  • A Trip from Canada to Norway: The wild North | Free Documentary Nature

    42:54

This foray through northern realms of our planet above the polar circle takes us to a part of our world especially affected by climate change. The often-cited adaptability of animals could also enable them to survive under new conditions. The camera team made this foray through the polar region, from Canada to Norway, to document that, which in the opinion of many nature researchers, will no longer be visible in 30 to 50 years' time.

Following the observation of ice bear mother with her young in Canada's Wapusk National Park at Hudson Bay, is a herd of harp seals on the ice during the breeding season. The Arctic Ocean ringed seals in Hudson Bay, on the other hand, prefer solitude. Should the offspring be born in an extremely cold night, they often freeze to death. Their bodies sink to the seabed at the beginning of spring when the pack ice thaws. Scavengers like the rare Greenland shark, who sees them as a welcome snack, quickly eats them. Underwater footage of this process also attempted by our camera team, very rarely succeeds.

  • Reconciliation Canoe

    6:11

When you take, you give. And if you just remember that in your dealings with Indigenous peoples, we can’t go wrong. Because they’re used to us coming and taking, and not giving. So I see this as an opportunity for the non-Indigenous community to give. When we visited Powell River, British Columbia, we were deeply touched and impressed by Hɛhɛwšɩn (the way forward) Reconciliation Canoe Journey Grandfather Project. This canoe carving project was developed in partnership with the residents of Powell River and the Tla’amin Nation, and aims to create a more meaningful understanding of reconciliation through community participation. We witnessed how actively community members have been in carving these two cedar canoes, and how the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities are coming together to work towards reconciliation. What an inspiring project. Take a look.

« Quand on prend, on donne. Quel projet inspirant. Apprenez-en plus ci-dessous.

  • Leg 3 Recap | Récapitulatif de létape 3

    4:24

It's hard to believe that Leg 3 has come and gone. This stretch from Baie-Comeau to Charlottetown was an incredible opportunity to celebrate Canada's environment and start conversations about how to preserve it. We visited some of the most remote places in the Mingan Archipelago, such as Anticosti Island, and were grateful for the opportunity to admire places that we might never have been able to see otherwise. Thanks to Leg 3 participants for their willingness to connect their personal experiences to the Canada C3 expedition, for their deep reflections at the end of each day, and for being such great ambassadors. Here are some of the most memorable moments of this leg.

    9:57

Beginning in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest and ending on luscious Vancouver Island, Leg 14 took us through the magnificent forests and mountains of British Columbia’s Pacific Coast — the traditional territory of, respectively, the Heiltsuk Nation, the Wuikinuxv Nation and the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw people. We saw the incredible natural wonders of this area: majestic grizzly bears, cascading waterfalls and soaring eagles, to name a few. We saw tremendous disrespect for this natural heritage at Namu, a cannery which was abandoned and left to waste into the Pacific Ocean. We also saw great hope for the future in the research conducted at the innovative Hakai Institute and through the work of the coastal First Nations who are fighting to preserve their land. We all learned so much from this leg and we are eager to take these lessons home with us. Experience the journey in our new Leg 14 Recap video.

    6:36

Join us in taking a look back at Leg 4, when we travelled from Charlottetown, P.E.I. to St. John's, Nfld. Like every leg, our participants came together on the first day with excitement and a little trepidation about what the next 10 days had in store for them. The experience of travelling along the East Coast, visiting vibrant communities and sharing stories with one another brought us all closer together very quickly. Dr. Marie Wilson, a commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Stephen Kakfwi, former premier of the Northwest Territories, led the group in thought-provoking discussions about what it means to be Canadian and what it means to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Many of us left St. John's transformed as people, ready to look forward to the next 150 years. Watch the journey here.

    50:22

Over the last ten years, the Arctic has gained international attention as a barometer for climate change and global warming. However, history has also shown that this region comes into sharpest focus in moments of global conflict and crisis; in this way, the Arctic can also be seen a gauge for geopolitical change.

In a Chats in the Stacks talk, Dr. Dawn Alexandrea Berry will discuss her new book Governing the North American Arctic: Sovereignty, Security, and Institutions (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) which brings together contributions from distinguished international academics, including the former Canadian National Defence minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and prominent Arctic leaders, along with official statements from diplomatic representatives of Canada, the United States, and Greenland. In addition, Dr. Berry will highlight Cornell’s historic role in early Arctic exploration and the security of the region, and then discuss the present-day challenges of governance in the Arctic.

Dr. Berry is a visiting scholar in the Department of History at Cornell University, and former postdoctoral fellow in foreign policy, security studies, and diplomatic history at the Einaudi Center for International Studies.

  • Time Lapse: The Arctic Highway from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, Canada

    20:21

November 11, 2019 - A huge item got checked off of the bucket list today - we drove to the Arctic Ocean!

Thanks to a new road built in 2017, Canada now has highways that connect all three of its oceanic coasts. Starting before sunrise in Inuvik, just inside the tree line, we take our truck to Tuk some 151 km away on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway (NWT Highway 10).

About two minutes north of Inuvik, Google Streetview cuts off, so until they send that little car of theirs up here again, this may very well be the best way to see the highway in the early winter - until you make the journey, yourself!

Note: As it's Remembrance Day, not much is open in Tuktoyaktuk - but getting there is half the fun! Falling into the freezing Arctic waters is the other half.

She may still only be in her 20's but it is hard to find anything that youth ambassador Makrina Morozowski hasn’t done! NOTE: The playthrough of Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut has stalled due to a consistent bug causing the game to crash whenever attempting to enter the town hall to further the story. I haven't had much time as of late to properly find a fix, but I will attempt to do so whenever possible. Hopefully I'll find a fix, or get lucky, and be able to continue the game.

Horror game playthroughs. I like horror games, but I'm much too scared to play them alone. Since I cannot usually find others to play these games with, I record them to pretend I'm playing for an audience.

    Current games being played:
    - Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut
    - F.E.A.R.
