  • Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House impeachment managers respond to Trumps acquittal

    21:51

The House impeachment managers respond to questions following the acquittal of former President Donald Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The vote was 57-43 that Trump was guilty, but fell 10 votes short of the two-thirds majority necessary to convict. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Congress will establish an independent, Sept. 11-style commission to look into the deadly insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol.

Pelosi said the commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex … and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.”

  • President Donald Trump wont commit to peaceful transfer of power if he loses the election

    1:11

President Donald Trump will not commit to peaceful transfer of power after the election. Get rid of the ballots, he says, and there won't be a transfer of power, there'll be a continuation. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

President Donald Trump refused Wednesday to commit to a peaceful transition of power if he loses the 2020 election to Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

“Well, we’ll have to see what happens. You know that. I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots. And the ballots are a disaster,” Trump said at a news conference at the White House. It appeared Trump was referring to mail-in ballots, which he has repeatedly condemned, without evidence, as susceptible to massive fraud.

The president had been asked by a reporter if he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power, “win, lose or draw.”

When the reporter noted that “people are rioting,” Trump replied: “Get rid of the ballots, and you’ll have a very – you’ll have a very peaceful – there won’t be a transfer, frankly, there’ll be a continuation.”

“The ballots are out of control,” Trump said, adding, “The Democrats know it better than anybody else.”

The Biden campaign issued the following statement in response to Trump declining to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he were to lose the election: “The American people will decide this election. And the United States government is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.”

The Trump campaign pushed back on criticism of the president’s answer. “The premise of the question the President was asked assumed that he would lose, which he naturally disagrees with, meaning there will not be a change in administration,” said spokesman Tim Murtaugh.

Minutes after he discussed the potential outcome of the election, the president abruptly left the briefing room, telling the press, “I have to leave to take an emergency phone call.”

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for details on Trump’s departure.

Trump in his brief time at the rostrum also discussed his upcoming announcement of a nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“I think it will be a great nominee, a brilliant nominee,” Trump said, noting that he had already committed to selecting a female judge for the Supreme Court.

Ginsburg, the Court’s senior liberal associate justice, died Friday evening at age 87 due to complications from pancreatic cancer.

Trump and most Senate Republicans, especially Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, have signaled eagerness to have Ginsburg’s seat filled before the Nov. 3 election.

Doing so would likely cement a conservative majority on the nine-member bench, which could alter the trajectory of U.S. law for decades to come.

It could also play a central role in the near term. With the coronavirus pandemic spurring massive changes to vote-by-mail rules in numerous states, the 2020 election has already become a battlefield of partisan litigation

  • He Predicted a Trump Win in 2016. Whats His Forecast For 2020? | NYT Opinion

    7:14

Right now, polls say Joe Biden has a healthy lead over President Trump. But we’ve been here before (cue 2016), and the polls were, frankly, wrong. One man, however, was not. The historian Allan Lichtman was the lonely forecaster who predicted Mr. Trump’s victory in 2016 — and also prophesied the president would be impeached. That’s two for two. But Professor Lichtman’s record goes much deeper. In 1980, he developed a presidential prediction model that retrospectively accounted for 120 years of U.S. election history. Over the past four decades, his system has accurately called presidential victors, from Ronald Reagan in ’84 to, well, Mr. Trump in 2016.

In the video Op-Ed above, Professor Lichtman walks us through his system, which identifies 13 “keys” to winning the White House. Each key is a binary statement: true or false. And if six or more keys are false, the party in the White House is on its way out.

So what do the keys predict for 2020? To learn that, you’ll have to watch the video.

  • Pelosi: Democrats Ready for Battle If Trump Contests Election Results

    56

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she's absolutely certain that Democrats will solidly hold onto their House majority.

On an Election Day conference call with reporters, the California Democrat said this election is about nothing less than taking back the soul of America, whether our nation will follow the voices of fear or whether we will choose hope.

