    In November, 1884, the New York Times ran a pretty interesting story. An astronomer, known only by the name, “Arndt” claimed to have discovered a cubic planet, just beyond the orbit of Neptune. Less than 100 years later, another discovery was made. This time, by a man who not only named the planet, but who also had maps, and sketches of its alien life forms.

    Earth is spherical in shape because of gravity. Earth's gravity pulls everything equally towards its center and thus gives it a spherical shape

    Now, if the earth was cube-shaped, then the following things might have happened.

    Firstly, it would look weird.

    Secondly, just like gravity, our weight would be different at different places on earth. This is because the 8 corners of the cube would be much further away from the cube's center as compared to the rest of the cube. But this would be good news for people who are over-weight and lazy. Now they can just go to the corners and voila, their weight gets reduced.

    Thirdly, due to low gravitational force, the cube corners would have very less atmospheric cover & almost no water, thus rendering them inhospitable.

    Diameter of earth would increase from 8,000 miles to 16,000 miles. If the density of earth remains same, then its mass will increase 8-fold. Earth's gravity will naturally double. This will have major consequences.

    Firstly, our weight will double. All the gyms will definitely see increased enrolments. Secondly, our bones will not be able to support our increased weight. Thirdly, our hearts will have to work double hard to make sure blood reaches all the parts of our body. Fourthly, birds, airplanes, choppers will all fall down to the ground. Fifthly, trees will not be able to stand upright. Most of them will fall down. Finally, if we fall down, it will hurt twice as much.

    There will always be things in this world that you never imagined even existed. That’s why we at Bright Side would like to share the following curious and fascinating facts about seemingly ordinary things.

    What would happen if... Do you ever get lost in thought with “What if…” questions? “What if I change my job?” “What if I won the lottery?” But what if we start asking more global, perhaps less realistic, questions?
    What if the Earth was a cube? What if it was flat or two times bigger? Watch the answers to the most googled questions about our planet!

    What if you drilled a hole through the Earth?
    You would also really cut down your travel time. It would only take you 42 minutes to end up on the other side of the planet. But if you’re in the US, you better be careful and grab and inflatable raft before you jump through that Earth-piercing hole. In a little under half an hour, you’d wind up smack dab in the middle of the Indian Ocean! And if you happen to be hanging out in Chile when this bright idea comes to mind, hurray! You could be chowing down on some authentic Chinese cuisine for lunch.
    First off, depending on where you start drilling, expect anywhere from 20 to 40 miles of continental crust. After that, you’ll have to get through almost two miles of the solid rock of Earth’s mantle. Then, you’ll be seeing the outer core of liquid iron burning at around 10,000°F! FYI, that’s as hot as the surface of the sun! Not to mention this outer core is the size of Mars! Okay, so you’ve gotten through the outer core, now you’re looking at the solid Moon-sized inner core.

    SUMMARY
    - You might not know this or maybe you just forgot since it’s just been way too many years since your school days, but our Earth sits on its axis at a 23.5° angle. And it’s a good thing too; this is why we have all our seasons.
    - Sorry to the Flat Earth Society, but your theory just doesn’t hold up! If this was the case, we would have some serious problems with gravity. It would work as it should, pulling straight down, but only in the center of the disk. If you were moving away from the center, it would begin to tug more horizontally, and this would be totally insane.
    - Let's imagine that the Earth starts to rotate just 1 mile per hour faster. The sea level would rise by just a few inches around the equator because if the planet spins faster around its waistline, some water will migrate there from the poles. However, it would take you a couple of years to notice it.
    A cubic Earth would be a very different planet from the one we live on today. First off, at the center of each face, gravity would be at its strongest. That's where all water would collect. As for the edges of the planet, they would look like barren lifeless rocks.
    - What if our planet had rings? Well, they would look different depending on where you were. These rings would most likely go parallel with the equator. So, near the equator, you'd see them as thin columns of light disappearing somewhere far in the sky.
    - If there were no Moon, Earth's day would shorter. It would happen because, without the moon, our planet would spin faster. So, instead of complaining about never having enough time in the day, you’d be wishing to have at least 24 hours!
    - If our planet was twice its current size, its gravitational force would be two times stronger. So, trees would be thick and tall, and plants stiff and tough. Animals would also be noticeably bigger, more massive, and with thick legs to support their increased weight due to the gravity.

