    9. The Reed Flute Cave – Guangxi, China
This cave is quite the landmark and a major tourist attraction that can be found on the outskirt of the city of Guilin in Guangxi, China. The cave gets its name from the reeds that grow inside it and are perfect for turning them into reeds. Not only that, but you can also find a variety of mineral formations, carbon deposits and stone pillars. The cave was rediscovered back in the 1940s by refugees and is around 180 years old with roughly 70 inscriptions on the walls that go as far back as 792 AD.

    8. The Blue Grotto – Capri, Italy
This famous sea cave can be found right on the coast of the island of Capri in Italy where it extends for 177 feet. The sun’s light is able to pass through the underwater cavity and illuminates the ocean’s waters, producing a reflection that makes the cave glow blue. With only one entrance, this cave can only be reached by boat and the passengers must lie flat as the oarsman uses a metal chain to pull the boat into the cave. Visitors are also forbidden to swim in the grotto in order to preserve the clarity of the water.

    7. The Lascaux Caves – Montignac, France
This cave is found in the southwestern region of France, where it is more known for the Paleolithic cave paintings that are found inside, which a teenager happened to stumble across them back in the 1940s. The cave art is dated at being around 17,300 years old and is made up of pictures of large animals that once existed during that time period. The caves were opened in 1948 and were made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979.

    6. The Cave of Crystals – Chihuahua, Mexico
This cave that can be found in Chihuahua, Mexico was just barely discovered back in 2000 when scientists found the chasm below after they had drilled an aquifer and managed to pump out thousands of gallons of water. The crystal formations mind numbingly huge as they are measured at being way over 30 feet with a diameter of 4 feet. This is because the water that they formed in was overflowing with calcium sulfate and the cave was being heated by magma. The cave is so hot that most people can only stay inside for around ten minutes with the proper protective gear.

    5. The Glowworm Cave – Waitomo, New Zealand
This cave at Waitomo is located on the north island of New Zealand and as the name suggests it’s popularly known for the population of glowworms that have made this place their home. This cave happens to be a part of the Waitomo Cave system along with two other caves known as the Aranui and the Ruakuri Cave. The glowworm phenomenon is only unique to New Zealand which is why plenty of tourists pass through here each year.

    4. The Eiskogelhöhle Cave
Depicted in the picture below is what’s known as the “Halle de Circe” or as it's translated to “Hall of Circle”. The ice pillars can be found in the Eiskogelhöhle in Salzburg, Austria. The cave was first discovered back in 1877 Eduard Richter. The site was proclaimed as a highly protected site after the passing of the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act.

    3. The Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves – Werfen, Austria
Eisriesenwelt translates to “World of the Ice Giants,” which is fitting for this cave that is completely made out of natural limestone ice and can be found in Werfen, Austria. It is regarded as the largest ice cave on the planet and goes on for 26 miles. It’s estimated that the caves attract around 200,000 tourists annually that want to catch a glimpse at the ice formations. Whatever the season, these ice formations manage to stay frozen and cool year-round thanks to the area’s special weather conditions.

    2. Fingal's Cave – Staffa, Scotland
This is a sea cave that lies on an uninhabited island in Scotland called Staffa. Its formation was brought forth by hexagonally jointed basalt columns inside of a Paleocene lava flow. The cave has established quite a name for itself because of its naturally arched ceiling that creates creepy noises with the help of the sea’s waves echoing.

    1. The Cave of the Swallows – Aquismon, Mexico
This open air pit cave can be found at the Municipality of Aquismon in Mexico where it has a free fall drop that is measured at being 1082 feet from the floor of the cave to the lowest side of the opening and a This is classified as the second deepest pit in all of Mexico and the 11th in the whole world. The cave comes equipped with low temperatures and thick layers of vegetation near. You can also find a sinkhole that is estimated to go down an extra 1679 feet.

A cave or cavern is a hollow place in the ground, especially natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Caves form naturally by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. The word cave can also refer to much smaller openings such as sea caves, rock shelters, and grottos.

Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the environment that surrounds the caves. Exploring a cave for recreation or science may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking.

The formation and development of caves is known as speleogenesis. Caves are formed by various geologic processes and can be variable sizes. These may involve a combination of chemical processes, erosion from water, tectonic forces, microorganisms, pressure, and atmospheric influences.

It is estimated that the maximum depth of the cave can not be more than 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) due to the pressure of overlying rocks. For karst caves the maximum depth is determined on the basis of the lower limit of karst forming processes, coinciding with the base of the soluble carbonate rocks.

Most caves are formed in limestone by dissolution.

Solutional caves are the most frequently occurring caves and such caves form in rock that is soluble, such as limestone, but can also form in other rocks, including chalk, dolomite, marble, salt, and gypsum. Rock is dissolved by natural acid in groundwater that seeps through bedding-planes, faults, joints and so on. Over geological epochs cracks expand to become caves and cave systems.

The largest and most abundant solutional caves are located in limestone. Limestone dissolves under the action of rainwater and groundwater charged with H2CO3 (carbonic acid) and naturally occurring organic acids. The dissolution process produces a distinctive landform known as karst, characterized by sinkholes, and underground drainage. Limestone caves are often adorned with calcium carbonate formations produced through slow precipitation. These include flowstones, stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, soda straws and columns. These secondary mineral deposits in caves are called speleothems.

