    A world first. New footage from Mars rendered in stunning 4K resolution. We also talk about the cameras on board the Martian rovers and how we made the video.

    The cameras on board the rovers were the height of technology when the respective missions launched.

    A question often asked is:
    ‘Why don’t we actually have live video from Mars?’

    Although the cameras are high quality, the rate at which the rovers can send data back to earth is the biggest challenge. Curiosity can only send data directly back to earth at 32 kilo-bits per second.

    Instead, when the rover can connect to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we get more favourable speeds of 2 Megabytes per second.

    However, this link is only available for about 8 minutes each Sol, or Martian day.

    As you would expect, sending HD video at these speeds would take a long long time. As nothing really moves on Mars, it makes more sense to take and send back images.

    The first real images of Mars. For several hundred years we have been looking at the red planet with great curiosity. The earth-like celestial body is the fourth in the solar system and the closest neighbour of the earth. The planet has a diameter that is only half as large as that of Earth. But its weight is only a tenth of that of the Earth. This is due to its low density and results in a relatively low attraction force. Despite its distance of at least 56 million kilometers, Mars seems to be within reach.

    Mars has fascinated mankind for centuries. Named after the Roman god of war, the Red Planet is the epitome of an alien celestial body. Its exploration is currently one of the most important projects in the field of modern space travel. A short time ago, NASA's Perseverance rover landed on the surface of the legendary planet. The first high-resolution images sent to Earth by the renowned space agency made our jaws drop. However, given the dust-covered surface of Mars, the assumption could quickly arise that the Red Planet is a seemingly lifeless celestial body that lacks any geological and volcanic activity. However, as a recent sensational discovery from the ranks of astronomers shows, Mars could still be home to more life than experts had previously assumed. This discovery suggests that Mars still possesses active volcanoes. In the following video we’ll reveal what these might be like and how they differ from the Earth.

  • For 10 Years NASA Has Been Capturing Images of Mars and They Now Reveal the Planets Amazing Beauty

    On August 12, 2005, NASA launched an unmanned spacecraft. The idea was for them to capture photos of the unexplored planet. Mars is also known as the Red Planet. This is because the planet has a reddish hue when observed in the night sky. It is the fourth closest planet to the sun, right beside Earth, which is the third. Mars is just over half the size of Earth. It has just about 38 percent of the surface gravity than Earth does. Mars has water; however, because of the low atmospheric pressure on Mars, it has only 1 percent of the water that Earth does.

    On Mars, there is a lot of water ice. Scientists believe that the Mars polar caps contain a great deal of ice. They believe that if all of the ice at the south pole of Mars were to melt, it would cover the whole planet in 36 feet of water. In 1610, a scientist was able to examine Mars through a telescope. It was then that the Italian astronomer Galileo made his breakthrough. In 1659, a Dutch scientist named Christiaan Huygens was the first scientist to identify a Martian feature, the volcanic plain of Syrtis Major. It was then determined that the length of a day on Mars was 24 hours and 30 minutes.

    We couldn't wait to get spaceships to Mars to explore. This started the Cold War Space Race between the USA and the USSR. The Soviets were the first to launch a probe to Mars in 1961, but the Americans were the first to find success with Mars-bound spaceships. The Soviet Union launched five missions to Mars between 1960 and 1962, but all of them failed. The US sent their first ship to Mars in 1964, but that one failed also. Later in 1964, the US spaceship, Mariner 4, made it to Mars. They had a successful flyby in July 1965. When the craft returned to Earth, it had detailed pictures of the surface of the planet.

    After the first flyby of Mars, more and more missions were sent to the planet. With technology, the missions were more successful. Regardless of the success, two out of three missions failed. In 1971, Mariner 7 managed to orbit around the whole planet. In 1976, Viking 1 and 2 were able to land on the surface of Mars. Viking 1 managed to get the first ever, color photo of the planet's surface.

    In 1966, the Mars Global Surveyor spaceship was sent to space for a mapping exercise. It wasn't going to land on Mars, but it was going to find optimal spots for spacecraft to land in the future. Finally, in 2008, the American spacecraft Phoenix landed in the northern pole of Mars. It was a robotic vehicle that had a probing arm. It was then that we confirmed that there is water on Mars in the form of ice.

    This spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida in August 2005, and it cost $720 million to build. The spaceship was 21-feet tall, and it contained a radio antenna dish that was 10-feet in diameter. It was also fitted with 220 square feet of solar panels. It weighed 4,800 pounds when it was launched, and half of that was fuel to power the necessary 20 thrust engines.

    When the Orbiter was launched, it took seven months to get to Mars. The operation lasted for five months. The main objective of the Orbiter was to find out more about the past levels of water n Mars. Scientists knew that the water ran across the surface of the planet earlier. Now they wanted to know if there was still water present, allowing for living organisms to thrive on the planet for long periods of time.

