What If Earth Orbited UY Scuti?

  • What If Earth Orbited UY Scuti?

    4:47

UY Scuti: It's the largest star that we've ever discovered. And if it were to replace our Sun, it would change a lot more than just the amount of sunscreen you'd have to put on. Like, how long would it take for our planet to orbit this massive star? What would that do to our seasons? And would we even survive a single orbit?

  • What if UY Scuti Explodes into Supernova?

    2:12

UY Scuti is a red supergiant star. It is the largest known star in our entire known universe. It's located 5200 light years away from us. It's mass is 7 - 10 times of sun's mass and diameter of 2.3 billion km.

In a few billion years, UY Scuti will run out of fuel and explode into a supernova. But UY Scuti has very low mass so this explosion will be very weak and we will only see a dot in the night sky.

  • What if Betelgeuse Replaced The Sun?

    2:28

Betelgeuse is a very young star compared to our Sun, only 10 million years old. Betelgeuse has a diameter of 1.2 billion kms with mass roughly 12 times of the Sun.So, What if Betelgeuse replaced the Sun?

When it is placed the Solar system due to it's size, it would reach asteroid belt. And absorb the inner planets including Mercury, Venus, Earth & also Mars

Betelgeuse has a very high gravitational strength as well. That would attract all the other planets and entire solar system will fall into it.

    Lyrics:
    I am UY Scuti
The largest star in our galaxy
Find me in the night sky

    I am UY Scuti
    A Red Supergiant
In the Scutum Constellation am I

    I was First cataloged
    in 1860
by German astronomers at Bonn Observatory

    I was named BD -12 5055
    Until my second survey
I was found to be slightly more bright

That's when I was named UY Scuti
The 38th Variable Star of the Constellation Scutum, Am I

I'm the largest known star in the Milky Way galaxy
But because I'm so far from Earth You need a telescope to see me

I'm 30 Times the Sun's Mass But have a radius more than
Radius 1,700 Times Greater than the Earths Sun, I span

    I am UY Scuti
The largest star in our galaxy
Find me in the night sky

    I am UY Scuti
    A Red Supergiant
In the Scutum Constellation am I

I am 9,500 Light Years away from your Earth
1 Light Year = 5.88 Trillion Miles for what that's worth

I'm known to be one of the most luminous stars
And I am a Red Supergiant
I hope you like me so far

I'm close to the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*,
Galactic Centre which is the center of our galaxy

I'm so large if you replaced your sun with me
My Photosphere Would Span Past Jupiter's Orbit as you can see

I've begun to fuse Helium and continue to fuse Hydrogen
in the shell around my core based on models of Stellar Evolution

After fusing heavy elements, my core will begin to produce iron, disrupting
the balance of gravity and radiation in its core and resulting

In a core-collapse supernova which is expected in stars like me
Look for me in the night's sky within your galaxy

  • What if Happen If Earth Orbited UY Scuti ? || Tamil ||

    4:44

In 1860, German astronomers at the Bonn Observatory first cataloged UY Scuti, naming it BD -12 5055. During a second detection, the astronomers realized it grows brighter and dimmer over a 740-day period, leading astronomers to classify it as a variable star. The star lies near the center of the Milky Way, roughly 9,500 light-years away.

Located in the constellation Scutum, UY Scuti is a hypergiant, the classification that comes after supergiant, which itself comes after giant. Hypergiants are rare stars that shine very brightly. They lose much of their mass through fast-moving stellar winds.

Of course, all stellar sizes are estimates, based on measurements taken from far away.

The complication with stars is that they have diffuse edges, wrote astronomer Jillian Scudder of the University of Sussex. Most stars don't have a rigid surface where the gas ends and vacuum begins, which would have served as a harsh dividing line and easy marker of the end of the star.

Instead, astronomers rely on a star's photosphere, where the star becomes transparent to light and the particles of light, or photons, can escape the star.

As far as an astrophysicist is concerned, this is the surface of the star, as this is the point at which photons can leave the star, Scudder said.

If UY Scuti replaced the sun in the center of the solar system, its photosphere would extend just beyond the orbit of Jupiter. The nebula of gas stripped from the star extends even farther out, beyond the orbit of Pluto to 400 times time the Earth-sun distance.

    3:12

Around 7,500 light years away, Eta Carinae stellar system is located. Eta Carinae is a binary system and it contains 2 stars orbiting each other. Their masses are 150 and 30 solar masses respectively. Together these stars are so bright that their luminosity is 5 more than million times that of Sun.

In 1840s, astronomers noticed that, Eta Carinae's has suddenly become brighter becoming 2nd brightest star in the sky. Research showed that, Eta Carinae has erupted which is known as The Great Eruption. This eruption was so gigantic that Eta Carinae lost at least 30 solar masses.

  • What If Jupiter Became a Star?

    3:18

What would it take for Jupiter to ignite and become our second sun? What if Jupiter gained just a little bit more mass during its formation period, and then ignited to become a star? How different would our Solar System have turned out? Would having another star in the middle of the Solar System mess with the orbits of the planets? How much heat would it send towards Earth? Would we see it from here?

Jupiter has more than twice the mass of all the planets in the Solar System combined. It doesn’t have a solid ground and is made up of the same elements as the Sun. And yet, it’s not a star.

