  • Removing Garbage Disposal

    20:38

Over the years, my sink garbage disposals have failed. Something inside rusts through and I have water all under my sink. This is the 3rd time this has happened. So I am tired of it and have decided to remove the disposal and simply tie my sink into the outlet line.

Edit....I have been encouraged to put another garbage disposal into my sink. My reasons can be found at minute marker 19:25

the P-trap which is directly under the sink. This video will show you

  • Things you should NEVER put down your garbage disposal

    1:39

3 Things you must know NOT to put down your garbage disposal:1. never pour hot grease down your drain- This is the culprit on many drains we see. The grease coats the drain lines causing drain blockages that have to be removed by a plumber with specialized tools. One thing that is tough on a drain is drain cleaning chemicals. They may eat away at the grease, but they will also eat the pipes and the disposal causing premature failure and 1,000's in repairs. If grease is blocking the line remember you can always call JD Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning at 919-383-7000
    2. avoid coffee grounds and tea leaves- These types of waste create tight and tough blockages. Coffee grounds and tea leaves will destroy the blades on a garbage disposal and by having dull blades the food waste will not be ground up as well and that will contribute to blockages.
    3. flour, rice, potato, pasta, or vegetable peels - If you are going to do this make sure you have a plumbers phone number because you are sure to interrupt that Thanksgiving meal and need JD Plumbing, Heating and airs help!Always run the faucet with hot water after during and after you flush waste down the drain.

  • How to Safely Clean a Garbage Disposal

    Full Playlist:

Watch more How to Clean Your Kitchen & Bathroom videos:

Does your kitchen smell like a landfill? Try these simple steps to clean out the culprit.

    Warning
Never put your hand in a garbage disposal! Call a professional if you can’t clear it with tongs or pliers.

Step 1: Add ice and salt
For routine cleaning, pour the ice down the drain and then the rock salt. If you don’t have rock salt, use vinegar.

    Tip
Never use bleach or other chemicals, including drain cleaner. These can damage the disposal or splash back!

    Step 2: Run the disposal
Run the cold water and the disposal for five to 10 seconds. The ice and salt or vinegar will clear the grinding elements of any built-up gunk and bits of food.

    Tip
Use cold water only. Hot water can melt fats in foods you are grinding and gum up your disposal’s parts.

    Step 3: Disconnect the disposal
If your disposal is clogged, disconnect it or remove its fuse before you try to remove anything. Use tongs or pliers to remove any objects that can't be ground, such as rubber, glass, or fibrous foods like artichokes.

Step 4: Clear the drain line
Fill your sink with three or four inches of cold water. Remove the drain plug and run the disposal to clear the drain line of debris.

    Step 5: Freshen
Throw lemon peels down the drain (be sure to remove any seeds first), run warm water, and turn on the disposal.

    Step 6: Repeat
Keep your disposal working at its best and your kitchen smelling fresh by cleaning your disposal every couple of weeks.

    Did You Know?
The garbage disposal was invented in 1927 and first sold to consumers in 1938.

  • How to Un-Jam a Garbage Disposal Like a Plumber | Roto-Rooter

    2:47

Kitchen garbage disposal problems can be frustrating. Most disposal jams can be easily fixed, but many homeowners give up and call a plumber to take care of the problem. This helpful Roto-Rooter video will let you in on the professional secrets so you'll be able to un-jam a garbage disposal just like a professional plumber.

First, always be sure whenever you are working on your disposal, that the power to the disposal is off. Next, if you turn the power on and do not hear a buzzing sound, check to see if the local fuse on the disposal has been tripped. You can do this by pushing the reset button located on the bottom of the disposal. If you still aren't hearing any noise, check the main breaker located in your home's breaker box. If you hear buzzing and the jam persists, turn the disposal off and using a 1/4 hex wrench, insert the wrench into the center hole at the bottom of the disposal. Turning the wrench back and forth should release the jam. If you do not have a hex wrench, a dowel or a wooden spoon can be used to do the same through the drain. Simply insert the spoon firmly up against one of the impellers, rotating back and forth until the jam is freed.

If none these work, your local Roto-Rooter plumber will be happy to come out and take a look!

In this video West shows us how to install a garbage disposal from Insinkerator. Insinkerator garbage disposals have long been the preffered brand by many homeowners because of their solid construction, quiet operation and dependable performance.

