  • Dinosaurs Looked Nothing Like in Movies and 30 Myths We Believe

    9:19

There're so many facts in the world we assume to be common knowledge without even checking. However, they often turn out to be misconceptions. Bright Side has recalled and destroyed 30 myths about the world. One of them: dinosaurs actually looked nothing like they're portrayed in the movies, but rather like... turkeys. Watch this video to learn about how some of the most well-known “facts” are false.

  • Heres What Velociraptors Really Looked Like

    4:44

If your main source of dinosaur facts is Jurassic Park, you might have some misconceptions about what the creatures really looked like. It’s a science fiction film after all, as hopefully no amusement park mogul will be attempting to create a dino park any time soon, but even the appearances of some of the dinosaurs were inaccurate.

You still wouldn’t want to meet a velociraptor in real life, but don’t worry, they’re nowhere near as terrifying as they were in Steven Spielberg’s film. It’s time to separate the fact from the fiction and take a look at what velociraptors really looked like.

  • 5 Dinosaur Photos that Reveal What They Looked Like in Real Life

    9:53

It took experts at the Royal Tyrrell Museum almost five years and thousands of painstaking hours to expose this dinosaur’s skin and bones. From nose to hips, the fossil reveals the scaly armor of the 3,000-pound herbivore as it looked when alive. Discovered in 2011 during an excavation at a Canadian mine, it is the best-preserved fossil of a dinosaur ever found...

Royal Tyrrell Museum curator Donald Henderson calls this fossil the (QUOTE) “Rosetta stone for armor.” The best-preserved fossil of a nodosaur ever found was dug out from a mine in Alberta.

Around 110 to 112 million years ago, the biting coldness of central Canada is believed to have resembled today’s South Florida. The specimen would have lived in a warm and humid climate among conifer forests and meadows.

In the early Cretaceous, the land known today as Alberta was blanketed by rising waters that carved an inland seaway. It’s likely that a flooded river carried the dinosaur away, sinking it back-first into the seabed. Its quick underwater burial and the millions of years of accumulated layers preserved the fossil incredibly well.

In 2011, Shawn Funk, a heavy-equipment operator, was working on the excavation when his bucket clipped something rough and oddly-colored lumps came to sight. The 15,000-pound rock was then carried 420 miles to the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s prep lab.

Half the fossil remained intact, revealing the mammal’s scaly armor as it looked back then. A mosaic of armor tiles coated its neck and back, while gray circles outlined individual scales.

Moreover, after working on it for many years by a team led by fossil preparator Mark Mitchel, its well-preserved skin and bones were slowly exposed. Mitchel said: (QUOTE) “You almost have to fight for every millimeter.”

Behind its hollow eyes, the nodosaur had 20-inch spikes on its shoulders, used as a defense against attacks. The grumpy herbivore, 18-foot long and weighing 3,000 pounds, was the rhinoceros of its day.

The statue-like fossil looks so life-like that museum researcher Caleb Brown announced: (QUOTE) “We don’t just have a skeleton, we have a dinosaur as it would have been.”

  • Reconstructed Sounds of Dinosaurs

    2:08

An attempt at plausible reconstructions of what dinosaurs may sound like. They did not have larynxes or syrinxes, so they mainly made deep bass sounds inaudible to humans, but some had some unique features, as displayed here. The T-Rex here serves as a general demonstration of how most saurians would have sounded like, though perhaps a lighter and higher-pitched rumble for some.

40+ Photos of How an Artist Depicts What Dinosaurs Actually Looked Like

When it comes to creatures that are known to us only through fossils it's understandable that there's a lot we don’t know. Skin, fur, hair, feathers, fat tissue rarely gets fossilised and fossil remains can't tell much about the behavior of the animal. Hence, it's no secret that when it comes to palaeontology, a fair amount of speculation is allowed.

C.M. Kosemen, an Istanbul-based artist has written a book All Yesterdays about prehistoric animals where he shared some of his speculations through illustrations.
He says that animal reconstructions based only on fossils may often pose some inaccuracies. The main reason is that many features of animal bodies may not have survived in fossils, such as pouches, or skin flaps.

Most of us have seen dinosaurs portrayed with deadly grins and massive sharp teeth making them look like terrifying predators. According to Kosemen, actual dinosaurs which inhabited the earth million years ago, may not have looked so terrifying after all. Most of the animals had lips, gums and enough facial fat to hide their vicious grins.
To avoid similar misconceptions himself, the artist tries to take more cues from animals today.

Kurzgesagt (/ˌkʊərtsɡəˈzɑːkt/; German for In a nutshell) is a German animation and design studio founded by Philipp Dettmer. The studio's YouTube channel focuses on minimalist animated educational content, using the flat design style. It discusses scientific, technological, political, philosophical and psychological subjects.[4] Narrated by Steve Taylor, videos on the channel are typically 4–16 minutes in length, with many of them available in German through the channel Dinge Erklärt – Kurzgesagt.

