The Storm Prediction Center nailed this forecast calling for possible significant tornadoes in Southern Oklahoma and along the Red River in North Texas this afternoon. Storms were predicted to initiate on the I35 corridor and under a blue sky, a tornado watch was issued over the dry line. At 3PM a lone blip cumulus tower appeared on GOES satellite imagery right on target and by 3:38 had already matured into a severe warned storm over I35. At around 4pm a non-tornado warned storm dropped a tornado. In less than an hour this storm transitioned from a puffy white cloud into an explosive tornadic supercell! A tornado warning was issued shortly after by 4:07pm but a man was killed in his home.

Windy roads, hills and thick forests East of I35 make it very difficult to see and follow storms especially when they're cruising at over 50 knots as the crow flies. I was expecting fast cell motion and took advantage of an overlook to video the tornado. The cell motion was relatively slow at first. For about 10 minutes this dramatic tornado was ripping apart trees a quarter mile away from my perch. When the tornado crossed Indian Meridian Road, house and structure debris began to fly. You can see a house roof being lifted completely off the house before being tossed at a 40 degree angle into the air and obliterated a hundred feet off the ground and a large tree hovering above the ground for several seconds.

After the first tornado roped out, the storm cell hit the accelerator and began to process it's finale. Poor road networks forced me to do a highly dangerous chase maneuver called a hook slice where you drive through a blinding rear flank downdraft to view the beast. The motion of the mesocyclone was ridiculously fast in an End-of-the-world scene. Luckily this tornado traveled through mostly open country and earned a preliminary EF3 rating by the NWS. Unfortunately two people were killed in this tornado outbreak on May 9, 2016 but I was expecting way more carnage. Below is a link to the second mile wide tornado video...

  • TORNADOES of 2016 - An Incredible Year in 4K!

Incredible tornadoes, lightning, supercell storms and salamanders during the 2016 storm season in UHD 4K. In over two decades of storm chasing, I never dreamed I’d ever see a year like this. For licensing contact

    April 15, 2016 - Eva Oklahoma Tornado
My first and only tornado of April manifest itself as a misty carousel of suction vortices. Though producing well below average tornadoes for the month, April well over compensated with spectacular lightning storms.

May 7, 2016 - Eckley and Wray Colorado tornadoes
Three gorgeous tornadoes touched down and were highly visible from miles away.

    May 9, 2016 - Katie / Wynnwood & Sulphur Oklahoma tornadoes
34 tornadoes were reported, including one of the two strongest rated tornadoes of the year. The Katie / Wynnewood EF4 was responsible for one death, and the destruction of several homes. Along with extensive ground scouring and severe tree damage, some vehicles were thrown and mangled beyond recognition. The second tornado from this storm grew to over a mile wide and touched down near Sulphur Oklahoma. Unanchored homes, mobile homes and outbuildings were leveled or completely swept away.
A large metal storage garage would be swept away and the vehicles inside it thrown up to 280 yards. (over 250 meters)
A young man who was taking shelter in his home's most interior room had his entire house around him violently demolished. Only the two walls and toilet he was clinging to would remain. He would walk away without a scratch.

    May 16, 2016 - Felt Oklahoma Tornadoes
I witnessed two tornadoes on this day. One emerged from a wall of rain and roped out. The other tornado was a nub funnel cloud and brief spin up.

May 21, 2016 - Leoti Kansas Tornadoes and Supercell
Early forecasts on May 21st suggested tornadoes were unlikely however three small tornadoes would touch down, but the show stopper was the incredible mesocyclone structure and continuous garage of cloud to ground lightning strikes.

May 22, 2016 - Canadian River Valley Tornadoes
A few tornadoes touched down near the Canadian River valley, however I was late on the scene and only caught the end of the last tornado.

    May 23, 2016 - Turkey Texas tornado
After the sun set, a large wedge tornado was revealed with occasional lightning strikes and power flashes. For the second day in a row, i missed the show by only moments.

May 24, 2016 - Dodge City Tornado Outbreak
A dozen incredibly photogenic tornadoes moved slowly over good road networks. Though some damage occurred to several homes, there were zero fatalities reported. The audio of the tornado sirens in this video was bot eerie and beautiful. Two different tornado sirens harmonized through the streets as tornadoes just passed to the west, missing the more populated areas.

    May 25, 2016 - Abilene / Chapman Tornado
This EF4 was the other highest rated tornado of 2016.
It completely swept away a split-level home and bent railroad tracks horizontally. Numerous vehicles including a Freightliner truck and a combine harvester were tossed and mangled beyond recognition. Despite being on the ground for 90 minutes, No fatalities were reported.

Music Composed and performed by Pecos Hank Schyma and Dan Workman.

