What if Antarctica MELTED?

  • What if Antarctica MELTED?

A remake an old video of mine, hope this answered some burning curiosities! And no, there are not aliens or Nazi bunkers under the ice... that I know of.

I forgot to mention that under the Antarctic treaty, mining is TECHNICALLY prohibited on Antarctic, but that expires in around 30 years, and it's uncertain whether or not it will be renewed. Plus this is all theoretical anyway and would take place over many hundreds of years, if not thousands.

  • What If Antarctica’s Dormant Volcanoes Woke Up?

Deep beneath the thick layer of million-year-old ice, something is lurking quietly, waiting to rip through the rigid ice sheets. This enormous icy wasteland is sitting on top of a volcanic ridge. And in our hypothetical world, these volcanoes are about to wake up. Could their scorching lava wipe out the surface of Earth? Or would the thick Antarctic ice stop the lava before it makes our planet uninhabitable?

  • Why scientists are so worried about this glacier

It's at the heart of Antarctica and on the verge of collapse.

    Become a Video Lab member!

Man-made climate change is warming the planet's atmosphere and oceans, and the effects are being felt the most at the poles. In Antarctica, home to the largest chunk of ice on earth, ice shelves and glaciers are beginning to collapse, and one in particular could spell disaster. The Thwaites Glacier, in West Antarctica, has retreated more than 14 kilometers in the last two decades as warm ocean water undermines it. The glacier is situated on a downward slope that falls deep into the center of Antarctica. It's why scientists are racing to find out how close it is to total collapse - and what that would mean for future sea levels.

  • Antarctica Hides 100+ Volcanoes, What If They All Erupt?

What if Antarctica’s volcanoes wake up? In fact, Antarctica is technically the largest desert in the world. It’s also covered with whole lotta volcanoes just chilling around. Scientists discovered that there are 138 volcanoes in Antarctica, 91 of which are hidden beneath the icy surface and 47 on top. And there might even be more. But most of these volcanoes are dormant. And for a volcano to be dormant, it has to be fast asleep for the last 50,000 years!

The last volcano eruption was Mount Erebus in the Western part of the continent. It’s the most active volcano in the South side of the world and is roughly 12,500 ft (3,800 m) above sea level. That’s as high as stacking the Burj Khalifa on top of itself 5 times. There’s a whole bunch of these volcanoes stretched across the entire continent. Scientists have warned that if any of these interior ice-contained volcanoes were to erupt, they’d melt the Western Antarctic part of the land and increase the spill of ice into the ocean. It would raise the sea level and flood many endangered lands that are already at risk...

  • Antarctica : What happens if the Doomsday Glacier collapses?

Antarctica is home to some of the world's largest ice sheets and glaciers. They existed in a stable equilibrium of ebb and flow for millions of years until global warming started to melt them faster than the snow falls could replenish their ice. Now a new US / UK research collaboration has discovered that the rate of melt is even worse than scientists feared. What's driving this latest acceleration, and can we slow it down?

  • Antarctica is losing ice at an accelerating rate. How much will sea levels rise?

The frozen continent of Antarctica contains the vast majority of all freshwater on Earth. Now that ice is melting at an accelerating rate, in part because of climate change. What does this transformation mean for coastal communities across the globe? William Brangham reports from Antarctica on the troubling trend of ice loss and how glaciers can serve as a climate record from the past.

Glaciologists have described Thwaites Glacier as the most important glacier in the world, the riskiest glacier, even the doomsday glacier.

A team of 40 or so scientists are part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, a five-year, $50m (£38m) joint UK-US effort to understand why it is changing so rapidly.

The project represents the biggest and most complex scientific field programme in Antarctic history.

The BBC's chief environment correspondent Justin Rowlatt went to meet the scientists behind the project.

Antarctica. The Underside of our Fair Planet. Did you know that down there, right at the southern tip point - is over 26.5 million cubic kilometres of ice, jammed up and packed together in an absolutely colossal ice sheet that comprises the frozen continent. Now - in a completely hypothetical apocalyptic scenario - imagine that all of that ice, was suddenly melted by - oh, I don’t know - a rapid change in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere - and without warning - melted.

  • What Would Happen If All The Ice in Antarctica Melted?

