  • Suez Canal blockage: A lasting impact on global trade? | DW News

    5:38

After efforts stretching over many days, the Ever Given container ship in the Suez Canal has finally been refloated.
That doesn't mean, though, that traffic in the waterway is back to normal. But it's certainly good news that the gigantic vessel could be dislodged without completely removing the cargo first. After all, it was proving to be a very costly affair. Insurance company Allianz estimated that each day of the blockade was costing between $6-10 billion (€5-8.5 billion).
That's hardly surprising, given that 13% of goods making up the global trade volume pass through the 193-kilometer (120-mile) Suez Canal. It's the shortest route between the economies of Asia and Europe — and it can be a real chokepoint as the past few days have shown all too clearly. Similar bottlenecks are found in the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia. It would only take, say, a sandstorm, or maybe an inattentive captain to clog a key artery of world trade.

    -----------------------
A giant container ship named the Ever Given left the port of Ningbo, China, which is just south of Shanghai. The Ever Given flies under the flag of Panama, but it’s owned by the Evergreen Marine Corporation, a huge taiwanese container transportation and shipping company.

The Ever Given would go down the Asian continent. From there, it would start its 10 day journey out at sea all the way to the Gulf of Aden at the horn of Africa, up the Red Sea, all the way to the Suez Port at the south end of the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal is the connecting link between two giant economies: Europe and Asia, that allows ships to not have to sail all the way around Africa, which can add two weeks to the trip.

But in the span of 7 minutes, one of the most important trade routes is shut down, 12% of global trade grinds to a halt, at the cost of $400 million dollars every. Hour.

Initially, they estimated that it would take around a week to get the ship out, but that estimation quickly grew to a few weeks. So the natural question is -what made the ship crash? At first, the crash was blamed on the bad weather. People also started to say that there was a power outage on the ship. The balance of the world can flip within minutes.

Shipping used to be very complicated and expensive. But by the 1970’s - the 20 foot shipping container became the standard. And from that point on, the world economy was forever changed. Or in other words, shipping containers have become part of the lifeblood of the modern economy.

Since the Suez Canal mainly connects Europe and Asia, initially, there were a lot of fears that it would disrupt the global economy and supply chain. But what you should worry about is just how fragile our delicate world really is.

Since the start of the industrial revolution, everything in society has only gotten more concentrated, more centralized. Which leads us to today, where we’ve optimized everything to be the lowest cost possible, but at the expense of any robustness in our global economy.

The world as it stands is very fragile - and when you look at it through this lens, isn’t it just amazing that we’ve somehow not only survived, but thrived this long? Without blowing ourselves up? It's incredible.

The ship blocking the Suez Canal has been fully dislodged, a Suez Canal Authority spokesperson told CNN. The Ever Given, a 224,000-ton vessel almost as long as the Empire State Building is tall, ran aground in the Egyptian canal on March 23. Crews from Egypt and around the world have been working nonstop to try to refloat the ship, with the operation involving 10 tug boats, sand dredges and salvage companies.

  • Giant cargo ship stuck in Egypts Suez Canal could take weeks to free

    2:41

A giant cargo ship has been stuck in Egypt's Suez Canal for the past three days. It's blocking one of the world's busiest trade routes. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

The behemoth cargo ship stuck in the Suez Canal and blocking traffic in one of the world’s most important maritime trade chokepoints isn’t set to break free just yet.

The Ever Given, a 220,000-ton mega ship nearly a quarter-mile long with a 20,000 container capacity, ran aground after being blown by strong winds while entering Egypt’s Suez Canal from the Red Sea. It’s completely blocked the passageway that is home to as much as 12% of the world’s seaborne trade and through which 50 container ships normally transit per day.

Tugboats and dredgers are currently working to dislodge the ship, which has been stuck since Tuesday evening. But the operation could take weeks, one of the executives involved has warned.

“While we believe and hope the situation will get resolved shortly, there are some risks of the ship breaking,” JPMorgan strategist Marko Kolanovic wrote in a note Thursday. “In this scenario, the canal would be blocked for an extended period of time, which could result in significant disruptions to global trade, skyrocketing shipping rates, further increase of energy commodities, and an uptick in global inflation.”

The crisis is another blow to the global supply chain after a brutal year ridden with delays, shortages and price squeezes on the back of the coronavirus pandemic.

What does this mean for global trade?

The shipping delays could impact everything from the clothes and shoes you ordered online to gym equipment, electronics, food, and energy supplies — meaning gas prices could get higher, too.

“Suez Canal container blockage to further rattle global supply chains, to drive pricing higher given pent-up demand,” analysts at JPMorgan said in a research note Thursday.

The man-made Suez, at 120 miles long, is a key transit point connecting East to West. And the 20,000 ships that pass through it yearly transport everything from oil and gas to machine parts and consumer goods.

