  • NASA’s $3.5 Billion Idea To Save Earth From A Supervolcano Apocalypse

    4:20

Yellowstone National Park sits atop a massive supervolcano that’s considered one of the greatest volcano threats in the county.  While experts estimate that a super-eruption might not happen for another few million years, NASA scientists performed a thought experiment to determine how we could prevent Yellowstone from ever erupting again. Their hypothetical idea involves cooling the volcano down by pumping cold water into a series of wells around its perimeter. If implemented, the scenario could potentially save Earth from a super-volcano apocalypse.

    5:19

In this 4th episode, we compare the scale, power and size of several infamous volcanoes and how they compare in size to others. From VEI index 1 to 8, we compare the power of eruptions of volcanoes from Stromboli (VEI 1) to Eyjafjallajökull (VEI 4) to Krakatoa (VEI 6) and even to super volcanoes such as Yellowstone (VEI 8) and even hyper-volcanoes!

    Note:
Mt Tambora (VEI 7) has wrong plume height and tephra released, the correct one should be: Plume Height: 40km/25mi, Tephra released: 160km3.
Rinjini is spelled wrongly, it should be Rinjani
Additionally, Hyper-Volcano is not a real word and does not exist! But it sounds amazing!

  • How to survive a volcanic eruption | Survival Science with Huw James | Head Squeeze

    5:25

Have you ever found yourself in the path of molten lava? Has the volcano you're climbing suddenly erupted and you don't know what to do? Well keep watching because Huw James has all you need to know.

The earth is built on tectonic plates that move around on the mantle. Sometimes these plates move around and come together to form mountain chains like the Himalayas, some rub together and set off earthquakes, and some like Mount Etna, interact and one plate goes underneath the other.

    So here are our tips:

Listen out for a rumble and keep an eye on tremors

Keep a radio close so you can listen out for advance warnings

Protect yourself from volcanic ash. It is very nasty stuff

Do not get in your car as the ash will catch up with you, ruin your engine, and you will be stuck in the danger zone! Remember all those flights were cancelled when Eyjafjallajökull started erupting in 2010?

Keep an emergency supply of water to stay hydrated

    And Good Luck!

    How Eyjafjallajokull unfolded:

Did you know Mount Etna erupted recently and it started raining rocks!

For more experiments on Mount Etna check out Huw's video on how to find north:

  • What Would Happen If Yellowstone Supervolcano Erupted?

    40

A supervolcano lies beneath Yellowstone National Park but shouldn’t erupt for thousands of years. If it did erupt, it could have some pretty extreme effects on the surrounding areas. For starters, it would likely cover the ground with as much as 4 inches of gray ash. In addition, the supervolcano would spew sulfur dioxide, a gas that can lead to acid rain. The explosion likely wouldn't wipe out human life, but it certainly would be destructive.

  • Yellowstone supervolcano: Volcano could erupt faster than previously thought - TomoNews

    5:56

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — A new study suggests Yellowstone's supervolcano could become active in just a few decades if the right conditions developed.

Arizona State University researchers analyzed minerals in ancient fossilized ash from the most recent mega-eruption and believe the supervolcano became active after two injections of magma into the reservoir underneath the caldera, National Geographic reported.

They found the minerals showed that the critical changes in temperature and composition built up over a few decades.

Geologists previously thought it took centuries for supervolcanoes to go active.

Supervolcanoes have an eruption magnitude of 8 on the Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) and spit out more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of hot rock and ash, according to Science Alert.

For now Yellowstone's supervolcano hasn't shown any indications of an eruption, although experts agree there's no way of knowing when the next blast will occur.

