And, here you are. On Earth. 66 million years ago. It’s one of the warmest periods in the planet’s history. There are no icecaps yet – everything is lush and green. Dinosaurs roam the Earth. Massive sauropods peacefully chew on flowering plants and trees, their young ones following closely by their side. But what is that bright spot in the sky? It grows bigger, brighter. This is the asteroid! Little do the great reptiles know: today marks the beginning of one of the largest mass extinction events in Earth’s history – ¾ of life on our planet will be wiped out...

So what happened after the asteroid hit the Earth 66 years ago? The cosmic monster falling toward the Earth was the size of Mount Everest. At least 6 miles wide and weighing 460 trillion tons, the meteor was coming in hot…and fast. 12 miles per second, heading right for the Yucatan Peninsula in present-day Mexico. At that speed, it could travel from LA to New York in under 4 minutes!

You probably remember the popular children's animated series The Land Before Time, about a group of little dinosaur friends looking for the Great Valley after a major earthquake. In ancient times, natural disasters happened much more often than today, and at some point they put an end to the whole race of giant reptiles. This happened 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. It was then that dinosaurs, as well as sea reptiles and flying lizards, completely disappeared from the face of the Earth. But do you know what happened after they went extinct? If not, you've found the right place: today we will be looking into that.

When the dinosaur-killing asteroid struck Earth, most of the impact energy was directed outwards and upwards into space. Only 1% of the force traveled down into the ground, but it was enough to ring the planet like a bell and wipeout species around the globe. Only those creatures able to seek shelter from the intense heat on the surface survived.

Roughly 66 mln years ago our planet went through one of the most large-scale extinction events in the history of multicellular life forms. Entire classes of species were wiped off the face of the Earth. Others changed beyond all recognition in order to adapt to the new conditions and survive. The reasons for this tremendous event are still not known for certain. Still, there is no doubt that the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction made dramatic changes to what our planet looked like. The majestic and horrifying dinosaurs were succeeded by creatures not less impressive – mammals.

Would dinosaurs still be alive today? Would they have evolved? Would humans have survived this long? Could we ever learn to co-exist?

  • Dinosaurs Can Come Back in the Near Future

    7:19

Could the dinosaurs ever come back? The idea that people could bring dinosaurs back someday is both exciting and scary. But it's no joke. Your childhood dream of a real-life Jurassic Park could actually come true in 30 years! And, yes, scientists were initially inspired by the famous movie. They wanted to find a mosquito stuck in amber and extract dinosaur DNA from it.

But real-world scientists came across a big problem: the oldest DNA sample they were able to get was only 1 million years old. “Only” because all the dinosaurs went extinct some 65 million years ago! So instead of looking for dinosaur DNA hanging out in the belly of an ancient mosquito, they decided to take DNA from the closest descendants of these reptilian giants.

  • Why the Dinosaurs’ Extinction is an Ongoing Puzzle | Nat Geo Explores

    7:06

Dinosaurs ruled the world for roughly 140 million years—until they suddenly disappeared. While decades of research point to an asteroid impact at Chicxulub crater as the end of the dinosaurs' reign 66 million years ago, scientists weren't always so sure what happened to these mesmerizing creatures. Theories varied wildly throughout the twentieth century as the field of paleontology grew, but it wasn't until the 1980s that one theory emerged as a major breakthrough in the extinction mystery. Today's scientists continue to piece together the puzzle with discoveries that give us a clearer picture of what happened to the dinosaurs.

The existence of dinosaurs has long intrigued the world of science as they were once the most successful species on the planet. Dinosaurs had lived their time and were wiped from the surface of the earth by asteroid bombs worth billions of Hiroshima. Who knows what they did wrong to have met with such a fatal end.

Scientists believe that not one dinosaur could have survived the apocalypse millions of years ago. And we have their fossil to tell us their story. However, recent evidence has popped up to foil that notion, and a lot of questions have ensued from it. What if the surviving dinosaurs only got better at hiding when humans came around?

Could it be that they are afraid of our capabilities because we are smarter? Well, you are about to find out as we present ten of the dinosaurs caught on camera in real life. Do well to stay tuned to the end. They might just clear your doubts.

