  • New: Mars In 4K

    10:09

A world first. New footage from Mars rendered in stunning 4K resolution. We also talk about the cameras on board the Martian rovers and how we made the video.

The cameras on board the rovers were the height of technology when the respective missions launched.

    A question often asked is:
‘Why don’t we actually have live video from Mars?’

Although the cameras are high quality, the rate at which the rovers can send data back to earth is the biggest challenge. Curiosity can only send data directly back to earth at 32 kilo-bits per second.

Instead, when the rover can connect to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we get more favourable speeds of 2 Megabytes per second.

However, this link is only available for about 8 minutes each Sol, or Martian day.

As you would expect, sending HD video at these speeds would take a long long time. As nothing really moves on Mars, it makes more sense to take and send back images.

  • Mars: What happened to the Spirit Rover?

    16:05

    'I can't move and it's getting cold'.

If the Spirit rover could speak, this is what it would have said.

Our story begins in 2004, January 4th.

The spirit rover slams into the dusty surface of Mars, bouncing on it’s airbags 28 times before coming to rest.

It landed about 13 kilometres away from the targeted site, in the Gusev Crater.

The team at NASA informally named the landing site ‘Columbia Memorial Station’, in honour of the astronauts who were lost in the Columbia disaster, just the year before in 2003.

After a successful landing, Spirit opens its eyes. This is the first colour image Spirit captured, which was, at that time; the highest definition image ever taken on another planet.

So far the mission was running smoothly, but that was all about to change.

On January 21st, Spirit’s 17th Martian day, mission control suddenly lost contact with the rover.

The next day, Spirit sent a short beep, confirming that it had received a signal from Earth but that the rover believed it was in some sort of fault mode.

At the time, NASA engineers speculated that the rover was stuck in a reboot loop. Spirit was programmed to restart if it detected a fault, but if that fault occurred during reboot, it would continue to reboot indefinitely.

This meant that the rover was not going into sleep mode, therefore wasting it’s energy and running the risk of overheating. This error was taken very seriously and could have signalled the end of Spirit’s journey.

Luckily, on Spirit’s 19th day, the team at NASA announced that the problem was actually with Spirit’s flash memory, and the issue was software related. The fix was as easy as deleting some files carried on the rover’s flash drives and reformatting the system.

By day 32, Spirit was back up and running.

Spirit would go on to make more discoveries and run into more trouble, watch the video to see spirit's full journey.

  • Nasa Insider Leaks Disturbing Mars Rover Photos

    10:07

NASA's Mars Rover's photos were leaked, and it looks like the US Government has been hiding some of the images that could prove alien life on the red planet.

Is there life on mars or maybe even the moon? NASA photos have revealed some strange things over the years. Images from lunar orbiters seem to show evidence of aliens on the moon and alien made structures. Conspiracy theorists have claimed photos show alien ruins and compounds. Conspiracy theorists claim this is evidence that there was one alien life on the moon, but a simple explanation may be the truth. Mars rover photos have shown what looks like alien remains, alien statues, alien creatures and alien buildings. NASA says many of these objects can be easily explained, but conspiracy theorists argue that these photos show evidence of life on mars now or in the past. Cannonballs on mars may be evidence of a martian war, and pyramids on mars may be evidence of intelligent life. What do you make of these photos? Are these images simply rock formations or are they actually the work of aliens? There are many interpretations. Watch the video to see some very fascinating leaked mars and moon pictures, and then you can decide for yourself. Anonymous even claims that NASA has already made contact with advanced alien life and is just waiting for the right time to reveal this shocking information to the world. Mars Rover Perseverance is set to land on Mars in 2021, and many more photos of mars will be revealed in the future. Do you believe there is life on mars or even the moon? Let us know what you think.

NASA has sent its Perseverance rover to collect samples, search for signs of past microbial life and even unleash an experimental helicopter.
    Rover Name: Perseverance
Main Job: Seek signs of ancient life and collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) for possible return to Earth.
    Launch: July 30, 2020
    Landing: Feb. 18, 2021
    Landing Site: Jezero Crater, Mars
Perseverance launched on July 30, 2020, kicking off a months-long journey through space. It is scheduled to arrive at the red planet early in 2021. Landing is a tense process, but if all goes well, Perseverance will join Curiosity as NASA's only functioning rovers on Mars.

    Jezero Crater
NASA's Perseverance rover will touch down in a previously unexplored part of Mars called Jezero Crater. The space agency announced the winning landing site in late 2018.

This Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image shows the Jezero Crater delta region. The landing site in Jezero Crater offers geologically rich terrain, with landforms reaching as far back as 3.6 billion years old, that could potentially answer important questions in planetary evolution and astrobiology, said NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen.

  • Why The Mars Helicopter Wont Fly at Night

    7:27

The Mars helicopter, ‘Ingenuity’, along with the new rover ‘Perseverance’ are scheduled to land on February 18th 2021. The local time on Mars will be approximately 3.45pm at Jezero Crater. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab have stated the best time to fly Ingenuity is around 11am local time, and flying at night will be strictly forbidden.