Aside from their German channel, they began creating videos for their Spanish channel En Pocas Palabras – Kurzgesagt near the end of 2019.[5] While their English channel mostly finances itself with donations from their viewers and individual sponsorships, the German channel is financially supported by Funk, the online presence of German public broadcasting, and the Spanish channel is sponsored by Wix,[5] in addition to a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

With over 16 million subscribers and over 100 videos, the studio's English channel was ranked as the world's 395th most subscribed as of August 4, 2021.[6]

  • Heres What A Baby T-Rex Really Looked Like

    2:37

HERE'S WHAT A BABY T-REX REALLY LOOKED LIKE

When you hear the name Tyrannosaurus Rex, your mind probably draws up the portrait of a giant, sharp-toothed dinosaur, easily one of the most fearsome beasts to ever stalk the Earth. Now, there's no arguing that point. T-Rex was one huge mofo, with jaws so powerful — 7,800 pounds of force, to be precise — that the bones of their victims literally exploded between their teeth. That's one superpowered creature. Now, you can make fun of the creature's tiny arms all you want, or quote outdated theories about them merely being scavengers, but the truth is, if one of these dinos appeared in your backyard, you'd be running to the basement, real quick.

That said, even the grizzliest, angriest dude you know used to be an adorable little toddler, and the Tyrannosaurus was no exception. In fact, a 2019 exhibit shown at the American Museum of Natural History (or AMNH), in New York City, proves that a junior T-Rex might've been the cutest little cotton ball to ever make cooing noises.

The turkey-sized dinosaur likely sported a bandit-like mask of dark feathers around its eyes, with a striped tail to match. It likely had a dark-colored back and a light underside. This is called countershading. Countershading is a type of camouflage that makes animals appear less dimensional from the side. With these findings, it can be deduced that the Sinosauropteryx actually lived in an open habitat rather than under tree coverage, as it was previously believed.

  • The feathered world of what dinosaurs really looked like + Israel’s post-election foreign policy

    39:43

In this episode, how new discoveries continue to change our understanding of what dinosaurs looked like – and are helping to shed light on bigger questions about evolution. And after Israel’s fourth election in two years ended in another political stalemate, a foreign policy expert explains what this could mean for the Middle East.

Welcome to episode 11 of The Conversation Weekly, the world explained by experts. Ever since palaeontologists started classifying fossils and bones as dinosaurs in the early 19th century, artists have been using them to try and imagine what dinosaurs looked like. But, however much Hollywood may have instilled a certain vision of dinosaurs into our minds in recent decades, we’re still a long way off having all the answers about what dinosaurs actually looked like.

We speak to two palaeontologists about what new evidence is emerging and how our dinosaur imaginings have changed. Maria McNamara, professor of paleobiology at University College Cork in Ireland, explains about the, at times controversial, history of feathered dinosaurs – and what new information is starting to emerge about dinosaur colour. And Nicolas Campione, senior lecturer in paleobiology at the University of New England in Australia, tells us the two main techniques palaeontologists have used for estimating the size of dinosaurs.

In our second story, we head to Israel, where coalition negotiations are continuing following elections on March 23. Whatever happens next will have ramifications for Israel’s foreign policy, which is closely tied with domestic politics. Amnon Aran, senior lecturer in international politics of the Middle East, at City, University of London, talks us through how history could inform what happens next, and what the foreign policy stakes are for whoever takes the reins of the next Israeli government.

And Eva Catalán, associate editor at The Conversation in Spain, gives us her recommended reads. The Conversation Weekly is produced by Mend Mariwany and Gemma Ware, with sound design by Eloise Stevens. Our theme music is by Neeta Sarl.If you'd like to sign up for The Conversation's free daily newsletter, please subscribe here. Take a step back in time to when dinosaurs wandered the Earth with the all new LEGO® Ideas Dinosaur Fossils set, available directly from LEGO stores and online from 1st November. Dinosaur and LEGO brick fans alike can get their hands on this highly detailed set of brick-built fossils to proudly display on their desk or at home.

This set is a must have for anyone with a passion for dinosaurs and all things prehistoric. The set contains three buildable dinosaur skeletons of the infamous T-rex, Triceratops and a Pteranodon with display stands to create a LEGO style natural history exhibit.

The LEGO Ideas Dinosaur Fossils set contains 910 pieces, creating three detailed dinosaur skeletons that are perfect to learn more about these magnificent creatures. Each of the models are posable, allowing builders to recreate ferocious poses on their desks.

The set comes complete with interesting facts about each of the dinosaurs on display and information about the sets LEGO fan designer. The set’s LEGO Ideas fan designer is Jonathan Brunn; a graphic and web designer, working in a creative agency in Perpignan, France. He is also a massive science and dinosaur geek, into space, searching for fossils and everything related… and of course, he’s a big LEGO fan.

Jonathan tells “When I was little, my passion for dinosaurs was almost obsessional. Dinosaurs were the most incredible thing ever for me, so I made this project to please my inner child! I would have loved it as a kid, and I think every kid who loves dinosaurs and science would agree with me”.

The models are built to 1:32 scale and each come with their own individual stands and a sapiens skeleton figure to truly showcase the fascinating scale of these prehistoric animals. The T-rex model is the largest of the three measuring over 7” (20cm) tall and 15” (40cm) long making this set significantly easier to display and store than a real 12-metre-long T-rex!

LEGO Ideas is a platform that allows fans to submit their own LEGO brick creations to be voted on by other fans. If a set reaches 10,000 votes then it will be reviewed by the LEGO Group and maybe even brought to life.

This detail packed LEGO Ideas model will be ready to discover in LEGO Stores and online at LEGO.com from1st November. Act quickly before the set goes extinct!
