Warships - Episode 1: World's Most Lawless Maritime Region: The Persian Gulf | Military Documentary

    Sinking a Destroyer:

Commodore Robert Davidson leads an international coalition of warships lt patrols 2.1 square million kilometers of water from his flagship, HMCS Iroquois. It's now in command of Combined Task Force 150, mandated to bring maritime security to one of the most lawless regions on the planet, The Persian Gulf and areas beyond.

Two thirds of the world's good pass through 3 key choke points in this theatre of operations, bounded by the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, the Gulf of Aden, and the northwest quadrant of the Indian Ocean. These waters are rife with terrorism, piracy, and the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and humans. It's more than a tough day at the office - it's a matter of life and death, each and every day during the deployment. Nearby in the waters south of Iran HMCS Calgary is ordered to conduct a boarding party: a dhow has been spotted, and while it could be carrying legal cargo, in this part of the world, it could also be carrying a far more sinister cargo. Further east, HMCS Protecteur 1s ordered to drop her supply and replenishment duties to investigate a dhow that is drifting aimlessly, in the waters south of Pakistan. Conducting a boarding party 1s a lot like a cop walking the beat, but with a lot more weaponry: you never know what's out there, until you get out there. And you never quite know exactly what to expect.

A powerful naval task group has sailed east from ports in Canada to one of the most lawless maritime regions in the world: the Persian Gulf. Now in command of Combined Task Force 150, the group’s mission is to lead an international coalition of warships in the fight against maritime terrorism and piracy, using whatever means necessary. WARSHIPS is a six-part HD documentary series that follows the daily events and real-life stories of the brave men and women living and working on these warships. You can’t get this close to war without actually enlisting.

Extreme Constructions: The Meraviglia Cruise Ship:

With the appearance of a “James Bond” ship, the Thunder Boat is the second largest ship of the Marine Nationale, after the Charles de Gaulle. The structure is fitted with revolutionary equipment, with a range of high technologies, and is able to operate in a range of situations, as it did in Saint Barthélemy in Cyclone Irma of September 2017.

This ship of the future is a true “Swiss knife”, acting simultaneously as an aircraft base, a commandment post and is equipped as a floating hospital, with the ability to shelter troops, helicopters and vehicles.

We discover it’s many capabilities for the first time through this documentary.

  • Gigantic Wind Park Relocation | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A wind park needs to get from Europe to Asia. Over two thousand tons of highly sensitive and valuable cargo. On one of the world’s largest heavy lift vessels.
The team has only 37 days for loading in two ports and travelling once around half of the globe. To be able to transport the entire cargo, the crew even has to build another level altogether – in the middle of the deck.

It’ll be an ongoing battle for five straight weeks. Against time. And against weather.

The load: Five gigantic nacelles, each as heavy as a Boeing 747 and nine 75-meter-long blades. All these wind park components have been specially designed to fit together – and can only be replaced with a huge effort. Any damage to the cladding or the electronics could delay construction of the whole wind park project by months.

The loading process is extremely complicate and has been developed especially for this transport! So no one has any experience with it. The crew has to trust the plans of the engineers. And they don’t have ANY margin of error. Just a couple centimeters too far to the left or right would mean: everything out again.
A project never before undertaken – anywhere in the world. And no one knows if the risky plan will prove successful in the end.
A mega transport in the superlative. Over two thousand two hundred tons of cargo on three levels. Below deck, on deck, and above deck.

  • Huge Drilling Rig Transport | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

An drilling rig is towed around the world by a single tug.

A brand-new drilling rig, worth 500 million dollar, has to go from South Korea to Europe. The problem: It is too gigantic for a heavy transport vessel. The solution: it’s being towed. By one single tug. It’s a true Mega Transport, halfway around the globe – all that in just 90 days.

The Mega Transport starts in Ulsan, South Korea. West Bollsta was built here for 6 years – and is now ready to get to its operation site. But how should this beast be delivered? It’s 123 meters long and 76 meters wide. Its maximum drilling depth: incredible 12 kilometers! Way to bulky to be transported in a common way. Surprisingly, a rather small kind of boat is best for the job: the ALP Striker – one of the strongest ocean tugs in the world.

The ALP Striker will pull the drilling rig across the oceans on arm-thick steel cables. They are so heavy that only the ship's own crane can move them. Connecting tug and rig alone takes a whole day.
Once the drilling rig is towed to the tug, they’re embarking on a journey never before seen: around the cape of good hope. Navigation, pirates, wind and waves – there are many unpredictable challenges along the way. Once they have managed them all, the destination is in sight: the Canary islands.