Number 10: Velociraptor Caught in the Woods.

You can't start a list of dinosaurs and skip cool ones like t-rexes and velociraptors. Not with the significant roles they played in Jurassic Park. But, it seems that these vicious monsters managed to survive a mass extinction. And the films may not be the only place you get to see them.

Though the source of this video is unknown, it does claim to show a velociraptor escaping into the woods. It's quite blurry at first, but when you zoom in, you'll surely see the magic. It's so unbelievable because we can't rationalize how a raptor survived for so long in that sparse bush. This plus many other questions have stirred lots of reactions among critics online.

While some say that the creature came from the forest nearby where it fed on small unfortunate animals. Others are more skeptical, claiming that video could have been the work of a smart editor—one who may probably be playing on our intelligence or perhaps trying to garner more views.

Well, if that's the case, we say hats off to the mastermind behind this video. Indeed, he has won the hearts of a million believers and doubters alike. The clip looks pretty real and convincing.

    Number 9: The Ohio Pterosaur

From the enigma of the wow signal to the reincarnation of one of its inhabitants, far too many things are complicated to explain in Ohio. This footage about a dinosaur in the sky is just another on the list.

When you look at the video, you'd see a bird flying. Soaring in all its majesty to entice any ordinary onlooker. We guess that's one of the first attractions which compelled the maker of this clip to document the scenery in the first place.

Unfortunately, that bird is no ordinary one. We believe you know that already. At the very least, the bigness and the claws on the wings would have given it away. So, you should be thinking about a massive bat, shouldn't you?

However, it can't be a bat, not without that pentadactyl. Even if it did, how do you explain the crest on its head? Only the pterosaurs are known with such characteristics. But they went extinct 66 million years ago, or that's what we believe. What if they never left? Well, we leave that to you.

    Number 8: The Mokele-Mbembe

At some point, you must have wondered the possibility of a myth becoming true someday. Just take brief research into Ogopogo and the legend of the Leviathan. You'll see that they all have a basis on something in reality.

Look at the Kraken, for example. The existence of a giant squid inspired it. The Mokele-Mbembe is no different. But the good news, we have its basis caught on camera!

Initially hard to find, this picture, which looks out of focus, is one of the very few you can trace to the profile of the Mokele-mbembe. That monster with a long whippy neck endowed with a weight at least twice that of a hippopotamus. If the details are accurate, the Mokele-mbembe must surely be a dinosaur. Perhaps, a kind of sauropod in the family of dinosaurs with four legs.

Believed to inhabit the Congo basin, the Mokele is a swimmer that lives in caves and a killer that eats leaves. Yes, we know. A few blurry portrayals and videos of testament is not enough to convince the science world. If this turns out to be real, then what next?

  • What Happened Right After The Dinosaurs Disappeared?

    12:39

About 66 millions of years ago, at the end of the cretaceous period, the planet lost its dinosaurs.
But how did dinosaurs went extinct?
Of course, this happened because of a global catastrophe, but do you know what happened right after the mass extinction?
If we could go back in time for a while, we would find a world completely different than we're used to thinking today: we would find a planet that was almost destroyed by a meteor strike.A suffering planet. A desolate planet.
The same planet that learnt how to get back on track.
    Our planet Earth.

Follow me on this journey back to 66 millions of years ago, to find out what happened in the first minutes after the dinosaurs disappeared: I promise you'll be amazed.