  • Yellowstone supervolcano eruption simulation

    2:15

Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.Yellowstone, the first National Park in the U.S. and widely held to be the first national park in the world,is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park.It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.
Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years.Aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. Management of the park originally fell under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Interior. However, the U.S. Army was subsequently commissioned to oversee management of Yellowstone for a 30-year period between 1886 and 1916. In 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year. Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than 1,000 archaeological sites.
Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 km2), comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges.Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years.Half of the world's geothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism.Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. The park is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest remaining nearly-intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone.
Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles have been documented, including several that are either endangered or threatened. The vast forests and grasslands also include unique species of plants. Yellowstone Park is the largest and most famous megafauna location in the Continental United States. Grizzly bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk live in the park. The Yellowstone Park bison herd is the oldest and largest public bison herd in the United States. Forest fires occur in the park each year; in the large forest fires of 1988, nearly one third of the park was burnt. Yellowstone has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, boating, fishing and sightseeing. Paved roads provide close access to the major geothermal areas as well as some of the lakes and waterfalls. During the winter, visitors often access the park by way of guided tours that use either snow coaches or snowmobiles.

What would happen if the Yellowstone supervolcano erupted?

If the supervolcano underneath Yellowstone National Park ever had another massive eruption, it could spew ash for thousands of miles across the United States, damaging buildings, smothering crops, and shutting down power plants. It'd be a huge disaster.

  • Eruption of a SUPERVOLCANO: effects on Earth & dangers of Yellowstone

    1:25

A volcano capable of erupting over 1,000 km3 of volcanic rocks, ash and lava within the shortest amounts of time are called the supervolcanoes. Modern people have never witnessed an eruption of such power and its devastating results, as the last supervolcano, supposedly erupted over 74 thousand years in Indonesia.

The attention of scientists is attentively fixed on the problem of supervolcanoes, as they are thousands of times more powerful and devastating that an average eruption and there is one supervolcano, which shown unusually fierce activity in the last years - the Yellowstone.

Since 2004, the Yellowstone region has seen some extreme activity, which shown how the heat from below was melting the asphalt on American roads.

Some experts say that in a case of a possible Yellowstone eruption 2/3 of the territory of the USA may be devastated as a 10-foot layer of ash could spread up to 1,000 miles away. This will make over 65% of the country completely uninhabitable.

If you would like to know more scientific facts about volcanoes in general and the Yellowstone supervolcano in particular, please check out this interactive video presentation:

We have put together a list of scientific facts in the video and here are just some of them:

    - the unusual formation of Pele’s tears and Pele’s hair;

    - the tallest volcano in the Solar system;

    - which volcano showed the fastest growing speed?

    - the most active volcano in the last century;

    - and many more to come.

Please leave your thoughts and ideas blow.

    Thanks for your time!

  • End of the World - The Yellowstone Super Volcano Erupts - Documentary

    42:05

The Yellowstone Caldera is a volcanic caldera and supervolcano located in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, sometimes referred to as the Yellowstone Supervolcano. The caldera and most of the park are located in the northwest corner of Wyoming. The major features of the caldera measure about 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72 km).[4]

The caldera formed during the last of three supereruptions over the past 2.1 million years: the Huckleberry Ridge eruption 2.1 million years ago (which created the Island Park Caldera and the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff); the Mesa Falls eruption 1.3 million years ago (which created the Henry's Fork Caldera and the Mesa Falls Tuff); and the Lava Creek eruption approximately 630,000 years ago (which created the Yellowstone Caldera and the Lava Creek Tuff).
Studies and analysis may indicate that the greater hazard comes from hydrothermal activity which occurs independently of volcanic activity. Over 20 large craters have been produced in the past 14,000 years, resulting in such features as Mary Bay, Turbid Lake, and Indian Pond which was created in an eruption about 1300 BC.

In a 2003 report, USGS researchers proposed that an earthquake may have displaced more than 77 million cubic feet (2,200,000 m3) (576,000,000 US gallons) of water in Yellowstone Lake, creating colossal waves that unsealed a capped geothermal system and led to the hydrothermal explosion that formed Mary Bay.[41][42]

Further research shows that very distant earthquakes reach and have effects upon the activities at Yellowstone, such as the 1992 7.3 magnitude Landers earthquake in California’s Mojave Desert that triggered a swarm of quakes from more than 800 miles (1,300 km) away, and the 2002 7.9 magnitude Denali fault earthquake 2,000 miles (3,200 km) away in Alaska that altered the activity of many geysers and hot springs for several months afterward.

In 2016, the United States Geological Survey announced plans to map the subterranean systems responsible feeding the area's hydrothermal activity. According to the researchers, these maps could help predict when another super-eruption occurs.