Pelosi and Rep. Cheri Bustos say the party is reaching deep into Trump country to win seats. Bustos is chair of the campaign arm for House Democrats, who are well positioned to try to add longtime GOP seats in Long Island, Arkansas, Indiana and rural Virginia.

Bustos says Democrats are going to see some wins in those deep red districts.

Pelosi says she's confident Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will win the White House from President Donald Trump.

Biden has spent the day visiting Pennsylvania. Trump visited RNC headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

  • Donald Trump concedes election but doesnt take responsibility for Capitol unrest

    3:16

President Donald Trump acknowledged that Joe Biden will be president on Thursday, but he did not take responsibility for the mob of his supporters who breached the Capitol. CNBC's Eamon Javers reports. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

President Donald Trump on Thursday acknowledged for the first time that President-elect Joe Biden’s administration will take charge in less than two weeks.

Without mentioning Biden by name, Trump said in a nearly three-minute video that “a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th.”

Trump, who had repeatedly vowed never to concede to Biden, backed dozens of failed lawsuits and flooded his Twitter account with baseless claims of voter fraud.

His refusal to accept the election results culminated in a deadly riot on Wednesday, when swarms of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and derailed congressional proceedings to tally electors’ votes and confirm Biden’s win in the Nov. 3 election.

“Now tempers must be cooled, and calm restored. We must get on with the business of America,” Trump said in his first address to the nation following the riot that left five people dead, including a Capitol police officer.

“My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power,” the president added.

Biden’s victory was projected by all major news outlets in mid-November and confirmed by Electoral College votes in mid-December. The Republican president has falsely insisted he won in a “landslide,” asserting his reelection was stolen through massive electoral fraud.

The president, who was blocked from Twitter for 12 hours on Wednesday, briefly spoke about the pandemonium at the U.S. Capitol.

“To those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. And to those who broke the law, you will pay,” Trump said in the video. In a video on Wednesday, as the mob swarmed the building, Trump said “we love you, you’re very special.”

The rioters descended on Capitol directly after Trump told them at a rally outside the White House to march on the home of Congress to protest the election results.

“We want to go back and we want to get this right. Because we are going to have somebody in there that should not be in there and our country will be destroyed and we’re not going to stand for that,” Trump told his followers at the rally.

As protesters besieged the Capitol, Trump, who had returned to the White House after his speech told supporters in a tweeted video “you have to go home now.”

He did not condemn the violence and continued to falsely claim he won the election. Trump also sympathized with and flattered the rioters, shirking widespread calls to denounce the violence. Twitter later removed that tweet and locked the president’s account.

In addition to the five deaths, scores were injured, including more than 50 police officers, authorities said. The White House on Thursday expressed sympathy over the deaths and injuries.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds her weekly news conference after President Donald Trump said Thursday that stimulus negotiators are “starting to have some very productive talks.” Trump's comments came days after his stunning decision to halt deliberations with top Democrats. The office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in negotiations with the White House, did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who leads negotiations for the White House, resumed phone discussions about airline aid Wednesday.

  • President Donald Trump: I think Speaker Nancy Pelosis incompetent

    2:37

President Trump talks coronavirus concerns in the U.S. and responds to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's comment that he doesn't know what he's talking about. He

Around noon Wednesday, the CDC had confirmed 60 coronavirus cases in the U.S., a majority of which came from passengers repatriated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined off the coast of Japan.

The agency also confirmed the first possible “community spread” of the coronavirus in the U.S., found in a patient in California. The CDC doesn’t know exactly how the patient contracted the virus.

From its epicenter in Wuhan in China’s Hubei province, the virus has spread to nearly every corner of the globe, killing more than 2,700 people and infecting tens of thousands more.

Hours before the presser was scheduled to begin, Politico reported that the White House was considering appointing a coronavirus czar. The White House denied the report, and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said that he didn’t anticipate a czar being appointed.

