What If Humans Were Cold-blooded Creatures? | Unveiled

  • What If Humans Were Cold-blooded Creatures? | Unveiled

    7:57

Human beings are warm-blooded mammals. It's a fact of basic science. But, what if they weren't? How would our lives be different if we were actually cold-blooded? In this video, Unveiled discovers how our bodies would change for a cold-blooded lifestyle, the dangers we'd face but also the surprising benefits we'd suddenly enjoy. Scientifically speaking, it's about more than just an advanced race of hyper-intelligent lizard people... What do you think would happen if humans were cold-blooded?

This is Unveiled, giving you incredible answers to extraordinary questions!

    5:53

Warm-blooded creatures, like birds and mammals can maintain a body temperature which is higher than their environment. While Cold-blooded animals like reptiles and fishes cannot regulate their internal temperature, it actually varies based on external temperature.
    Now, if humans were cold-blooded:
Firstly, sun-bathing would become extremely popular because cold-blooded animals need to first warm-up in order to remain active.
Secondly, tourism would take a big hit as it is not easy for a cold-blooded animal to easily adjust to different climatic conditions like a warm-blooded animal does.
Thirdly, restaurant industry will suffer as cold-blooded animals require much less food as well as energy.
On the flip side, as less bacteria and viruses can survive in low temperatures, there will be less chance of infection to us.

  • What If Humans Became Cold-Blooded?

    3:55

Have you ever met someone who always feels cold, even when everyone else is warm? We tend to joke that these people are cold-blooded, but do we even know what that means?

Having cold blood involves more than just needing a few more blankets than everyone else. If we all suddenly became cold-blooded instead of warm, our lives would be completely different.

Why would we need to eat less food? Could we only survive in warm climates? And how might our cold blood help with space exploration? Here's what would happen if humans became cold blooded.

  • Warm-Blooded vs. Cold-Blooded: What’s The Difference?

    4:28

Some animals are warm-blooded, while others are cold-blooded. What sets them apart, and what advantages does each kind have over the other?

    Read More:
    Animal Body Types - Basics

“Endotherms are animals that primarily produces its own heat.
Ectotherms are animals that primarily gains heat through the environment.”

    Dinosaurs neither warm-blooded nor cold-blooded

“Dinosaurs were neither sluggish like lizards nor high-energy like mammals, but something in between, a study suggests.”

What Is a Cold Blooded Animal?

“A cold blooded animal, or ectotherm, is one that does not have an internal mechanism for regulating its body temperature.”

What Is the Difference between Warm-Blooded and Cold-Blooded Animals?

“The terms cold-blooded and warm-blooded are misleading because cold-blooded animals' blood is not necessarily cold, it just varies based on the temperature of the environment.”

  • Why mammal meat is bad for humans | John Pepper

    57:26

Eating red meat (meat from other mammals) increases our risk for cancer, and for several other diseases resulting from chronic inflammation. This is uniquely true for humans, among all species on earth, and it results from uniquely human quirks of evolution and biochemistry. I’ll explain this.

Dr. Pepper received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Michigan, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Santa Fe Institute, where he now serves on the External Research Faculty. His research focuses on the theory of multilevel selection and evolution, and on applications of this theory. Currently, he is working primarily on applications of evolutionary theory to complex diseases, especially cancer. His 50 peer-reviewed publications on cancer biology, on behavioral ecology, and on evolutionary theory and its applications, have been cited an average of 31 times each.

  • Inside the Mind of a Cold-Blooded Killer | Psychopath | Only Human

    49:03

There are few more emotive words in the English language than psychopath - a clinical term for a condition that only recently has begun to be properly defined. It describes a dangerous pattern of behaviour, which, although it’s been recognised for the better part of a century, is little understood. Every decade has produced its own particular brand of psychopath, whose horrific crimes have defied any kind of rational explanation.

  • Infectious Diseases Endanger Marine Creatures, Habitats and World Food

    43:07

Warming oceans, aquaculture and global pollution are contributing to the spread of infectious diseases across the world’s oceans, endangering marine organisms, habitats and global food resources. Researchers focused on sea grass and starfish diseases, oyster herpes, and salmon viruses will quantify the chain reactions such diseases set off. They will highlight the diagnostic value of artificial intelligence, the detection ability of sophisticated molecular tools and the surveillance capabilities of drones in their efforts. Disease outbreaks that threaten the marine food chain from top and bottom are increasing
with warming waters and threatening the stability and abundance of ocean food stocks. Drew Harvell will share research on outbreaks affected by ocean warming that impair both the bottom and top of oceanic food chains. She will discuss a disease spreading through seagrass meadows that is eroding a foundational Pacific Ocean habitat essential
to marine species. A massive epidemic swept through West Coast starfish during the same ocean warming period, affecting over twenty species and endangering a pivotal predator. The loss of predators has devastated kelp beds essential to fish health. Carolyn Friedman will share research on the emergence of variants to the Ostreid herpesvirus that are particularly deadly for Pacific oysters and threaten other mollusks. Working with multidisciplinary and global research teams, Friedman will share research that is expanding understanding of the conditions that spark outbreaks and that have led to innovative tools to blunt such conditions. Friedman also will preview findings about how best to forecast impacts of the deadly herpes variants to inform efforts to protect oyster stocks. Kristina Miller will present global research that has identified nine previously unknown viruses, and 47 different viruses, bacteria and parasites that pose further risks to wild salmon dying at accelerated rates. Miller will identify diseases having the greatest negative effects on salmon stocks in the Pacific Northwest and point to the diagnostic value and detection ability of sophisticated molecular tools to deepen understanding of cumulative impacts of stressors and disease. Threats to valuable wild salmon runs posed by aquaculture cultivation also will be examined.

No one really knows for sure exactly what would happen if our Sun suddenly disappeared. But if you use science to look at some of logical things that would likely happen, you would get a fairly accurate idea of the chain of events that would take place if our Sun suddenly disappeared from our solar system.

It should be made clear that the Sun can’t be suddenly snuffed out like fire. Nor will it simply stop burning one day. However, it’s an interesting concept to go through the stages of what would happen next.

So if you’re curious what life on Earth would be like, and what would happen to the Earth if the sun suddenly vanished, then keep watching.

    9:29

Sharks have the reputation of being cold-blooded killers that will attack and try to eat just about anything. But in reality, they are actually a lot pickier than many people realize - Attacks on humans are very very rare. But even the cold-blooded portion isn't even true - at least not when it comes to Great Whites. Because they are in fact part of a small group of sharks that can elevate their body temperatures above the water temperature - effectively becoming warm-blooded. Here's how they do it.

Why Some Countries Refrigerate Their Eggs And Others Don't

The Curious Case of the Xzhibit Egg

    In this video:

Up until only a few years ago, it was thought by many scientists that Honey bee hives were kept warm by pupae in the brood and that the bees would often congregate there to warm themselves up from the pupae. Recently, this was found not to be the case when a new Honey bee job was discovered, that of “heater bees.” Bees of almost all ages can perform this function by either vibrating their abdomens or they can also decouple their wings from their muscles, allowing them to vigorously use these muscles without actually moving their wings. This can heat their bodies up to about 111° Fahrenheit (44° C), which is about 16° F (9° C) hotter than their normal body temperature.