Climate change is probably one of the most serious existential challenges facing contemporary human civilization. Following centuries of industrialization and stripping the planet of its natural resources, we have brought on a crisis of global proportions. The implications of climate change are too great to ignore, with disastrous consequences for the planet, its fauna, flora, lands and oceans. The ice in Antarctica is already melting at an unprecedented pace, devastating not only for the continents’ species but also resulting in rapidly rising sea levels. Climate change results in a rise in global temperatures, which in turn melts the Antarctic ice reserves. So if all of the ice in Antarctica were to melt, what exactly would happen?

  • What if All The Antarctica Ice Melts? *Scary*

40 years of NASA research shows that as a result of global warming, Antarctica ice levels are decreasing. It's at the lowest mark in 40 years, at some places over 100 meters of ice is lost.

Antarctica is located at the south pole. It is the coldest place on Earth. It contains 70% of earth's ice and about 90% of the freshwater ice.

Many of the effects of climate change are irreversible. Sea levels have been rising at a greater rate year after year, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates they could rise by another meter or more by the end of this century.

As National Geographic showed us in 2013, sea levels would rise by 216 feet if all the land ice on the planet were to melt. This would dramatically reshape the continents and drown many of the world's major cities.

If the world keeps burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon emissions indefinitely, climate change will eventually melt all the ice at the poles and on mountains, according to National Geographic.

This would raise global sea levels by approximately 216 feet, engulfing oceanside cities like Miami, Buenos Aires, and Cairo.
Business Insider made an animated map that shows what the world would look like if this doomsday future came true.

  • What If We Could Refreeze the Arctic?

The Arctic might soon become completely ice-free. And when all of the ice is gone, the world won't be the same. And while politics seems to keep failing to reach a consensus on how to act, the only way to save the ice may be to intervene directly. We look at radical geoengineering proposals that aim to do just that. We could bring the ice back to the Arctic with the help of huge wind-powered water pumps, we could help the young Arctic ice reflect more sunlight by covering it with small, shiny silica microspheres or try cutting off the Sun's rays by creating more clouds. But would the cost be worth it?

The planet would be sent into chaos if all the ice melted overnight but what would that look like? There would be mass flooding from sea level rise, severe weather changes, deadly chemical release, and mass greenhouse gasses that will leak into the atmosphere. Scientists say we need to stop this planet from rising in temperature, by just 1-degree Celcius, or this could happen sooner than we think.

Many people have wondered what would happen if all the glacial ice on the planet melted. Some believe that it would be a water world with no land in sight, while others think that could never happen. But the Earth is changing in more ways than you might think on its own. Many might wonder how much of the Earth’s current global warming trend is affected by humans. Regardless of who is to blame, whether the planet is just going through a natural phase in its evolution, or if we are responsible, the evidence shows that the planet is getting warmer and warmer every year. But just how much of the planet could end up covered in water if all the glacial ice melted?

We hope you enjoyed the video. Do you have an idea on how we could stop global warming? Let us know in the comments. • What if Antarctica Melts?

If you’re talking about Antarctica, then you’re probably discussing penguins or climate change. While penguins are a very important topic of discussion, as they should be, climate change is a bit more pressing - and controversial - of a subject. It’s difficult to come to a consensus on many things, but the only way to do so is to examine both sides of the argument. Even if you ultimately disagree with this video, I (and likely many others) appreciate your consideration and hope that you walk away with at least some useful information on the topic of climate change and what would happen if Antarctica lost its ice.

  • What if ALL the Ice in Antarctica Melted? What Would Happen?

The ramifications of Antarctica melting would be pretty drastic. Beyond the flooding that would inevitably take place, we would witness many changes; the salt concentration of all the world's oceans, climate patterns, Ocean current shifts, and much MUCH more... Bottom line, Antarctica could in theory be referred to as the 'keystone' of our Ocean ecosystem. It's SO SO important!

Per the Antarctic treaty, it's neutral territory. Whether or not we plan to develop, cultivate, and even mine the continent remains to be seen. We have learned recently over the past few years that the effects of climate change are having a considerable impact on Antarctica and the Antarctic region. Whatever your political views, we can all at least agree on the fact that sea levels are undoubtedly rising.

