form!

    Next to impossible to upgrade!

which means you will be throwing it out after 2-3 years!

Or at the very least have to replace some part that has failed

or just not able to do what you want it to do!

and pay through to nose to get it sorted!

So keep in mind when you are purchasing a computer.

And it doesn't matter whether it's a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone they all have one year warranty on parts!

    There's a reason for that!....

Where there is a warranty there is risk they only give 1 year warranty because parts start to degrade once they are built and after 12 months it's more noticeable especially the hard drive and they are usually 99 % of the time Disk drives...!

The quality of the motherboard is another area that must be addressed same scenario as disk drives!

All this is not running through the mind of a shopper at the time they are buying a new computer and of course you trust the computer store assistant or sales person right!

Or even on that online computer store that has years of experience and knowledge of selling computers and components to happy consumers!

So why is there so much rubbish being sold online and off?

My advice to anyone thinking of buying a computer is....
    get advice!

  • Saving Nostalgia: Modding an Old Z80 Computer - Presented By Graham Sutherland

    51:09

In this talk we’ll follow a project of mine to take an old VTech computer from the late 1980s, upon which I wrote my very first line of code, and add save functionality to its hardware. The computer was designed to teach kids general knowledge, science, history, typing skills, and programming in BASIC. It boasts a one-line text based LCD display, 2KB of SRAM, and a Z80 processor. The one thing that always bothered me, though, is that I couldn’t ever save code I wrote on it — turning it off meant all state was lost.

I’ll describe my approach towards reverse engineering the circuitry, identifying the ICs, understanding the system topology, designing a hardware mod to allow saving of data, and fabrication of the real thing.

  • Reliable-Fast-Upgradable Computer build $370

    27:43

This video is for anyone that's looking buy a computer in the local store or on line!

And you are looking to spend $300 or $2000 i'm going to show you the difference between a fast, reliable and fully upgradable computer for whatever your budget is!

and show you computers that has none of thoes benifits of being fast reliable or upgradable nor worth the money you paid for it.

And i'm going to show you the simple things to look out for, when buying a computer.

So that you can be confident that you are getting a computer that is fast, reliable and fully upgradable!

Or at the very least know!

that what you are paying for is a pile of useless electronic parts that could fail at any time!

I am not affiliated with any company I'm not bias towards any brand of computer.

I'm simply giving you my knowledge and experience as a computer tech.

Where i come across all types of computers branded and custom built computers! And fix them upgrade them or whatever the case maybe!

But the one thing I always tell anyone that comes to me with a computer that's over 2 years old and needs some work done on it!

It's not worth fixing! Or it's not worth upgrading because the computer was not built with quality parts or the tech has moved on and you can't get those parts any more!

wheither they are desktops, laptops, tablets or smartphones

So computer users that are not in the know! not savie about what's good and what's bad!

Unsure of the difference between a computer that is fast reliable and fully upgradable at a reasonable price!

Compaired to computers that are reasonably priced

Fast for the first few months, at best,

Not reliable in any way shape or form!

    Next to impossible to upgrade!

which means you will be throwing it out after 2-3 years!

Or at the very least have to replace some part that has failed

or just not able to do what you want it to do!

and pay through to nose to get it sorted!

And keep in mind when you are purchasing a computer.

And it does'nt matter wheither it's a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone they all have one year warranty on parts!

    There's a reason for that!....

Where there is a warranty there is risk they only give 1 year warranty because parts start to degrade once they are built and after 12 months it's more noticeable espeically the hard drive and they are usually 99 % of the time Disk drives...!

So why is there so much rubish being sold online and off?

My advice to anyone thinking of buying a computer is get advice!

Welcome to the wonderful world of RLCraft where even breathing can get you killed. This is a good old fashioned Let's Play series that I hope to have at least 30+ episodes! Everything on youtube now is so crazy or full of gimmicks. I want to get back to the roots with a nice modded Minecraft Let's Play in 2020! I have really been working on my editing and blending different inspirations into my adventure! I know i'm way smaller than them but I want to thank TheNeoCubist for really bringing back the simplicity of a Let's Play series. I wouldn't say this series is super simplistic but I am inspired to do a new Minecraft vanilla Let's Play in the future! I also want to thank the community for all the love and almost 1 thousand subs! You are all so supportive and loving and I hope I give you a great accepting place to talk about nerdy stuff and be yourselves!

  • Ep210 Last Straw for LastPass

    1:39:02

I’ve recommended LastPass for years – since I wrote my book and every day since. Until now. There are several good (secure and private) password managers out there. But LastPass was the full package: a free tier that had all the functionality most people need and for-pay tiers that had very useful extras. But now they’re hobbling the free version by only allowing you to use it on one type of device: either a mobile device or a computer, but not both. To me, that makes the free tier useless. LastPass’s Android app was also found to contain seven different trackers. That was the last straw for me. In today’s episode, I’ll tell you my new recommendations and give you an important tip on making the switch.

In other news: a new law in Australia aims to force Google and Facebook to pay for news links; SolarWinds is blaming an intern for using a horrible password; SMS tax scams are picking up; Alexa Skills have serious privacy and security issues; adtech companies are scrambling to avoid telling you that you’re being tracked on iOS; cops use copyright filters to prevent being recorded; a new company is creating a nationwide surveillance system; pharmacies are capitalizing on the COVID vaccine to get your data for marketing; Firefox 86 has a killer new system to prevent third party cookie tracking; however, adtech is exploiting a loophole in DNS to turn third party cookies into first party cookies.