While it’s still early to say what the full impact of the tanker crisis will be, the bank expects that in the near term, “the blockage is likely to add to industry supply strains, which are already hampered by ongoing supply chain bottlenecks″ in the form of port congestion and shortages of both vessels and containers due to Covid-19.

Ships are going to have to shift to entirely different routes, “will result in longer voyage times and causing further delays,” JPMorgan wrote.

And those delays could be more than 15 days for many ships, whose alternative is sailing around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, which analysts say would increase shipping times by up to 30%.

  • Massive cargo ship still stuck in Egypts Suez Canal could take weeks to clear

    3:04

The massive container ship that ran aground in the Suez Canal, halting traffic in one of the world's busiest waterways, is still stuck. The ship, called the Ever Given, became horizontally wedged in the waterway following heavy winds. Nearly 19,000 ships passed through the canal during 2020, for an average of 51.5 per day, according to the Suez Canal Authority. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

The massive container ship Ever Given has now been stuck in the Suez Canal for three days, halting billions of dollars in trade as vessels pile up on either side of the waterway.

More than 150 ships are currently waiting to pass through the 120 mile man-made canal, according to estimates from research firm StoneX.

Images captured from vessel tracker MarineTraffic show the extent of the buildup.

The canal handles around 12% of seaborne trade, making it an essential point of passage. Each additional day that the ship is delayed disrupts more than $9 billion worth of goods, according to the Associated Press citing estimates from Lloyd’s List.

Research firm StoneX noted that 24 of the vessels are carrying crude, 15 are refined product tankers, and 16 are liquified natural gas/liquified petroleum gas product carriers.

For ships waiting to cross the canal, alternate options are limited.

“As delays continue, shippers will have to broach the unpalatable decision of whether to make a U-turn and head for the Cape of Good Hope or wait it out in the Red Sea and Mediterranean,” commodity data company Kpler wrote in a note to clients.

Re-routing significantly increases a trip’s length, which translates to higher costs. Sailing from the Suez Canal to Amsterdam takes just over 13 days when traveling at 12 knots, compared to 41 days if traveling around the Cape of Good Hope.

“The event highlights the relative fragility of the on-water trading system, particularly for those flows for which Suez Canal transits make up a higher percentage of total volumes moved,” the firm added.

The ship became horizontally wedged in the waterway following heavy winds. Multiple tugboats were sent to the scene, and a team from Smit Salvage has been called in to assist with the operation.

“Dredging operations to assist refloating the vessel continue. In addition to the dredgers already on site a specialised suction dredger has arrived at the location,” Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, which is the technical manager of the vessel, said in a statement. The firm said an early attempt to re-float the vessel on Thursday was unsuccessful, and that another attempt would be made later in the day.

The enormous cargo carrier is more than 1,300 feet long and about 193 feet wide. It weighs more than 200,000 tons. One end of the ship was wedged into one side of the canal, with the other stretching nearly to the other bank.

Nearly 19,000 ships passed through the canal during 2020, for an average of 51.5 per day, according to the Suez Canal Authority. The ship was sailing from China to Rotterdam when it ran aground.

  • Tugs, dredgers continue work to refloat ship blocking Suez Canal

    5:31

Suez Canal salvage teams were alternating between dredging and tugging on Sunday to dislodge a massive container ship blocking the busy waterway, but two sources said efforts had been complicated by rock under the ship’s bow.
Dredgers working to dislodge the stranded vessel have so far shifted 27,000 cubic metres (954,000 cubic feet) of sand, to a depth of 18 metres (59 feet), and efforts would continue around the clock, wind conditions and tides permitting, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said in a statement.
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered preparations for the possible removal of some of the ship’s cargo to help refloat it, SCA Chairman Osama Rabie told Egypt’s Extra News.
Any operation to lighten the ship’s load would not start before Monday, an SCA source said.
    Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reports.

  • Cargo ship blocking Suez Canal costs billions in delays of goods

    3:35

The stranded mega-container vessel, Ever Given in the Suez Canal, is holding up an estimated $400 million an hour in trade, based on the approximate value of goods that are moved through the Suez every day, according to shipping data and news company Lloyd's List. It could take days, even weeks, to re-float the cargo ship. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

The stranded mega-container vessel, Ever Given in the Suez Canal, is holding up an estimated $400 million an hour in trade, based on the approximate value of goods that are moved through the Suez every day, according to shipping data and news company Lloyd’s List.

Lloyd’s values the canal’s westbound traffic at roughly $5.1 billion a day, and eastbound traffic at around $4.5 billion a day. The blockage is further stressing an already strained supply chain, said Jon Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy for the National Retail Federation.

