The observable universe is a big place that has been around for more than 13 billion years. Up to two trillion galaxies made up of something like 20,000 billion billion stars surround our home galaxy. In the milky way alone scientists assume there are some 40 billion earth like planets in the habitable zone of their stars. When we look at these numbers it is hard to imagine that there is nobody else out there.

Is this how aliens would rule the universe?

The word aliens might feel very unscientific but the idea that we aren't alone in this universe is a well believed theory within the scientific world. With 6 billion Earth-like planets within the milky way is it so hard to believe there could be extra-terrestrial life out there. Dr Josie Peters explains some more.

  • How Advanced Would Aliens Need to Be to Contact Earth?

The Universe is incredibly big and seems full of potential for life, with billions of habitable planets. If an advanced civilization had the technology to travel between the stars, at just 0.1% of the speed of light, It could colonize our galaxy in roughly 100 million years. Which is not that long given the billions of years the milky way has existed – so in principle any spacefaring civilization should be able to spread rapidly over huge sectors of the galaxy. And yet we see nothing, hear nothing, the universe seems empty. Devoid of others. This is the Fermi Paradox, which we have discussed in more detail in other videos.

Confronted with the seemingly empty universe, humanity faces a dilemma. We desperately want to know if we are alone in the Milky Way. We want to call out and reveal ourselves to anyone watching but that could be the last thing we ever do. Because maybe the universe is not empty. Maybe it’s full of civilizations but they are hiding from each other. Maybe the civilizations that attracted attention in the past were wiped away by invisible arrows. This is the Dark Forest solution to the Fermi paradox.

  • LIFE BEYOND 3: In Search of Giants. The Hunt for Intelligent Alien Life

    42:40

Patreon: Soundtrack: | Who are the masters of the universe? Are we the only intelligent life, or is something else lurking out there?

For 60 years now, we have probed the skies for signs of alien intelligence, longing for connection -- to no avail. But new ideas and technologies are beginning to change the game.

Proudly presenting the third chapter in the Life Beyond trilogy: In Search of Giants.

In this journey, we will see how far we’ve come in the search for intelligent life, how they might be communicating, just how advanced they might be, and what it would mean if we really did make contact.

It might take thousands of years to make a discovery. But as long as the mystery endures, the search for giants will continue. It's in our blood to want to know.

  • Intelligent Life on Other Planets: What are the Odds?

    53:23

Title: Intelligent Life on Other Planets: What are the Odds?
    Speaker: Corbin Covault, PhD
    Date: October 29, 2019

  • What Would Life look like on Alien Worlds?

    10:11

What Would Life look like on Alien Worlds?
When we search the cosmos for life, we usually look for planets that look like Earth, after all, if Earth can support life why couldn’t a similar planet. But not all planets look like Earth, some are much hotter and others much smaller. With the diversity of planets, it's worth asking, what would life look like on alien worlds?

We'll discuss two worlds. Atlas: 5,000 light-years away lies a ringed world more than double the size of Earth with twice as much gravity. Janus: Imagine a planet in such a close orbit, that its rotation is locked by the star's gravity so it always shows the same face to its sun, like how we only ever see one side of the Moon. Under such different circumstances, how would life adapt to such extreme worlds?

Despite light-years between planets, life across the universe needs the same basics to survive, food and a reason to reproduce. Despite the vast differences in lifeforms, these common needs could result in some remarkable similarities across the cosmos.

This video was based on the Series Alien Worlds on Netflix, I definitely recommend giving it a watch. If you like this video and want to see a part two on what life would look like on two more imaginary worlds, be sure to let us know in the comments section below. And remember, there is always, more to learn.

  • The Kardashev Scale With Michio Kaku: Can We Become a Type 1 Civilization?

    10:04

Michio Kaku explains the meaning of the Kardashev scale and it's importance in our society. Michio Kaku thinks that the possible transition from type 0 to type 1 is probably going to be the biggest transition in human history. He mentions several examples from science fiction work to demonstrate and help us visualize the concepts involved when measuring a civilization's energy output.

As the name implies the Kardashev scale is named after the soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev who proposed a scale to measure the level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy the civilization in question is able to use.

A type 1 civilization is a Technological level of a civilization that is close to the level presently on our home planet.
There are however 2 other types of civilizations.

Michio Kaku mentions that a type 2 civilization is able to employ the same techniques as a type 1 civilization but to a large number of planetary systems. He explains that this type of civilization is capable of harnessing the energy radiated by its own star. They may be able to construct space mega-structures to attain their energy needs such as a Dyson sphere.

Star lifting is another process where an advanced civilization could remove a substantial portion of a star's matter in a controlled manner for their energy needs.