The portions of a solutional cave that are below the water table or the local level of the groundwater will be flooded.[6]

Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico and nearby Carlsbad Cavern are now believed to be examples of another type of solutional cave. They were formed by H2S (hydrogen sulfide) gas rising from below, where reservoirs of oil give off sulfurous fumes. This gas mixes with ground water and forms H2SO4 (sulfuric acid). The acid then dissolves the limestone from below, rather than from above, by acidic water percolating from the surface.

    9:14

Caves have always been a subject of curiosity with all their beauty. There are many caves around the world. It has always been exciting to see the secrets of these caves and discover them.
In addition to appreciating the beauty of these amazing caves, it is important that we understand how they came to be. There are various types of caves in the world, and they are formed in different ways.
Cave formation begins when acid rain is absorbed by the ground. Acid rain consists of rainwater mixed with carbon dioxide. As this acid rain travels through the ground, it comes in contact with solid rocks. If this rock is made of limestone or dolomite, the water will react chemically until it slowly dissolves the rock and a hollow space is formed. As the space becomes bigger, water begins to flow through it, eventually creating a stream or underground river. At this point, erosion and weathering begin and further cave formation. After a thousand years, the hollow space is already big enough for a human to enter. After a million years, chambers and columns form due to erosion and the meeting of stalactites (from the ceiling) and stalagmites (from the ground), and spectacular caves like the ones you've seen here are born!
In this video, we have listed the most popular and magnificent caves in the world for you. Here are the 10 most incredible caves in the world!

    9. Ice Cave, Russia - 0:43
This incredible cave near the Mutnovsky Volcano in Russia is the result of volcanic fed hot springs running through ice to create an ice cave that has a very shallow roof allowing sunlight to pass through. This cave was discovered by accident in 2012 and is nearly 980 ft. long.

    8. Cave of the Swallows, Mexico - 1:12
The Cave of the Swallows is an open air pit cave in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The mouth of the cave is 160 by 203 feet wide further widening to a room approximately 994 by 442 ft wide.[2] The floor of the cave is a 1214 ft free fall drop from the top making it the largest known cave shaft in the world, the second deepest pit in Mexico and perhaps the 11th deepest in the world.

    7. Waitomo Glowworm Cave, New Zealand - 1:45
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves on the North Island of New Zealand is known for it’s spectacular glowworms. This species of glowworms is found exclusively in New Zealand and are the size of an average mosquito. If you are so keen to see the glow worms you can join an organized boat tour that goes right underneath them.

    6. Phraya Nakhon Cave, Thailand - 2:15
Phraya Nakhon Cave in Thailand is located 4 hours south of Bangkok. It’s a fairly accessible cave to the public as it is only a 30 minute sweaty hike to reach the cave. King Chulalongkorn built the Kuha Karuhas pavilion inside the cave in 1890, when he fell in love with the beauty of the cave during his visit. If you want there is a Boat that will drop you off in some murky water at the entrance of the cave for 300 Baht but is only operational in good weather conditions.

    5. Antelope Canyon, USA - 2:45
Antelope Canyon is primarily a water eroded rock canyon located near the city of Page, in the northern part of the state of Arizona

    4. Batu Caves, Malaysia - 3:24
The Batu Caves contain a Buddhist temple created on the edge of a cliff in Myanmar, and is the unassuming entrance to Kyaut Sae Cave. Legend has it, that in the 13th century the massive cave was originally used as a place of hiding for locals who wanted to hide from the Mongols.

    3. Fingal’s Cave, Scotland - 3:43
Fingal’s Cave, located in on an uninhabited island called Staffa, is 72 feet tall and 270 feet deep. This sea cave a one of a kind with visually astonishing hexagonal columns made of basalt. It was formed by the cooling on the upper and lower surfaces of the solidified lava which resulted in contraction and fracturing.

    2. Son Doong Cave, Vietnam - 4:33
Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is the largest cave discovered on earth. It was discovered in 1991 by a local man but not fully explored until 2009. Son Doong Cave has a max depth of 490 feet and max length of 30,000 feet. It was created by a large vertical fault in the limestone that was flooded by river water which carved it’s way deep under the surface for millions of years. Having limestone walls that run in a nearly in a straight line allows for much greater stability, which is what has allowed this cave to get so big.

    1. Naica Mine, Mexico - 5:23
This incredible cave was accidentally found by the Naica mining company as they were drilling deep for silver, lead and zinc. They noticed a large crystal which appeared to be made of ice but considering the temperature inside the cave is 136 Fahrenheit or 58 degrees Celsius they knew immediately it was a large rare crystal growth.

There are millions of mysterious and fantastic-looking places on our planet. From the gorgeous waterfalls, and mountain peaks, to underwater reefs and volcanoes. But, perhaps, the most wonderful places to visit in the wild outdoors are the caves. These underground cavities can sometimes look pretty majestic!

Ever since the ancient times, these geological formations used to amaze and fascinate the first people. I mean, they were called “cavemen” for a reason, you know? Back in the Stone Age, many people have made caves their homes, that protected their families from natural elemental hazards as well as wild beasts.

If you asked a speleologist (scientist who studies caves, in case you didn’t know), he will tell you that there are several types of caves, but all of them are beautiful and original in their own way. Today we’ll travel to different continents and look into the deepest corners of our planet to find the 10 most amazing caves in the world.
