  • Meet First Mother & Daughters Airline Pilots at Delta: piloting is a family business

    3:26

For a mother and her 2 daughters at Delta, piloting is a family business: On a warm Los Angeles afternoon, Kelly Jacobson is inspecting nearly every external inch of her 200,000-pound aircraft through the thick aviator sunglasses she fuses with her Delta Air Lines uniform. She'll be flying the Boeing 757 alongside a pilot she has a lot of hours with outside the cockpit. Several families inside the terminal are collecting their belongings in preparation to board the more-than-three-hour flight to Atlanta. Some of the children are sporting fresh plastic wings pinned to their shirt, a gift from the pilots. Wendy Rexon and Kelly Jacobson are mother and daughter; today is almost like every other day. They have already begun a routine they've completed hundreds of times individually but only a couple times together: arrive at the airport an hour before scheduled departure, debrief with the gate agent, walk around the aircraft and a pre-flight checklist so ingrained in their memories it only takes about 30 seconds. Kate Rexon, also a Delta pilot, flies the Airbus A320 for the airline, so aviation is the family business. We would run around in their captain hats and have fun as little kids and go on their trips with them, Kelly, Wendy's oldest daughter, told ABC News. It was definitely part of the family business, and I started flying when I was 16, and I had the pleasure of being Kate's instructor and she was my first student. Kelly was my instructor. She was my instructor and I didn't treat her like a sister because at that point, you know, she wasn't, Kate responded. She was my teacher and that I think it made us both grow. Kate, the younger daughter, said she dabbled in other career aspirations, but she too ultimately fell in love with aviation.
A Rexon vacation wasn't like most. At an age when many parents wouldn't dream of letting teenagers drive during a long road trip, Kate and Kelly wore the proverbial captain's hat at an altitude of several thousand feet.
When Kate and I were building time in little airplanes we go on vacations and mom and dad are in the back seat, Kelly described, with her mother and former flight instructor there next to her.
Mom would sit actually in the back of the airplane. It was a little four-seater and she'd say, 'no, no.'
Wendy describes the opportunity for her daughters as a safer alternative to other temptations: Other parents would say, 'How can you let your children fly airplanes?'
The mother continued, Boy, I'd much rather give them the keys to the airplane than go with their friends out late at night to parties. You know, driving in the cars.
Reaching for the sky: But not many young women grow up in a family of pilots -- Wendy's husband is a pilot at American Airlines, and she got started at 16. It's no secret there's a shortage of female pilots at U.S. carriers. Only 7% of pilots are women, according to 2017 data from the Federal Aviation Administration. Wendy credits programs at airlines around the country, like Delta's Women Inspiring our Next Generation, which promote to young women careers in aviation. The issue, she said, boils down to a lack of awareness. They just don't think about it as an option, Kate said. But the family hopes women like themselves can inspire the next generation. We're honored to be advocates for young women to join the field, and and just the industry in general, said Kelly, alongside her mother and sister. Ready for anything: While all three women describe their experience flying together as a dream come true, there have been challenges -- as there are with any profession. Wendy and Kelly first flew together professionally in February on a flight out of New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, and the trip didn't go exactly as planned -- there was an extra twist. The flight was taking off for Los Angeles when smoke and fumes materialized in the cockpit, not an exceedingly rare occurrence, but an event that requires the plane to divert before conditions worsen. Wendy and Kelly decided they were going to return to JFK. Delta 1975, we're going to stop on the runway, we need them to come check us out, there's no smoke in the cabin, but there's smoke in the cockpit, we're gonna open the windows, Kelly is heard telling the JFK control tower on air traffic control audio obtained by ABC News via LiveATC.net. The flight landed safely, and the airline got the passengers to Los Angeles, but it was Wendy's first time seeing her daughter pilot an emergency landing. She was fantastic, Wendy said. It was it was a difficult situation that was made easier because of that because of the training and because of her competence. Wendy's pride in her daughters and their pride in each other is evident. Kelly is one of the hardest working people that I know and she's a leader, Kate said.