  • Tornado - STARING UP the MOUTH of a FUNNEL CLOUD - Indiahoma Oklahoma 10-21-2017

Filmed in 4K. A look at a magnificent funnel cloud and weak, brief tornado near Indiahoma Oklahoma on 10-21-2017 on a tornado warned supercell. The SPC issued an Enhanced Risk for Severe weather along with a 5% chance of tornadoes in North Texas and most of Oklahoma.

A triple point intersection with a dry line and cold front set up in extreme SW Oklahoma for a Second Season October severe weather event.

Several supercells erupted off of the dryline on Saturday afternoon, 10-21-2017. One storm would become cyclic and tornadic and produce a large rotating wall cloud, a beautiful ghostly and wispy white funnel cloud, and a couple of tornadoes late in its lifecycle.

Storm Track and Chaser Aaron Jayjack tracked this storm across southwest Oklahoma, through Lawton and northward. A beautiful funel cloud dropped down and pointed right down at the storm tracker.

  • MASTER VERSION *CLOSE RANGE* The Dalton/Ashby, MN EF4 Tornado - Full Chase and Life Cycle

Like the video please? Sub? :)

With 2.7+ million views on the original video, I’ve made a master edited version with 11+ added minutes of footage from this day including footage from a black bear I saw while chasing and what I witnessed after the EF4! Enjoy!

    Original Post
“It was honestly a dream chase. One of the best chases I’ve ever been on in my 10-year career here chasing in the midwest. It was amazing to witness this slow-moving photogenic supercell that produced a drill bit photogenic tornado that was on the ground for over 40+ minutes! It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Unfortunately, there is a dark side to nature’s beauty. It’s hard being in a hobby where you are sometimes the active watcher in other people’s dismay. It’s a tension that not only myself but I know a lot of other storm chasers have wrestled with over the years. No, we do not want to see property or lives being destroyed, yet we are mesmerized by the power weather can do. All of that to say, I love weather but wrestle with its destructive nature. And within that wrestling, learning how to trust God in the middle of all of it.”

    Details of the Tornado:
The National Weather Service has officially rated the tornado as an EF4 with winds up to 170mph. It was on the ground for 40+ minutes and tracked 11 miles to the northeast near the towns of Dalton and Ashby, MN. Injuring 2 and causing 1 death (RIP Seth Nelson)

    - There were several other people in front of me that checked on the homes that had damage before I got there.
    - I don’t believe God is the author of natural disasters. As a Christian, I currently believe tornadoes are a result of the fall when Adam and Eve first sinned (Genesis 3).

  • GREATEST STORMS ON EARTH - Best Of Tornado Alley

Visually stunning, mini documentary of the best tornado footage, lightning strikes, supercells and most beautiful storms I've documented. Not only is Mother Nature’s fury amplified with these explosive storms, So is her beauty.

    For licensing contact

I have devoted a large portion of my life to documenting thunderstorms from South Texas to North Dakota, and from California to Florida. The storms notorious in Tornado Alley can be terribly powerful, however the side I'm most interested in is her beauty. This is a collection of my all time most beautiful and greatest moments storm chasing. I have strived to capture steady shots in the worst conditions possible with no shaking, or windshield wipers. Though I've had many great encounters in my portfolio over the last 25 years, this video is mostly the last decade simply due to the increase in camera quality. Many great 1080p HD captures were left out to make room for the 4K storm footage. I hope you enjoy :D

Roughly 75% of the ENTIRE planet’s tornadoes are reported in the United States. Here, unique geography is ultimately responsible for the high frequency of extremely powerful storm cells. Though tornadoes most often make the headlines, all this excessive energy in the atmosphere can result in an freak show of other wonders.
Many of the phenomena we are familiar with and others we are still just discovering. Not only is Mother Nature’s fury amplified with these explosive storms, So is her beauty.

Storm updrafts most frequently erupt near late afternoon when daytime temperatures reach their highest.

Rainbows are caused by the reflection, refraction and dispersion of sunlight in rain droplets. The secondary rainbow is visible when the light that is reflected twice inside raindrops is bright enough for detection. And Because this light is reflected twice, the order of the secondary rainbow’s colors are reversed.

The concentrated downdraft of heaviest rain and hail is the core
This icy waterfall often has a turquoise hue.
In the evening or morning when golden hour sun light mixes in, the storm can turn an eerie green.

In a wind sheared environment cell updrafts may rotate, becoming a mesocyclone. Mesocyclone’s are the defining character of the rarest and most powerful breed of thunderstorms, the supercell. And it’s these supercells that are responsible for the majority of the worlds strong tornadoes. Thankfully, most of these tornadoes occur over sparsely populated areas causing little damage if any.