    The purpose of the mission was to measure the weather trends on the Red Planet. They wanted to know more about the seasonal changes and the makeup of the polar ice fields. They also wanted to search for dangerous landing areas, such as protruding rocks.

    In 2008, the Phoenix that had been launched in August 2007 and it had a successful soft landing on Mars. They managed to get a photo of Phoenix as it parachuted down to Mars. The area where it landed looked a lot like the Earth's polar regions that are covered with permafrost. The robotic arm was dropped to take samples of the soil on Mars. These samples confirmed that there was ice just below the surface.

    During the mission, the spacecraft was able to capture 2,054 images of the Red Planet. The photos told them a lot about the planet. There are pictures of the areas where there was once water. There are a few frozen spots on the planet that are sheltered from the sun's rays by deep folds of dunes. There is a photo that was taken in May, which is the Martian spring, where snow and ice on the ground are actually frozen carbon dioxide, also known as dry ice.     China aims to send its first crewed mission to Mars in 2033, with regular follow-up flights to follow, under a long-term plan to build a permanently inhabited base on the Red Planet and extract its resources.

    The ambitious plan, which will intensify a race with the United States to plant humans on Mars, was disclosed in detail for the first time after China landed a robotic rover on Mars in mid-May in its inaugural mission to the planet.

    Crewed launches to Mars are planned for 2033, 2035, 2037, 204, and beyond, the head of China's main rocket maker, Wang Xiaojun, told a space exploration conference in Russia recently by video link.

    Before the crewed missions begin, China will send robots to Mars to study possible sites for the base and to build systems to extract resources there, the official China Space News reported, citing Wang, who is head of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology.

    For human inhabitation on Mars, crews would have to be able to use the planet's resources, such as extracting any water beneath its surface, generating oxygen on-site, and producing electricity.

    China must also develop technology to fly astronauts back to Earth.

    An uncrewed round-trip mission to acquire soil samples from the planet is expected by the end of 2030.

    The U.S. space agency NASA has been developing technology to get a crew to Mars and back sometime in the 2030s.

    China's Mars plan envisages fleets of spacecraft shuttling between Earth and Mars and major development of its resources, Wang said.

    To shorten the travel time, spacecraft would have to tap energy released from nuclear reactions in the form of heat and electricity, in addition to traditional chemical propellants, Wang said.

    China would have to accomplish round trips with a total flight time of a few hundred days, he said.

    China is also planning to set up a base in the south pole of the Moon and is deploying robotic expeditions to asteroids and Jupiter around 2030.

    How China’s space station could help power astronauts to Mars

    China’s first module of its upcoming Tiangong space station makes use of ion drives, technology that could vastly cut down the time it takes to travel to Mars — and greatly reduce the amount of fuel needed to make that trip, as the South China Morning Post reports.

    The module, called Tianhe and launched in late April, is powered by four ion thrusters that use electricity to accelerate ions as a form of propulsion. In fact, the module could soon become the first spacecraft in history to transport humans using the technology, according to SCMP. The four ion drives that power the Tianhe module are small compared to rocket engines but they are incredibly efficient.

    The International Space Station, for instance, consumes over four tonnes of fuel annually to stay in its near-Earth orbit. If powered by ion thrusters, its consumption would drop to 400kg (881lbs), requiring just one refueling mission a year, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

    With existing rocket technology, a crewed trip to Mars would take more than eight months and would need a spaceship large enough to carry sufficient fuel and other supplies.

    But some researchers calculate a craft powered by a 200-megawatt ion drive array could shorten the journey time to just 39 days and allow the mission to use smaller vessels or carry more supplies.

    In the 2400s, mankind begins to terraform the planet Mars. Giant corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate huge projects to raise the temperature, the oxygen level, and the ocean coverage until the environment is habitable. In Terraforming Mars, you play one of those corporations and work together in the terraforming process, but compete for getting victory points that are awarded not only for your contribution to the terraforming, but also for advancing human infrastructure throughout the solar system, and doing other commendable things.

    The players acquire unique project cards (from over two hundred different ones) by buying them to their hand. The projects (cards) can represent anything from introducing plant life or animals, hurling asteroids at the surface, building cities, to mining the moons of Jupiter and establishing greenhouse gas industries to heat up the atmosphere. The cards can give you immediate bonuses, as well as increasing your production of different resources. Many cards also have requirements and they become playable when the temperature, oxygen, or ocean coverage increases enough. Buying cards is costly, so there is a balance between buying cards (3 megacredits per card) and actually playing them (which can cost anything between 0 to 41 megacredits, depending on the project). Standard Projects are always available to complement your cards.