  • Female Fighter Pilots Teach Us to Spread Our Wings | Allison Cappelaere Righter | TEDxLeonardtown

    17:47

U.S. Navy Lieutenant Valerie Cappelaere Delaney was an inspirational leader and naval aviator. Following her tragic death, her legacy became an integral link in the chain that bonds female aviators. Her story is told by Allison Righter, who knew Valerie as both a hero and big sister. Through Allison and her family's work, Valerie’s legacy continues to inspire young women to spread their wings and soar. Mrs. Allison Cappelaere Righter, a Nutrition Instructor at the Culinary Institue of America and Maryland native, started the Wings for Val Foundation in 2013 in honor of her sister, Lieutenant Valerie Cappelaere Delaney. Valerie was a Navy fighter pilot who died in a training mission at the age of 26. After her sister's death, nearly 200 female military aviators sent in their coveted aviator wings to honor her sacrifice and celebrate the collective strength of all women aviators. This overwhelming response prompted Allison and her family to start the Wings for Val Foundation as a way to carry on Val's incredible legacy. The Foundation supports other women pursuing careers in aviation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  • Airline Pilots Use These Small Computers For Almost Everything

    5:47

Cockpit scenes filmed under Part 91 with permission from Envoy Air, Inc… Airline pilots use the FMS, or Flight Management System, almost as much as the autopilot or flight controls. If you're a student pilot or flight instructor, you've probably never used one before, and it's one of the most important things you'll learn as you get started. The FMS is used for anything from programming routes, messaging dispatch, and printing weather reports, to calculating fuel and managing crossing altitudes.

While in some cases we are legal to fly without even a single operating FMS, that's highly unusual and the FMS remains one of the most important resources we have in the flight deck.

Not so long ago Australians were refusing to fly with female pilots. Aminta Hennessy was one of those pilots who had to fight to be accepted in the cockpit. She was inspired by her friend and mentor Nancy Bird Walton to enter the aviation industry and Ms Hennesy became the first Australian woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo.

  • Domestic Flights Resume | BOOM | Govindraj Ethiraj, Jitendra Bhargava, Sam Thomas & Sudhakar Reddy

    31:04

Domestic flights resume in India from May 25, 2020, after nearly two months of non-activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conditions that passengers will fly in will now be different, with multiple regulations laid down to ensure coronavirus remains under control and social distancing is maintained.

Sudhakara Reddy, National President, Air Passengers Association of India, maintains that is going to be tough for people to fly - there are too many conditions like uploading medical certificates with airlines, installing Aarogya Setu App, multiple thermal scanning will be an important load factor.

Sam Thomas, President , Air Line Pilots Association, says that the pilot community is confused about regulations - they weren't consulted before passing these regulations. If pilots wear masks while flying and communication in the cockpit is misinterpreted, it can lead to catastrophic outcomes.

Jitendra Bhargava, Former ED, Air India, puts the onus of safety on the passengers and stresses on a need to behave. The Indian habit of queuing to get out of the flight as soon as the flight has landed will violate social distancing standards.

Govindraj Ethiraj interviews Sudhakara Reddy, Sam Thomas and Jitendra Bhargava on the possible issues and outcomes when domestic flights will resume in India.

  • All Female Airline Pilot Crew For The First Time In Irans Aviation Industry زنان خلبان

    4:47

All-female cockpit crew of MD-80 makes history in Iran:
    October 14, 2019 (Persian calendar 1398/07/22)
In a first for Iranian aviation, a female captain and female first officer piloted a round trip Tehran—Mashhad flight on October 14, making them the first women to have piloted a passenger flight in Iran without the assistance of male colleagues.
The past few years have seen Iran relaxing its rules on women taking top roles in its aviation industry. A woman, Farzaneh Sharafabadi, served as the CEO of flagship IranAir for more than 12 months between 2017 and 2018.
Captain Neshat Jahandari and her first officer Forouz Firouzi flew 160 passengers on the flight from Tehran to the northeastern city of Mashhad, and then returned with 171 passengers to the Iranian capital.
“Today is a special and unforgettable day in the Iranian aviation industry, and for the first time the guidance of the plane has been conducted by two Iranian female pilots,” Jahandari wrote on her Instagram.
Prior to this all-female flight, Jahandari was in the news for being the first co-pilot to fly in Iran with her husband as captain.
Women in Iran started learning to fly planes as far back as 1940. The first woman in Iran to receive a pilot's licence was Princess Fatemeh Pahlavi, the first Pahlavi king’s tenth child.
Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the establishment of the Islamic Republic created under the guidance of Shi’ite Islamic jurists and clerics, women’s rights in Iran were heavily scaled back. That included curbs on their right to fly planes.
However, in recent years the rules have been relaxed, allowing women to take roles in aviation closed off to them for the past 30 years.