“Mike’s not a czar,” Trump said when asked about his decision to put Pence in charge of the response to the coronavirus. “This isn’t a czar ... I have very talented people. I want to use them on this.”

Azar told reporters in the briefing room that he is still the chairman of the coronavirus task force. He said he is “delighted” to have Pence “helping” him on the plan.

Trump has rarely appeared in the James S. Brady Briefing Room, where White House press secretaries have traditionally fielded questions from the press. The last official press briefing, however, was nearly a year ago during the tenure of former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The current press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, has never held an official press briefing.

The Trump administration has taken numerous steps in response to the virus, such as declaring a public health emergency and imposing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines. And White House officials, along with Trump himself, have worked to ease fears of a pandemic that have rattled governments and investors around the world.

Azar testified before Congress on Wednesday that the administration’s response to the coronavirus “has been the smoothest interagency process I’ve experienced in my 20 years of dealing with public health emergencies.”

A day earlier, National Economic Director Larry Kudlow told CNBC that “We have contained this. I won’t say [it’s] airtight, but it’s pretty close to airtight.”

Kudlow’s comments contrasted with a CDC official who said that “Current global circumstances suggest it’s likely this virus will cause a pandemic.”

The administration’s comments have failed to calm markets in recent trading sessions, however. Stocks plunged Monday and Tuesday in the largest two-day sell-off in years. After initially clawing back some ground on Wednesday, the Dow Jones industrial average once again fell into the red to end the trading session.

  • OVAL OFFICE FIGHT: President Trump, Chuck Schumer And Nancy Pelosi ARGUE Over Border Wall Funding

    14:34

President Trump clashed Tuesday with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi with the cameras rolling in the Oval Office, as the president insisted he's willing to let the government shut down if Congress doesn't approve funding for his U.S.-Mexico border wall.

If we don't have border security, we'll shut down the government, Trump said.

The highly anticipated sit-down quickly escalated, in public, as Trump allowed the press to attend the start of it. Trump began by repeatedly telling Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, that what she's proposing would not pass the Senate.

Schumer then raised his voice as he claimed the Senate could pass measures to keep the government running regardless.

If it's not good [on] border security, I won't take it, Trump shot back.

Pelosi and Schumer repeatedly urged the president to take the meeting private, but not before he declared he's proud to shut down the government for border security and will take the mantle.

Pelosi noted, this has spiraled downwards.

The explosive meeting with Schumer, the Senate minority leader, and Pelosi came hours after Trump threatened Tuesday to have the military “build the remaining sections” of the wall if Congress doesn’t deliver the funding. Vice President Mike Pence was also in attendance.

As Trump began discussing the details of the negotiations, Pelosi said, I don’t think you should have a debate in front of the press. At another point, Schumer said: Let's debate in private.”

Trump and Schumer also exchanged zingers over recent midterm elections.

“Elections have consequences, Mr. President,” Schumer said.

“And that’s why the country is doing so well,” the president shot back.

Schumer jabbed Trump over boasting that Republicans kept control of the Senate.

“When a president brags that he’s won Indiana and North Dakota, he’s in real trouble,” Schumer said.

“We did!” Trump replied. “We did win.”

Congress last week temporarily averted a partial shutdown amid the funeral services for the late President George H.W. Bush, pushing the new deadline to Dec. 21. But border wall funding remains the sticking point as Trump and congressional leaders try to hammer out a government spending package. Trump wants $5 billion for the project, while Democrats are offering $1.3 billion for border security.

Earlier, Pelosi and Schumer put out a joint statement Monday arguing Trump and his party will own a government shutdown if they can’t strike a deal.

Republicans still control the House, the Senate and the White House, and they have the power to keep government open, they said. Our country cannot afford a Trump Shutdown, the Democrats said, adding that Trump knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement.

Trump said Friday that Congress should provide all the money he wants for the wall and called illegal immigration a threat to the well-being of every American community.