  • Gigantic Overseas Autoliner | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A transport to the other side of the globe. The “Höegh Trapper” is the largest automobile transporter in the world. Two hundred meters long, thirty-six meters wide. But the major attraction is actually behind the steel hull: A gigantic cargo area: In total over seventy-one thousand square meters. Enough room for eight-thousand-five-hundred cars. And hundreds of the so-called “High- and Heavies”: Gigantic machines of any kind.
Her journey takes the fully loaded “Trapper” on a journey covering
28,000 kilometers. The starting point: Antwerp in Belgium. Here, Port Captain Per Henningsen has to load 1,000 cars in record time – only 16 hours. Next stop: Bremerhaven, in Germany. Besides 2,000 cars here,
Per has to load 200 high and heavy units – one of which has him
worrying more than usual. He doesn’t know the exact measurements of the mysterious cargo – will it fit into the Trapper? From Bremerhaven, the journey continues to England, France, and Spain, and then out onto the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. From there across the pond to ports in the US and Jamaica, through the Panama Canal onto the Pacific and all the way to New Zealand and Australia…All that in just fifty days! The Panama Canal is the bottleneck of the journey. The canal is over a hundred years old and was designed for the largest ships at that time. Maximum width: 32.3 meters. For behemoths like The Trapper, that’s not enough. Canal authorities began construction on newer, larger lock systems in 2007. Since its opening in 2016, ships belonging to the so-called Neopanamax class can now transit the canal and that includes the Trapper. But even though the new lock chambers are fifty-five meters wide: For the Trapper this means not even ten meters clearance on either side - a special challenge for Captain She and his crew…

Most Dangerous Ways To School | MEXICO | Free Documentary

Every Monday, little Lorenzo struggles alone as he makes his way over slippery scree and past steep canyons. And all this just so he can go to school and receive something to eat there. The 6-year-old lives in northwest Mexico in the extensive Sierra Madre Occidental. This is the home of his people, the Rarámuri. These indigenous peoples live well-hidden in the mountains and have hardly any contact with the outside world. Their daily lives revolve around agriculture and livestock; poverty is a big issue for the Rarámuri. To escape this fate, Lorenzo must literally overcome more than 1000 metres altitude. One small lapse of concentration, one careless step and Lorenzo could fall off the edge.

At school, Teresa, Angela and Philomena sit next to him. These sisters, aged 6, 8 and 9, can see the school from their home, which sits on a plateau opposite. But to get there requires a journey of many hours, which takes them over narrow and rocky paths, onto sharp rock edges, across a stream, and - just before they reach their destination - forces them to climb again steeply uphill over smooth rocks on all fours. If it is raining, this journey becomes an almost impossible one: the stream is transformed within minutes into a torrent, and the rocks are suddenly as slippery as an ice rink.

These children undertake their journey to school all by themselves. For up to four hours, they march through one of the most beautiful but also one of the most dangerous Mexican landscapes. Throughout this journey they all have only one goal in mind: to ultimately find a job in a city and lead a better life.

    13:11

The USS Fitzgerald is now in Yokosuka’s dry dock 4, where officials will conduct a full assessment and decide the next step for the damaged destroyer.

Seven sailors were killed in a June 17 collision between the Fitzgerald and a Philippine-flagged cargo ship, about 64 miles southwest of the naval base.

Officials will “conduct assessments that will inform options for long term repairs,” a Navy statement said Monday. They are trying to determine if the Fitzgerald is able to travel to the states under its own power or will need to be towed there for repairs.

  • SHOCKED: US Navy’s Next LARGE Surface Combatant

    4:41

What will the U.S. Navy’s next large surface combatant look like?

The USN has cycled through a wide variety of plans for its next generation large surface combatant, including both cruiser and destroyer projects. Thus far, three decades of thinking about replacing the Ticonderogas and the DDG-51 classes have resulted in the Zumwalts, a three ship class widely regarded as expensive curiosities, and a third flight of Arleigh Burke destroyers. According to David Larter, the Navy is now looking at entirely new hull that would represent a step beyond the DDG-51 in terms of size and capability. It is quite likely that the new ships will be equipped to carry and launch hypersonic weapons from construction.