But perhaps the most fascinating type of civilization is type 3 which is also called a galactic civilization because they are able to colonize most if not all planets and are able to use the energy released from the stars in their host galaxy.

Michio Kaku explains that currently humanity is at level 0. More precisely we may be at 0.7 We have a long way to go to reach the transition from type 0 to type 1 because we might carry a strong risk of self destruction.

  • Becoming a Kardashev Type I Civilization

    16:32

The Kardashev Scale has become a standardized way of classifying (hypothetical) advanced civilizations. The lowest rank, Type 1, is still way ahead of us - but by how much? When will we achieve Type 1 status and exactly how could we plausibly do so? In this video, we go through some estimates of when humanity might become Type 1, and in particular what kind of energy sources we could harness to achieve this feat.

  • Lowell42 Are there alien civilizations on planets orbiting distant stars? The view from ground level

    59:57

Join Lowell Observatory on September 3rd at 6pm for our first ever Lowell42 live stream. At this point, we have exactly one example (Earth) of a planet harboring a civilization. During this discussion, Dr. G. Kent Colbath, a retired geology professor, will consider what we know about life on Earth that might inform or constrain the search for other civilizations orbiting distant stars.

At Lowell42 we’ll delve into deep questions like these. Our goal is to connect you to “life, the Universe and everything.” (Many of you will recall that in Douglas Adams’s comical novel “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” the supercomputer came up with 42 as the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.)

  • A WISE search for large extraterrestrial civilizations: a complementary approach to traditional SETI

    1:22:53

Speaker: Jason T. Wright, Penn. State University
    Slides:

    Abstract:
If alien civilizations exist throughout the universe, many have had billions of years to develop technology, expand their population and energy supplies, and travel across their galaxies. Kardashev classified hypothetical advanced civilizations by the magnitude of their power supply, with Type II civilizations harnessing most of the energy output of their host star, and Type III civilizations using most of the power in their galaxy. As Dyson pointed out in 1960, the waste heat emitted by a such civilizations would easily overwhelm that of their host star or galaxy, distinguishing them from normal astrophysical sources. This approach to SETI makes few assumptions about the behavior of alien civilizations, primarily: conservation of energy, the laws of thermodynamics, and that given the age of the Universe aliens have had time to develop very large energy supplies.

The WISE all-sky mid-infrared survey has dramatically improved our ability to detect such civilizations and to distinguish them from natural astrophysical sources. I will discuss our team's efforts to identify candidate Type II civilizations in the Milky Way and Type III civilizations throughout the low-redshift universe. Because the scope and assumptions of this approach are complementary to those of telecommunication SETI, a null result has the potential to rule out broad classes of proposed resolutions to the Fermi-Hart Paradox, particularly those that invoke organization of advanced alien species across the Milky Way.

The Kardashev Scale, ranks the technological capabilities of a civilization, according to the energy it is able to manipulate and exploit. The scale was invented in 1964 by the Russian astronomer Nikolai Semenovich Kardashev who was looking for signs of extraterrestrial life within cosmic signals and proposed a scale for ranking these hypothetical civilizations based on their energy consumption. So the Kardashev scale was developed as a way of measuring a civilization’s technological advancement based upon how much usable energy it has at its disposal.
The scale has three types that follow the scale of astrophysical structures in our local universe. The basic calibration is based on 3 energy positions on the scale corresponding to the ability to fully manage the energy resources of a inhabited planet (Type I), the star of the respective solar system (Type II) and its galaxy (Type III). Other astronomers have expanded the scale to Type IV and Type V.
Samples of civilizations that could correspond to the Kardashev scale are both terrestrial and other supposedly extraterrestrial civilizations.
Due to the fact that the American astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan wanted to classify our current civilization, he noticed that we are not Type-I yet and he expanded and calibrated the scale before type I. The reason why human race is not even on type-I yet is because we continue to maintain our energy needs from dea* plants and animals, here on Earth. We are just a humble culture type 0 and we still have VERY long distance to go before promoted to a type I civilization).
According to Carl Sagan, in 1900 during the Industrial Revolution period, our terrestrial civilization was at 0.58 while in 2012 it was at 0.72 on the scale. Freeman Dyson estimated that we will probably reach type 1 in 100-200 years, type 2 in the year 11,200 and type 3 in 100,000 to 1,000,000 years.
Before we continue with our explanation to the Kardashev Scale, be sure to like or dislike the video so that we can continue improve and make these videos better for you the viewer. Plus, be sure to subscribe to the channel so that you don’t miss any of our weekly videos!

Now let's examine on a closer look some features of the 4 energy positions. What does each of these categories really mean in literal terms?