Today’s video will feature all you need to know about flying on Mars, how Martian time zones are calculated and why flying at night is a bad idea. We hope you enjoy.

There is one standard time on Mars, developed by astronomers in the 1830’s. It’s called Mars Coordinated Time, or MTC for short. All of the rovers have offset times which correspond to MTC, which is known as the ‘Prime Meridian’.

So why does this matter? Why is it so important that we know the local time on Mars?

Just like on Earth, depending on where the Sun is in the sky, things change. Temperature, visibility, wind speeds, and even the density of the atmosphere.

Firstly, temperature variations on Mars are wild. In the Martian summer near the equator, temperatures can reach a cosy 20 Degrees Celsius. However, during the night temperatures can plummet to -73 Degrees Celsius. At these frosty temperatures, critical mechanisms on board the rovers can fail. For this reason, most Martian landers have built in heating systems, to survive the night time extremes.

This issue is what led to the demise of the Opportunity rover. After experiencing a global Martian dust storm which blocked it’s solar panels, the battery was expended. During the following days and nights, the heating system was unable to power up, meaning the extreme temperatures irreversibly damaged the rover’s internal components.

NASA have avoided this problem in future rovers, using nuclear power in rovers from Curiosity onwards.
The Mars helicopter ‘Ingenuity’, which we are nicknaming as ‘Genie’, has a multitude of other problems to answer. Unfortunately, using nuclear power would be too heavy for flying on Mars, so this craft uses solar.

Mars and Venus are our closest neighbors in the solar system. If Mars is in a particularly favorable position, it is only 55.6 million kilometers away from us on its elliptical orbit. Then we see it as bright red with the naked eye standing in the night sky. Astronomers observed strange processes on Mars as early as the 17th century. Due to the change in color and Earth-like surface structures, it was soon assumed that life existed on Mars.

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance mission captured thrilling footage of its rover landing in Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The real footage in this video was captured by several cameras that are part of the rover's entry, descent, and landing suite. The views include a camera looking down from the spacecraft's descent stage (a kind of rocket-powered jet pack that helps fly the rover to its landing site), a camera on the rover looking up at the descent stage, a camera on the top of the aeroshell (a capsule protecting the rover) looking up at that parachute, and a camera on the bottom of the rover looking down at the Martian surface.

The audio embedded in the video comes from the mission control call-outs during entry, descent, and landing.

  • 7 Minutes of Terror: How Perseverance Will Land on Mars

    10:46

The stakes are high for NASA's newest rover. Years of hard work and millions of dollars could be burnt into the Martian soil if one mistake has been made!

The Perseverance Rover represents the latest in a long line of remote robotic exploration vehicles sent to the red planet over the last 44 years.
It seeks to answer further questions raised by it’s predecessor Curiosity – which made its landing on Mars in 2012 and was the most ambitious mission flown by NASA at that time.
This ‘little engine that could’ has now been on Mars for almost 8 Earth years – 2835 Mars days to be exact. It has fulfilled it’s primary mission of finding evidence of organic molecules and geological change on Mars.
It continues to explore and search for water in the form of ice.
All this was possible due to Curiosity's successful landing. But how likely is Perseverance to have a successful touchdown?

  • New Mars DOCUMENTARY 2021 Puzzling Evidence Discovered on the Icy Continent of Antarctica

    33:12

It, seems the evidence for life on Mars is stacking up, and that evidence is often being found in strange and unusual places. Scientists were stunned when they discovered a puzzling Martian space rock on the icy continent of Antarctica, what make this rock unique is that scientist think it could contain the first credible evidence of life on Mars. That's not the only place they are looking, with exciting Mars missions being planned this year and in 2022, we could be in for a big surprise.

  • The First Real Images Of Mars - What Have We Discovered?

    10:43

The first real images of Mars. For several hundred years we have been looking at the red planet with great curiosity. The earth-like celestial body is the fourth in the solar system and the closest neighbour of the earth. The planet has a diameter that is only half as large as that of Earth. But its weight is only a tenth of that of the Earth. This is due to its low density and results in a relatively low attraction force. Despite its distance of at least 56 million kilometers, Mars seems to be within reach.

Stitched together from 116 images, this view captured by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover shows the path it will take in the summer of 2020 as it drives to the sulfate-bearing unit, the next layer it will be investigating on the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) Mount Sharp. Curiosity has to drive around a large sand patch in order to reach a place where it can ascend to the sulfate-rich region. The upper part of the mountain looms at the top image. The images were taken by the rover's Mast Camera, or Mastcam, on Jan. 10, 2020, the 2,641st Martian day, or sol, of the mission.

The panorama has been white-balanced so that the colors of the rock materials resemble how they would appear under daytime lighting conditions on Earth.

Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego built and operates Mastcam. A division of Caltech, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California built the Curiosity rover and manages the Mars Science Laboratory mission for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.