Thunderstorms have the ability to create electric fields by separating pools of positive and negative charges. When oppositely charged regions become strong enough, a flash of lightning temporarily equalizes the difference. Most flashes occur within the storm, but roughly 1 in 5 initiate by a downward moving stepped leader that connects to the ground. This is a cloud-to-ground flash. The more powerful the thunderstorm, the less time needed for the regions to rebuild their energetic charges.

UPWARD MOVING LIGHTNING or Ground-to-cloud lightning:
On rare occasions lightning initiates from tall objects on the ground and propagates upward into the storm. During extraordinary events, two or three GROUND-TO-CLOUD flashes occur And during extremely rare conditions over a dozen bolts of lightning can leap up into the sky.

Near the ceiling of our troposphere, pouch like mammatus clouds hank underneath the storms anvil cloud. High above the anvil cloudds, mysterious large scale discharges burst into color. Scientists call these Transient Luminous Events (TLEs).

Music Score by: Dan Workman, Christine Wu & Hank Schyma

  • TORNADOES OF 2020 - Is it over yet?

Best tornado, lightning and severe storm footage from 2020 in a tour of Tornado Alley's highs and lows from March through July. 1075 confirmed tornadoes have been tallied in the US in 2020 including the third widest tornado ever recorded.

    APRIL 12 Soso Mississippi EF4
On Easter Sunday a large, extremely dangerous, long tracking tornado was underway in Mississippi. Doppler radar revealed an impressive supercell, well defined hook echo and distinct lofted debris signature. But up close, vague walls of gray, shrouding rain curtains and a veil of tall trees obscured a hell on Earth. Prior to striking Soso Mississippi, the tornado grew to 2.25 miles wide. The THIRD widest tornado ever documented. Along a 68 mile damage path, it debarked and leveled entire forests. Cars and trucks were thrown hundreds of yards, mangled beyond recognition. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, some completely leveled and swept away
including some well built brick and concrete structures. With estimated wind speeds up to 190 mph (310 km/h) this tornado earned an EF4 rating. Following closely behind, another large EF3 tornado trained close to the previous tornado's track.

APRIL 19 Southwest of Hattiesburg MS
Seven Days later, another significant tornado risk targeted Mississippi. Chasing over the previous week’s damage paths compounded the danger as trees were still weakened and downed. An intensifying high precipitation storm brought darkness early along with a barrage of powerful positive ground flashes. Not only do positive ground flashes look different from typical negative ground flashes, they often sound different. The thunder from these mega-bolts hits you like the shock wave of an explosion. Deeply embedded in rain, an unseeable mile wide tornado cruised 54 miles across the state at a ground speed of 55mph.
At its peak intensity, The EF4 demolished two well constructed homes, leaving clean slabs in its wake.

    APRIL 22, Madill Oklahoma
A low precipitation supercell approaching Madill Oklahoma setting the stage for a highly visible tornado. Right out the gate, it earned EF2 status, snapping power poles and flinging trees as it passed just south of town. A large section of a warehouse was demolished and under a rainbow, mobile homes were completely destroyed.

    MAY Low Tornado Activity
April was an active month for tornado activity in the US. Usually May is the peak month, however in strong contrast to 2019, May 2020 had extremely low tornado activity. Forecastable chase-able storms mostly organized into linear modes. Though often ominous and photogenic, Lines or squalls are much less efficient at producing violent tornadoes.

    JUNE Low Tornado Activity
June followed May's suit with lower than average forecastable & chase-able tornado activity.

    JULY High Tornado Activity
After most of us had thrown in the towel, July surprised storm chasers with higher than average tornado activity in the Northern Plains. On July 8th, and incredibly photogenic EF4 tornado touched down near Ashby Minnesota. A high base storm allowed the sun to light the tornado and a vibrant rainbow often accompanied the bright white tornado depending on the perspective. Storm Chaser Melonie Metz was kind enough to license her amazing footage for this video.

    2020 Climate
2020 had lower than average tornado activity with 1075 confirmed tornadoes. (Average is 1250)

Climatologically, the Atlantic hurricane season exceeded records
with 30 named storms, 12 of which landed on the continental U.S.
    - 30 named storms - Previous record 28
    - 12 named U.S. storm continental landfalls - Previous record 9
    - 6 hurricanes made U.S. landfall - tied previous record

The Western US endured the most active wildfire year on record [1983 to present]
and the global average annual temperature was the 2nd warmest on record
and the 5th warmest in the 126-year record in the U.S

Blood. Sweat. Tears. Joy. That's what this spring was for me. The miles, the grind, the failing, the epic days missed, the lack of sleep, the jubilation, the friendships strengthened, and the time away from my family. And when the chasing was all done...wondering, was worth it all?

    Heck yeah it was.