“Every day that the vessel remains wedged across the canal adds delays to normal cargo flows,” he said, adding that the trade group’s members are actively working with carriers to monitor the situation and determine the best mitigation strategies. “Many companies continue to struggle with supply chain congestion and delays stemming from the pandemic. There is no doubt the delays will ripple through the supply chain and cause additional challenges.”

The Suez Canal, which separates Africa from Asia, is one of the busiest trade routes in the world, with approximately 12% of total global trade moving through it. Energy exports like liquified natural gas, Crude oil, and refined oil make up 5% to 10% of global shipments. The rest of the traffic is largely consumer products ranging from fire pits to clothing, furniture, manufacturing, auto parts and exercise equipment.

“The key to this problem hinges on how much longer it will take to move the Ever Given,” explained Alan Baer, President of logistics provider, OL USA LLC. “USA importers face arrival delays of three days right now and this will continue to grow as long as the disruption continues.”

    4:14

Peter Sand, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO, joins Worldwide Exchange to discuss the supply chain impact of the shutdown of the Suez Canal, after a container ship blocked traffic. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

The massive container ship that ran aground in the Suez Canal, halting traffic in one of the world’s busiest waterways, is still stuck as tug boats continued to try to dislodge the ship on Thursday. A team of expert salvors from Smit Salvage have been called in to assist with the operation.

The ship, called the Ever Given, became horizontally wedged in the waterway following heavy winds. Multiple tugboats were sent to the scene to assist in the re-float operation, which could take days or even longer.

“We can’t exclude it might take weeks, depending on the situation,” said Peter Berdowski, CEO of Dutch company Boskalis. Berdowski, whose company is helping in the salvage efforts, made the comments on Dutch television, according to Reuters.

At 8:30 a.m. ET Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, which is the technical manager of the vessel, said an earlier attempt to re-float the vessel had failed, and that another re-float attempt would be made later on Thursday.

“Dredging operations to assist refloating the vessel continue. In addition to the dredgers already on site a specialised suction dredger has arrived at the location,” the firm said.

The enormous cargo carrier is more than 1,300 feet long and about 193 feet wide. It weighs more than 200,000 tons. One end of the ship was wedged into one side of the canal, with the other stretching nearly to the other bank.

The 120-mile long man-made waterway is a key point of global trade, connecting a steady flow of goods from East to West.

“Dredgers are working to clear sand and mud from around the vessel to free her. Tugboats in conjunction with Ever Given’s winches are working to shift the vessel,” Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement said Wednesday evening.

Bernhard Schulte said that there were no reports of injuries among the 25 crew members, and that no cargo has been damaged. Initial investigations have ruled out mechanical or engine failure as reason for the grounding.

Everything from consumer products to machinery parts to oil flows through its waters.

Nearly 19,000 ships passed through the canal during 2020, for an average of 51.5 per day, according to the Suez Canal Authority. The ship was sailing from China to Rotterdam when it ran aground.

Satellite images showed a buildup of ships on either end of the waterway as the Ever Given halted the flow of traffic.

The accident comes as the global supply chain already struggles to keep apace with demand. The shortages have been most acute in the chip industry, forcing automakers to suspend operations.

    Mandatory Credit: Suez Canal Authority

Salvage teams continued their work attempting to refloat the stuck MV Ever Given container ship blocking the Suez Canal on Sunday.

The Ever Given, a Panama-flagged ship measuring 400 metres (1312 ft) long and 59 metres (193 ft) wide ran aground on Tuesday after reportedly being knocked off course due to strong winds while heading towards the port of Rotterdam from China.

The salvage teams believed that higher-than-usual spring tides on Sunday evening might be able to help them move the vessel from the channel.

Local reports suggest that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ordered the Suez Canal Authority to begin planning to move some of the more than 18,000 containers from the ship if their refloating efforts continue to fail. This would lighten the load and make future attempts easier.

The Suez Canal is one of the world's busiest trading routes with nearly 30 percent of global container ship traffic passing through it daily. The disruption of ship traffic has resulted in long queues consisting of more than 300 ships that were set to cross the 193 km (120 miles) long waterway, causing severe delays in delivering oil and other products.

  • Suez Canal Blocked by Stuck Container Ship

    1:55

Mar.24 -- Bloomberg's Paul Wallace discusses a stuck container ship blocking maritime traffic in the Suez Canal. He speaks with Annemarie Hordern on Bloomberg Daybreak: Europe.

  • This is how youre supposed to navigate the Suez Canal | Ship Time-lapse

    5:09

This is how you're supposed to navigate Egypt's Suez Canal.

One boater's timelapse shows how a vessel should travel through the artificial waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

YouTuber RoamerRealm recorded a timelapse on January 5 of a boat as it makes its way through the canal to Port Said.
