    Video Description

In 2016, NASA used the Suomi NPP weather satellite to create a high-resolution image of the earth at night. It can help us better understand the current developments and conflicts underway.
The amount of light pollution is most severe in heavily populated areas, as well as in regions of high prosperity.
In Europe, the Benelux region and the densely populated Po-Valley are so bright, that the individual towns blend into one big sea of light.
Especially in the Arab world, the extraction of oil creates bright lights from the flaring of gas.
And in Africa, you can trace the path of the Nile River, which, as the lifeline of Egypt, attracts civilization and is filled with commercial boats.
This image points to the global challenges posed by the steadily increasing world population. And while man-made borders can not be seen during the day, the lines of political origin become apparent at night but appear all the more absurd and artificial.
When viewed during daylight, the human influence on our planet is less obvious.
But this single image highlights the social divides and political strife from both the past and the present.

Inspired by a version of the opening sequence of this clip called 'What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth?' (Inspiration: I tracked down the original time-lapse sequence taken on the International Space Station (ISS) via NASA, found some additional ones there, including the spectacular Aurora Australis sequences, and set it to a soundtrack that almost matches the awe and wonder I feel when I see our home from above.

To those brave men and women who fly alone in the night to take us to the stars, we salute you.

    -----------------------

    Sequences:

    1. (0:00) North-to-south down the western coast of North and South America.
    2. (0:48) North-to-south over Florida, the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands.
    3. (0:56) South-East Asia, approaching the Philippine Sea
    4. (1:04) Western Europe, from France through Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East.
    5. (1:20) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean, approaching Australia
    6. (1:36) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean.
    7. (1:52) Aurora Australis, unknown location in the Southern Hemisphere.

Explanation from NASA: Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.

  • NASA | Earth at Night

    2:12

In daylight our big blue marble is all land, oceans and clouds. But the night - is electric.

This view of Earth at night is a cloud-free view from space as acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (Suomi NPP). A joint program by NASA and NOAA, Suomi NPP captured this nighttime image by the satellite's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The day-night band on VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, gas flares, and wildfires. This new image is a composite of data acquired over nine days in April and thirteen days in October 2012. It took 312 satellite orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of land surface.

This video uses the Earth at night view created by NASA's Earth Observatory with data processed by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center and combined with a version of the Earth Observatory's Blue Marble: Next Generation.

Beautiful views of planet Earth seen from the ISS. As seen from the Nasa space video ISS live stream - A real astronaut view of Earth!

THIS WILL SHOW LIVE and PRE-RECORDED FOOTAGE - depending on signal from the station or if the ISS is on the night side of Earth.

When the feed is live the words LIVE NOW will appear in the top left hand corner of the screen.
As the Space Station passes into a period of night every 45 mins video is unavailable - during this time, and other breaks in transmission, recorded footage is shown .
When back in daylight the live stream of earth will recommence

Thanks for watching with us on Space Videos - we're grateful to be able to share these wonderful views of our home -
This ISS live feed of planet earth from space is courtesy of Nasa Earth Viewing Cameras aboard the international space station. The station is crewed by #NASA astronauts as well as Russian Cosmonauts and a mixture of Japanese, Canadian and European astronauts as well.

    Before you ask -
Why can't we see the stars?

The cameras have a low light exposure for viewing Earth in daylight, so no stars are seen on the feeds, although the Sun, Moon and Venus can be seen. The Earth or moon on these videos is many hundreds of thousands of times brighter than the brightest stars and the cameras shoot at 60 frames per second - with an exposure that allows us to get a good view of the Earth. This exposure is too short to capture stars which are incredibly faint compared to the brightness of the planet. (Its down to photography rather than conspiracy!)

What do those different screens mean?

The bottom left screen shows photos of Earth taken by ISS astronauts.
The middle screen shows the current position of the Space Station (the large white H shape!)
The bottom right will is a 2nd live cam which will display timelapse video when the live stream is not available.

Myrtle Beach, in South Carolina, is located in an area known as the Grand Strand, where you find a 60-mile continuous beach from the border with North Carolina until one-third of the state coast. Myrtle Beach is the main city and the center of the Grand Strand, but along the coast, you find many nice beach communities, more laid-back. Murrells Inlet is one of them. We just spent 4 months in Myrtle Beach and got pretty familiar with the city. In this area, you can find some of the main South Carolina beaches.

  • Earth At Night -- Astounding Image from Space

    3:53

-- Earth At Night is perhaps one of the most spectacular, astounding views of the earth from space.

The image of Earth's city lights was actually a composite of hundreds of pictures created with data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). Originally designed to view clouds by moonlight, the OLS is also used to map the locations of permanent lights on the Earth's surface.

Using archival ink and the latest printing technology, The Freeman Institute is offering fine art made from an extremely high resolution image provided by the NASA scientists who created it. These fine art prints are available in various sizes:

    12 x 22 -- Petit
    22 x 44-- Medium
    34 x 68 -- Large
    44 x 88 -- Humongous!

We have also developed unusual all-occasion cards that can be used to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, promotion, graduation or some other event. They can also be used as thank you cards. Size: 11 long x 4.75 wide.

  • Earth lights seen from space

    4:38

To an observer in space, humanity’s footprints on the surface of the Earth are large and varied. They include the regular patterns of irrigated cropland, straight lines of roads and railways running across continents, reservoirs on river systems, and the cement rectangles of ports and seawalls along coastlines. But what about humanity’s signature footprint—cities? By day, cities viewed from space can blend into the countryside, or appear as gray smudges, depending on the style of development and size of the urban area.

  • NASA | NASA Sees Holiday Lights from Space

    4:29

It’s official — our holiday lights are so bright we can see them from space. Thanks to the VIIRS instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite, a joint mission between NASA and NOAA, scientists are presenting a new way of studying satellite data that can illustrate patterns in holiday lights, both during Christmas and the Holy Month of Ramadan. These new tools can provide new insights into how energy consumption behaviors vary across different cultural settings.

A note about the data: Because snow reflects so much light, the researchers could only analyze snow-free cities. They focused on the U.S. West Coast from San Francisco and Los Angeles, and cities south of a rough imaginary line from St. Louis to Washington, D.C.

  • HD views of cities at night from the ISS

    1:06

NASA's HDEV video system was declared End of Life in August. Since then the public has been missing seeing HD views of the earth.

On Monday November 18th NASA began streaming from a new video camera connected to node 2 facing forward.

This new camera (unlike HDEV) shows city lights at night time.

This video captures a few seconds when the ISS was passing over the Gulf of Mexico and passing over northwestern Florida (or therabouts) at 19:37 pm ET.

You can clearly see the city lights of several major US Cities.