    Transcript:
Welcome to our garbage disposal installation video. In this video West Harris shows us how to install an Insinkerator Badger One 1/3 horsepower garbage disposal. This garbage disposal features a powerful 1/3 horsepower engine, a rugged steel construction and an effective sound reduction system.
Start by removing the clip ring and fasteners from the bottom of the garbage disposal drain. You have the option to use the included gasket for your drain or plumbers putty. Using putty over the included gasket may provide a better seal and last longer than the gasket.
Clean sink to prevent debris from interfering with the seal under drain. Once the drain has been seated in the sink you may need help for this next part. Ask someone to hold the drain in place from above while you slide the fasteners into position and reattach the clip ring. Tighten the fasteners down, don't over tighten. If you used the plumbers putty instead of the gasket, clean off any of the excess putty from around your garbage disposal's drain.
Now that the drain is installed we can turn our attention back to the garbage disposal itself. We will start by installing the rubber insert into the drain on the side of the garbage disposal. Then we will slide the chrome fastener plate onto the elbow pipe that is included with our garbage disposal. The flared end of the pipe will be installed into the rubber insert that we just installed inside of the garbage disposal. The metal plate can then be fastened to the disposal to form a tight fit that will prevent leaks.
Above your elbow pipe you may notice a small barbed pipe. If you have a dishwasher, the dishwasher drain pipe can be installed onto this fitting. However, since there is no dishwasher involved in this installation we are going to simply let it be.
It is now time to install the garbage disposal. Installation is simple but be careful since garbage disposals are very heavy. Simply slip the disposal into place. If you are looking at the disposal from below, the disposal attachment fitting will rotate on in a clockwise direction.
Attach your Garbage disposal drain to your P trap using the hand fasteners. You should now test your connections by running some water down your garbage disposal drain. If no leaks are present, you are now ready to plug in your disposal and test it.

We hope you enjoyed this brief tutorial.

  • How To Clean A Garbage Disposal

    3:35

The first thing you will need to do is grab the gasket or splash guard on the top of your garbage disposal with your tongs and pull it out of your sink. It is very important that you never, for any reason stick your hand in the garbage disposal. Doing so can lead to serious injury. Once you have your splash guard out of your disposal you may quickly realize that it may be one of the major causes of the smell that was coming from your sink. Grease and food particles get trapped in the creases of the splash guard and can begin to rot which can be a big source of a foul smell. Now take your splash guard and do a deep clean on it. I like to let it soak sink full of soapy dish water, before cleaning it with ta scrubber. If after attempting to deep clean your splash guard, it still smells, you may want to consider replacing it altogether. They are relatively inexpensive and tend to run around $5. Now inspect the inside of your disposal to see if there are any large blockages that may be causing smell. Remember things like grease, stringy vegetables, and fruit pits should NEVER be put down a disposal, They can damage your disposal and plumbing system. Once you have inspected your disposal, and removed any possible blockages, you should then grab your ½ cup of baking soda and pour it down the disposal. Then pour your cup of vinegar into the drain. You will begin to hear it fizz and make noise. Let this combination work for 2-3 minutes. Next grab your boiling water and pour it down the disposal to rinse away the baking soda and vinegar. Now you will need to take your ice and fill up your disposal. This can take 2-3 cups of ice to fill your disposal all the way with ice. Now take your cup of salt and pour it onto your ice. Turn on cold water and then run your garbage disposal until the ice and salt combination is gone. The ice and salt do a great job of helping loosen the buildup of grime inside your sink. Now that your sink is free of most of the cause of the smell, it is time to kill any leftover smell. Make sure you put your splash guard back onto your sink at this point. Take your lemon and put two of the fourths of the lemon into the disposal. Turn on cold water and then run the disposal. Once half of the lemon is gone, go through the same process with the other half. This lemon smell well help eliminate any leftover smell in your disposal. That's it! You disposal should be cleaned smelling great. If you continue to have a bad smell come from your sink, contact a licensed local plumber to have your home worked on professionally.

  • How To Change a Badger Insinkerator Garbage Disposal

    4:31

Changing your garbage disposal is not all that hard. Just like everything you need the right tools. A large Allen wrench will do the trick.

But, take my advice, get these two things: A new cord and Wago lever nuts. These will make your life SO much easier. You can try to string the old cord but I'm telling you, if you're inexperienced with wiring, just get a new one for $10 or so. Easy as pie to install.

The hardest issue I had was actually holding the garbage disposal up with one hand while trying to latch it under the sink with the other. Whew!

  • My Garbage Disposal is Humming But Not Working

    1:51

My garbage disposal is humming but not working. What's wrong with it?

It doesn't want to work. It just wants to sit and hum all day.

Very funny. But I really need it to work.

The humming means the blades aren't working. The problem could be the motor or something else.

Someone said the blades might be stuck.

For the love of any and all Gods, do not put your hand in there to find out. If the blades are jammed by silverware and you put your hand in to remove it, you could lose your fingers.

I know better than that. That's what broom handles are for.

That's not a good idea either, because the fan blades could generate a shower of wood chips.

Then what can I do, other than down into the dank, murky depths?

You might use a jam buster tool to turn the rotor from the bottom of the assembly, to verify it isn't jammed.

We're approaching the point where I'd need to take it apart, and that thing is probably disgusting. I wish I could just reboot it like a computer.

Pushing the reset button won't help if the problem is a jam or the motor. The motor might have burned out.

    Can they fix the motor?

Yes, but given the cost of a service call and parts, you might as well have a new one put in.

I wish I could pour Draino down the drain and clear it up, in case it might be something like grease buildup.

If you've been pouring grease or other stuff down the drain, try a plunger for sinks. You might suck out the gunk or just break it up enough to go down the drain.

I suppose it isn't worse than using the toilet plunger we already have.

It's certainly cheaper than calling a plumber.

Though prevention is a lot less gross.