    WHEN
AT THE END OF THE MESOZOIC ERA.
The Mesozoic (middle life) is one of three geologic eras of the Phanerozoic Eon, preceded by the Paleozoic (ancient life) and succeeded by the Cenozoic (new life). The era is subdivided into three major periods: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous, which are further subdivided into a number of epochs and stages.
    WHAT HAPPENED
A HUGE ASTEROID COME AND CRUSHED INTO THE EARTH (even if scientists still argue about this).
THE DIAMETER OF THIS CELESTIAL BODY WAS SOMETHING LIKE 11 TO 80 KM.
It might be the size of the city of Washington DC.
Such a collision couldn't pass without a trace: the world changed in an instant.
    This is how dinosaurs died.
    CHAPTER I: TOTAL DEVASTATION
Actually, around 75% of Earth's animals, including dinosaurs, suddenly died out at the same point in time.
So how was it all caused by a rock hurtling into the coast of Central America?
Let's explain it in a better way.
The asteroid hit at high velocity and effectively vaporised.
CHAPTER II: LIGHTS OFF AND MEGA TSUNAMIS
A huge blast wave and heatwave went out and it threw vast amounts of material up into the atmosphere.
CHAPTER III: CONSEQUENCES ON FOOD CHAIN
Like dominos, this trailed up the food chain, causing the ecosystem to collapse.
The reduction in plant life had a huge impact on herbivores' ability to survive, which in turn meant that carnivores would also have suffered from having less food available.
CHAPTER IV: CONSEQUENCES ON GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
The blame can't solely rest on the asteroid. Before its crash landing, Earth was experiencing a period of climate change. This was making things harder for life on our planet.
    CHAPTER V: Surviving and recovering
These events were indescribably destructive. The asteroid impact that ended the Cretaceous period shut down photosynthesis for years and caused decades of global cooling. Anything that couldn’t shelter from the cold, or find food in the darkness – which was most species – perished. Perhaps 90% of all species disappeared in just a few years.
    Could the dinosaurs have survived?
There is research to suggest that if the impact had occurred elsewhere on the planet, the fate of life on Earth could have been very different.

  • 20 Terrifying Dinosaurs You’re Glad Are Extinct

    11:50

Dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago after living on Earth for about 165 million years. They lived on all of the continents and died out. If dinosaurs didn't go extinct, mammals probably would've remained in the shadows and humans probably would've never been here. We will tell you the salvation stories of some gigantic dinosaurs who lived on this planet. Here are the top 20 terrifying dinosaurs you’re glad are extinct:
    1. Gorgosaurus:
This terrifying extinct animal lived in western North America during the Late Cretaceous Period, between about 76.6 and 75.1 million years ago. Fossil remains have been found in the Canadian province of Alberta and possibly the U.S. state of Montana.
Gorgosaurus lived in a lush floodplain environment along the edge of an inland sea. It shared its general body plan with all other tyrannosaurids. Its massive head was perched on the end of an S-shaped neck. In contrast to its large head, its forelimbs were very small.
    2. Dracorex
They are most terrifying for having a large, bony dome atop its skull, up to 25 cm thick, which safely cushioned its tiny brain. The dome's rear aspect was edged with bony knobs and short bony spikes projected upwards from the snout. The spikes were probably blunt, not sharp.
The skull was short, and possessed large, rounded eye sockets that faced forward, suggesting that the animal had good eyesight and was capable of binocular vision. They had a small muzzle which ended in a pointed beak. The teeth were tiny, with leaf-shaped crowns.
    3. Triceratops:
This terror bird lived in the late Cretaceous period, around 66 to 68 million years ago. The climate was warm and dry and there were numerous volcanoes.
Bearing a large bony frill and three horns on the skull, and its large four-legged body possessing similarities with the modern rhinoceros, Triceratops is one of the most recognizable of all dinosaurs and the best-known ceratopsid. It was also one of the largest, up to nine meters long and twelve tons in weight. Animal extinction are sometimes blessings.
    4. Giganotosaurus
Today, Giganotosaurus is believed to have been slightly larger than T. rex, though even it ranks behind Spinosaurus in size among the meat-eating dinosaurs. It should not be confused with Gigantosaurus, a lesser-known sauropod discovered in England.
It walked on two legs, had a brain the size of a banana, and had enormous jaws with 8-inch long serrated teeth in a 6-foot long skull. It is the most popular dinosaur in jurassic world evolution.
    5. Utahraptor
At top speed, these extinct animals could probably run up to 20 miles per hour for about 5-10 seconds.
Utahraptor is a genus of large dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived in North America during the Early Cretaceous period.
    6. Allosaurus
This biggest extinct animal was a large bipedal predator. Its skull was large and equipped with dozens of sharp, serrated teeth which means megadolon. It averaged 9.5 meters in length, though fragmentary remains suggest it could have reached over 12 m. Relative to the large and powerful hindlimbs, its three-fingered forelimbs were small, and the body was balanced by a long and heavily muscled tail.
    7. Mapusaurus
Mapusaurus was a large theropod and was roughly similar in size to its close relative Giganotosaurus, with the largest known individuals estimated as about 10.2 meters in length or more and weighing about 3 metric tons. Mapusaurus appears to be slightly bigger than Giganotosaurus, a close relative. One of its shin bones is longer, but also a little thinner, which is why Dr. Currie and his colleagues are careful to say they may have found the biggest meat-eating dinosaur on record.
    8. Diplodocus
Diplodocus is one of the largest dinosaurs thus far discovered. Diplodocus carnegii, a Diplodocus species, is one of the longest dinosaurs conserved from a complete skeleton, but other individuals likely grew to even larger sizes. Its size and shape is so unusual that paleontologists aren’t even sure how sauropods were able to breathe. This is the most innocent dinosaur in jurassic world.
    9. Brachiosaurus
Brachiosaurus is another sauropod, like the Diplodocus. In 1903, paleontologist Elmer S. Riggs named the dinosaur Brachiosaurus altithorax with the name Brachiosaurus being Greek for “arm lizard”, and altithorax being Greek for “deep chest”. The Brachiosaurus also had a bird-like breathing system, with air sacs pumping air.
    10. Coelophysis bauri
Don’t let the size fool you. Even though Coeplophysis was only around 44 pounds, fossil evidence shows they hunted in packs. They were also quite agile and boasted blade-like cutting teeth. Coelophysis was a bipedal, carnivorous, theropod dinosaur that was a fast and agile runner.