    Your basic income, as well as your basic score, is based on your Terraform Rating (starting at 20), which increases every time you raise one of the three global parameters. However, your income is complemented with your production, and you also get VPs from many other sources.

    Each player keeps track of their production and resources on their player boards, and the game uses six types of resources: MegaCredits, Steel, Titanium, Plants, Energy, and Heat. On the game board, you compete for the best places for your city tiles, ocean tiles, and greenery tiles. You also compete for different Milestones and Awards worth many VPs. Each round is called a generation (guess why) and consists of the following phases:

    1) Player order shifts clockwise.
    2) Research phase: All players buy cards from four privately drawn.
    3) Action phase: Players take turns doing 1-2 actions from these options: Playing a card, claiming a Milestone, funding an Award, using a Standard project, converting plant into greenery tiles (and raising oxygen), converting heat into a temperature raise, and using the action of a card in play. The turn continues around the table (sometimes several laps) until all players have passed.
    4) Production phase: Players get resources according to their terraform rating and production parameters.

    When the three global parameters (temperature, oxygen, ocean) have all reached their goal, the terraforming is complete, and the game ends after that generation. Count your Terraform Rating and other VPs to determine the winning corporation!

  • First Video of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter in Flight, Includes Takeoff and Landing

    In this video captured by NASA’s Perseverance rover, the agency's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter took the first powered, controlled flight on another planet on April 19, 2021.

    The rover was parked at “Van Zyl Overlook,” about 211 feet (64.3 meters) away in Mars' Jezero Crater and chronicled the flight operations with its cameras.

    These images from the rover’s Mastcam-Z cameras show the helicopter hovering above the Red Planet's surface. During this first flight, the helicopter climbed to an altitude of 10 feet (3 meters), hovered, and then touched back down on the surface of Mars.

    Ingenuity is a technology demonstration. The 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft will help determine whether future explorations on Mars could include an aerial perspective.

    Perseverance touched down at Octavia E. Butler Landing with Ingenuity attached to its belly on Feb. 18, 2021. The helicopter was deployed to the surface on April 3.

    We follow the Curiosity Rover on Mars as it climbs up a Martian mountain named Mount Sharp. We have selected only the clearest footage from Mars to give you a sense of actually being there alongside Curiosity. All the places that NASA has explored have been given nicknames, which you will see in the video. Some of the images have been 'white balanced' by NASA to give geologists a clearer view of the rocks.

    A quick summary of the Journey:

    Landing in the Gale Crater, Curiosity heads towards Yellowknife Bay, taking its first drive over 'Glenelg'. In Yellowknife Bay, Curiosity finds the first evidence that the Gale Crater was once filled with salty water.

    Curiosity goes on to explore the Bagnold Dunes and crosses through the Naukluft Plateau into Murray Buttes where it begins to ascend Mount Sharp. Climbing on top of 'Vera Rubin Ridge' provides Curiosity with a magnificent view, from where we started in the Gale Crater.

    China just launched a major Mars mission, called Tianwen-1, on Thursday in what it hopes will become its first successful landing on the red planet. It is China's first solo mission to Mars after a previous attempt with Russia failed several years ago.     China launched a major Mars mission on Thursday in what it hopes will become its first successful landing on the Red Planet.

    The mission, known as Tianwen -1 will see a rover, lander and orbiter launched aboard a Long March 5 rocket from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center on Hainan Island on Thursday. It is China’s first solo mission to Mars after a previous attempt with Russia failed several years ago.

    The state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation declared the launch a success and said the Tianwen-1 rover had been successfully transferred to the “predetermined orbit,” according to an official post on WeChat.

    Meanwhile, the U.S. is gearing up for a launch of NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover which is scheduled for July 30.

    China’s Tianwen-1 will arrive at its destination seven months after launch. The orbiter will orbit Mars while the rover and lander will make a journey to the surface of the Red Planet.

    Scientists from the world’s second-largest economy hope to map the geological structure of Mars, investigate the characteristics of its soil and water-ice distribution, study the surface material composition and more broadly understand the environment on the planet, according to the mission’s chief scientist.

    The U.S. is the only other country that has landed and operated a rover on Mars, so if China’s mission is successful, it would be a big feat.

    China has put a big emphasis on space over the last few years. President Xi Jinping urged the industry earlier this year to make China a “great space power as soon as possible,” according to state-backed China Daily.

    But China has faced some setbacks in getting its Mars ambitions off the ground. In 2011, it attempted to launch an orbiter called Yinghuo-1 on a Russian spacecraft being launched by a Ukrainian rocket. But the launch ultimately failed.

    And in 2017, the second launch of the Long March 5 rocket ended in failure.

    But China has also seen some recent successes. It was the first nation to land a spacecraft on the so-called dark side of the moon. And earlier this year, China launched the final satellite to complete its global navigation system called Beidou.