    Type 0
A type-0 civilization is based on energy which can derive mainly from sources where energy forms are mildly stored and are found before the specific type 1,2,3. Our culture today belongs to type-0, which uses sources such as coal, oil or natural gas. As we mentioned before, it is understood that we have not reached type-1 in the Kardashev scale yet.

    Type I
A Type I civilization has complete control over the energy of its host planet. As a type I civilization, we would be capable of controlling Earth entirely. So this Civilization has managed to tame and consume the energy offered to it by its own planet, which it fully controls. It would, for example, be capable of collecting all the starlight that falls on the planet. However, the ability to harness all of the Earth's energy would also mean that we could have control of all natural forces. The temperature, the climate of the planet could be controlled in the same way that we could control volcanoes, weather conditions and even earthquakes! It is possible that weaving or even earthquakes can be changed at will by this civilization. So we could influence the nature. At least that's the basic idea. These things are hard to believe, but compared to the advances that can be made in the coming years, imagine that these are just basic and primitive levels of control.
    Type II
The next step ? A Type II civilization .This is the next stage in the evolution of a civilization. At this level the inhabitants who make up such a civilization, can harness the power of their mother star, their Sun not only by turning the light of the star into energy, but by controlling the star itself. It would control the orbit of all planets in that system, harvest asteroids and comets at its leisure, and basically consume the entire solar system.

  • Comparing Earth technology with alien civilizations | The Kardashev Scale

    18:15

THE KARDASHEV SCALE. We have no idea what an alien civilization would look like. Humans are evolved primates. What if an alien species is reptilian? Or more like an insect? Or a hybrid of these? Or maybe something completely unique that we couldn't even imagine.

There is only one set of universal laws that every species must follow. Physics. Specifically energy.

One way to measure a civilization is by its energy consumption. This is done with the Kardashev Scale.

By using the Kardashev Scale, we can address some big questions about alien civilizations. Like: Fermi's Paradox. It's estimated that there are 40 billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way that could support life. Certainly a few of these should have given rise to intelligent life. And if so, where is everyone?

A recent study done by researchers at JPL and CalTech states that when a civilization finally reaches a certain point on the Kardashev Scale, it destroys itself. Which is why we haven't discovered any evidence. They're gone.

And the Kardashev Scale addresses the most worrisome theory of all. If there are advanced civilizations in our universe, it's probably best if we don't make contact with them.

    Let's find out why.

    ==================

The Kardashev scale was created in 1964 by Russian astronomer Dimitri Kardashev, and it rates potential alien civilizations by the amount of energy they are able to utilize.

Why energy usage? Because it’s an important indicator of how technologically advanced a species is.

Take humans, for example, for hundreds of thousands of years, the most energy we were able to create was from burning things.

As our technology advanced, so did our ability to harness energy, although we’ve mostly just made advancements in how we burn things, which is really kind-of embarrassing when you think about it.

Kardashev hypothesized that there are three types of advanced civilizations, type 1 is able to harness all the energy on their home planet, type 2 can harness all the energy in their home star, and type 3 can harness all the energy in their galaxy.

Let’s talk about these one at a time and see what they mean.

    (Type 1)

So what does it mean to harness all the energy in your planet?

It’s a lot more than just burning every last drop of oil out we’ve sucked out of the ground, it’s also harnessing every gust of wind, every ocean wave, every tide, every geothermal vent, and every last photon of sunlight that lands on Earth.

Which scientists have calculated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of ten to the power of 17 watts. That’s ten with 17 zeroes behind it. Almost as much as my last electric bill.

Of course, doing all that would make our planet unlivable, so how does a civilization become type one without destroying itself? Enter nuclear fusion.

If you ever wondered why people make such a big deal about nuclear fusion, consider that to make that same amount of energy, you would need to fuse 280 kg of hydrogen into helium per second.

At that rate, you would use 8.9 x10 to the 9th kilograms of hydrogen per year. That sounds like a lot, but you can pull more hydrogen than that out of 1 cubic kilometer of water.

And our oceans hold 1.3 x 10 to the 9th number of cubic kilometers of water. So, we’ll run out about a trillion years after the sun explodes.

    Speaking of the sun...

    (Type 2)

While the methods to become a type 1 civilization are not quite in our grasp, they at least seem feasible. To imagine a type 2 civilization, we have to get a little more imaginative.

The most widely-known option to collect all the energy from a star is a Dyson sphere.

This idea was proposed by Freeman Dyson in 1960, and it involves building a massive sphere around a star to collect all or most of its energy.

Freeman Dyson is still around, by the way, 91 years old and still kicking, good show old chap.

Such a massive structure would require more materials and manpower than we could ever find here on Earth, but some have suggested self-replicating robots could mine the solar system and construct it on its own.