  • How a Meteor Killed the Dinosaurs and How we Know it Happened

    10:51

In the Cretaceous rock layer 66 million years ago fossils of non avian dinosaurs are abundant but then after it, in the blink of a geological eye they had all but vanished and in the following period the Palaeogene, mammals were much larger and more diverse. It is common knowledge now that the cause of this dinosaur disappearance was a giant meteor the size of a mountain, but how was this actually found out. And how did it change the earth in such a long and far reaching way.

  • What If Dinosaurs Were Still Alive Today?

    11:39

About 66 million years ago an asteroid the size of Mount Everest traveling at 45,000 miles per hour hit what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. We can’t change the past, but still: what if that asteroid had missed? What would the Earth look like today if dinosaurs were still alive?
Some scientists say that the dinosaurs’ numbers had already been steadily declining for thousands of years before the asteroid hit, so they may have died out on their own without a mass extinction event. Still, the environment might not have suited early mammal populations, and they might not have been able to adapt quickly enough.

Music: End of Time . Ugonna Onyekwe
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (by Mozart) . Mozart

    SUMMARY
-Dinosaurs existed in the late Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods during the Mesozoic era, which encompassed 180 million years. Earth at that time had a very warm climate with mild seasonal changes and no polar ice. The supercontinent Pangea had only just started to break down into smaller land masses that would millions of years later become the seven continents we know today.
-This infamous asteroid, basically an enormous space rock, became a fireball when confronted with friction and gravity in the Earth’s atmosphere, and it collided with a force of 100 million megatons. Smaller species living in the western hemisphere were able to survive the heat it all caused underground. But the big guys, like the triceratops and t-rex, were baked alive.
-The asteroid could’ve continued on its path without getting sucked in by the Earth’s gravitational pull, missing the planet completely, and letting the dinosaurs live out the rest of their natural lives in peace.
-In the purely hypothetical situation where dinosaurs never went extinct, their brains would’ve continued to adapt and evolve along with their bodies. Some scientists say that the dinosaurs’ numbers had already been steadily declining for thousands of years before the asteroid hit, so they may have died out on their own without a mass extinction event.

  • What happened the day After Dinosaurs Died? The Giant Reptiles Once Dominated This Planet

    10:06

In a time known as Mesozoic Era, where the all continentals were part of single mass. That world was dominated by living giant reptiles. We called them Dinosaurs. But at the end of the cretaceous period, a global catastrophe caused a sudden mass extinction of three-quarters of the plant and dinosaur species on Earth. Scientist called this the Cretaceous Paleogene extinction event. Everyone knows how dinosaurs died.

But what happened, the day after the mass extinction?

Today we will be looking into that.