    China’s Mars mission comes after the UAE successfully launched its Mars probe, named Hope, earlier this month and as the U.S. gears up for its own mission to the Red Planet.

    The flurry of Mars launches has to do with timing. Approximately every 26 months, the Mars and Earth are closer than usual, allowing for a launch.

    The U.S. is slated to launch its Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover on July 30 with the aim of studying life on the planet. The rover will seek signs of habitable conditions on Mars in the ancient past but also indications of “past microbial life,” according to NASA.

    Ingenuity After Fifth Flight ON MARS

    NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter’s was captured after landing on May 7, 2021, by the Mastcam-Z imager, one among the instruments aboard the agency’s Perseverance rover. The helicopter ascended to a replacement height record of 33 feet (10 meters) and flew 424 feet (129 meters) to a replacement landing site. This was the helicopter’s fifth flight, and therefore the first time the helicopter made a one-way flight. it had been airborne a complete of 108 seconds.

    The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter was built by JPL, which also manages the technology demonstration project for NASA Headquarters. it's supported by NASA’s Science, Aeronautics Research, and Space Technology mission directorates. NASA’s Ames research facility in California’s Silicon Valley , and NASA’s Langley research facility in Hampton, Virginia, provided significant flight performance analysis and technical assistance during Ingenuity’s development. AeroVironment Inc., Qualcomm, and SolAero also provided design assistance and major vehicle components. Lockheed Martin Space designed and made the Mars Helicopter Delivery System.

    You can enjoy panoramic views of the Red Planet in the video, along with deserts, massive dunes, cracked ground, etc. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, being larger than only Mercury. In English, Mars carries the name of the Roman god of war and is often referred to as the Red Planet.

    Mars Experience in 4k with new images from 2020 and 2021 and with motion in incredibly detailed high-resolution quality. It has cost me many hours to present you the Mars in 4K. The Pictures are taken from the official NASA Site and are higher than 8k Resolution. Now, I rendered them in a Motion Video with qhd/4k Resolution.

    Why Doesn't NASA Record HD Videos from Mars?
    While the cameras are high quality, the speed at which rovers can send data to Earth is the biggest challenge. Curiosity can only send data to Earth at 32 kilobits per second.

    If the rover can connect to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we get cheaper speeds of 2 megabytes per second. However, this link is only available for about 8 minutes per day from Sol or Martian day

    As expected, sending HD video at these speeds would take a long time. Since nothing really moves on Mars, it makes more sense to take photos and send them back.

    NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Landing #CountdownToMars. NASA Mars 2020 spacecraft with Perseverance Rover and the Ingenuity helicopter drone will touch down in Jezero crater on Mars. Mars 2020 rover, named Perseverance, will explore the Martian surface and seek to answer questions about the potential of ancient life on Mars.NASA’s Perseverance Rover has reached the Red Planet and will go through the final phase known as Entry, Descent and Landing. Perseverance was launched on July 30, 2020, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, aboard an ULA’s Atlas V-541 rocket, and will land on Mars at Jezero Crater after travelling about 293 million miles, or 471 million kilometers.

    Perseverance is the most sophisticated rover NASA has ever sent to the Red Planet, with a name that embodies NASA’s passion, and the nation’s capability, to take on and overcome challenges. It will collect carefully selected and documented rock and sediment samples for future return to Earth, search for signs of ancient microbial life, characterize the planet’s geology and climate, and pave the way for human exploration beyond the Moon.

    Perseverance is also ferrying several cutting-edge technologies to the surface of Mars – including a helicopter named Ingenuity, the first aircraft to attempt powered, controlled flight on another planet.

    During a prime mission that will last one Mars year (about 687 Earth days), Perseverance’s exploration of Jezero Crater will address high-priority science goals for Mars exploration. A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will also characterize the planet’s climate and geology, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first planetary mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust).

    The intense entry, descent, and landing (EDL) phase begins when the spacecraft reaches the top of the Martian atmosphere, traveling at about 12,100 mph (19,500 kph). EDL ends about seven minutes later, with the rover stationary on the Martian surface. Many engineers refer to the time it takes to land on Mars as the “seven minutes of terror.” Not only is the choreography of EDL complex, but the time delay involved in communicating with Earth means that the spacecraft has to accomplish this choreography all by itself. While all landings on Mars are difficult, Perseverance is landing in the most challenging terrain ever targeted. Jezero Crater is a 28-mile-wide (45-kilometer-wide) impact basin with an intriguing ancient river delta as well as steep cliffs, sand dunes, boulder fields, and smaller impact craters. Landing at Jezero Crater is only possible because of new EDL technologies such as Range Trigger and Terrain-Relative Navigation. nasa perseverance perseverance rover