Especially if it was controlled by an artificial super intelligence here on Earth… just sayin’...

It’s not too far-fetched, really, in fact, many scientists are looking for stars that show signs of interruptions in the light patterns that could signal dyson spheres.

Other ideas involve actually throwing a star into a black hole and then collecting the energy from the accretion disk that forms during what’s called the Penrose Process, which causes the black hole to lose some of it’s angular momentum, which could possibly cause it to eventually lose its rotation and become a Swarzchild black hole. And I have no idea what any of that means.

But if the idea of throwing a star into a black hole sounds looney toons, a type 3 civilization is crazyville.

    (Type 3)

How in the name of Xenu, does a species extract all of the energy in a galaxy?

Well, you can put dyson spheres around every star in a galaxy… That’s only 100 billion or so of them.

Or, you could tap the energy of a supermassive black hole, which most galaxies have in the center,

Gamma ray bursts are the most powerful explosions in the universe, you could tap that,

And there’s a theoretical white hole, that spews matter and energy out of a singularity that you could collect all the energy out of...

Pretty much when you start talking about type 3 civilizations, you’re just playing around in science fiction territory, which is what makes it fun.

Looking up at the stars makes you wonder: what and who is out there? And why haven’t we seen any other intelligent civilizations given the vast size and age of the universe? They’re complicated questions and although we haven’t met any other space-faring species we do have a way of calculating just how many alien civilizations might be out there as well as some rather frightening ideas as to why we might not have met them.

This video is a bit different from most It's Okay To Be Smart videos. It's part of a new PBS miniseries called STELLAR, done in collaboration with Matt O’Dowd from PBS Space Time and Dianna Cowern from Physics Girl. Over six episodes we travel to telescopes, go inside space research centers, and chat with amazing scientists to bring you the most exciting stories about space.

**I figure out how we took a picture of a Black Hole with a telescope the size of Earth

**Matt O’Dowd exploring the oldest quasar ever seen at the Gemini Telescope:

**Physics Girl visits LIGO to learn about gravitational waves:

You'll be able to see future episodes on the Physics Girl, Space Time and It’s Okay to be Smart YouTube channels, as well as the PBS Digital Studios Facebook page.

Stellar is a part of the PBS Summer of Space. They'll be lots of awesome space related content all summer long on PBS. See what's happening at

Imagine having the ability to live forever, travel anywhere in the universe, and harness enough power to create wormholes. Well, if you're part of the ultra-exclusive Type III civilization club, these are just some of the everyday luxuries available. So, how could feeble Earthlings get to this level of power? But more importantly, should we even try? How would our lives transform as a Type III civilization? Would technology work for us or against us? What would it take to get to a Type IV Civilization?

  • The Kardashev Scale | Type 0 Civilization

    4:32

Last time we talked about the Kardashev Scale and how it categorizes civilizations in terms of their energy use. Today we are taking an in-depth look at a type 0 civilization and some of the things they can accomplish.

A type 0 civilization was initially not included on the Kardashev scale. It was later added as the scale was extended by other astronomers. Using Carl Segan’s formula, a type 0 civilization would control about 1 MW of power. But since the Kardashev scale is continuous, we have many civilization subtypes between type 0 and type 1. This means that a Type 0 civilization would include anything from primitive life forms to modern humans of today.

  • Rethinking the Kardashev Scale

    15:27

Today, the Kardashev scale remains a popular method of measuring a civilization's technological advancement based on energy. However, I don't think it's a realistic method and suggest The Kennedy Scale based on technology, energy, and philosophy and the arts

  • Finding Large Extraterrestrial Civilizations with the WISE Telescope

    1:22:58

  • The Kardashev Scale: How To Conquer The Universe

    12:17

In this video we will outline the Kardashev scale, and what technologies and capabilities a civilization would have at each level of the Kardashev scale. A type 1 civilization on the Kardashev scale is one that can access all of the energy available to it on its home world, a type 2 civilization on the Kardashev scale is one that can access all of the energy from its home star, and finally a type 3 civilization on the Kardashev scale is one that can access and make use of the entire energy output of its home galaxy. As we will discuss, there are some options further than this but our main focus today will be on those three.

  • What Do Aliens Look Like? Dr. Bs Extraterrestrial Life

    3:03

Aliens are often imagined as small green humanoids flying around in metal discs. Dr. Frederic Bertley tell us his dream extraterrestrial life has a little more pizzazz and... rollerbladdes. These aliens, he explains, evolved differently than us to live on the smooth roller-rink surface of their planet.

For WOSU's QED with Dr. B, we look to the stars to see how cutting edge science is searching for signs of extraterrestrial life and intelligence. What do you think this E.T. could look like?