    The earth spins at a speed of 1000 miles per hour. Its atmosphere also moves along with it at a constant speed. If the earth stops spinning suddenly, the atmosphere would still be in motion, sending everything on the earth’s surface, flying into the atmosphere.

    Now, earth’s spinning generates a centrifugal force which is responsible for the huge bulge of water around the equator. No spinning means no centrifugal force. This water would migrate towards the poles, where gravity is the strongest, leaving behind a giant landmass.

    Also, remember that, even though the earth stops spinning, it is still revolving around the sun. This means, we would experience a 6 month day, followed by 6 month night. Some experts also believe that earth’s rotation generates its magnetic field. Without rotation, there would be no magnetic field to protect us from the harmful solar winds, making it extremely difficult to survive.

    If it was just 5 seconds, we wouldn’t notice changes in our breathing.

    But do you know what would happen around us?

    Earth’s crust contains 45% oxygen. Without oxygen, crust would crumble, causing the ground to crumble and we would be in freefall. Buildings, bridges and concrete structure would crumble into dust, as oxygen is the binding agent for concrete. Cars would stop, and planes would fall from sky as their combustion engines wouldn’t work without oxygen. Also, losing oxygen means losing almost 21% air pressure. This would cause our inner ear to explode, causing hearing loss. It would also become darker suddenly.

    Do you know why?

    For sunlight to reach us, it needs to bounce off air particles like oxygen, dust etc. No oxygen means much fewer particles to bounce off, thus much darker.

  • What If The Earth Were Flat?

    Today, it's nearly impossible to believe the Earth is anything but round. But for most of our history, humans have thought Earth was flat.

    The one concept our ancient ancestors were missing was gravity. Gravity's effects are the key to determining whether the Earth is actually flat, or not.

    On a sphere, gravity pulls in the same direction everywhere on the surface. But on a disc, gravity changes direction as you move toward the edge.

    At the center, you feel a downward pull just like on spherical Earth. But as you move out, gravity starts pulling sideways as well as a downwards.

    This would wreak havoc on sports played in different parts of the world. A ball thrown straight up in the air mid-way out, would curve down and backward toward the disc's center. Plus, a ball thrown mid-way out wouldn't go nearly as high or far as a ball thrown up at the edge where gravity's downward pull is practically zero.

    But sports are just the beginning. Since plant stems grow opposite to the direction of gravity, an effect called negative gravitropism, you'll see forests grow at an increasingly sharp angle the farther you are from the center.

    Continue toward the edge and you feel like you're climbing a hill that's growing steeper with each step as the backward pull of gravity takes over. At Earth’s end, that hill will feel like a 90-degree cliff, pulling you back to the center. But if you could make it over the edge, and stand on the thin outer part of the disc, you'll feel downward pull just like on spherical Earth.

    However, living here would be like living in a desert. Gravity's backward effects pull on the oceans too, making it impossible for any water to reach the edge. Instead, sea levels will gradually rise as you travel in, making the world's center an aquatic metropolis.

    So, the next time you see an apple fall straight to the ground, thank your lucky stars that Earth is round. Because if it were flat, that apple might actually hit you in the face.

  • Whose Poop is Cube shaped? | #aumsum #kids #science #education #children

    Wombats are the only creatures in the world, whose poop is cube-shaped. They excrete around 80 to 100 cubes every night.

    But why cubes?

    Wombats live in dry environments. Their long intestinal tract and slow digestive process help them to absorb every drop of water from food, producing dry and compact poop.

    Also, according to experts, the final 8% of the intestine varies in elasticity. Here, some parts of the intestinal wall are stretchy, while some are stiff. The stiffer parts might be creating distinct edges, thus shaping the poop into cubes.

    Besides this, cube-shaped poop also helps wombats to mark their territory.

    Do you know how?

    Wombats usually poop on rocks or logs. As the poop is cube-shaped, it doesn't roll off, stays in place and helps ward off other wombats.

