    2:30:31

Billionaire U.S. businessman Jeff Bezos's company Blue Origin is set for its second suborbital tourism flight today, with Canadian actor William Shatner - who embodied the promise of space travel on the Star Trek TV series and films - among the four-person all-civilian crew poised to blast off in Texas.

Shatner, at age 90, is due to become the oldest person ever in space, beating pioneering female pilot, Wally Funk, 82, who also flew with Bezos in July. Shatner will experience a few minutes of weightlessness 60 miles (100 kilometres) from Earth, before returning in the reusable rocket.

He and his crewmates are scheduled for a 9 a.m. (1000 EDT/1530 GMT) takeoff aboard the 60-foot-tall (18.3 meters-tall) fully autonomous New Shepard spacecraft at Blue Origin's launch site about 20 miles (32 km) outside the rural west Texas town of Van Horn.

Joining Shatner for what is expected to be a roughly 10-minute journey are former NASA engineer Chris Boshuizen, clinical research entrepreneur Glen de Vries and Blue Origin vice president and engineer Audrey Powers.

  • William Shatner blasts off into space aboard Jeff Bezos Blue Origin | FULL

    2:10:16

Star Trek’s Captain Kirk blasted off into space Wednesday morning aboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin spacecraft — boldly going where no other sci-fi actors have gone.

Jeff Bezos‘ space travel company, Blue Origin, carried Canadian actor William Shatner, who at the age of 90, became the oldest person in space. He was joined by three others — two of them paying customers — aboard a Blue Origin capsule. It was the company’s second launch with a crew.

Bezos was on the debut flight in July, along with his brother and the youngest and oldest people to ever fly in space. Shatner will break that upper threshold by six years.

“I’ve heard about space for a long time now. I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle,” Shatner said in a statement.

Also flying with Shatner: a former NASA engineer who founded a nanosatellite company; the co-founder of a software company specializing in clinical research; and a Blue Origin employee.

The up-and-down space hop will last 10 minutes and reach no higher than about 66 miles (106 kilometers).

  • In Full: Star Trek’s William Shatner blasts into space on Blue Origin rocket

    2:50:29

CAPTAIN Kirk is poised to boldly go where no Starfleet captain has gone before – at least in real life.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series, will fly to the edge of space on Wednesday on Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket.

The 90-year-old will become the world's oldest astronaut when he lifts off with three other crew members from West Texas for a ten-minute flight.

The trip aboard a willy-shaped rocket called New Shepard is scheduled for 2:30pm UK time (9:30am EST). You can watch it live on YouTube, here.

The spacecraft was built by Blue Origin — the space company founded by Star Trek fan Bezos, the world’s richest man.

The Amazon founder, 57, was launched into space on it in July — but the trip was ridiculed as his vessel resembled a giant penis.

Shatner, who famously said “to boldly go where no man has gone before” at the start of each episode, revealed last week: I’ve heard about space for a long time now.

I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle.

  • BLUE ORIGIN: Amazon-Gründer Bezos schickt Captain Kirk William Shatner ins All | WELT Live dabei

    2:52:59