The Navy’s future cruiser project also remains up in the air, but the ships will also require a larger hull. It is not inconceivable that the Navy could use the same hull for both the future cruisers and destroyers, with different constellations of systems to fulfill the missions specific to each type. The Ticonderoga class cruisers, after all, were based on the hull of the Spruance class destroyers. Larter’s reporting suggests that the Navy is focusing on a hull that can accommodate a set of already-developed technologies better than the existing DDG-51, which does not allow much room for growth. New technologies could then be incorporated into destroyers and cruisers as they develop into maturity.

In a sense, then, the Navy is trying to recapture the magic of the DDG-51. The Arleigh Burke project has been fabulously successful, generating scores of robust hulls with plenty of room for improvement and modification. A follow-on project that builds upon the success of that class would be welcome after the misfires of the DDG-1000 and LCS programs, as well as the ongoing difficulties of the CVN-78 carriers.

What will the U.S. Navy’s next large surface combatant look like?

► A United States Naval Vessel was impacted by inclement weather in the North Atlantic, damaging the interior of the ship and the equipment inside. The equipment that needed to be removed from the vessel had never been lifted by the Navy before. The ship could not undergo maintenance until the damaged equipment was removed.

    ►Our Solution:
►Bari, utilized her knowledge of and relationships with the three different commands on the Naval base to look at all of the equipment that was already located on base, and determine what could be used in a safe and compliant manner to get the equipment off of the damaged ship so it could return for repair.

  • Chances of conflict rising as Australian ships confronted by Chinese forces.

    2:26

Chances of conflict rising' as Australian ships 'confronted' by Chinese forces.
Australian navy ships have been confronted by Chinese forces while conducting an exercise near the contested South China Sea.

The incident, reported by the ABC, took place after five Australian naval ships joined US and Japanese forces in a joint exercise in the Philippine Sea.

The details around what’s been described as an unintentional interaction are scant but it comes as tensions between China and Western nations continue to rise, with the US Defence Secretary Mark Esper declaring America will step up its challenges to Beijing's territorial claims in the region, calling them unlawful.
The encounter with Chinese authorities took place some time last week after Australian war ships joined USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, which includes the US Navy’s guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam and guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Akizuki-class destroyer JS Teruzuki.

  • INS Viraat Heading to Alang Beach Yard for Breaking

    3:08

Indian Navy’s decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat will begin its last journey on Friday from Mumbai to reach Alang in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar where it will be dismantled. Alang based Shree Ram Group had won the bid for breaking down the historic ship for INR 38.54 crore. The ship is currently anchored at the naval dockyard in Mumbai from where a tug boat will tow the ship to Alang. The Indian Navy ship, decommissioned after 30 years of service in 2017, is expected to reach Alang around Sunday midnight. This is the only warship to have served both the UK and India Navy.

INS Viraat was originally a British ship and was commissioned in the Royal Navy in 1959. HMS Hermes was a conventional British aircraft carrier and the last of the Centaur class. The ship was laid down by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness during World War II as HMS Elephant. Construction was suspended in 1945 but work was resumed in 1952 to clear the slipway and the hull was launched on 16 February 1953. The vessel remained unfinished until 1957, when she entered service on 18 November 1959 as HMS Hermes after extensive modifications which included installation of a massive Type 984 'searchlight' 3D radar, a fully angled deck with a deck-edge elevator, and steam catapults. With these changes she more resembled the reconstructed aircraft carrier Victorious than the other three ships in the class. Hermes initially operated Supermarine Scimitar, de Havilland Sea Vixen, and Fairey Gannet fixed-wing aircraft, together with Westland Whirlwind helicopters. The construction cost of Hermes was GBP 18 million with a further GBP 1 million for electronic equipment and a further GBP 10 million for aircraft in 1959. Hermes was in service with the Royal Navy from 1959 until 1984, and she served as the flagship of the British forces during the 1982 Falklands War.

After being sold to India in 1986, the vessel was recommissioned and remained in service with the Indian Navy as INS Viraat until 2017. INS Viraat was the flagship of the Indian Navy before INS Vikramaditya was commissioned in 2013. On 23 July 2016, Viraat sailed for the last time under her own power from Mumbai to Kochi, where she was dry-docked and prepared for decommissioning. She was towed out of Kochi on 23 October, returning to Mumbai on 28 October, where she was laid up. Viraat was formally decommissioned on 6 March 2017. After the failure of plans to convert her into a hotel and museum, she was sold for scrap and scheduled to be broken up beginning in September 2020.