  • What If Earths Topography Was Inverted?

    1. Watch the ENTIRE video before you ask a question. I explain at 4:28 what to do if no corners are in the right place. At 4:55 when I say that I perform the dodge, that means I perform the dodge. I don't show it because I've already showed earlier in the video what it looks like and what to do afterwards.

    2. If your yellow cross is already solved, skip the FACE step and go straight to the PUSH step.
    If your four vertical bars are all solved, skip the PUSH step and go straight to the DODGE step.
    If your corners are all in the correct places, skip the DODGE step and go straight to the twister (the down-left-up-right move).

    3. If your whites get messed up while doing the final twister algorithm, one of THREE things happened:

    A. You forgot the final bottom layer to the right move. Remember, when the corner's yellow sticker goes to the top, you're not done! You still have to finish the algorithm by turning the bottom layer to the right.

    B. You forgot to turn ONLY the top layer after solving a corner. Turning the whole cube after you solve a corner is INCORRECT. Do the algorithm COMPLETELY (either 2 or 4 times) and then turn ONLY the top layer to the next one, exactly as I explain at 5:27.

    C. You have a corner twist that you accidentally caused in previous use. This makes the cube impossible to solve with regular turns. Just take any corner on the cube, twist it clockwise, and try again. If it still doesn't work, take any corner on the cube, twist it clockwise, and try again (it will definitely work this time if you do it right). If you want to be able to tell if it's solvable or not, scroll down to the bottom of the description!

    4. If you still need help, watch my example solves! If you want to get faster, check out my Solving Faster tutorials!

    5. If you have followed all of the above steps, and still cannot solve your cube, please ask a specific question using a time stamp, and I will gladly help you until your problem is completely solved.

    Dodge: U R U' L' U R' U' L
    Twister: R' D' R D

    The FACE gets you the yellow cross.
    The PUSH gets you the vertical bars.
    The DODGE puts the yellow corners in the correct places.
    The TWISTER twists the yellow corners until they are solved.

    •HOW TO READ THEM

    F Front face clockwise
    U Up (top) face clockwise
    R Right face clockwise
    L Left face clockwise
    D Down (bottom) face clockwise

    ' Actually, turn that face counterclockwise
    2 Actually turn it twice (in either direction)

    HOW TO TELL IF A CUBE IS SOLVABLE (or if you have a corner twist)

    Get to the spot where all you have left is the twister algorithm.
    Grab paper and a pencil and examine each of your four corners:

    •If it is solved (yellow on top), write a 0 on the piece of paper.
    •If it is rotated clockwise (yellow on the right side), write a 1.
    •If it is rotated counterclockwise (yellow on left), write a –1.

    You should have FOUR different numbers on that paper, one for each corner. Add them all together!

    •If your total is 0, 3 or –3, your cube is solvable!
    •If your total is 1 or –2, take one of the yellow corners and twist it counterclockwise, and your cube will be solvable!
    •If your total is –1 or 2, twist one corner clockwise.

    There you have it!

    However, let’s say the Earth could be made into a cube. Gravity would be strongest at the center of each face (since the force of gravity increases the closer to the centre of gravity).Anywhere you go is going to feel like your climbing up a steep Hill.
    On a cube Earth gravity strongest at the centre of each of its faces, so further from the center the more you will feel it's pull. As a result, all water, and indeed our own atmosphere would be drawn towards the center of the faces.

    All planets are spherical to a certain degree, but have you ever wondered why? Let’s step 4.5 billion years back in time. A huge cloud of gas and dust, known as a nebula, collapsed and formed a superheated star. This star, as a result of its gravitational pull, attracted all nearby matter and created a massive rotating disk of debris around its center. This debris collided with each other, exchanging mass, heating up with friction, and eventually growing into massive bodies with strong gravitational centers. This was the birth of our planets. On any given planet, the gravitational pull is equal from all sides, down towards the center. This accounts for the spherical shape of planets. In fact, all significantly massive objects are spherical because of their strong gravitational pull, and extreme masses.

    This idea came from my 4 year old daughter after she saw me turning the sphere and said it looked like the earth so I had to paint it!