National Geographic and other organizations have displayed renderings that demonstrate a rise of sea levels about 216 feet globally. As shown in the video, this would have a DRAMATIC effect on millions upon millions of people worldwide. While this wouldn't be an overnight change, it's progressive.

What will happen if Antarctica melts? Antarctica is the world's highest, driest, windiest and coldest continent. Its record low temperature is -94°C. But it doesn't actually snow much – the Antarctic is so dry it's classed as a polar desert. And it's in darkness most part of the year. It is Earth's fifth largest continent. In this video we have discussed about what will happen if Antarctica melts. So watch this video and make sure you subscribe to our Channel. • What If All The Ice In The World Melted?

What would EARTH look like if all the ice on earth just melted? SUBSCRIBE!

Islands would be hit the hardest. Some places would be left with only their mountains, sticking out of the ocean like fat, stony fingers. But many would go the way of New Moore and be no more. Bad joke, I know, but it makes sense that places surrounded by ocean would disappear first when the water rises. In fact, scientists estimate that if things continue the way they are, by the year 2050, there could be more than a hundred million people displaced by climate change. By 2100 that number could skyrocket to a mind blowing two billion individuals world wide with nowhere to go, a good many of them from islands that no longer exist. Places like The Marshall Islands, Kiribati, the Maldives, and Tuvalu will end up completely submerged. Whole civilizations, gone. Just like that. The population of Marshall Islands alone is over fifty thousand and Kiribati’s head count is pushing a hundred and ten thousand. Trying to find room for so many global warming refugee when the continents themselves will have shrunk would likely push our planet into a world-wide crisis.

In North America, much of the west coast, including most of Los Angeles and San Diego would vanish underwater. Further up, we’d lose all of Vancouver, Seattle and Portland. San Francisco would end up an island and the bay would swell so large it would swallow Sacramento whole. As if that’s not bad enough, on the east coast the Atlantic would rise far enough to cover places like Houston, New Orleans, and the entire states of Florida and Delaware. There are over twenty million people in Florida, 2.3 million in Houston, just over nine-hundred thousand in Delaware, and more than three-hundred thousand stuffed into New Orleans. That’s over twenty-three million fighting to find a place to stay. In the North Eastern US we’d lose the entirety of New York and Boston with a combined displacement of a little more than nine million people. In the end, the mainland of the USA ends up with something like thirty-two million homeless and a statue of Liberty with only her arm and head above water...

Global warming is a theme that is exceedingly disputed. Regardless if you believe it or not, the earth's temperature has been on the raise. Also, with a great deal of our planet's water stored within the glaciers and polar ice caps. It brings about the question. What would happen to earth if all the ice melted?

  • The Doomsday Glacier is Melting Faster Than Predicted!

Thwaites Glacier is located in Antarctica, it is also known as the Doomsday Glacier. Scientists saw a massive hole in this glacier which lost more than 14 billion tons of ice. So they used an underwater robot, Icefin and recorded temperature 700 meters below the ice sheet.

Shockingly they have found that it's temperature is 2°C above freezing point. And if this glacier melts completely it will destabilize the entire Antarctic region draining a mass of water equal to the size of UK.

It is estimated that glaciers presently occupy about 10% of the world's landmass. Now, if all the glaciers were to suddenly melt:

Firstly, sea levels around the world would rise by more than 50 meters, so no more beach vacations. Secondly, more land will be covered by water. Hence, home and office prices will skyrocket. Thirdly, it would be cheaper as well as easier to drill oil near the poles. Oil companies would definitely rejoice. Fourthly, new shipping routes will open up. Stocks of cruise companies will definitely go up. Fifthly, old preserved fossils or lost civilizations might be uncovered. Museums might be a happy lot in this case. Lastly, as shown in movies, certain deadly hidden viruses might affect the health of worldwide population.

  • What Would Happen If ALL THE ICE In The World MELTED?

We all know that ice caps and ice sheets on earth are melting as temperatures rise due to climate change. As ice melts, methane gases are released, less sunlight is reflected, and more heat is trapped in our atmosphere - causing a greenhouse effect. We might think that this is a problem for future generations to solve, but what if all the ice in the world melted overnight?? How much would sea levels rise, and would New York City be completely flooded? How many people will have to migrate? What can we do save our planet and stop global warming?