I had three goals this spring: Get a tornado on time-lapse, capture the best footage I possibly could, and chase as much as my schedule would allow. That ended up totalling 18 chase days. 20,000 miles driven. Almost 60,000 time-lapse frames shot. Nine total states. Hours and hours and hours of editing. All between April 15th and June 15th.

And the tornado? Not only did I get one, but I got six more. On April 15th, the very first day out, I saw two tornadoes in the Texas Panhandle. May 9th was Wynnewood and Sulphur in Oklahoma (both in this film), as well as Trinidad on June 13th in Colorado. And while most tornadoes will be obvious in the film, you'll have to use a keen eye to spot the first two, which appear at 2:08 and 2:13. The Wynnewood tornado, which you will see at the very end of the film, was one of the most surreal moments of my life. I was so focused on keeping up with the storm that day, that I barely realized that I had captured what I'd been working so hard to get. I texted my wife a few photos and simply said Baby I did it. It wasn't until she responded Babe, it's beautiful. I'm so happy for you that I completely lost it - live stream going on in the truck, people watching, and tears streaming down my face.

But that's how much this spring meant to me, and how hard I was going. Most of the time exhausted. My typical routine would be to leave Phoenix sometime in late afternoon, drive all night, sleep an hour or two in the truck and then chase the next few days. And then drive home all night again. I did whatever I could to to minimize the time away from my family. Heck, I once even shot a wedding all day, left the venue, and drove all night to chase. I didn't want to miss anything this spring.

What's awesome to me is that some of my best stuff came from marginal days, where it took some effort and crazy luck to get sick storm structures. Those were the surprises - amazing clips worthy of the final product despite the chase day starting out subpar. Combined together with everything else, I think it's some of my best footage to date!

Technical note...this film marks the first time I used my Canon 5DSR and 11-24 for time-lapse, which I bought right before the spring started (Thank you Martin Heck for the help!). I'm not 100% sure of course, but I believe the tornadoes in the film may be some of the first ever captured in 8K resolution. The 50 megapixels that camera offers was huge for being able to zoom into certain shots and still maintain fantastic quality and sharpness. Couldn't be happier with that beast. I also used my trusty 5D3 for the tighter shots, with the 35mm, 50mm or 135mm.

I have to mention Kerry Muzzey here...he has surpassed being kind to me. This is the 3rd or 4th time he's donated a song to one of my projects and I'm forever grateful. His music is powerful, haunting at times, and always, always perfect for the story I want to tell. This year I knew right away that Found was the song I would use. Please visit the links above to support his work!

There are a lot of names to thank which are listed at the end of the film. I owe them all so much for helping me this spring. Nowcasting, making me turn around when I was headed to Montana, teaching me about forecasting, helping me choose the right new camera, editing input, and just being good friends. I am very blessed to have some amazing people around me!

Most of all to my wife, Jina. She knows...every year I'm gone longer. I'm sure next year could be worse. But through it all, even when it's really tough, she's always right behind me. Making things work when I'm away. There are never enough words to cover how amazing she is. But she knows and I know - this film wouldn't happen without her.

I think that's about it! Thanks to everyone for the kind words of support all year. I truly hope you enjoy this one! On to Monsoon 3!

  • **4K UHD** Crowell-Lockett-Vernon, TX Tornadoes April 23, 2021

After a piss poor 2020 chase season my tornado drought ended in spectacular fashion.

My chase partners Dakota Maynard, Dalton Coody, and I observed 5 tornadoes (including twin tornadoes) from a cyclic supercell that formed near Childress and moved east-southeast across Northwest Texas. The tornadoes occurred mostly over open farm land, but some structures did sustain damage. No injuries were reported.

2018 Year In Review: Despite a rough spring for storm chasing, our team was able to document several tornadoes, including the Tescott, KS wedge. After the historically slow tornado season, the Atlantic hurricane season sprung to life generating 15 named storms. We intercepted all four tropical systems that made landfall in the US: Tropical Storm Alberto, Tropical Storm Gordon, Hurricane Florence, and Hurricane Michael.

Join our team in supporting the ongoing relief efforts in communities affected by these storms. We recommend Team Rubicon, an organization created by veterans that is dedicated to the long haul.

  • Brainerd, MN, Tornado Warned Storm, 06.19.2016 4K/UHD

This video shows the highlights from my chase of an incredibly strong tornado warned storm on June 19th 2016 just north of Brainerd, MN. Reached the storm just after the initial warning was issued. Funnel clouds were observed right away. As it strengthened however it became very high precipitation and two separate areas of rotation began to develop. Was unable to stay in front of it as it was moving extremely quickly and ended up between North areas of rotation. Did capture what I believe was a rain wrapped tornado crossing the road in front of me near the end of the video.