    Lyrics:
    I am Betelgeuse
And I’m nearing the end of my life
One of the top 10 Brightest Stars up in the night's sky

    I am a Red Supergiant
    expected to explode
    into a Supernova in
    100,00 years or so

    I received the name Betelgeuse
    in 1836
By Sir John Herschel an astronomer and a great scientist

I’m the second brightest star in the Orion Constellation
After the star Rigel, We’re seen from any of Earths nations

My diameters about 700 times that of your sun
And I’m 640 Light Years from Earth
    that’s quite a run

But my surface temperature’s 6000 Degrees in Fahrenheit
Cooler than your suns surface 10,000 degrees yeah that’s right

I’m so massive if you replaced your sun with me
I’d reach past the orbit of Jupiter I’m gigantic you see

I’m considered a young star at just 10 Million Years Old
Soon to explode into a Supernova
    Scientists say so

    I am Betelgeuse
And I’m nearing the end of my life
One of the top 10 brightest stars up in the night's sky

    I am a red supergiant
    expected to explode
    into a supernova in
    100,000 years or so

A Red Supergiant is an aging giant star
that has consumed its core’s supply of hydrogen fuel that’s what they are

Helium has accumulated in my core so well
And Hydrogens undergoing nuclear fusion in my outer shells

When my outer shells expand I take on a red color
because I’m cooler than I was I’m happy to discover

Red supergiants are the largest known stars in the universe
And I’m expected to supernova onto the next verse

During fusion, heavier atoms are created until my core is Iron
That’s when I’ll run out of fuel without even trying

When that happens to a star as massive as me
the entire star collapses and explodes as a Supernova you see

When I do Supernova I’ll create quite a sight
some predict I’ll look like your full moons brightest light

The radiation I’d put off from becoming a supernova
wouldn’t affect Earth because I’m 640 Light years over

    I am Betelgeuse
And I’m nearing the end of my life
One of the top 10 brightest stars up in the night's sky

    I am a red supergiant
    expected to explode
    into a supernova in
    100,000 years or so

  • UY Scuti - The Largest Star Ever Discovered? OOTW

    17:59

When considering star size, we are incredibly restricted with what we can't measure - the vast majority of the universe's stars lie outside of our galaxy, and are too far away to ever be measured. In spite of this, we have discovered some truly magnificent stars in our own backyard. Today, we will be looking at the biggest - UY Scuti. This magnificent titan of the cosmos is a staggering 2.3BN KM in diameter, and that is the least incredible of some of the numbers associated with it. Today, we will be analysing this star, and some of its close competition in the race for the largest star ever discovered.

  • ★ The Biggest MONSTER Stars - Compared to our Sun

    2:45

Looking up at the sky inspires deep moments of introspection and curiosity. It’s easy to feel small under a starry night sky.

    ★ TOP 10 - Best of Hubble Space Telescope - 2015 ►

THE SUN is the star at the center of the Solar System and is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is a nearly perfect spherical ball of hot plasma with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. Its diameter is about 109 times that of Earth, and it has a mass about 330,000 times that of Earth, accounting for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, whereas the rest is mostly helium, and much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron

THE PISTOL STAR is a blue hypergiant and is one of the most luminous known stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is one of many massive young stars in the Quintuplet cluster in the Galactic Center region. The star owes its name to the shape of the Pistol Nebula, which it illuminates. It is located approximately 25,000 light years from Earth in the direction of Sagittarius. It would be visible to the naked eye as a fourth magnitude star if it were not for the interstellar dust that completely hides it from view in visible light.

VY CANIS MAJORIS (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. It is one of the largest stars (at one time the largest known) and also one of the most luminous of its type, and has a radius of approximately 1,420 ± 120 solar radii (equal to a diameter of 13.2 astronomical units, or about 1,976,640,000 km), and is located about 1.2 kiloparsecs (3,900 light-years) from Earth.

UY SCUTI is a bright red supergiant and pulsating variable star in the constellation Scutum. It is one of the leading candidates for being the largest known star by radius and is also one of the most luminous of its kind. It has an estimated average median radius of 1,708 solar radii, or a diameter of 2.4 billion km (1.5 billion mi; 15.9 AU); thus a volume 5 billion times that of the Sun. It is approximately 2.9 kiloparsecs (9,500 light years) from Earth.

  • What If a Magnetar Collided With a Black Hole?

    4:15

In the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way, there is a supermassive black hole feeding on nearby stars. It's called Sagittarius A*. And if a giant gravitational monster slowly eating the galaxy isn't terrifying enough, there is another cosmic monstrosity lurking around it. Could they, one day, come a little too close and collapse on each other? What would be left of the Milky Way if they did? Would there be even a slight chance that the Earth could get out of that safely?

  • What If a Massive Gravitational Wave Hit Earth?

    6:24

1.3 billion years ago, two orbiting massive black holes, circling each other at 250 times a second, collided in a violent, universe-rippling explosion that sent waves of energy throughout the cosmos. In its wake, a new supermassive black hole formed over 60 times bigger than our Sun. Fast forward to September 2015, gravitational waves from this ancient cosmic event finally struck Earth. Luckily, the gravitational waves weakened over such a great distance. But what if we weren't so lucky? If a couple of black holes in our solar system collided, could we survive? What would happen to Earth if we got hit by massive gravitational waves? What causes these waves? How can we detect them?
