  • Perseverance Rover’s Descent and Touchdown on Mars

    3:26

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance mission captured thrilling footage of its rover landing in Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The real footage in this video was captured by several cameras that are part of the rover's entry, descent, and landing suite. The views include a camera looking down from the spacecraft's descent stage (a kind of rocket-powered jet pack that helps fly the rover to its landing site), a camera on the rover looking up at the descent stage, a camera on the top of the aeroshell (a capsule protecting the rover) looking up at that parachute, and a camera on the bottom of the rover looking down at the Martian surface.

The audio embedded in the video comes from the mission control call-outs during entry, descent, and landing.

  • NASA’S Perseverance Rover’s First 360 View of Mars

    1:01

This video shows the first 360-degree view of the landing site of NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars, as captured by the rover’s color Navigation Cameras, or Navcams. The Navcams are on the remote sensing mast (or “head”) of the rover. Perseverance possesses the most cameras of any Mars rover to date, with 19 on the rover. Perseverance landed on Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. These images were obtained on February 20, 2021.

A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

    28:31

Millions of miles from Earth lies a dusty, cold, desert world with a very thin atmosphere. You know this planet as Mars…but it hasn’t always been this way. There’s evidence that the Red Planet was much wetter and warmer, with a thicker atmosphere, billions of years ago. Could it also have supported life? NASA’s Perseverance rover launches next week and will explore the Red Planet to collect rock and soil samples, which may preserve ancient signs of life. Join experts on #NASAScience Live Wednesday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m. EDT, to learn more about this robotic astrobiologist.

  • Looking for Life on Mars | NOVA | PBS

    54:03

Follow along as NASA launches the Mars 2020 Mission, perhaps the most ambitious hunt yet for signs of ancient life on Mars.

The spacecraft will blaze into the Martian atmosphere at some 12,000 miles per hour and attempt to lower the Perseverance Rover in the rocky Jezero Crater, home to a dried-up river delta scientists think could have harbored life. Perseverance will comb the area for signs of life and collect samples for possible return to Earth. Traveling onboard is a four-pound helicopter that will conduct a series of test flights—the first on another planet.

During its journey, Perseverance will also test technology designed to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, in hopes that the gas could be used for fuel—or for humans to breathe—on future missions.

  • NASA releases new video from Perseverance rover

    3:19

(22 Feb 2021) NASA on Monday released the first high-speed video of a spacecraft landing on Mars.
It's such good quality and so amazing that members of the rover's landing team say they feel as though they're riding along.
The footage shows the Martian surface below, with the rover getting slowly closer to landing, and dust on the surface being disturbed before it finally touches down.
The Perseverance rover landed last Thursday near an ancient river delta in Jezero Crater.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory landing team shared the one-minute video, after spending the weekend binge-watching it.
Five of the six descent cameras provided stunning footage of the supersonic parachute opening and the dust kicking up as the rocket engines lowered.
NASA equipped the spacecraft with a record 25 cameras and two microphones, many of which were turned on during last week's descent.
It's the ninth time that NASA has successfully landed on Mars __ and the fifth rover.
As it did with 2012′s Curiosity rover — still roaming 2,300 miles (3,750 kilometers) away — NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed Perseverance descending beneath its massive parachute.

  • Tour of Mars with Perseverance and NASA Experts!

    53:27

NASA guided tour of Mars will tap Perseverance’s most flexible camera. NASA is preparing a must-see video tour of Mars today, tapping Perseverance’s high-tech Mastcam-Z robotic eyes to give a new glimpse of the red planet. It’s an opportunity not only to see Mars in full 360-degrees, but also to get a guided view of what the freshly-landed rover can see and why scientists are eager to explore it.

Perseverance touched down on Mars on Thursday, February 18, and since then the rover’s systems have been gradually coming online. Some of the earliest instrumentation to be powered up are the cameras: Perseverance has 23 of those in total, though most are slightly different and address different needs.

Mastcam-Z is in fact two cameras, not one. Mounted to the “head” of the rover, so that it can be moved around, the camera system has uses two 2-megapixel sensors that are positioned 9.5 inches apart. That way, it can capture 3D images of the Martian surface. Just as important, though, is the “Z” suffix: that’s a reference to the zoom built into the two cameras. Curiosity, the previous Mars rover, didn’t have a zoom on any of its optics, but with its zoom Perseverance will be able to see long distances without having to first trundle over. In fact, NASA says, it can “see features as small as a house fly – all the way from a distance that’s about the length of a soccer field.”

Because of the way it’s mounted, Mastcam-Z can rotate a full 360-degrees for panoramas around the rover. It can also look a full 180-degrees up and down. It’s these talents which NASA will be taking full advantage of at its video walkthrough and guided tour, which starts at 4pm EST (1pm PST) on Thursday, February 25.

    Speakers:
    • Jim Bell — Mastcam-Z principal investigator, Arizona State University
    • Elsa Jensen — Mastcam-Z uplink lead, Malin Space Science Systems
    • Kjartan Kinch — Mastcam-Z calibration target lead, Niels Bohr Institute of The University Of Copenhagen
